Ok, you dont need to mess with the plug under the steering column at all. And there is no need to repressurize the fuel system either. Just pull the fuel pump fuse and start the car. It will die. Replace the filter and reinsert the fuse. Turn key to on position and let it sit for a second or 2 then start the car.
I am a proud owner of a white 1990 NA (built in 89!!) and I must say these videos are very helpful. I like how you include good visual aid while explaining as most of us are visual learners. Thanks for the uploads, I hope that you add more to your list soon!
The video helped. But I could not get the plug under the dash to disconnect - so I just used small vice grips to clamp the rubber fuel lines shut. I also found it best to remove the right rear tire for access. I found that removing the 2 top mounting bolts for the fuel filter bracket made it easier to get the bottom line to disconnect since you can hold the rubber line with pliers and pull and twist on the filter. Be prepared to have lots of fuel come out of the old filter as well. 94LBlue too.
This tutorial was a HUGE help, thanks so much. Might be worth mentioning that I just pinched off the fuel hose and did not unplug the fuel pump or have to re-prime upon completion. Also worth noting to not use a cheap pen to block off the fuel line at first. Mine BROKE OFF inside of the line forcing me to replace the small section of hose. Anyways, thanks again and keep them coming...
I did this yesterday after seeing this video. Worked like a charm. The connection between F/P and Ground in the Diagnostics looked a bit experimental (and was different then in my instruction manual), but worked great! THe yellow plug is located a bit on the left side. Thanx for posting this, very helpfull!
No need to bridge the fuel pump circuit. when you turn the key to the on position the fuel pump primes the line. just turn the they to the on position about three times for about five seconds each. should start right up.
Great Video. I wanted to mention that when I went to do mine the tubes didn't have the tension hose clamps. Instead both connections had pressure clips. These are released by squeezing them and sliding the hose off at the same time. I was able to reuse mine. You have to use a small flat screwdriver and tease the hard clips off of the old fuel filter and reinstall them onto the new one. I have a NB or 2000LS Miata.
A great trick to get frozen lines off an item is to take pliers and rotate the line back and forth 1/8 a turn. The rotational torque will free the line to make it easier to slide off.
Fantastic guide. Thanks for taking the time to do this, it's made my life so much easier ! I cleaned out my tank, replaced the filter and then as you explained, repressurised the fuel system by placing the short wire on the FP on the diagnostics terminal !! Thanks ! Great video !
Wear plastic gloves to keep fuel from contacting your skin. Also twist the fuel lines with pliers to loosen them and they will come right off. No fighting.
Nice video, helped me a lot...the one part that was kind of funny to me was that you plugged the fuel line with a pen...the pen has a hole in the end of it and its essentially hollow so that gas went right through it and it was dripping out of the other end of the pen during the video. Awesome tutorial though ;).
I use a golf tee to plug the fuel lines. I keep a few in my garage to plug fuel lines and vacuum hoses. Better than an ink pen. This was most helpful thanks.
Hy man your videos r awesome I will do that stuff when I get my miata at the end of the summer. It will be my first car and I was wondering if you could give me a few tips about the car. I also can't do all those things at once to my car but if I was to pick 1 of those things to do to it what would it be?
Hey, I have a really low idle on mine, I haven't figured out what it could be, but I'm thinking vacuum leak, or a dirty throttle body. Can you do a video on this? That would be fantastic! I love your videos, I've done all the work on my car from watching them!
Just some tips on your videos, but I think you should add detailed lists of things to buy so I dont have to continuously rewind to know what youre saying and to also have description boxes when there is loud noises in the background when youre giving instructions. Other than that, keep up the good work!
can you please do a video showing the front bumper removal process? i have looked online but cant find a diagram. i like your videos they are very well done looks professional. cheers.
(cont) simply start it and go - the starter will 'try' for about 3-4 times -- not go crazy, just give it 3 'quick' blip-starts on the key and by #4 start it as normal. My way is better becasue you elimatate all teh unecessary steps ebgning and end, AND you replace that 20 year old fuel line that takes WAY to long to get off in order to 'save it' PFF
+Pablo Ortiz - a paperclip works just fine, or any other wire. You just need to jumper F-P and GND on the bottom part of the diagnostic port, as shown.
I just found you on YOU TUBE and have a question, I was out for a ride and the car was running great and then as i pulled from a light the started to sputter and acted like it was running out of gas and quit I cant get it stared again any ideas what I could do?
My NB is displaying a P0300 CEL code (random misfire) and this will be my first step in attempting a fix...next will be vacuum leak checks. Thanks for this video!
