Hey Guys, As you have probably noticed already i have updated the channel name and logo. The channel is no longer Really Random Channel it is now RRC Restoration. Just incase you were wondering why the water marks in the video still say Really Random Channel. Enjoy.
I really like what you've done. I don't think I have the knowledge you do. My engine is in pieces at a shop and I would like to do it while it's out. Would a body shop understand the process? Perhaps I can get them to wait while I get the cover and do it myself. That's really a difference-maker when you eyeball it.
On the subject of buying new parts (not related to cars) I basically rebuilt my family’s dryer, new motor, new belt, new heating element, new sensors, works like new.
That's a fantastic restoration ! It's great that you took the time to detail all the interior baffles and splash plates, such thorough work. The end result is amazing - suitable for a Miata Testa Rossa !
I did an almost identical job to a spare cam cover for my 1.8 Mk1 (Same as this one I believe). Only difference is that I went a bit crazy with the cleaning. I ended up cleaning it, Then cooking it in the oven for a couple of hours to bring as much as possible of the remaining oil to the surface, Then used an old steam wallpaper stripper to get it really oil free before sanding and spraying gloss black, Sanding back the lettering with 80 grit for a heavy brushed look, Then several coats of lacquer. I finished it off with a machined alloy oil filler cap. It looked stunning, So I put it safely away in a box in readiness for the next cambelt change........ But before that came around I knackered my back and needed to sell my precious MX5 to get something more spine cossetingly sensible. :( I kept the collection of upgrades I hadn't got around to fitting for over a year before I realised that my back was never going to be good enough for me to get another MX5, So I sold everything off (That cam cover, A couple of service kits, A reconditioned Torsen type 2 dif, A full set of second hand wishbones that I'd had chemically stripped and powder coated, New chassis braces, + lots of other stuff). I'd been carefully collecting cool bit's to go on that car for over 2 years, Finally selling them all off broke my bloody heart. It felt like a book just finishing mid sentence without actually ending the story. :( .............. God, I miss my old MX5. :(
Hey thanks for you comment and your rather upsetting tale. There is nothing worse than spending lots of time and effort on a project only for circumstances beyond your control stop you from completing it. I hope your not in too much pain with your back these days. RRC
Thank you for making this automotive twist, I love the fact you are reviving these parts, your videos help me with my own project. I really wish you success and I admire your effort and skills.
Wow, what an amazing result. Most people don't understand what all goes into doing something like this and what it takes to get results like this. Great work buddy. Looks awesome.
Dude ! You are so freaking fast ! I could hardly keep up. I'll bet you could do an entire car in like a couple of hours, lol. JK, your work quality is amazing - it turned out to be a beautiful cover. 10 out of 10
Much thanks for this video. I got a red 2002 mazda miata lS 6 speed. Other videos never show the proccess of removing the valve cover and all the bolts and stuff. Im thinking of going with a wrinkle red color to match the paint.
damn! Would have loved to see that put back into the car. Love your videos...best ASMR ever. I have an anxiety disorder with a bit of OCD and cleaning and restoring stuff calms me down. Your videos relaxes me and helps me fall asleep! :) Thank you!
Degreaser and a half an hour in a dishwasher gets rocker covers (and other car/bike parts) 100% clean and shiny without all the elbow grease, not as satisfying as doing it by hand but a lot quicker if you are short on time for the same result. Also if you put a limescale descaler tablet in with it, it can sometimes remove the build up of grime/limescale reducing the need for as much sanding afterwards. Amazing job by the way! So satisfying seeing the end result after all that hard work.
Good job!!! - When i've done this in the past.. I've always bought a second hand one and restored that first and then swapped out for the one on the car.. covers you in case anything goes wrong and you can also get some of your money back from selling the surplus one (or restoring the other one as well and possibly hitting a profit! as some people will buy them to save them the hassle!! :) )
ABSOLUTE M-A-S-T-E-R-P-I-E-C-E! I'm stunned. Sanding the MAZDA logo and the DOHC 16Valve writing and re-glossing everything really sent me off the wall. This is detail perfection! Too bad we did't see the cover put back on the engine!
I'd let this guy give me a root canal. What a fantastic video..so informative and well done...thank you !! Watched every second of it..I'd pay you to do that to mine..
@@nickbrock6894 this is far from what a ricer would do. A ricer would go to their local walmart and buy some non high heat paint and paint it without any prep work.
Very satisfying to watch. Fast forwarding, no excessive talking or noise, clear steady video, great results. Couple of questions. Was it necessary to rtv the plates back in because I didn't see any old rtv when you took them off? Will the clear coat hold up against engine temperatures? I'll echo someone elses comment below. The only thing hold this back from being perfect was no mention of brand of materials used or measurements. Those details could be added after the fact in the video description. Great job.
Hey, Thanks for your comment and suggestions. Im glad you enjoyed the video :). The plates were put back in with RTV as there was a layer on there from the factory, its quite difficult to see on the video. The lacquer will easily stand up to the temps as the bodywork of a black car standing in the summer sun all day gets waaay hotter then a rocker cover and the lacquer holds up just fine in that situation year after year ;)
What a great video . You are not just doing a video you're proving how to work hard and be passionate what you about to do or what you want to do. I love your work it is inspirational and how to use the old one and instead of buying a new one . I would like to give you five stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. EDU from Ethiopia 🇪🇹
This is one of the most satisfying videos I have ever watched on UA-cam. I appreciate the work you do & I wish I could get your quality of work done on my car. Definitely subscribed after seeing this video. Much Respect
Excellent work on the top there I'm about to purchase hopefully a little MX5 of my own and your little example there will help me get started with things I'd like to get done on it thanks a lot again. Great video.
AMAZING paint job. I would have appreciated to see it fully assembled back into the car though. Also, very nice trick with the sandpaper on the masking tape on the oil cap orifice. Learned a new trick today!
Hey, Thanks for your comment i didnt show it back on the car as there are other jobs being done on the engine at the moment ;) Glad you learned a trick of the trade from my video :)
Very nice, even clear coated with hardener it looks like, a step i see a lot of people miss out. I Think they think, oh it looks finished but don't realise how much easier it is to chip paint without it.
I don't understand why 880 ppl down voted? Whatever I guess they don't understand greatness! You did a awesome job, I have been thinking of restoring my Subaru Outback and this really inspired me. Thank you for the fun and well made video. Keep up the good work.
Very enjoyable! My hope is that you're doing a full engine bay restoration in the usual style, because that would be incredibly satisfying to watch. Looked great at the end!
Hey folks, Im loving the warm reception you've given the automotive restoration twist the channel hast taken in the past couple of videos :). With that being said i would love to hear your input into what else you would like to see restored thats linked to to the automotive world whether its random automobilia, a specific car or motorbike part, a vintage automotive tool? etc. All ideas are welcome . And again id like to thank everyone for helping the channel grow and bring you even more content. RRC
Hey, Really Random Channel, I have a question: do you have to install those small plates back? Is it nescesary? Can you run without 'em? I mean like, it should not do enythinh wrong, also less weight. Or it'll damage the engine?
Stanisław Batory Sama renowacja spoko - oczyszczanie, lakierowanie; ) ale tez nie rozumiem silikonowania :) myślałem, że tylko Polska jest przodownikiem silikonu:-) Ale oceniając renowacje duzy plus. Pozdro
If you are going to continue doing these refurbishing projects, and I hope you do, you need to get two pieces of equipment. First a parts cleaner, so you can clean the parts a lot easier. Second a media blaster. That will allow you to prep items and get into very tight corners and such. But you do great work either way/
Hey, Thanks very much for your comment and suggestions, If you watch my new videos you will see that i now have a media blaster and i have a new parts washer but just not set up yet ;)
Great video. One of the best ones out there. You could watch this just for the entertainment value alone. I like how you speed up the tedious parts. I just did my Valve cover in 24 minutes. lol

