      I joined a Vrchat meetup server yesterday and then I found aspiring porn director, an ERPer, giant skeleton monster that we said was thrillseeker, a gang of bill ciphers and gang of ninjas, and then we made fanfic of daddy thwillseewker. It's a bit too immersive even without the haptics if you ask me lol

  • @melomaniakjm
    @melomaniakjm 4 роки тому +2

    Best thing for immersion is the biggest play area you can "afford". I play Alyx in a room with 7mx6m and I mostly walk, teleport once in a while only. When I reach the guardian zone on the Quest I snap turn and continue walking. Nothing beats physically walking in the environment. And also wireless is for me the only way to go, cable breaks the immersion.

  • @MrJagermeister

    I kickstarted the Woojer haptic Vest and that thing is amazing. It does 7.1 sound from 8 vibration locations (4 front, 4 back - upper and lower torso) and I wear it all the time when watching movies and intense shows at home, as well as gaming and listening to music. Sort of like standing towards the stage and the front speakers at a concert, being able to *feel* the music enhances it SO much, and it’s the same with shows and movies. Especially since I don’t live in a house where I can blast my surround sound system anymore, I can still crank up the haptics to 11 at 3am and not bother a soul. I truly believe it’s going to be big for the future of gaming. Also, you must be hot wearing a mask while playing VR haha.

    • @penn2093
      @penn2093 4 роки тому +34

      There's a reason for that. Early CRTs where unhealthy to sit close to due to radiation. Later CRTs and all LCDs don't have that problem. The reason VR headsets are so bulky is because they need properly spaced lenses to distort the stereo images rather than just putting your eyes up to a flat screen.
      Yes I know it was a joke but I know some people legitimately believe VR will make you go blind because of the screens being too close.

    • @ThisKory
      @ThisKory 4 роки тому +7

      @@penn2093 Exactly. What becomes the issue though is the constant focal distance. This won't cause you to go blind, but can be damaging because your eyes are not focusing at any other focal range for long periods of time. However, this is still not different than staring at your computer monitor for hours at a time. So really, it's comparable to watching TV or staring at a computer monitor.

    Basically, precision is not that important. The fact that your body gets physically stimulated at all is already 80% of the experience. Same with resolution and FOV: Even though there are differences, head-tracked stereo vision at realistic geometry is already the most important part (having high enough resolution to be able to read text is useful feature though).
    Out of the 5 senses, vision sound, touch, smell and taste, taste is the only one that is not present at all times and can be ignored due to being so situational. The rest are very relevant for immersion. So far only vision and sound have been mainstream, and touch is evolving. (body presence that VR gives would kind of belong to touch category too)
    However, similarly how touch has been previously disregarded, the importance of smell shouldn't be underestimated either. I think that people are very unconscious about smell since they rely on other senses so much, but if you imagine yourself being put in different locations blindfolded, or your fiance changing their perfume, you would notice sense of smell becoming more important. The musty smell of a basement in Half Life Alyx or smell of fresh rain in a forest would surely make huge difference in immersion compared to the stale same-old smell in your room.
    Actually, that makes me think of a few other things: wind and temperature. The most important difference here would be the distinction between indoors and outdoors. At its simplest, a single fan in the corner of the room might be able to sufficiently simulate the change between indoors/outdoors, since a fan also cools you down a bit.

    I saw a comment about a VR Treadmill here, and it got me thinking why is there not a feet tracking mat of some sort? I loved my wii fit scale. Yoga with that was killer. Also just the running in place with the motion controllers was really good. Currently I am using a set of interlocking foam playmats to create a 4' by 4' space that works really good as a prox mat inside my 8' by 8' guardian. I would love if my mat tracked my feet for running in place and other fitness aplications. I just see this as so possible, and wonder what the barrier is?

    You’ve said before that the VR community’s size and passion surprises you. I think that’s because there is also a dormant aspect to the VR community: where people like me have been passively waiting for VR to go full-throttle. This is my first ever comment about VR despite being passionate about it since Facebook first sponsored oculus. Even my sister, who denounces video games, is already losing her patience from her passive excitement of the progression of VR. The community is a lot bigger, we’re just waiting for that definite big public breakthrough.

      It happens with everything. I remember when I watched minecraft mods for the first time - I was mind blown. I never got to play minecraft as a kid, so I borrowed the handbooks from friends and memorized recipes. Now when I play vanilla minecraft, it felt washed out and mundane. But then again... it is being updated again.
      Anyways, to the point, its natural to find something new exciting. I dont think it will ever become 'mundane' per say, but we definently will get used to it to a degree as we become familiar with the devices. I mean, theres alot of technology oriented 25-35 ish year olds who must have felt that way about computers, and they still get excited by new graphical technologies.
      But for us, aince we were raised with whatever they grew up with, we won't truly grasp the world of difference that device makes. So maybe one generations computer is anothers virtual reality is anothers SAO nerve gear.
      Whew, long tangent. Oh random thought, what are VR esports gonna look like? That shit is gonna be sick.

    Totaly on your side! I invested into bhaptics too (thanks the ready player one hye, ghihi) and damn it! I played so much with it, even if its not supported it feels much more imersive. Playing even beatsaber now without it, makes me miss like the half of the expierience. Feeling the beat even further, gunshots, getting hit or just standing on a earthquake.... but as u said, its not easy to get other peoples hands on it. Even if they try and enjoy, sadly lots of my friends have glasses and problems with vr or dont want to invest in extra lenses for it :(

    The part where you mentioned a force-feedback replacement cover, made me realize including vibration in just the headset (along with the controllers as normal), would be a big step in increasing immersion without requiring the user to buy any accessories. And since it would be included in all headsets, there would be more incentive for games to support it too.

Touching things in mid air (uses sub sonic ultra sound waves) A lot more subtle than vests but I think will be incredibly helpful especially with controller-less hand tracking. So compelling that Leap Motion bought it out and rebranded it UltraLeap. Makes perfect sense

    Wait what about haptic gloves? Also if I may, all you need to add a full avatar would be straps for the elbows and knees considering the rest of the body is already measured/still standing. It would add a whole new layer. I also wonder how laying down on grass, the feeling of a light breeze or a splash of water. Would those be possible?
