Great information on the topic. I unknowingly got my 240 hub built up to a 25mm IW rim.. the EX471... pretty upset about the 25mm IW because I've always ran 30mm and they've worked well. Right now I have a Conti Kryp 2.4 to the 2.4... What are your thoughts on a minion 2.4 on the 25mm IW... 2.3 minion?
It will round those tires and reduce the traction patch. While this may be fine in the rear it will make the front really feel the dead spot of a minion. If you drop to the 2.3 it will help. 30mm would be far more ideal. Even 28mm would be a big change using the tire widths you like. Sorry to hear you got a build that came with a narower rim width.
I would go 28 in the front and 25 in the rear. This is for traction versus rolling and spinning up. Many of my bikes have this variation for performance reasons.

What about gravel 27.5 wheels? I have 50mm clearence front with a 29” wheel and 43mm on the rear with a 29” wheel. Probably 50mm front and 45mm with the 27.5 wheels. Any thoughts about the sweet spot for a internal rim with, tire combo? Thanks
Great vid, explaining it. I had 2.40 on 23mm, felt much better after replacing Maxxis 2.30 hightoller2 c3 maxxterra with Michelin wild enduro, better side knobs, more stable, less squirmy, with 62 deg head angle maxxis just don't feel great, they feel OK, but Michelin was another level, it actually made trackstands much easier, but once I got the 30mm rims, fakies and turns got smoother, less round tyre, was bit too round on 23mm, not horrible, but not greatest. I won't go back to 23mm rim, nor Maxxis tyres.
Greetings, I recently bought a Tallboy and wanted to put some carbon rims on it, I'm between 27mm or 30mm. the most I do are Trails and XC. What do you recommend for that type of bike? Thanks,
Ok I bought a cheap mb, the company actually put 19 mm Id rims with 2.1 tires... Now I'm looking for 30 mm...when looking at rims there are a ton of 21-22 mm rims for mountain bikes on the market!!!
Some of this is to keep the weight down. Ultimately, you decide what you want based on performance characteristics and what compromises you will live with.
I ride my 2021 s works epic on about everything. 2021 has 29mm internal width. The older model had 25mm internal. On trail the 29 is way better but on flat hard ground you get a lot more bobbing from the extra float from the volume. Probably doesn't slow you down that much.
Oh man, both great hubs. Onux is heavier, but dead silent and smooth with instant engagement. I9 is a little lighter, made in the US, and awesome product. If weight is part of the plan then I9, otherwise I might go Onyx here.
Specialized now has 30mm inner rim width wheels meant for 2.1” gravel tires on a gravel bike (Roval Terra CLX Evo 700/650b). What’s your take on this, given that you recommend 27mm inner rim widths for 2.2-2.4” XC bikes? What if weight is not a concern - what is the Goldilocks ratio for rim width to tire width? Thanks!
Hi Erik, for a 2.1 a 30mm width would be fine, and on a gravel bike it would stiffen the side wall for protection as people are likely running a very light casing to keep weight down. I still think a 27mm is more ideal for total compliance and the brands never stop making new stuff to sell. As far as a goldilocks, this is hard as people have a preference for feel. I follow the widths in the chart I put in the video, and also rune different width front and rear on all my bikes based on what I want the tire to do. A 2.4 on a 30mm will be more round and roll faster in the rear than a 2.4 on the front with a 35mm inner creating a higher traction patch for cornering and not drifting as much. Specialized tends to do their research and there is obviously people who want higher traction with less air and this wheel would help with that by supporting a stiff sidewall. They also make 50 versions of everything so they keep market share, lol....
The problem with running wide rim, narrow tyre on mtb is that the side knobs become part of the straight line wear profile, which feels yuck and wears out the knobs faster. On a gravel bike, you don't tip the bike over onto the side knobs to corner so the tyres are designed as such and a narrower tyre will pair with a wider rim.
Strong & wide aluminium wheels have no flex built in them and modern carbon wheels often have radial give built into them, all sorts of compliance or strength are built in wheels.
This is something you actually want. The front to be a bit stiffer for cornering control, and the rear a bit more flex for better following and deflection as it hits items. You also manage this with spoke count. wider, stronger, stiffer front, but 28 spokes, slightly narrower rear with a bit of flex, but 32 spoke to withstand the impacts of a rear. think of this as a way to truly dial in your ride.
