“Can deaf people think?”
Deaf: hm, let me think about that
It prob meant do deaf people think in a voice or is it silent with sign language
Lol
Aestheticz国民 I watched a video, they say they think in sign language 🤟, but sometimes when they dream they can hear talking
✊ (yes)
Nope.
"Can deaf people think?"
Me: Can the people who asked that question think?
B Simms I think it was in terms of if they think with a voice
Literally. Beat me to it... how are these the top Googled questions? 🤷♂️
Kyle Emerson I agree. I think it was more asking if they have a voice in their head. Which is something I’ve wondered
@@kyleemerson831 You're probably right, though I initially took it the way Mixxie and Lia did.
It depends on the person and how much hearing they have. I have an internal voice because I can hear people's voices (though I can't understand them), and I speak English as well as ASL. Someone who's more significantly deaf than I am won't necessarily give the same answer. Like with a lot of the answers to the questions discussed here, it varies depending on whom you're talking to.
The scientific community has found that the answer to this very mind blogging question is
No.
I can't stop replaying 3:50. The way the eeeeeeeeeeee on the screen stretches, his facial expression, the way he stretches his hands to represent it going on annoyingly, and the audio accompaniment demonstrating the sound. It's perfect. It's like understanding how annoying a sound is in four languages.
ikr? I also love the fact that both his hands are signing the letter "E" too, making a unique onomatopoetic word! That's so cool that signing can do that!
Facts bro! They're being so passionate
@@sdsign4229 omg i didnt even notice that the sign is also e
@@percyweasley9534 it was my favourite part as a asl beginner I saw the e shape with his hand and got excited I realized that 😭
As someone who is half deaf and hears that sound at least 5 times a week, I had to skip it because hearing it triggered the sound in my deaf ear. In my younger years it was tolerable, but now it hurts. :(
As a non-deaf with slight spectrum disorder who doesn't understand nuance in communication, I really appreciate how extreme the facial gestures of deaf people can be. It helps me to read their emotions.
I’m deaf and aware autistic people use sign language but never realised this before thanks for sharing your experience.
Mute people can also use it it’s also good for babies as they pick up sign before speech

I know. What idiot thought that that was a good question?
I’m hard of hearing and was never taught how to sign. I actually realized a few years ago that my inner voice is just like reading subtitles. I think in written English as strange as that seems, lol.
@Meg I was kind of expecting them to say they think in written language. It’s very interesting that different people think differently!
Wait same! Like closed captioning! I'm deaf and went deaf very recently but even when i was hearing I thought in written English. Luckily when i went deaf i already knew ASL though
I love how deaf people are so much more expressive in their looks when they are talking. I could just watch Lia talk for hours and not get bored, in a not creepy way, of course.
yep, facial expressions are everything in sign language
I love how Lia responded to the 1st question with
"Deaf people can do EVERYTHING. Except hear. I AM NOT JUST MY EAR."

@@mariamendoza8934 Hi stop bothering people on the internet about your imaginary friend :)
@@mariamendoza8934 Stop judging others, that's also a part of that religion you seem to follow.
I think the first question about deaf people being able to think was actually trying to ask “ do they have an inner voice like in your head voice “
If they've always been completely deaf and could never hear then having an inner voice would be impossible since they were never exposed to a spoken language or sound in general. Their thinking would be purely visual. The same way someone that was always blind would be incapable of thinking visually and would have their thinking be all auditory.
@@Justin-zk8jq Huh?? So they think in hand signs? Like if a deaf person was to be reading this exact sentence they wouldn't be able to hear it in their heads? They would sign it in their minds?
@@s.a.8548 This is what I think the Google search was actually trying to ask, "Do they think in sign language?"
@@s.a.8548 right. If they have never experienced sound before they couldn't possibly simulate it in their thoughts. They wouldnt need to visualize the whole sentence in order to comprehend it though. Just like we don't need to read word for word in our heads. Human brains work faster than that.

