Just 15 minutes into watching so far and spotted some of my animals, the ponies. 😂 Northharrier Kirch is the grey one trying to give you kisses, he's a sweetheart. Kirch was born on Foula and has never left the isle. I've owned him for the great majority of his 19 years. My 2 red and white ponies with him are also Foula born, mother and daughter pair Northharrier Reflection and Charliemay Rain-goose. Most of my others are from Unst arriving here on the ferry.
I got so nervous when Ruth was on the cliffs; I got butterflies in my tummy. I had to remind myself that I was home in my chair in front of my pc. That's entertainment. Thank you Ruth.
I went to the Faroe Islands in 2016. I've never seen the weather change so fast in a place, ever. This reminded me of my trip and I know these places aren't a million miles from each other. Looked a lovely island ☺👍
Love love those puffins. Adorable. So are the sheep and horses. You can get a real sense of the island by the woman tour guide. Her life was so hard just to get water. What a Renaissance Woman!! Wind, rain, fog or birds life goes on. No time to rest. Loved the video.
A bit about the Oceanic, it ended up on a reef called the Shaalds, a couple of clam divers decided to take a busman's holiday to Foula, and met up with a local fisherman who regularly caught "Rusty" lobsters, that's when they found out about the "Oceanic" wrecked on the reef called the "Shaalds". They managed to blag a ride in the fisherman's boat to check it out. Eventually, they spent seven years scrapping the liner, having many adventures and writing of their exploits in a book called "The Other Titanic" Ripping yarns, especially for a diver or not!😁
Feel like I’m at home by a fire with a mug of tea it’s raining outside and my dogs are nodding off every time I listen to these videos. Love your work Ruth

The ranger walk with Sheila was great! Ruth, you are the perfect tour guide. I love the history, local facts and travel information you share about these wonderful locations in Scotland. 👍😃
Nice ponies, very sociable. Sheila is a perfect guide who tells a lot about the history of the island. It was a hard walk you had in the rain when you visited the gorge, but it's nice afterwards when you get food and rest. Thanks for the trip Ruth. You are so nice.
I and I expect a lot of other people would love 48 hours on the Island , certainly get away from it all up there. One of the officers on the R.M.S Oceanic when it was wrecked was Charles Lightoller who later became famous in his role as the first officer on the Titanic..
I used to have a (mainland) croft with coloured Shetland sheep and the Shetland Sheep from Foula are quite sought after because they have some of the most interesting colours and coat patterns!

The movement of the air over head by the birds wings. Love those ponies. Thank you for staying out of the dangerous rock formation. We need you to continue your Scotish journeys. Much adored.
You finally got to see the puffins. You were able to capture some wonderful shots of those beautiful birds. The Shetland ponies seemed to really enjoy your company…very heart warming.
Naivete, is so precious because once it's lost it can only be replaced by experience! The truthfulness of a bog. Dodging Hawks as they swoop towards your head. Cliffs that anyone would start tilting towards, and you're standing there. Puffins that look at you with one eye and then they turn their head and they look at you with the other eye, and that was one brain and one eye and the other eye and the other brain. Thank you. I am intending you forward into your life exclamation point.
Hi Ruth, glad you enjoyed Foula. I stayed there twice in 2006 and 2008 at Ristie, both times I had fantastic weather and great interaction with the locals, sadly some of whom are no longer with us. I few around the isle, sailed around the isle and walked all the hills and coastline, had a fantastic time time there.
Hi Ruth, I lived in Shetland of over 7 years and it has a place in my heart for sure. I've heard born and bred Shetlanders use both Ler-wick and Leh-rick in conversation. I think it just depends on what part of Shetland the individual is from. I've had quite a few encounters with Bonxies on Hermaness, on Unst. They're quite intimidating, aren't they. Another scary bird is the Artic Tern, known as the Tirrick in Shetland. They're very much smaller than the Bonxie, but with a fearsome, sword-like bill. They nest at the top of beaches, on the ground, and attack in squadrons of many and from all directions if you're unlucky enough to wander too close to their nests. They can easily draw blood with their bills, but they also target you with nasty smelling poo too!! I never managed to get over to Foula, sadly, but hope to one day. I have been lucky enough to visit the island of Mousa and its broch, which is the most complete and best-preserved broch in Scotland.
I visited Scotland in April of '23. I truly loved the place. My wife has no desire to leave the country, so my daughters, son in law and granddaughter were my companions. My youngest daughter and I would love to do a trip of the Scottish isles. My Nordic and Scottish blood are begging to visit places such as this. Thanks for a preview!
I visited Foula during the summer of 1980 & again the following year, 1981 to do intertidal studies of the flora & fauna. Each time I went with Brathay Exploration Group & stayed in Ristie which at that time was much more basic than clearly it is now. The island made a lasting impression on me in terms of it's sheer beauty, the cliffs, the variety of its rocky & its boulder beaches. Does the Gaarda Stack still haves its arch? I am glad to see Sheila Gear looking so hale & hearty.
Shetland and Orkney are both on our bucket list. We visit Scotland every year and Mull has just become our favourite island, closely followed by Lunga with all it's wonderful puffins!