How about rigid touring cromo niner that can fit 2.4-2.6 max and travel with heavy load on ruff terain? What's best rim for this setup? Obviously i wana low pressure its only suspension i have
If you can run the 2.6 and find a rim with 35mm inner you can run lower pressure this way and get a batter ride. Stay 30mm and wider Inner width. I run 35mm inner of a 2.4 tire and love it. 2.6 would be even better for your rigid!
I ride 2.8 inch tires on 35 mm internal width rims and I wanted to change them for 2.6 inch tires because, while I like the traction they offer, they feel a bit heavy sometimes. Do you think the 2.6 tires would perform and adapt good on this rim? Thanks
So i have a 2021 Stumpjumper alloy comp. Stock the bike comes with 30mm internal width rims. I want to upgrade my wheelset for better engagement and an XD driver freehub to I9's 101 aluminum wheels. They offer the trail 27mm inner and the enduro s 30.5mm width. Should i stick with the 30.5 enduro type wheel or go 27mm trail to get a lower weight? i like the 2.3 to 2.4 tire profile overall. I don't do crazy jumps or anything so curious which i should go with. I'm thinking 30.5 to keep in the same dimension when specialized designed the bike.
If you are staying 2.3 or 2.4 and riding trail and not doing long, technical, rocky descents, the trail wheel at 27mm internal will work great. I would save the weight on a bike of that travel that is a trail rider!!
It will work. It will have a rounded profile which will create a more supple sidewall so air pressure will need to be kept up to avoid pinch flats or rim damage. The advantage is the supple sidewall, if you get the air right, it will feel good on the trail.

That is definitely a lot of rim for that tire. the M635 would work, but the M630 would be better at that tire width. Great wheels, hopefully, they let you exchange!
I would think 40mm internal will be ok for a 2.6, it will just have a flattened profile, which in the front can be good for cornering. In the rear I would think it would not be as good.
Can you ride with 35mm rim with a hub 135x10 100x9 QR. Saw this good price on the rim with 35mm internal rim width, so I was just thinking buying a hub and spoke for it but my bike is only for QR
The tire will be pretty ssquared off and not flex well. Better to have a 2.4 or bigger if you can. If on the rear it is not bad, on the front it will sacrafice some corner grip due to the sidewall stiffness and deflection.
Hi, I ride maxxis assegai 2.5 in a Marin alpine XR and I just change my rims for the dmr zone 35mm and added front and rear cush core do you think this is optimal?
Hi, I gota pair of 700C wheels, with a internal Rim Beed width of 0.6 inch (15.24mm). Can you Pls suggest what the widest tyre I can fit there...will 700x35c go there? Thanks
You can run the same size, either of your shared dimensions. It changes the tire profile, faster rolling in the back, higher traction in the front. For a faster back you can go to a 2.3.
Yes it will fit. It might have a stiff sidewall, but that means lower pressure could be possible, test that put! On the front that means higher corner traction.

If you are getting crash replacements, that is different from the manufacturer's warranty. And if you are a hucker who smashes, and you go ride remotely, this is a tough idea as you will get to walk out 15 miles. But, if you are a near the car rider then I guess walking back is OK verus bending and riding.
I read that on another site, 2.6 is you medium and best tire size. I did some research with that size. I just couldn't find anything about putting wide rim on the narrow hub. It seems like it will be ok.
If 34mm is the inner width about a 2.3, if it is the outer rim width, then a 2.1 would work. Anything narrower will start to create a stiff ride with straight sidewalls.
Reading MTBR, I'm coming to the conclusion that 30mm works best for the stuff I want to run which is 2.3-2.5" wide tires. 35mm seems to be for 26" and up. 35mm up front for Enduro but what tire width?

The only available stock in my local bike shop is Cushcore Plus for 32mm-45mm rims / 2.6 to 3.0 tires. My rims are 32mm but my tire is only 2.4. Will it work fine or will it be too cramped inside?
Can I run a DHR2 2.4WT with a 25mm internal
You can, it will just be a little rounded and require slightly higher air pressure.