Most likely electric related problem and I would bet money it's your ignition coils. Mine went bad on my 99 and was causing a misfire. Still not a bad idea change your fuel filter anyway as maintenance.
I am having the worst luck with my miata.... auto trans... I have a shaky engine from time to time... the engine light said it's tcm problem, but the auto shop said they don't have that part. I read about ecu and tcm confusion, but still a bit lost. any help?
I've been working on a recently acquired 1996 and I have to say these cars suck to work on (plus a lot of stuffs location/assesability make no sense). Watching this video I can imagine a dozen or so better places to put this filter. Have fun fixing your Cam Angle Sensor (or the two coolant hoses under the intake manifold) !!
THis is all good but I got a problem. My MIata doesn't have engine and transmission. It has an electric motor and 11 deep cycle batteries...sooo i dont have any of these problems... THanks
What year is this car.. mines a 1999. Mine has either been screwed with or slightly different. Mine has a different clamping method on the fuel fliter lines, and seems to have a teed off point running to another line other than the outlet for the fuel fliter.. -_-
Great video, Just replaced the filter on my 93,It died 1/2 block from the house, I forgot to pressurize the system but started right up. I did the jumper F/P 7 GND jumper after it died but still wont start. I can hear the fuel pump running with the jumper installed. Help!
Hi, my miata won't turn on im guessing its somewhere alone the fuel system. Just wondering how i check the fuel pressure on a NA MX-5. If this is the case i know if i need to replace pump and filter. Thanks
I LOVE YOU, THANK U FOR THIS VIDEO!!!!! ^___^ My 1999 Mazda Miata shakes and wants to stall at stop signs, and doesn't maintain power when i press the accelerator. So I think it's the fuel filter. I HOPE it's the fuel filter lol. Down hill the red "check engine" light is solid red, but up hill the light blinks at me and shakes pretty bad. I'm going to buy the fuel filter, a generic one i guess. But which one to buy???? I will call oreileys car part store and ask them.
my miata was running great n I started driving down the road n it started to spit and sputtering n then shut off let it set a minute or two n it started up n shut off again then I started it aging n it running like nothing is wrong before all this started I put a additive in the gas to clean the injection system
thank you for making this video i just did this on my 99nb after it died on me sitting on my driveway. now it wont turn on just cranks i have change fuel filter fuel pump and nothin. there is no pressure on fuel lines no fuel at all. pulled spark plugs and they are dry. what would you recomend doing next? thanks
No preasure, leaks ? Battery voltage/life correct ? Fuses correct? If all above no than wiring, conections or pump/ injectors may be malfunctioning and may need to be replaced. If you didnt play with ECT ignition etc than there is nor much more to fuel system. I would say if all sparks are dry then look first after your fuel pump.
Hi there, My miata 97 does not show a litght when the fuel is low, I dont know if it even should so my question is, is there a light on a fuel gauge that lights up when the fuel is low? thank you
DeepOne I also have a 97. No, there is no light for when the fuel is low. The rule of thumb is when the needle hits Empty (or close to it), fill it up as soon as possible. You may have several miles left on that tank of gas, but since there is no light, it's better to be safe than sorry.
thanks mate, I sold the miata and now am a proud driver of a pickup truck :-D but I do plan on getting one down the road, man that car was so fuel efficient....
Because that would also cut the ignition. The purpose is to have engine running and then cut the fuel supply while the engine is running in order to let the engine use up the remaining pressurised fuel until it stalls. That way the fuel system is depressurised.
To much unnecessary shit here. First off, dont disconnect anything under the dash - simply take off the gas gap and go - the miata system doesnt make an anormous ammount of fuel pressure under any circumstance. Simply begin by taking off the fuel lines at the filter. The exit line is always crudded and stuck on becasue of gravity - its quicker to CUT IT at the harlines with a knife and have a replacement hose handy. The last step of 'priming' the pump is also a waste of time, simply start it
your video is not helpful...i followed your instructions in good faith and here were the problems i encountered that needed to be addressed: 1. they use two different types of bolts on the undercover of the steering wheel (star bolt and phillips) this ensures people have a hard time getting to the wires if they try to steal your car. So if you dont have a star wrench you are screwed.. 2. some people do not have a manual for their miata, so when you have to jack up the car it is helpful to know WHERE to do this. 3. the view of the fuel pump relay switch is AWFUL. the fuel pump relay switch is difficult to get to and LEVERAGE is very important - i could not figure out how to release it so this stopped me from depressurizing..the switch is located right above the accelerator - would have been nice to know.. 4. if you are trying to get the fuel pump relay switch off after you have taken the cover off then you must use a flashlight to see up into it...this tidbit would have been helpful..you also need a rolled up towel as a cushion for your knees while you try to get to the switch, otherwise you will be hurting..

