Girl signs Christmas concert for deaf parents

- A 5-year-old became an Internet sensation overnight for doing what she says is "easy for her." Claire Koch used sign language during her Christmas pageant to share what she was singing with her deaf parents.
Geez. Shes an angel! They raised her right. Meaning they taught her empathy. She takes others into consideration
Yes, couldn't agree more with you!
Very true. This is true success as a parent.
Yes, I'm happy to see they have taught her sign language and connected with her. My half-sister's mum grew up with deaf parents but she never learnt sign language or properly connected with her parents. She grew up to be very cold and distant, and now it has traumatized her daughter. Makes me really sad.
This fuss is so problematic. A lot of Othering ways people think about disabilities and sensory impairments coming out. Why are we embarassing a kid for wanting her parents to understand her!? That's perfectly normal. And why is she singled out as cute, other hearing children of deaf parents of all backgrounds face the same "dillemma" over judging the context whether to be a loyal kid or avoid standing out, the potential social consequences. All the fuss is stomping on her, cringey and even creepy if you ask me, and she's clearly over it. Rightly so.
@@kathybramley5609 oh my god, you’re problematic. This video is cute, go be depressing somewhere else. Way to suck the joy out of people.
This SHOULD BE A SUBJECT in school! No different than Reading and English Lit!!! Brava young lady!
My niece had ASL in HS. As her Language Requirement.
Should be offered instead of foreign languages the first step should always be understand your first language thoroughly then go on to others
In NZ it is. My nephew can sign some from learning it in school. He's not fluent though.
@@petitcactusamer No other languages are more important than ASL. It sucks that most Americans know only English, kinda sad.
Asl in hs
Isn't the brain of a young child incredible? At 5 years old, she easily can do something an adult would spend hundreds upon hundreds of hours to learn and perfect. Just look into it, it's almost overwhelming because it's so different. But to that young brain? It's just another thing
She acquired sign the way anyone would learn their first language. "Learn" actually is the wrong word. We all acquire out first language whether it's English, Spanish, Mandarin, sign, whatever.
My cousin comes from a predominantly French family, but they do also speak English especially around me and my dad since we don't speak French. When he was Three years old if someone said something in French around us he would turn around and repeat it in English for me and my dad. He was our own personal translator.
That's because ASL is her first language! Children can start learning sign language at just a few months old, while other children don't learn to speak until around one or two years old. I'm taking ASL highschool.
Jsh Shh actually kids are able to learn languages faster then adults. Since kids' brains are developing, they learn more things
Both her parents are deaf. She's propably signed ASL since crawling age (as hand movements are easier to control than mouth/throat muscles).
Both, deaf and hearing kids of deaf parents usually have good repertuoire of everyday (signed) vocabulary around the time they learn to walk.
While neither of us is deaf, my wife and I taught our baby girl sign language. Well before she could speak, she could sign if she was hungry, thirsty needed a diaper change, etc.. It really helped a lot. Children have the ability to learn and use signs well before they can speak.
Mike Cervi baby sign language is actually recommended...so little ones that are able to speak (age, mute, etc) can tell their folks what's wrong (pain, hot, cold, hunger, etc)
Babies can begin communicating as early as 3 months rather than waiting for their vocal cords to develop
Mike Cervi I didn't know that. That's good advice
Can you please tell me how did you taught the baby to sign language? I'd like to do the same for my kids in the future. But I have no idea where to begin with
Same here. I taught my son to sign and it really helped him communicate from a shockingly young age.
She is a beautiful child
Saira Ramjit yes inside and out
Saira Ramjit wow! Those likes!
Why in particular though!? I don't get it. Except internalised racism. It's kind of creepy too. All children are beautiful. All children of deaf parents are beautiful. The fuss is not doing her any good.