Another great video, Ruth. You can't make vicarious seem any more real. The maps and drone views are very helpful. It's amazing that with just 35 residents they can maintain their own water and power infrastructure. The discussion with Sheila was fascinating. It brought vividly to mind what living in that harsh climate without electricity and running water was like. Your attempt at a shortcut back to your lodgings from Da Sneck O' D Smaallie was harrowing. You are a consummate videographer and storyteller. Thanks so much for bringing us all along on your adventures.
Title reminds me of the great Irish film the field when the bull McCabe is heading to the cliffs with the cattle and taoghe says where you going Da and he answers to the edge of the world.
Ruth, you asked for recommendations for rainwear that would withstand the Scottish climate. Last year I went to Alaska and it rains there a lot and fiercely. So I researched Goretex rainwear and bought a hooded raincoat. There are different companies who sell Goretex. I always wondered if it was worth the price. There are several types to choose from depending on your preferences. I decided after being drenched with regular rain gear I would give it a try. What a revelation! It rained everyday I was in Alaska and I was a comfortable as can be. Not only that but I found some trail shoes that are also Goretex, so no more wet socks and chilly feet. It is well worth every cent!

Enjoyable video Ruth. Have you seen the 1937 movie by Powell and Pressburger called The Edge of the World ? It’s about the final evacuation of the island of StKilda. They were not allowed to film on that island so they chose Foula as their location. The cast and crew had to stay there for months, building their own accommodation, and suffering from similar conditions that you did. I think you would enjoy the film very much as it shows the raw natural beauty of Foula.
Another lovely video. The accomodation is way less anxiety causing than the bothy's or creepy caves. Glad you got a hearty meal after that rainy windy hike.

What an amazing place and an excellent video Ruth! The puffins are the cutest birds!!! Your meal looked absolutely delicious! Thanks for sharing this with us! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
As far as great rain-gear, I had good luck with a brand called Frog Togs --- they not only shed rain really well, but they're breathable. Let water vapor out while keeping the rain away. Are very light-weight and easy to stow!
Ha, I can see Foula on a clear day from my House and Croft . We’ve not visited Foula yet, but certainly will do. We are lucky here as we also have Puffins on the cliffs at the side of our place, I love kayaking out to the edge of the Voe and watch them diving for sand eels. Shetland is a magical place, we love it here. Let us know if you are passing this way again, we have a spot you can use for the camper next to the beach. Love your videos. 👍👍❤️
We went to Shetland a month ago and I watched your Shetland video before we went. I loved it so much and you really helped us when deciding where to go and what to do in just a week. Since then I’ve been working my way through all your videos. They are super. You are a breath of fresh air. I was delighted to see this latest video on another Shetland video! What a treat!! 😁
@@ruthaisling we took your advise and stayed up on Unst for 2 nights and camped at the Gardiesfauld Youth Hostel right by the shore. We had really good weather and saw Muckle Flugga lighthouse in beautiful sunshine. We saw so many puffins! Another highlight was St Ninion’s tombolo. Again we had beautiful sunshine and I had a swim there. Thank you so much for the recommendation. Like you though, we found a week was just not enough and we are desperate to go back and explore more! I’m just loving your videos! ♥️

