Really clean and nice looking boat. Ruth said it built recently, but was that when it was retrofit? I saw the bow thruster on the panel That would certainly help with docking and pushing off if there is not a lot of room along the canal wall.
Hi Ruth! As I live on a narrowboat I’d like to clarify a few points from your excellent vlog: Narrowboats are 6 feet 10 inches wide, any canal boat wider than this is a widebeam (which you stayed on). They sail under their own propulsion (a Diesel engine or more recently an electric motor). A houseboat is static and has no propulsion. The bow-thruster you mentioned is an electric powered propeller in the bow of the boat to help with steering (nice to have as canal boats have a mind of their own in strong winds!) On the English waterways widebeams are restricted predominantly to the Grand Union and the Kennet & Avon canals where the waterways are wide enough to allow widebeam boats to pass each other and for one to fit in the locks (or two narrowboats side by side). They are not cold in winter as someone mentioned. Just like a normal house, they’re cold if you don’t heat it but if you do they’re toasty warm. Grey water is indeed pumped into the canal but there’s a lot worse in our waterways courtesy of the water companies…. Black water (toilet) either goes into a holding tank and is pumped out periodically or you have a chemical toilet which you empty at an ‘elsan’ point every few days. Anyone who would like to know more about the canal boats and network in the UK, there are many UA-cam channels but I’d recommend ‘Cruising the Cut’. Hope that helps clears up a few things.

I loooved the houseboat !!! I could easily live there. You're in a city with all the conveniences, but when you go home, you basically separate yourself from all the insanity and crawl down into you cozy cubby hole .Best of both worlds .

Log burning stove is what we call a wood burning stove…they’re pretty illegal in CA (USA)…cause they are fairly toxic on air pollution. But my sister has one in Wyoming and it is so warm and cozy.

I love this! I could live on this charming boat permanently. It's cozy and roomy, just perfect. Also, it's beautifully appointed, tasteful with beautifully done bathrooms. Outstanding! That was just awesome! This Canal Boat was very charming & so cozy! I loved it! And docked in Glasgow no less! Who knew? LOL. Also, there was so much room inside the boat! I would never have guessed that it could be so spacious in there. Also, all the amenities that it had on board as well.Even a wood burning stove! Amazing! I would love to live on one of those cute boats now. That would be very cool & a real adventure. Everything about this boat was totally unique! What a lovely houseboat! (A tip from someone who loves to cook and has stayed in many Airbnbs: a baking sheet works well as a skillet cover in a pinch!)
Bourbon (we pronounce it like burr-bin), is a whiskey made from corn and aged a minimum of 2 yrs, unlike its cousin scotch made from barley and aged a minimum of 3 years Something interesting we learned during our speyside distillery tours is that a lot of scotch distilleries us Ex-bourbon barrels (which are whisky casks which have been previously used to mature American Bourbon.)
Just a quick clarification on bourbon. It has to be at least 51% corn, but doesn't have to be corn exclusively. Most bourbons have a secondary component of rye or wheat, and typically a small percentage of barley as well. Some bourbons include all four grains. It actually doesn't have to be aged for two years unless it's to be called "straight" bourbon. It can only be made in the USA, and it must be aged in new charred American oak barrels. As someone pointed out, most of those barrels get a second life in Scotland and elsewhere. Many of my favorite scotches are matured in ex-bourbon barrels. All that said, I love the canal boat and could see myself living in one.

Well Ruth that’s a change from a campervan!! We have been on a holiday in England travelling to Wales and back, it was a narrow boat. Yours is so spacious by comparison, very nicely fitted out, all the mod cons!! Hi Ruth, when i was between 7 and 12 me, my four sisters and my parents went to England (I think) and my family made a holiday trip with such a boat through locks and canals. It is one of the most precious memories from my childhood,
I remember from back in 1971, stationed in Iwakuni Japan. We bought a couple of 2 liter bottles of Ashli and some bottle rockets to celebrate July 4th. We sat up on a hill above town near a 900 year old castle shooting bottle rockets up toward town. By the end of the evening, the bottles of beer had quite the deposit of gunpowder from the rockets. We had gunpowder mustaches when we headed back to the Marine Base.
I've watched several TV series of people maneuvering their boats through the narrow British canals for weeks and weeks, very entertaining, and it took me a while to realize, Ruth isn't going anywhere! That's a fantastic boat compared to the ones I saw on TV.