Why is everyone so busy losing their minds about this instead of respecting the needs of disabled families and of this little girl. Would you enjoy being made such a big fuss of? Would it make sense to you? Are you advocating for inclusion and accessibility and doing work towards if you can? Or are you just abusively embarassing a kid for wanting her family to understand what she's saying!? Which is perfectly normal!
@@kathybramley5609 Jesus Christ, you have fuckin issues. Go seek therapy.
I worked at an ice cream shop, and one time, a teen boy and his deaf parents visited. For whatever reason, they started to fight and it was, I suppose, the deaf version of a “screaming” match. The kid tried to intervene, but he rolled his eyes and told me, “just because they’re deaf doesn’t mean they don’t ‘scream’ at each other.’” He laughed and it took the edge off and he signed for them to stop it, pick out flavors, and move on. Nice when kids have a sense of humor about it.
Signing so fast and aggressive they looked like they were naruto characters 😂
@@sherk3286 aye yo you foul for that lol
I love how the other little kids don't even think it's weird. So cute.
Since the teacher spent time teaching the children cutesy hand motions anyway, just imagine how amazing it would have been to have all the children sign along instead!
@@MeAVE243 it is hard enough teaching them all the words to songs; perhaps teaching them sign language in school anyway would be nice for their classmate and useful for future encounters.
Children are sponges and absorb information super quickly. Assuming they won’t be able to understand is why a lot of children miss out on learning multiple languages and advanced skills. It’s much harder to learn things as an adult.
My Uncle Dicky was deaf. He never married. We lived far away from each other. He came to visit us 3 times and we visited him twice in my lifetime. I learned sign language from a deaf friend who didn't have many friends. The second time he came to visit us, I signed to him and he was elated! I had 2 more visits with him before he died. It was just basic stuff, however, I know I touched his heart to take the time to learn it. It was our own secret language! I can still see his smile!
This made me sad but happy sad
That's such a beautiful story and I'm sure you made your uncle's day when he visited.
That is so beautiful, Margaret!
❤️
Thank you for sharing. The bond you had with your uncle was so beautiful
I had neighbors once who are blind and have two little kids. The dad always took them on walks around the neighborhood. The oldest little girl (maybe 6 or 7) always stopped her bicycle in front of her dad whenever she saw a car. I'm sure he could hear it, but you could tell she was protective of him. When they came to my door on Halloween, she was telling him when there was a step, etc. He never walks with a cane in the neighborhood bc he doesn't have to.. she sees the obstacles and tells him. They make an amazing team ❤
That’s so cutе 💜
I’m sure he’s also memorized where things are, at what angles and how many steps between. Not to mention, like you said, when one sense is taken away, the others are magnified.
the cutest part "yeah its kinda easy"
Christy H lol
Sign language stimulates the same part of the brain speaking does so she basically speaking 2 languages
In should be taught in all schools
tracy 511 I mean in America there are plenty other people who don't have the ability to speak English doesn't mean Spanish, Bangladeshi, Hindi, Urdu, manderin, Vietnamese etc should be forced in the curriculum.
But I do think the state's need to up their language program and offer other languages besides French and German that do.t even have strong populations in us
Yes! Especially the US, where we don't even require a second language class
tracy 511 I agree
It is in some. I had sign as an option in high school
I know a kid in kindergarten who's learning sign in school. As a cashier there have been several instances where I wish I knew it.
Kids born into bilingual families are so lucky and blessed.
She truly did sing for her parents. You go pal!
Beautiful. She wants mom and dad to know what their singing. Her parents must have been very proud.
Ii
Someone in my school has deaf parents and does the same ❤️
Sweet!
That's cool
The amazing thing about sign is she must’ve been able to communicate with her parents LOOOONG before babies are able to formulate words with hearing parents.
I am so proud of the little girl signing for her parents. She is god send .

