  • In this episode, I demonstrate how to remove the valve cover, replace the valve cover gasket and replace the valve cover on a Mazda Miata. It's geared toward the NA and NB models.
    I also cover inspecting the timing belt and painting the valve cover while it's removed from the car.
    Filmed in 720p HD quality with a Kodak Zi6 camera. Edited in iMovie '09 on a MacBook.

    Post-Production Notes:
    * At the end, I said that if you follow these instructions you will have an "oil free top of your motor." I meant to say that you would have an "oil leak free top of your motor."

    You produce the best video tutorials for miata maintenance, thank you so much. PLEASE PLEASE do a water pump/timing belt replacement episode or episodes as I have yet to find any that really walk through each step as clearly and concisely as I KNOW that you would. You rock!

    Best tutorial ever! Just completed it on my 99 NB. So helpful! Just be aware on the NB that there might be a wiring harness connector on the passenger side, and that there might be a sensor on the front passenger side too. Cleaned it and painted it a beautiful Gold. Great contrast to the rest od the motor! Thank you so much!
    Also: its a great idea to buy the parts on RockAuto, great prices! Its also the perfect time to change plugs with the valve cover off.
    Edit: DO NOT BUY A CHEAP GASKET. ALWAYS BUY OEM. AFTER MARKET GASKET WILL LEAK AND/OR FAIL. I JUST REPLACED MINE WITH OEM AND SO FAR NO ISSUES!!!

    Very thorough work! Sanding off the tops of the cover badge would give it a little contrast and sparkle. Great reason to do work yourself - shops do not clean parts like this.

    Yes, the gasket is visable from the sides after installed, But it does not stick out of the sides. It is a thick gasket that fits into a channel on the valve cover as shown and the cover is not screwed down so tight as to completely crush the gasket.

    How long should you let the gasket sealant cure before you start your engine? Certainly not right after you install the valve cover back on??

    Harbor Freight has a inch pound torque wrench for $20. Pickled up a slightly different model at the store that was unfortunately just 1/4" so you might need an adapter for your sockets.

    I like the organization and thoroughness of your production. And the editing is good as well. One thing that I noticed is that in some of the interior shots it was too dark to see what you were shooting, Perhaps a small light would help? And some of the macro shots were a little fuzzy. Actually the light would also help those shots as well since it will cause a small aperture on your camera which will increase the depth of field. Just my 2 cents.

    awesome video, I just replaces my gasket thanks to this video HOWEVER I really struggled with the two bolds in the rear, they were pain because it was really hard to get to them. I also ennded up cracking my breather hose, it cracked right where it plugs into the engine cover, its still okay but has a crack, IS THIS something I have to replace right away? What happens if I do not replace a breather hose right away? thank you!

    Does anyone know why he says to tighten the engine cover bolts in a circular pattern as opposed to a star pattern?

  • @saxdudegcgt7217
    @saxdudegcgt7217 7 років тому +1

    Did you have any issues after doing this? I also replaced the valve gasket on my NA and driving it the first time was fine but the second time i heard what sound like sparking from the spark plugs in the back but it went away as it was heating up so i didnt give it much thought. After I was driving for about 5 minutes i lost almost all power and was putting out a lot of smoke and the car wouldnt idle on its own meaning i had to keep giving it gas to stay running but it sounded so so bad. The engine still turns but sounds really bad when it runs for the 2 seconds it can before dying again. I could smell coolant, oil, and gas so i know its not good. I am confused what i did wrong because i used rubber gasket sealant on all the curved corners and the gasket was seated properly in the cover. Do you or anyone have any ideas? Right now I am afraid to touch the car and will likely get it professionally checked out.

  • @XGempler
    @XGempler 12 років тому

    No, this has noting to do with coolant. You probably have a leak in the coolant system. It could be a bad hose but possibly a bad radiator or radiator cap. If the radiator or the hoses have never been replaced than they should be due to age. If you want to only replace the faulty part you can rent a radiator pressure tester to help locate the source of the problem. There is another youtube video that shows how to do this on a miata, but a second gen miata, though the procedure is the same.

  • @chrisspencer5792

    You shouldn't even use the torque wrench. you are turning the bolt a 1/8 of a turn after the wrench clicks telling you its tight enough. Just an observation.

      Chris Spencer what

    • @MrKristian12
      @MrKristian12 6 років тому

      He kinda has a point. The purpose of the torque wrench "click" is to let the person know that they hit the torque spec. If you tighten past that you are going over that torque spec...

    just for safety measure, is it okay to put a thin film of the RTV sealant around the whole perimeter of the head cylinder instead of just the corners and the grooves you've mentioned in the video? I just don't want to have to risk having my valve cover leak again, it's a easy job but just takes a long time especially for my Audi

    Generally a good video. However, all pieces attached to the cover, (grommets, wire brackets), should probably be removed before the cleaning. Also, all openings like the plug wells and bolt holes, should be masked so paint will not get in.