Hey buddy, how about 29mm internal? Too much different between 29mm and 30mm? And for 29mm rims what tires width so you recommend? And buy the way, is 29mm considered XC?
29 and 30 are super close. That is a great width for 2.3 or 2.4 tires. What might make it xc vs trail is the number of spokes and rim strength.
@@LoamRoamer Amazing explanation. How about rim depth. I dont see people talk about rims depth a lot, is it not important? I found these carbon wheels, 30mm inner width which is what I was looking for but the Depth is 30mm, is that too much? I often see 25mm.
How are19mm rims and 35mm tyres?
I want to build a Hybrid bike with mtb frame and road bikes rim and tyre. Does this works?
Yes
So I bought a pair of enve m6 40plus and didn't do enough research I have a 27.5 niner rdo the new enve I bought are 40 mil internal and mybtires are 2.5 😅 I'm guessing I need to send these back asap. As it's th e same tire but wider rim please advice 🙏
That is definitely a lot of rim for that tire. the M635 would work, but the M630 would be better at that tire width. Great wheels, hopefully, they let you exchange!
@@LoamRoamer biggest tire I can fit on my bike is 2.6 will that work with these enves
I sent them back and picked up brand new m630 thanks man
Mmm i bought a 2.6inch for a 40mm internal rim width 27,5inch... Might be a tad too small, i wonder how it will go.
I would think 40mm internal will be ok for a 2.6, it will just have a flattened profile, which in the front can be good for cornering. In the rear I would think it would not be as good.
Hey loam roamer is it ok to put a 2.40 tires on my 20mm rim ???
You can do it, it will be round and require some higher air pressure so it will feel firm. But yes, you can.
hi
can i install my 2.40 tires to 40mm rims?
You can, they will be very squared off. If the inner width is 40mm then better off with 2.6 or bigger. If outer is 40 tltou will be fine.
Great video. Thank you
Can you ride with 35mm rim with a hub 135x10 100x9 QR. Saw this good price on the rim with 35mm internal rim width, so I was just thinking buying a hub and spoke for it but my bike is only for QR
That would work just fine.
Would it be good to have 35mm IW rim to a 2.3" tire
The tire will be pretty ssquared off and not flex well. Better to have a 2.4 or bigger if you can. If on the rear it is not bad, on the front it will sacrafice some corner grip due to the sidewall stiffness and deflection.
Hi, I ride maxxis assegai 2.5 in a Marin alpine XR and I just change my rims for the dmr zone 35mm and added front and rear cush core do you think this is optimal?
That should be an awesome setup.
Hi,
I gota pair of 700C wheels, with a internal Rim Beed width of 0.6 inch (15.24mm). Can you Pls suggest what the widest tyre I can fit there...will 700x35c go there?
Thanks
Yes, it will work. It will be a little rounded and need a little higher air pressure is all.
Okay,
thanks for your help
If you run a 35mm front with 30mm rear what size tire would you use? Same 2.4 front and back or would you go 2.5 front 2.5 back?
You can run the same size, either of your shared dimensions. It changes the tire profile, faster rolling in the back, higher traction in the front. For a faster back you can go to a 2.3.
Will 2.6 inch assegai be ok for 30mm inner rim (WAO Union 27.5) for front tire? (Its for a girl~ 125lb)
Will work great.
I have a 27.5x1.5 tire, what rim size should I use? is a 20mm inner width an optimal size?
Dang, that is a skinny tire. I would not have an answer on that skinny.
Planning to buy 29er rim 35mm internal width... Can i fit 2.4 tire? Thank you...
Yes it will fit. It might have a stiff sidewall, but that means lower pressure could be possible, test that put! On the front that means higher corner traction.
@@LoamRoamer thanks you... i will make it tubeless... no problem??
Spank 395+ ang maxxis ardent 2.4
27mm inner width for 2.50WT would I die?
Lol, no. This made me think of the movie scene where Mr Chow says, “ But did you die?”
@@LoamRoamer 27mm with Assegai 2.50wt, that's what I'm about to do Im riding mostly rockies and steep sections and a lil bit of jumps.
Thanks for the reply! 🤘
what is the best tire for 25mm inner and 30mm outer rim?
