    5 yrs later everyone and its mom is riding on 30mm+ rims, I just received a set of 25mm xc wheels and I run Maxxis wt's or 2.4 vredesteins to round up the tread, I lean quite a lot in the corners and with the muddy autumn season it's a very fun combination...

    I'm pretty sure that it would be really, really fun to party with this guy. Besides that, the video was really helpful. That said, it would be really interesting to mount the same tire onto different width rims, to see how different rim width effects the profile of the tire. It would be cool to know at what point a rim gets too wide for a specific tire (a standard, like a Maxxis Ardent, for example). Anyway, cool video. And the opening animation is awesome!

    Interesting topic,as I have a Dartmoor 30mm irw rim with a maxxis 2.7 for dh riding,on the same bike I use a nukeproof generator tr narrow rim with a 2.3 for trails ,both front wheels have a huge effect on the bikes handling I have tried narrow tyres on wide rims and wide tyres on narrow rims.When you use wide tyres on narrow rims you get punctures from the inner part of the tube where the rubber is compressing into the narrow channel, however using a 2.3 continental on a narrow rim, it pulls the tyre bead in further with the adverse effect of pulling the side knobs round more so you get more grip cornering and the centre knobs sit slightly higher creating less drag on the straight.I find this ideal for fire trails and single track.I don't think the narrow rim can hold anything wider than a continental 2.3 very well.I don't know if this input is useful as I run 50 and 60 psi to try and reduce drag. I like the bike feeling twitchy on trails but grounded on downhill

    I just got new wheels made in Finland (only way to make it fit my narrow bike frame) going from 21mm to 30mm on my fully damped electric bike with 2.2" tires, the difference was huge... Even with the tires rock hard full with air I could immediately feel much less vibrations on rocky roads that is a killer for my hands. After letting air out for 40 seconds riding was more like on a fat bike and the grip was also a lot better then with the old rims. Narrow rims on a mountain bike is just stupid for casual riding at least where comfort and grip is key.

    Also, I found that when rim is wider they make its walls thinner to make a weight acceptable. You cant use it on some gnarly stuff because of it. If I like to shred on some rocks I can destroy it easely than some 25-29 FR/DH rims that can weight the same but with stronger thicker walls.

    I'm building new wheel sets. I weigh between 94kg and 100kg. I ride trails and aggressive XC hard cornering, decent/short downhill sections but lots of climbs too,a and all mountain style on my Giant Anthem alluminium 27.5.
    I am willing to get me 2 sets of wheels from DT-SWIss but I'm confused because I don't know what the difference 25mm and 30mm inner rim width looks like.
    The widest tire in my collection is a 2.35 ardent race, the rest are 2.3 and 2.2 and that's about as wide and as thin my tires get. Now, in order not to get that bell/hourglass shape or burp tires at low pressure, what inner width should I consider for the anthem both front and rear?

    It seems very difficult to understand what rim width and what tire width will equal actual tire width in the end. With each rim and tire manufacturer having so many different standards. Is the only way to know what the end tire width will be is to actually mount the tire and the rim and then measure? For instance, I am curious about running a Light-Bicycle 30mm internal width rim with a 48mm Switchback Hill tire. However, my frame will accommodate 52mm maximum clearance. Will this rim and tire combination equal out to over 52mm? Is there any way I could figure this out before actually buying the rims and tires? Thanks

    • @antiherobc
      @antiherobc  6 років тому

      ah dude, I wish there was an easy answer but tire manufacturers make it hard for all of us. Trial & error is unfortunately the way forward. Seems many tire manufacturers have a different idea on their tire widths. I have found that Maxxis are generally slightly narrower in profile but a little taller than others like Schwalbe.

    My fully damped electric mountain mike has very narrow rims. If you do not have very high air pressure that is very uncomfortable when off-road they almost goes of the rim when cornering on tarmac or hard gravel and you loose grip even at low speed cornering... Now it has also started to break the spokes, 4 in a row on a slow 3km ride on tarmac. I see no other choice then buying new wider rims. I really wanted a fatbike but I could not find any fully damped electric ones. I have arthritis and when it is bumpy I ride slow as riding fast is very painful for my hands, it also the reason that I wanted a fully damped fatbike... But new wider rims with wider tires I will be able to make it like a light version of a fatbike as there is 1cm room on both sides front and back for wider tires.

    • @antiherobc
      @antiherobc  4 роки тому +1

      Tire pressure is quite important and if you run fatter tires it will add some extra cushion when you're riding. You could also try some carbon bars if your hands are feeling too much trail vibration, they would dampen the chatter and help with the vibrations to your hands.