where can I see what products you used in this process.
instablaster.
What are you spraying on the parts? 9:04
I realy love people not buying new car parts and restoring what they have. Instant subbed
No one buys a new rocker cover? They are hugely expensive.
I like this coment
You must not buy used cars if you love people doing this
On the subject of buying new parts (not related to cars) I basically rebuilt my family’s dryer, new motor, new belt, new heating element, new sensors, works like new.
A real perfectionist doing what he does best
When your valve cover has a better paint job then the actual car.
Just wait for it ...;-)
I've never seen someone "cut" tape by just sanding on the edge instead of getting a razor blade or something. Really cool trick!
I liked that as well.
That's a fantastic restoration ! It's great that you took the time to detail all the interior baffles and splash plates, such thorough work. The end result is amazing - suitable for a Miata Testa Rossa !
Thank you :)

I feel ya man, same thing happend to my Suzuki Sierra. Man did I love that car😔😔😤. Now I've got a 2004 ford falcon 😐
I realize I almost read this whole thing,I stopped because I came to UA-cam for videos
Awesome job! It's great to hear the clanging noise from the tools rather then the blasting music. Thumb up.
Thank you, Glad you liked it :)
Best ASMR for mechanics I´ve ever heard ...
Beautiful! Polishing the markings really made a huge difference and I went through the whole video hoping you would do so, I was not disappointed!
Hey,Thanks for the comment. I'm very glad you weren't disappointed.
One of the best Mazda rocker cover restos I've seen on here, and there are lots.
Hey, That is certainly high praise indeed. Thank you very much. RRC
I'm very impressed by the result, despite a lack of sand or glass bead blasting the surface finish is really astounding!
Thank you very much for your kind comment! :)
Is the valve cover the same as the 1.8 cover?
There's nothing more satisfying, in the world of working on cars, than a restored rocker cover
I'd love to see the rest of the car restored like this, you did a fantastic job.
It’s a bit more work to do every component of the car believe it or not
Good old fashioned elbow grease and simple tools can make anything happen. The end result is amazing!
Best video so far on this topic. Straight to the point . No BS. only if all the videos were like this
Thank you for making this automotive twist, I love the fact you are reviving these parts, your videos help me with my own project.

Hey, Thanks for your comment and i wish you luck in your own projects.
Best ASMR

That was awesome. Love the detail. Thanks for showing the various tools and supplies that it took. The little details are what make the difference.
No problem, Im glad my video could teach you a few tricks :)
It looks fantastic, if they did that at the factory it would really give the impression of a more prestigious car . Great to watch
And would raise the price of a car who point was to be affordable and fun. Some of that fun can be doing mods like this.
Much thanks for this video. I got a red 2002 mazda miata lS 6 speed. Other videos never show the proccess of removing the valve cover and all the bolts and stuff. Im thinking of going with a wrinkle red color to match the paint.

Wouldn't it make your dish washer smell like degreaser
I wouldn't do it. I would think it would leave an oily film inside the dish washer, but what do I know. Someone else can try it and get back to us.
mr Brown wow that is very glossy Mazda cover engine
Loving the Tabby Action at the end of the video
That's an awesome technique for masking when you hit the edges of the tape with sandpaper on the valve cover cap.