Languages are actually easy for kids to learn, between birth and 5 language skills start a you absorb the way people around you communicate. It's only as you get older that you have a harder time learning
Starmadien2019 yes. Maybe schools need a reminder of this.
@@Purplefire0796 Yes, but you typically don't start school till what 4? Maybe 5? By then they don't have much time to absorb it. That's more on the parents to teach them.
@@fidelianerina playgroup nowadays teach children second language
Me, looking for ways to help my future nieces and nephews cope with their schoolwork: write that down, write that down!
It’s actually more so HOW the children learn languages rather than ability to. When kids learn a language, they are using it daily, seeing examples, perhaps even on television or other media. When adults and older kids are trying to learn languages, they sit down in a classroom and don’t go out into the world for somebody else to show them how to casually, day by day. Those changes just make it 100x harder.
She is absolutely precious and so loving, what a blessing to the parents from God.
What a wonderful comment for all the world to see.
You are aware of GODS gifts and you are SHINING like He intended you to do. Thanks for posting such a faith filled message. It's needed in the comment sections each day.
God bless you.
Peace and a prayer too,

With the way she's grasped sign language and her compassion, she could easily become and interpreter!
Umm, ASL is her first language. She learned it just like anyone of us learns our first language. And there is NOTHING "easy" about becoming an ASL interpreter. That is a long, complicated road, and is so much more than signing and reading sign. More difficult than you can even imagine, clearly.
Whoa sorry that was from like 2 years ago. But I definitely meant it as a compliment that she’s doing great
@@ErikaGrosspietsch
Okay, so there is a limit as to when you can reply? Seriously.
@@lisahinton9682 I was just shocked how long ago that was from no biggy! It was nothing at you at all
@@lisahinton9682 why are you being so aggressive? They were giving a compliment. Just because it’s a long road doesn’t mean it’s impossible. She’s fluent in English and ASL, so she already is further along than someone who learned it in college to become an interpreter. Dont be such a buzz kill.
It's the type of lump in your throat, with tears welled up in your eyes, while smiling. God bless this little girl. She wanted them to enjoy it too. Nice!!!!
Disability shouldn't be an impediment to falling in love and raising a family
Being brought up in neglect is an impediment to those things unfortunately. Im walking evidence of that 🤙
True
It isn't.
She's a beautiful lil girl inside and out
She is such a kind hearted child😇
And her parents must be so grateful and lucky to have this beautiful child living with them
that’s so wonderful!! and such a beautiful reason why. she just wanted her parents to understand what she was saying, what a little angel!!
Very talented, big hearted little girl who involves everyone in her circle of love, God bless to both her parents for raising such a intelligent and caring little girl.
When I was teaching, we used to use sign language to help children learn and remember words. A physical sign helps children learn a language more quickly. So yes signing is taught in some English primary schools.
That little girl is the next generation of our country need more like her. A BEAUTIFUL SOUL
They should teach sign language in every school, she is so sweet and has such great parents
Sign language is universal it should be taught in every classroom on the planet that way no matter where you go you can communicate.
Little girl just wanted her deaf parents to know what she was singing. Very sweet. 😊
If this isn’t the height of HEARTLESSNESS to the 145 that disliked this innocent video, then I honestly don’t know what is. God bless this little angel and I parents. I promise she will be a STAR while growing up 👏🏽!!!
Such a lovely soul!!! This little girl is super inspiring!
What great parents and a beautiful, caring and smart daughter they raised. She is truly a little Angel. Learning sign language is not easy and to see this little sweetheart pick it up that easily is amazing. God Bless this wonderful family!!!
Her hair is spun from silk, her eyes hold diamonds, that’s why they twinkle so, her smile shines as a morning sun rise, her hands were formed by the angles, but her heart though small has the power to strengthen any soul that gets to gaze upon her.
How adorable and sweet that she would do that for deaf parents in the audience.
My son's school have a deaf and hard of hearing kindergarten class. Every holiday concert, the kids are signing. They will even teach the whole class the signs for at least one song.
What an amazing little girl🥺🥺🥺
That is so sweet. I remember when my daughter was in 2nd grade, her teachers taught the class sign language! Thank you for sharing, God bless you and her family ✝️
the silence will just kill me. they have so much will power to live
Bless her soul! Being so thoughtful at such a young age! I hope it continues onward and that students in the future do not pick on her because her parents are deaf. I love sign language and believe that everyone should at least some a little to communicate in case it’s needed!
Whenever I see people communicating through signing I become mesmerized; their language is beautiful. To me it’s like the beauty of seeing a ballet.
I swear I am not crying. My eyes sweat when I am touched. 🤗
Oh my can't get a sweeter loving little girl than this what an amazing young girl to show so much love an respect
She's a Great Kid and will be a better adult.

She is so awesome. Parents are doing a good job.
Hi there.. how are you doing? Hope you’re fine and staying safe over there?
Priceless child...
Definitely, this child has a beautiful heart..
Having a deaf niece I know sign language and before my grandkids could talk taught them some basic signs so they could communicate, back fired , when my granddaughter signed cookie please about an hour before supper
That is not a backfire. That is precious.
She's an angel!!
So, sweet your parents must be so proud & rightly so. Mom& dad what a wonderful job you're doing. Kudos!
This little girl is so darling. I know her parents are very proud!
I taught my daughters the basics of sign language. I got them a book where they can broaden their Horizons. I was surprised that they were signing words I never even knew.
We had lots of fun!
There was a "Touch Me" store in Castro Valley California.
The store was opened on behalf of the owners blind son.
You can go in the store and touch and play with the toys.
And of course each item had things written in Braille.
My daughters taught themselves how to read Braille.
I told them both it's like a secret language and they were enthused and amused that they knew three different "languages".
The mind of a child is like a sponge. They're able to absorb so much more than you can believe.
My kids are both over 20 and they both know sign language and how to read Braille. Not fluently but they continue to thrive on it.
Both have come in handy on several occasions.
Have a great day everyone!
Hi there.. how are you doing? Hope you’re fine and staying safe over there??
0:52 it’s kind of easy...for me 😂
So cute 💙
This little girl has wonderful parents! It's evident she will have a bright future!
I dont understand why it is so incredible that this child can sign. I mean, she's cute... but ASL is probably her first language. That she can sign is just as impressive as someone born to monolingual Spanish speaking parents can speak Spanish and translate for them.
Because singing in spanish isnt seen as a compasionate way to include family, which is total bs. I feel so weird about this video because yes, shes cute, yes her signing is great and should be encouraged. But the problem lies with with people treating her like her parents savior. Her parents are adults who have had to live in a world that isnt made with them in mind. They are strong! But the media is infantilizing the parents and doesn't bring up the need for translators.
Such a sweet little girl
Claire you ARE AWSOME!
I just want to hug you.
Sher Kendrick she really is awesome but ur comment made me laugh bc of my channel name
I know I am😉 jkjk😂😂😂
Isn't she just so precious! That will take her far in life!
There is a girl at my school that did that when we were young. She literally had the same situation as this young girl.
Children's brains are amazing. My daughter went to first grade not knowing one word of English.Teacher was speaking in English, she would respond in her native language. After 3 months, suddenly one day she started speaking perfect English.
Try that as an adult.
Blessed her soul :) She's so beautiful and loving.
You don't know struggle until you have to teach your non-deaf child how to speak when you yourself is not able to hear and speak words. Kudos to the parents and the other people who helped this little girl. May she grow up to be an advocate to the deaf community