As a deaf person myself, despite being deaf since birth I still don’t always appreciate how varied the hearing situation is for different deaf people. But it’s so diverse with many who may say they find things to be different. Also, every country seems to have their own sign language. USL (US) and BSL (British) are very different.
Some deaf people were born hearing and lost their hearing so they are better at speaking because they were born hearing in a hearing world
it's funny how some hearing people think that deaf people can't talk. when i was in junior high, i have a deaf classmate who's so loud. he's funny and is very energetic. sometimes he laughs in the middle of a class discussion, lmao. and we would just laugh it off. but he's not often staying in our classroom cause he hangs out with the other deaf students. he's very talkative and funny that we would often choose to chat with him than actually listening to the teachers lol. he's just such a funny person. we would often joke around and he would say f*ck off or f*ck you as "ma yo!" and we would just laugh with him.
i hope everyone learns that deaf people are the same as everyone. they chat during class discussions. they laugh, very loudly that is. cause they couldn't hear themselves and wouldn't know if they're being too loud. they joke around too. they're very loving and caring. unlike some hearing people

And yeah!! She said they also have their own way of enjoying music, being a musician (amateur of course), It is amazing to know they do, but also I’m curious to know in what unique way they can feel the music. 😃
They are just Amazing people!!
Their facial expressions are stronger than non deaf people.
Dekross YESSS AND IT SO MESMERISING and amazing 😍💓💓😁😁😁😁
Dekross Yes, that's a big part of sign language
Well since they can't normally speak, or hear themselves speak, not only does sign language and body language play an important part, but obviously, so does facial expressions! Kinda like tone of voice. So being very expressive and kinda exaggerating helps emphasize on what they're saying. Sign language comes in different languages, so Asl is American sign language, there's British sign language, Irish sign language, and more. So it's not all the same.
I think they have to be
Yeah well because maybe they rely on it. Just saying
The girl's facial expressions gimme life. She seems funny and sarcastic as hell

That was a great conversation. Thank you so much Mixxie and Lia. I didn't know that you can sometimes hear your ears ringing. I feel like this would be a great platform to share with children. Growing up, my friend had a brother who was deaf. His parents bought a family car for the kids to share. It was a standard. He drove it like he was the boss. All the best to both of you. Thank you.
My elderly neighbor is deaf and his wife recently died who was also deaf so I'm learning sign to communicate easier with him

“Can deaf people think?”
....
“That’s the most commonly asked question”
Wtf
I've never thought about that!
I was shook
I was like "wtf" too at the beginning, but if you think about it it does make a lot of sense. When we think, thoughts appear in our head as voice and speech. Babies don't know speech, so they think in pictures. The concept that a person who doesn't know how voice is even supposed to sound like, who doesn't know what sound actually is, can think in sentences, in real voice inside their head - it's an interesting thing.
I know thats fucked up, like wtf theyre people.
Im pretty sure they mean if they hear when they think
Kinks _ well not it does make sense. When we think there’s that little voice in our head. Without sound how do they hear that little voice. It’s the same little voice inside your head that’s reading this. Well if your not reading this out loud that is
Sign language is amazing...so expressive!!! I love how the signing just flows together, much like a very well-written book or crafted story *^^*
Thank you for posting this video. I met and have had encounters with a number of deaf people in my lifetime. I have found them to be some of the most kind, considerate and well mannered people I have ever met.
I once attended a stand-up comedy routine performed by a deaf person. It was during an ASL class. The audience was made up of deaf and hearing people. While the performer signed for those who were deaf, there was a voice coming over the speaker to interpret his signs, for those of us who are just beginning to learn sign language. It was quite the experience. The entire audience was laughing. It didn’t matter if you were deaf or hearing. We all enjoyed it. It was quite a memorable experience and one I’m glad that I had.
Love how animated the girl is. It’s like I can literally hear her speak through her hands.
That’s the point of sign language