Truly that is fantastic, we have spent many a holiday on a canal boat in Amsterdam, Paris( right below the Eiffel and in Bruges! Then we dared to go barging on the canal midi. That was magical!
I spent a wonderful Aug & Sept of 2000 at the National Piping Centre just across the motorway at the top of Hope St. Speirs Wharf at that time was derelict, disreputable, and more than a bit creepy. Even so, I had a lovely afternoon walk along the towpath as far as the Partick Thistle stadium, then down through the University and back via the subway. Not only was the Glaswegian accent unpenetratable to my American ears, but I found quite a number of folk speaking Scots, which for me was even worse! It's so nice to see how the area has been cleaned up and rejunvenated. Since then I see they've also completely rebuilt the Stockingfield Junction, where the Monkland Canal - of which Speirs Wharf is the current terminus - meets the Forth & Clyde, with new foot bridges in all directions. Thanks for the beautiful and informative video. I love your cozy canal boat.
Thanks for watching Eric, it sounds like you had a lovely trip to Glasgow back in 2000. There are some areas of Glasgow which do still feel a bit run down, but it's nice to see how nice Speirs Wharf is now.
What a tremendously good and informative video. The bathrooms looked better than in a decent hotel and in fact the facilities on the boat in general looked excellent. And having a washing machine - how fortunate! No wonder you enjoyed your stay there.
I enjoyed your video, but this Air B&B is not very typical of narrow boats I know. The clue is in the name: Narrow Boat. You were enjoying a moored wide beam boat which although it offers more living space would be a real challenge to navigate the canal system and would not fit into many locks, so your travel scope would be limited. Maintaining a narrow boat requires daily application to various tasks and the winter months can see canal closures. Narrow boats are great, but lets keep it real! Thanks.
This is a widebeam boat, it is designed for living on and has its own mooring with electricity. There are hundreds of variations boats to live on, modern ones like this might cost £180K, and more, my twenty year old narrowboat would be about £60k,
Lovely video again - you are so right that canal boats and many of their fittings are just like campervans - we love them both. Note that this was a wide beam boat (~14 feet wide) - if you really want to feel like you're in a floating campervan you need to try a narrowboat (~7 feet wide, so really like living in a long thin van)

the Bow (pronounced baw) thruster named after the front of the boat ,the bow, is a propeller that runs across the bottom of the boat to let you dock more easily as it pushes the front of the boat sideways , best wishes Darren x
You would hear a lot of banging if they didn’t have the blue ball in between the boat and the dock. They use those to prevent you from having that loud banging sound so you hear the creaking instead. The canal from what I have seen is usually very still unless you have a storm. I follow someone who travels with her boat and she lives in it too but it’s a bit more eco friendly. That boat looks real nice. I would live there full time if I could lol

I love canals and barges, we used to holiday on the canals sometimes when i was growing up, that and the norfolk broads (and camping), my cousin now lives on a boat and last we spoke he was watching moor hen chicks and hoping they survived the big fish lurking below (think he said they were pike) This boat is rather lovely, and it's so spacious.
What a lovely wide beam narrowboat as we say in the midlands. I'm a narrowboat enthusiast. Seems very well equipped. Would you have been allowed to cruise in it, or is it just stationary for visitors. 💚
My oldest sister lived on a houseboat for a while, but they encountered maintenance issues you don't have with regular housing. Then they travelled in their RV to sell Native American jewelery at powwows. They're living conventionally now. I guess you couldn't get to the highlands in a canal boat? I think you have floor space in your living area for a full set to dance with. The challenge is to keep your formations tight or you rock the boat! :)
We stayed in a log cabin near Algonquin Provincial Park in Ontario in the spring of 2023, and next to hiking in the Park, the woodstove was the highlight.
Fantastic video Ruth and something really different. When you see how the designers have utilised a limited space it makes you realise how poorly space is used in the average bricks and mortar house.
Use another pot for a lid if it is similar diameter, or bunch everything into a smaller pile in frying pan and cover. Also, when showering in mobile home or canal boat, have a military shower, wet yourself and cloth or sponge, water off, soap up and scrub, rinse off. A major difference in water usage! You probably already do, as you seem the type of adventurous person who would already know this. Many thanks for the review, never thought it would be so confortable inside a canal boat. Was goping to buy one here in London years ago, I am re-thinking now. Cheers!

You can't beat a fire with flames, I could almost feel the heat from the log burner. The boat was moored next to what was a whiskey storage warehouse, now converted to flats. in fact the area had a few distilleries locally. Look forward to the next video.

Bourbon (we pronounce it like burr-bin), is a whiskey made from corn and aged a minimum of 2 yrs, unlike its cousin scotch made from barley and aged a minimum of 3 years Something interesting we learned during our speyside distillery tours is that a lot of scotch distilleries us Ex-bourbon barrels (which are whisky casks which have been previously used to mature American Bourbon.)

Bourbon to be bourbon also had to be aged in oak barrels.
Just a quick clarification on bourbon. It has to be at least 51% corn, but doesn't have to be corn exclusively. Most bourbons have a secondary component of rye or wheat, and typically a small percentage of barley as well. Some bourbons include all four grains. It actually doesn't have to be aged for two years unless it's to be called "straight" bourbon. It can only be made in the USA, and it must be aged in new charred American oak barrels. As someone pointed out, most of those barrels get a second life in Scotland and elsewhere. Many of my favorite scotches are matured in ex-bourbon barrels. All that said, I love the canal boat and could see myself living in one.