      @@antiherobc I just got new wheels made in Finland (only way to make it fit my narrow bike frame) going from 21mm to 30mm on my fully damped electric bike with 2.2" tires. The difference was huge and it dampens the vibrations that gave me pain in my wrist very effectively. I am surprised that just going from narrow to wide rims made such a huge difference with the same tires. Now I will have to make the suspension stiffer as now I can ride a LOT faster over the bumps and it did bottom out a few times at the rear ;) Now riding is fun again.

    I currently use Highroller 2 2.3 & Shorty 2.3, but narrower Suomi 2.2 studded tyre will feel like horrible no matter of the width, with a lot of vibrations, but studded are necessary for the winter, but I will research wider tyres, but max I can run is 2.3 cus of the frame.

      @@antiherobc I haven't decided if I should get 25mm or 30mm rim, I think a wider rim will help when installing the tyre with Cush Core on the rim, also probably help with installing DH tyres too. I still use the same 23mm rims, I tried to install and remove a Michelin DH22 2.4, I haven't ridden that tyre, but I just tested the installation and removal, the tyre require med keep the tyre tight and pop the bead on initially by hand carefully and work it on both sides then press the bead into centre of rim, but that was harder than regular maxis tyres, eventually I managed to seat it, but removal required two tyre levers.
      that tyre was probably meant for a 25mm or 30mm rim, not a 23MM, i know 2.30 tyres feel good on 23mm rim, so 25mm rim will be good for 2.4 I guess.

    • @antiherobc
      @antiherobc  4 роки тому +1

      The bike is only designed for the wheel size it is supposed to have.
      If it's a 29 inch bike and you want to go 27.5 the wheels will fit but your bbq will be very low and the geometry will change on the bike. Rather keep the wheel size it was designed to use

      I've run a 2.25 wide tire on a 17mm rim. It has the dreaded light bulb look.
      Tire does work but washes out on turns. My bike shop recommended no wider than 2.04 in width tires on these rims or go wider rims to stay with the 2.25 tires and get better cornering.
      So far no lost beads on the narrow rims. Though I'm running tubes.
      Cheers

      I have not had 36 hole rims before but I am riding with stans flow mk3 rims and they are decent.

      I would not reccomend it, I have 2.2 on what looks like 19 - 17mm (hard to tell without taking of the tire) and it has horrible side flex making you loose grip when cornering unless you run very hard tires that is horribly uncomfortable in terrain and my bike is fully damped (the vibrations is a killer with that much air in the tires that is needed to keep it from flexing to much).

      Wide tires on narrow rims = side flex and loosing grip to the point of being dangerous is my experience with 2.2 on what looks like 17-19mm rims (but it helps when tire is inflated rock hard but then it is horrible to ride offroad even on my fully damped bike because of the vibrations)... I am uppgrading myself to 35mm rims and wider tires on me e-mtb for better cornering on tarmac without the dangerous and horrible flex and better comfort when riding offroad.

      I haven't tried blowing plus tires up on 25mm but I would say that you should look at 30mm internal width for 2.8' and possibly 35mm for for 3'. You might not get the ideal tire profile from blowing them up on 25mm rims.

    up to a point rim width has next to no effect on tyre hight or width. There is a German site that lists different tyres on different rims with pressures. Going wide makes makes most tyres less efficient because they weren't designed for 30mm rims. Like boost and 29ers its mostly hype. I run a 24.5mm rim and have no intention of going wider. The conditions I ride in don't warrant a 2.6 inch wide tyre plus bigger the tyre the more rotational mass you have to humpf about. .

    • @antiherobc
      @antiherobc  6 років тому +1

      MTB Scotland Yeah, my rims are too wide and it's a pain to find suitable tires other than maxxis wt, where I stay. I hate being restricted to only buying those. My 32mm wheels are better than the super wides, tires blow up better. I was hoping to get the point across that there is a limit to rim width from my experience is of riding with super wide rims for the past few years.
      Although I liked riding plus tires I have had terrible luck with them and find their casings are very weak at present. I tear them up badly every time I ride them.

      Ride Rate Review bro in law has 30mm Easton arcs and they square the profile off too much. I've got a DHR2 WT on the rear and it is slightly more rounded on my rim than the arc. Agree with the rolling though but that's only if you use silly low pressures which I don't. Continental and introducing wider tyres more suited to the wide rims but still too wide for the conditions i tend to ride in.
      Liked the vid btw