Seeing this after watching the film CODA (Child of Deaf Adults). It's heart-warming.
This is both Precious and Sad at the same time.. As it shows the Lack of Awareness and Lack of Integration in Everyday Occasions in "Normal" Centric social groups.. A Childrens School Play /Christmas Celebration should already provide an Interpreter for children and parents who are deaf.. Think of the many schools and then how many deaf parents cannot engage and enjoy their childs School performance... Hopefully this girl and fanily will make a difference!
Most public schools can barely afford new books when old ones break. You have to provide a lot more "basic" stuff for the kids to use now because funding is being cut all the time. A full time interpreter is out of the question.
I went to school with a girl who hand deaf parents. Sometimes they would visit the class and her dad was the most enjoyable man on earth. Even though he couldn't speak very well he knew how to make us all laugh. It was awesome 👌🏻
This is so normal though? I know several CODAs, including myself, who do this all the time.
Wow what a smart sweet soul. Born with such a heart. Her parents should be so super proud
this is so cute I also have deaf parents
She’s so adorable and such a kind hearttt, God bless her!!.
She has an easy career ahead!

Aww i love her how sweet
Hi there.. how are you doing? Hope you’re fine and staying safe over there?
So many folks are Deaf or Hearing Impaired. It would be wonderful if common folks would reach out to the Deaf community and just be welcoming for a change. I did that with my husband who was Hearing Impaired before we were married and after twenty years he has taught me so much in life! The Deaf and Hearing Impaired communities have so much to offer and give to us all!
How awesome
Hi there.. how are you doing? Hope you’re fine and staying safe over there?
Being deaf myself I know how hard it is to learn sign language but this awsome little angel is a pro!! And a heroin because she's opened a new whole new world for her parent!!! If she was mine I'd be the proudest parent on earth!!
Excuse me, but WHO left the one and only dislike on this? And also: wtf is wrong with you?
It’s probably the chick who’s commenting that the reason why this is cute is internalized racism. Basically, it’s someone with no brain.
They’re usually bots. That’s why every video with a good amount of views have some dislikes, they’re dislike bots.
@rigorous mortis Ik same lol
I didn't click dislike but I found the tone of the report irritating. It made it sound like the kid was doing some kind of charity work to want to talk to her own parents like any kid wants to do. It was kind of sad and weird how they made something so natural into something exotic.
@@junbh2 Fair enough. I also find that most US media reports to be over the top and dramatic so I agree to a certain extent. But I just don't think clicking dislike (not you obviously but the others) is in itself an inappropriate response given that the actual situation is sweet. Isn't it? She's so cute! :D
I went all thru school and graduated with a friend whose Mom and Dad were both deaf. So, of course, her and all her siblings were proficient in sign. This year, my daughter chose sign language as her foreign language and I'm so proud of her for that! You never know how God may use something you can do to help others.
Hi there.. how are you doing? Hope you’re fine and staying safe over there??

See, there's hope for human kind. GOD bless this beautiful girl.
Was it impromptu? Lol I just wonder if her teacher was like “while everyone else dances why don’t you sign so your parents can understand what you’re singing too!” I mean.. there’s a good chance she just took it upon herself but.. I wouldn’t he surprised if it went down that way too lol
a loving child is exceptional,,and this one is love her parents more than anything in this world.
So how did she learn how to speak???
Please Stop Probably school and people around her
School
I would imagine she has grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc.. the whole world around her is hearing and speaking. She speaks perfectly well for a child of that age so she learned to speak long before school.
Most toddlers these days learn from watching TV. Blue's Clues, Sesame Street, Dora the Explorer, etc.
I got 2 deaf sisters. As we were growing up I was thier voice and ears. Learned sign language very young I enjoyed it cuz I love my sisters and it’s very hard for them but I never treated them different ❤️my respects to that little beautiful girl
i wonder if they are religious.