Well Ruth that’s a change from a campervan!! We have been on a holiday in England travelling to Wales and back, it was a narrow boat. Yours is so spacious by comparison, very nicely fitted out, all the mod cons!! I remember from back in 1971, stationed in Iwakuni Japan. We bought a couple of 2 liter bottles of Ashli and some bottle rockets to celebrate July 4th. We sat up on a hill above town near a 900 year old castle shooting bottle rockets up toward town. By the end of the evening, the bottles of beer had quite the deposit of gunpowder from the rockets. We had gunpowder mustaches when we headed back to the Marine Base.

I've watched several TV series of people maneuvering their boats through the narrow British canals for weeks and weeks, very entertaining, and it took me a while to realize, Ruth isn't going anywhere! That's a fantastic boat compared to the ones I saw on TV.

Truly that is fantastic, we have spent many a holiday on a canal boat in Amsterdam, Paris( right below the Eiffel and in Bruges! Then we dared to go barging on the canal midi. That was magical!

I spent a wonderful Aug & Sept of 2000 at the National Piping Centre just across the motorway at the top of Hope St. Speirs Wharf at that time was derelict, disreputable, and more than a bit creepy. Even so, I had a lovely afternoon walk along the towpath as far as the Partick Thistle stadium, then down through the University and back via the subway. Not only was the Glaswegian accent unpenetratable to my American ears, but I found quite a number of folk speaking Scots, which for me was even worse! It's so nice to see how the area has been cleaned up and rejunvenated. Since then I see they've also completely rebuilt the Stockingfield Junction, where the Monkland Canal - of which Speirs Wharf is the current terminus - meets the Forth & Clyde, with new foot bridges in all directions. Thanks for the beautiful and informative video. I love your cozy canal boat.

I enjoyed your video, but this Air B&B is not very typical of narrow boats I know. The clue is in the name: Narrow Boat. You were enjoying a moored wide beam boat which although it offers more living space would be a real challenge to navigate the canal system and would not fit into many locks, so your travel scope would be limited. Maintaining a narrow boat requires daily application to various tasks and the winter months can see canal closures. Narrow boats are great, but lets keep it real! Thanks.
The canals of UK are either wide or narrow, the Forth and Clyde is wide, very comfy to live on these.
This is a widebeam boat, it is designed for living on and has its own mooring with electricity. There are hundreds of variations boats to live on, modern ones like this might cost £180K, and more, my twenty year old narrowboat would be about £60k,
Lovely video again - you are so right that canal boats and many of their fittings are just like campervans - we love them both. Note that this was a wide beam boat (~14 feet wide) - if you really want to feel like you're in a floating campervan you need to try a narrowboat (~7 feet wide, so really like living in a long thin van)

the Bow (pronounced baw) thruster named after the front of the boat ,the bow, is a propeller that runs across the bottom of the boat to let you dock more easily as it pushes the front of the boat sideways , best wishes Darren x

You would hear a lot of banging if they didn’t have the blue ball in between the boat and the dock. They use those to prevent you from having that loud banging sound so you hear the creaking instead. The canal from what I have seen is usually very still unless you have a storm. I follow someone who travels with her boat and she lives in it too but it’s a bit more eco friendly. That boat looks real nice. I would live there full time if I could lol

I love canals and barges, we used to holiday on the canals sometimes when i was growing up, that and the norfolk broads (and camping), my cousin now lives on a boat and last we spoke he was watching moor hen chicks and hoping they survived the big fish lurking below (think he said they were pike)

My oldest sister lived on a houseboat for a while, but they encountered maintenance issues you don't have with regular housing. Then they travelled in their RV to sell Native American jewelery at powwows. They're living conventionally now. I guess you couldn't get to the highlands in a canal boat? I think you have floor space in your living area for a full set to dance with. The challenge is to keep your formations tight or you rock the boat! :)
I thik there used to be some canals in the Highlands but they filled them in. The canal network in Scotland is quite small compared to England

We stayed in a log cabin near Algonquin Provincial Park in Ontario in the spring of 2023, and next to hiking in the Park, the woodstove was the highlight.

Use another pot for a lid if it is similar diameter, or bunch everything into a smaller pile in frying pan and cover. Also, when showering in mobile home or canal boat, have a military shower, wet yourself and cloth or sponge, water off, soap up and scrub, rinse off. A major difference in water usage! You probably already do, as you seem the type of adventurous person who would already know this. Many thanks for the review, never thought it would be so confortable inside a canal boat. Was goping to buy one here in London years ago, I am re-thinking now. Cheers!

Hi Ruth, glad you enjoyed your time in my home toon of Glesca, the boat looked great, obviously a wider boat than some canal boats. You can't beat a fire with flames, I could almost feel the heat from the log burner. The boat was moored next to what was a whiskey storage warehouse, now converted to flats. in fact the area had a few distilleries locally. Look forward to the next video.
I've seen new firefighters try that with a fire flap. 🤣 They learned sorta quickly that the fire was spreading and getting bigger. 😁 How would you hold the flames in your hands to beat the other fire with? I just realized what you wrote. duh. 🙄