1.8 to 2.25 would work well
Can a 1.95mm tire fits with a 27mm internal and 32mm outer width rim?
Why do Loic Bruni and Troy Brosnan run 25mm internal in World Cup DH? High speed and gnarly tracks
They run what they like for their riding style. Other pros run 35mm.
My bike is a 26er and outer rim width is 25mm. Can i use 2.20 tyres on it?
Yes, 26 x 2.2 will work if they fit the frame
I have a 27.5x2.10 maxxis freeflow..
what is the optimal rim width for this?
24 to 27 mm ID
Any decent carbon rim (and Enve) will have a lifetime warranty, so actually they might be better for those who smash rims a lot.
If you are getting crash replacements, that is different from the manufacturer's warranty. And if you are a hucker who smashes, and you go ride remotely, this is a tough idea as you will get to walk out 15 miles. But, if you are a near the car rider then I guess walking back is OK verus bending and riding.
@@LoamRoamer I pushed my bike 5km the other day .... I was Not HAPPY LoL
Hi I do have a 20.5mm inner width of my rim. Just bought a 2.2" tire. Does it fit? Thanks
Yes, the tire will have a more rounded profile and need a bit more air to manage that.
My Enduro came with a 35 inner width, what's the smallest tires can I fit on?
A 2.3 will work but be blocky so may feel like it transitions to cornering poorly. 2.4 and up will work well.
I read that on another site, 2.6 is you medium and best tire size. I did some research with that size. I just couldn't find anything about putting wide rim on the narrow hub. It seems like it will be ok.
What's the recommend inner rim width for rear wheel in trail/enduro type riding?
28 to 30mm inner
@@LoamRoamer tnx for the reply bro. Appreciate
My rims are 29 mm inne, can i put 2.4-2.5 in those rims?
That will work great.
what is the slimmest tires i can put on 34 mm wide rims?
If 34mm is the inner width about a 2.3, if it is the outer rim width, then a 2.1 would work. Anything narrower will start to create a stiff ride with straight sidewalls.
@@LoamRoamer thank you for this
Is it okay to put wide tires in a narrow rims?
Yes, it will just feel soft on the sidewall.
Thanks!
Hi! What rim width is perfect fit for 2.20 tire?
25mm would be the best 27mm would be very good in my opinion.
Is there any rim that works well for a range of 2.25 - 2.40 ?
25 to 30mm. If 2.25 in back 25/27 internal. 2.4 up front 30mm internal mixed width. Will be super awesome.
30mm 😎
Reading MTBR, I'm coming to the conclusion that 30mm works best for the stuff I want to run which is 2.3-2.5" wide tires. 35mm seems to be for 26" and up.
35mm up front for Enduro but what tire width?
It can be, I like the profile of a 2.4 magic mary on a 35mm inner up front. 30mm works great for the range you are tlking about.
@@LoamRoamer I only intend to run DHF DHRII on these and have DHF and DHR II on my other bikes.
Now sure how that will turn out with a DHF 2.5" on a 35mm vs 30mm. Right now I've got some 2.3" DHF DHRII on there on WTB STp i29s. They don't even have eyelets...
I ride 30mm for gravel too LOL 😂
If I was 650b I would for sure. I keep thinking about doing this to improve the comfort of the bike!!
Any diagram to visualize what you are narrating? So that it make sense to watch a video clip instead of just listen to a podcast.
there is a link in the description to a very specific video diagram.
Why talk about bikes. Was supposed to be about rims. I ride a trek 1120 with Sun Duroc 50’s. This video did nothing for me !
Glad to help with the chasm of emptiness.
1000'th one! Thanks for the great and in-depth video!
Awesome! Thank you!
Hi sir i have a tires for 29er 2.25 xc build. which rims size for inner , outer width , narrow or wide ? works well ? Hope u notice me . Thanksalot
27mm internal width would be great here. 25mm will work, but if you ever want to go to a wider tire it will be better to go 27mm
i have a 29er 30mm inner width rim, whats the smallest tire it can fit in? im using 2.5 aggressor front and 2.5 dhf front. its a bit sluggish.
how much difference in terms of rolling speed between 2.5 and 2.4?
2.25 would work fine.