My mother was taught to read lips instead of sign language. She does it so well that she can tell when people have accents.
that's amazing!
Oh wow, that's incredible.
I was born deaf and had years of speech therapy after my hearing got fixed, and I can’t really read lips, but I can usually tell when someone has certain kinds of accents and speech impediments from the posture of their tongue/lips
@@summeradan9665 I only get 1 word out of five Trying to lip read A telly show is actually funning.
I can do this too! I've been lipreading all my life. Sometimes I turn the sound and captions off when watching tv and I can lipread whole sentences and pick up on accents.
The “did I just hear the phone ring?” Got me 😂😂 I love when people embrace their struggles and figure out a way to make a positive out of it even if it’s just comedy.
The facial expressions they make them seem so much more lively then some of us hearing people.
Well the facial expressions are an important part of sign language as it's how tone is conveyed so naturally, deaf people are much more emotive
I know. It is just so interesting to see how much more expressive they are compared to hearing people.
The way we use tone in our voice, they use facial expressions as their voice tone

Which is hilarious because it's a video about a disability
Yes, that was soo annoying
wayv full screen mate, try it
I think it might have been so the words are near their faces
It's very important to not just get the word translation but also the tone from facial expressions because we can't really 'hear' sign language. A lot is expressed through a face's "non manual markers" which are important in communication, especially in sign language which is visual rather than auditory. So putting the subtitles at the top closer to their faces might be a way of getting us to see their expressions as we read the words.

2.I perfected signing for a crush he was so darn cute and the sweetest thing ever I remember sitting by him and he never said a thing no one else was deaf like him so he felt out of place I already knew basic signing and he was elated that someone his age knew something about his way of communicating besides the teachers. I have to say, CODA inspired me to start learning ASL :) so here I came across this cool video learning a little bit more about the deaf world ~ sign language seems so .. expressive, I love it :) visually representing words kind of puts one closer to the real thing they describe. I feel words are sometimes too disconnected from what they describe. Not to mention some of hearing people say “oh, that’s hilarious” referring to a joke.. but without any emotional expression of what they claim to experience. Thanks for sharing these insights with the rest of the world.
I learned ASL in high school and was pretty good at it. One of my best memories signing was surprising this deaf man at the mall. He was trying to raise awareness for the deaf and was handing out ASL alphabet pens and I started signing with him. He was so amazed and thankful a hearing person was signing with him. Only a few tables away a group of girls started mocking us by moving their hands around and trying to mimic us and staring at us. They were really rude making fun of us, but I’ll never forget making his day. Such a heart warming story. I like your story. You can be a support to those who are deaf. You know what, my name is Juan too lol but I'm not a Spanish dude
I have a question, what made you pick up ASL because you didn't have to since you were not deaf.

I never even considered thst deaf people think in sign language! That is so interesting!
I suppose it depends when you lost your hearing and whether you are completely deaf or just partially - my mate lost their hearing completely as an adult and he thinks in English not bsl (I think if you lost your hearing at a young age or youre born deaf then youd automatically think in sign language as that's the language you've learnt from a very young age)
Maybe they think in images like me I rarely think in words
@@aayy11300 and I guess it also depends on whether you know sign language. I know some deaf people who never learnt sign or who studied it when they were older, and I assume they think in images rather than language, or in written language? I never really asked
Speaking to one of my indian co-workers who learned english in school in india but didn't move to america until his late 20s, it took a couple years before talking to someone in english that he didn't have to translate it to hindu first in his head.
Even as a child of deaf adults, when I think there are many times I think in ASL.
I think a standard sign language should be taught in all schools around the world
Not sure if you know but sign language isn't universal, it varies from country to country. But otherwise, I wholeheartedly agree that at least the basics of the countries sign language should be taught in school!
@@seherling207 They should totally make some kind of universal language that can be draw on your hand and teach it at schools. That way not matter where you are in the world you can talk with anyone even if they are deaf or blind.
@@averywallace6677 language is affected by culture, well its part of it. Some hand gestures can be offensive or does not make sense to a person of another culture. That's why its nearly impossible to have a universal sign language or even a speaking universal language. People try with Esperanto but...not that commom
Absolutely 👍🏻
@@averywallace6677 I want to add something to this! We discussed a bit about sign language interpreting in class this week and apparently an International Sign, short IS, does exist
It's just not a fleshed out language, like there is no fixed grammar and no standard vocabulary and primarly used for simple conversations. It's rather a mixture of signs from a bunch of signs languages from all around the world, mainly western ones.
It heavily relies on your mimic, gesture, and body language. Not everyone knows it though bc most don't have the chance to use it regularly. The non-existant standard vocabulary proves to be a hurdle as well, as it requires knowledge of at least one other expansive sign language, eg ASL. If someone knows ASL they will have an easier time with IS than eg someone who speaks Malaysian Sign Language where signs differ a lot from ASL
They are so sweet mixxie is like the calm one and friendly one and ayla is the talkative and extrovert one damn i love both of them