TRUTH, just tested this, I did if about 5 times, didn't even sputter!

Thanks for the easy to follow guidline and video coverage of how to do this.
good video...to remove the second fuel line, it's much easier to gently hold the hose still with a pair of pliers while rotating the filer.
Thanks for the tutorial. I just picked up a Miata, and I think I'll be watching more of your videos. :)
All these videos have been incredibly useful :) but I would love to see a video about timing that would just top off everything
Really thorough tutorial. I like your presentation . Far too many gunked up fuel filters out there in the world!
Amazing job mate, just bought a 92 miata and this helped me a lot.
Keep it coming and thank you very much
Wear plastic gloves to keep fuel from contacting your skin. Also twist the fuel lines with pliers to loosen them and they will come right off. No fighting.

Thank you from Germany! Your videos helped me to replace the parts und fluids! Thumbs Up
Laguna Blue!
I own two laguna blues. A 95 tan and blue, and 94 black and blue that was wrecked and turboed I bought as a parts car.
I use a golf tee to plug the fuel lines. I keep a few in my garage to plug fuel lines and vacuum hoses. Better than an ink pen. This was most helpful thanks.
tip for removing any hose; try using a set of pliers and gently trying to twist, the twist will help brake it loose
loving your videos so far! keep it up, i've already learnt alot!
These videos are great. A shock and or spring replacement would be greatly appreciate. Thanks for all your work
Use priers to twist the fuel line and it while release its grip.
Chris Spencer, Yes sir, that’s what I do. Works every time.
I use pliers though...
Hy man your videos r awesome I will do that stuff when I get my miata at the end of the summer. It will be my first car and I was wondering if you could give me a few tips about the car. I also can't do all those things at once to my car but if I was to pick 1 of those things to do to it what would it be?
awesome tutorial!!! keep up the great job!! -Jerry from Tampa, Fl.
Don’t mess with any electrical connections.
No need to create problems.
Because, you know what they say, if anything can go wrong, it will...
na 1.6 miata doesnt turn on the fuel pump on at all when its on the on option with the key. You would need to jump it at the diag box
Excellent video and some serious HARDCORE music! :)
Hey, I have a really low idle on mine, I haven't figured out what it could be, but I'm thinking vacuum leak, or a dirty throttle body. Can you do a video on this? That would be fantastic! I love your videos, I've done all the work on my car from watching them!
did you firgure it out?
Your videos are great. I wish you would make more of them. Seems like you simply stopped after this episode.
I heard he took his own life. Remember you matter to someone!
Thanks ur video was really helpful. Best explanation on UA-cam.
Very helpful - thanks!
perfect video
Excellent Work
Just some tips on your videos, but I think you should add detailed lists of things to buy so I dont have to continuously rewind to know what youre saying and to also have description boxes when there is loud noises in the background when youre giving instructions. Other than that, keep up the good work!
a million great cars. (probably more actualy). Love my MX5.
Your videos are SOOO helpful
!
Great video
Great instructional video. Fought sounds funny when you say it 5 times.
could you please do a tutorial of replacing brake fluid? thank you!
Great video, just saved me 200$ keep up the good work thank you ++++AAAA
can you please do a video showing the front bumper removal process? i have looked online but cant find a diagram. i like your videos they are very well done looks professional. cheers.
In the intro at about :04 what is that blue clip behind the headlight? I just noticed that in my car today too.
accessory power. useful for timing light, fog lights, aftermarket horns etc.
brilliant !
(cont) simply start it and go - the starter will 'try' for about 3-4 times -- not go crazy, just give it 3 'quick' blip-starts on the key and by #4 start it as normal.