G'day wee lassie. Beautiful face, gorgeous accent. Excellent video. The Puffins look so cute, their coloured beaks quite spectacular. My Scottish ancestors make me proud. Scotland is so wonderful to see. Douglas from Down Under. ps You need to buy a good quality sailing top & pants, used by sailors in bad weather.
The aeroplane that you flew on is an Islander. It's a very reliable aircraft for going in and out of short, difficult runways in windy conditions. I flew one from Land's End to the Scillies for a couple of years in all sorts of weather and thought it was a great plane to operate.
I could stay for many weeks, it looks amazing there. Seeing the ponies and all of the Puffin. I found the rangers book on Thriftbooks , looking forward to reading it. Glad you enjoyed the puffins! They’re my favourite. And yes, the sleep mask is the best 👍
Excellent. Wow such stunning quiet beautiful place.
Thank you.
It really is!
Awesome terrain and views. Once again, thank you for sharing your adventure with us all.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video as always
Being disabled with mobility issues you take me with you and am happy Ruth
Safe travels 😊
Thank you so much for watching!!
New viewer here from The Philippines and enjoying your adventures! Can't wait to view the rest of your videos.
That was an excellent video Ruth, lot more informative than Steve Marsh video on the same island.
Good to see you over 100 thousand
Steve did 24hr with a wild camp overnight, with a view to coming back for a longer period.
Have been fortunate to spend several weeks on Foula birdwatching in the autumn, staying at Ristie. This video brought back many memories. Thank you.
Wow amazing! ❤️
Wow Ruth, you do Scotland proud, showcasing it's people, the history and beauty of it's remote wilderness and shores.
You present all the beautiful and little known parts that the ' tourists' could never find 😂
Your Tai meal looked amazing and so did you , but not a mention or a wee dram for dessert 😁Safe travels , look forward to your next adventure 👍x
Wow, thank you!
What an amazing place and an excellent video Ruth! The puffins are the cutest birds!!!
Your meal looked absolutely delicious!
Thanks for sharing this with us! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks so much! 😊
As far as great rain-gear, I had good luck with a brand called Frog Togs --- they not only shed rain really well, but they're breathable. Let water vapor out while keeping the rain away. Are very light-weight and easy to stow!
Thanks for the suggestion! I’ll check that brand out!
Wow that sounds amazing! Thanks so much Adrian. I hope you can visit Foula sometime!
Ahhh ive got to take my mom to that island! She had a Shetland pony as a young girl and still loves them lol.
You are a trooper Ruth going through all kinds of weather conditions to get to your destination! It was good to go along with you. Thank you.
Thanks Betty! ❤️
That’s brilliant to hear, so glad the Shetland video was helpful for your trip. What was your highlight on Shetland?
@@ruthaisling we took your advise and stayed up on Unst for 2 nights and camped at the Gardiesfauld Youth Hostel right by the shore. We had really good weather and saw Muckle Flugga lighthouse in beautiful sunshine. We saw so many puffins! Another highlight was St Ninion’s tombolo. Again we had beautiful sunshine and I had a swim there. Thank you so much for the recommendation. Like you though, we found a week was just not enough and we are desperate to go back and explore more! I’m just loving your videos! ♥️
Another brilliant video Ruth we do live in a beautiful country thank you for sharing 😁x
The puffins certainly made up for the other birds
What an amazing place certainly very remote
Thanks for posting
Ruth! What beautiful Shetland Ponies; such a paradise; I appreciate your fabulous videos!! You're so creative and a gifted videographer!! Blessings
Thank you so much! 🙏
love the accommodation
This channel is so underrated for its great content. I love you Ruth❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Wow! So small an island yet so much to see! I could stay a week or two -- as long as I had food delivered!!! Sorry that the weather reduced your ability to get up those highest peaks -- but better safe than sorry!!! Thank you for taking us along!!!
I think you might be able to order food from the supermarket on the main island!
@@ruthaisling -- OK -- I have now added the guest house as one of my possible places to retire!!! 😁
My biking rain gear came from Shower Pass. I’m bringing them in Oct when I come to the UK. I can’t wait to experience Scotland and England.
Great Video Ruth.
Thanks for sharing about your gear, I’ll check that brand out!
Thanks Ruth. You not only take us to less complicated places but less complicated times. My ancestors are from Aberdeenshire and I try to get back every few years.
Appreciate you watching the videos, thank you! ❤️
Such a remarkable place. Thanks for showing it to us!
It really is a special place! Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for watching 🙏
Thank you for another great video Ruth. You take us to places that the majority of people would never have seen. Thanks again Ruth😀
Your videos are so relaxing to watch, I find them so good to wind down to thanks
Glad you like them!
Another brave adventure, Ruth! I love the ponies and the puffins. Take care always
They are so cute! I love them too! 😍
All your videos are superb Ruth. Many thanks.
Your videos addictive looking forward to the next upload. I particularly love the accommodations you show us and the yummy meals and drinks
More coming soon! I’m pleased you’re enjoying them. Thank you 🙏
Liebchen... 💌 such nice videos, I admire your independent spirit and excellent production quality, not to mention that I enjoy watching and listening to you. You improve my day! Thank you!
Thanks for taking us along. Had a wee dram while I watched and what a watch. A stunning unspoilt place and added to my list! Keep doing what you are as really good mix of info and love your passion for Scotland 🏴
Hope you enjoyed your dram! Thanks for watching!
Love how clean your accommodation was, very tidy and clean and stocked up with essentials. Very professional 😇
Yes! Thank you!
Puffins, winds, rain, cliffs, ponies and more. Sounds like a great place to visit. Maybe not in winter though. :)
It was amazing 🤩
G'day wee lassie. Beautiful face, gorgeous accent. Excellent video. The Puffins look so cute, their coloured beaks quite spectacular. My Scottish ancestors make me proud. Scotland is so wonderful to see. Douglas from Down Under.
ps You need to buy a good quality sailing top & pants, used by sailors in bad weather.
Thanks so much 😊
Your next visit should be to the Faroe Islands😃
The aeroplane that you flew on is an Islander. It's a very reliable aircraft for going in and out of short, difficult runways in windy conditions. I flew one from Land's End to the Scillies for a couple of years in all sorts of weather and thought it was a great plane to operate.
Oh that’s interesting they use it there too!
All the best elements of an Aisling production are here, and even an interview, for the second week in a row! Great.
Glad you enjoyed the interviews. I always feel nervous to ask people, but trying to do it more as it makes the videos better (hopefully)!
you do take some awesome trips and close by there is so much to see in your area thank you for opening our eyes to the area and the beauty
Thanks David, there is still so much to see!
I could stay for many weeks, it looks amazing there. Seeing the ponies and all of the Puffin. I found the rangers book on Thriftbooks , looking forward to reading it. I look forward to seeing your videos each week, always a fun adventure! It's nice to know there are places left that are not over crowded, very peaceful.
Hope you enjoy the book. I’m looking forward to reading it too!