It is not. It adds to ASL to give more meaning of what they are signing.
Aint a mood
People don’t understand the meme world where when we say “IT’S A MOOD”, we mean we do that sometimes. Sometimes I talk to myself in my head and I don’t know what I’m thinking.
They're so cute!?!? I love how they smile with their eyes!!! I feel all warm and fuzzy!

@ThatOneVeryWeirdArtist Lmao don't worry :) have a nice day
@ThatOneVeryWeirdArtist Lmao It was something along the lines of "pls inbox me there is something I want to show you"
This was a great video. I'm trying to learn sign language, and I thought that I was getting good at it, man these two are fast, I had to slows down the video, but then it became a good exercise.
Awe...it's always good to respect others and be kind as well. I don't know sign language but I would love to learn, maybe buzzfeed can do a series like that. I usually communicate by writing & also paying close attention to the movements. I never want a customer to feel frustrated interacting with me if they are either blind or deaf....so far my approach has been good but there's always improvement especially learning sign language. I always take my time to really focus & understand the questions and hopefully be able to provide information as well to my customers.
Positive vibes
Bill Vicars has a website and UA-cam channel and has been recommended by a lot of Deaf people (that I've seen) for people to start learning!
@@abyss6484 Thank you for the recommendation...I'll check it out.
Have a good day🤗

I thought that the girl is talkative when she didn't even talk. Wow.
they both seem like very talkative people even if they're deaf lol
She is talking
In her language
Would you say that to a Spanish speaking person or a French? Probably not
ASL is the language of the Deaf community, it is how they communicate. So regardless if she is making noise or not, she is talking
Madeline Tuflija preach
@@madelinetuflija3055 yes I understand, she is communicating with us 😄
@@madelinetuflija3055 no, the definition of talking is "to engage in speech" and the definition of speech is "the expression of or the ability to express thoughts and feelings by articulate sounds." So no, not talking but she is communicating.
Only their expression is enough for me to understand.... So true and expressing
I just love how expressive both of them are! :3
The girl was out of this world adorable.
She is cute & funny.

Their facial expressions or so on point!!! It gives life to the subtitles.
why is buzzfeed giving deaf people such old computers though?

AH! Lia is in my Deaf Culture class, I can assure you all she is just as wonderful in person as she is perceived in this video!
Fr bro? That’s so cool!
Bree can I just ask, how do group discussions work? Like how do you mediate who's talking and who everyone pays attention to? In non-deaf culture it's governed by a lot of subverbal noises and heard interruptions, and volume plays a key role.
is she pretty also in person?
@@boiledelephant I would like to know too!
I only know the alphabet in sign language, but doesnt she sign her name with a Y instead of an I?
I think what the first question was really asking "do you hear an inner monologue?" or "do you think in language?", which is actually a very good question imo
It's Friday 18th June, I'm Brazilian and I'm drunk right now, I searched for "videos to deaf people" and this video shows up. I'm incredibly happy about it. Those two people were so expressive, I'm happy to found out they are so alike even though they cannot listen.
okay.... mixxie is the cutest person i've ever seen omg
@@rumallya2941 why does it matter?
He is trans! 😊
I don’t care what gender, sexuality, whatever. He’s cute and so is his name
Alois _ He’s a he... he has a UA-cam channel and his about days “transgender man”. So he doesn’t go by they/them.
Talaveth That might me true in this case, but nevertheless some (trans) men go by they/them. You don’t *have* to be non-binary or trans to go by they/them :)
"Do deaf people think?"
"Are deaf people brainless like me?"
I think that question was basically just the "do deaf people have an inner voice" question, but poorly worded.

I love how they are more expressive than most of the people that are able to hear. It catches the eye and makes the conversation more interesting.