You are awesome, thank you.
That was very imformative, i am going to replace mine!
Instead of taking on the fuel pump plug, could you remove the fuel pump fuse?
or disconnect battery
at the end, what did you use to put pressure back on the fuel pump? was that a paper clip? can I use any wire or are there any specifics? thank you!
+Pablo Ortiz - a paperclip works just fine, or any other wire. You just need to jumper F-P and GND on the bottom part of the diagnostic port, as shown.
I love the idea of a battery miata! So awesome. Do you have resources on how to do that? Not that I need to right away but some day YES YES YES.
Because they are 20 year old pressure clamps... they go bad. Don't be cheap and get some new t-bolt clamps.
I just found you on YOU TUBE and have a question, I was out for a ride and the car was running great and then as i pulled from a light the started to sputter and acted like it was running out of gas and quit I cant get it stared again any ideas what I could do?
The fuel pump went out. You Need to replace the fuel pump.
RIP to your nice wooden pen
My NB is displaying a P0300 CEL code (random misfire) and this will be my first step in attempting a fix...next will be vacuum leak checks. Thanks for this video!

I cannot figure out which one is the fuel pump plug.. or how if I have the right one, to remove it. Very irritating. ..
Nevermind, someone has rewired mine, and it's not even plugged into the green inlet.. -_- wtf
What year is this car.. mines a 1999.
Mine has either been screwed with or slightly different. Mine has a different clamping method on the fuel fliter lines, and seems to have a teed off point running to another line other than the outlet for the fuel fliter.. -_-
Would it be better if you take of the fuel lines then unscrew the bolt
Would you make a video on Passenger Airbag Module replacement
Excellent tuition....would be improved if that soundtrack were to be removed - no need for annoying background music.
lol
Not same as NB - connectors are different.
Great video, Just replaced the filter on my 93,It died 1/2 block from the house, I forgot to pressurize the system but started right up.
I did the jumper F/P 7 GND jumper after it died but still wont start. I can hear the fuel pump running with the jumper installed.
Help!
did you fix the problem?
Hi, my miata won't turn on im guessing its somewhere alone the fuel system.
Just wondering how i check the fuel pressure on a NA MX-5.

+David Bergquist probably loosened something from the filter and clogged an injector
David Bergquist Sea Foam. should help clean that injector out and any deposits in the fuel system.
thank you for making this video i just did this on my 99nb after it died on me sitting on my driveway. now it wont turn on just cranks i have change fuel filter fuel pump and nothin. there is no pressure on fuel lines no fuel at all. pulled spark plugs and they are dry. what would you recomend doing next? thanks

Useful video thanks, but maybe drop the lousy music? Really doesn't enhance it, just a thought.
Always replace those clamps, just saying
I can't believe I just paid some place 120 bucks to do this.
No need to do that though. It was a waste of time. Just turn the key next time.

***** Well, my GF is wong too and we are getting married. Are you king or yellow? LOL
yes that's what we call yellow if your eye sight was normal youd be able to see it :-D
what year is your miata? looks nit
The nb cars have a more complicated fuel line connector. 4/10
have you done yours? any advice? Just got under mine today and couldnt figure out how to unclip the lines
why
More videos!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks, nice video. But horrible music.. still have headache!
Matthias Ziegler sensitive ass
more videos!!
why not just disconnect battery instead of unplugging connector?

@andywat62 Paper clip
Wrong. The NB uses online hose end clips
To much unnecessary shit here. I had to move on... don't have the ability to hear instructions over background music.
@bdsoccerman10 dood nice i wish i had a miata :)
there goes like 5 dollars of gas :P
Hi.
i fucken love how expertvillage told you to let the fuel spray out wow thats so fucking dangerous what if ur engine is really hot!!!
Say "and fought" again... More bad music please!
your video is not helpful...i followed your instructions in good faith and here were the problems i encountered that needed to be addressed:
1. they use two different types of bolts on the undercover of the steering wheel (star bolt and phillips) this ensures people have a hard time getting to the wires if they try to steal your car.
Stop your whinging old man, the video was great
dude, its freakin free advice!!!! Therefore, you have no right to post a lengthy negative response. You could ask for help, clarification politely, bro.
