Solo In India's Famous Slum 🇮🇳

- I vistited one of the most famous slums in the world, Dharavi. I got warned not to go there without a tour guide but I wanted to get the authentic experience and it certainly lived up to my expectations.
Dharavi is a locality in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, considered to be one of Asia's largest slums. Dharavi has an area of just over 2.1 square kilometres and a population of about 1,000,000. With a population density of over 277,136/km2 , Dharavi is one of the most densely populated areas in the world.

#mumbai #dharavi #dharavislum
I've been getting negative comments about why I am going to slums and “promoting India as a poor country” so I'm going to explain here why I do it and maybe some of you will understand. Even though Ironically I've filmed 4 videos showcasing Modern Mumbai (Taj Palace, Phoenix Mall, Marine drive and Imagica theme park) but people are saying I only films slums. My channel is based on OFF THE BEATEN PATH travel destinations not upper class neighbourhoods and shopping malls.
1) I go to these places because they are the best places for content, they have the most interesting and kind people who love to be on camera, often when I go to the nice areas in the city I get stopped for filming (it happened at Taj Palace, Every shopping mall and every theme park i went to) or people just camera shy and its really not engaging. I am not promoting India as a poor country at all, I'm showing interesting content that is very unique to this city, and throughout this video you may see how I positively showcase this slum as a producer of many useful goods and services aswell as generally a happy place.
2) I go to these places because they are so different to everything I've ever known, I could drive 10 mins from my home in the UK and visit a boring modern shopping mall, but can I visit an area where 1 millions people live together in 2 square miles? This is so fascinating to me and I thoroughly enjoyed my time here.
If you have any constructive criticism to say please email me at contact@harryjaggard.com and I will gladly take it on board but to just say Im promoting India as a poor country is absolutely false.
loving the videos Harry, Keep up the good work, from a fellow Brit!! cold here today!
You can’t please everyone bud, the more views you get the more negative comments you will get! Atleast it looks like the positive outweighs the negative :) There will always be people who want to find a reason to be negative, any person with half a brain can see that you’re just trying to spread positivity and show people another side of life they might not have seen
As you always say, the positive always outweighs the negative. The modernized areas people are usually more prone to sticking to there own life and there is always security reasons due to which we have restrictions. The areas visited where we have although poor or menial wage workers we can find happiness, welcoming spirit, love and peace and just engaging in a simple conversation makes them happy. Keep up the good work and enjoy your stay in India. You can't make the hyper nationalist happy all the time. Hoping you reach out to more and more people with your humility and jovial character.
No need to justify, India has 1.4 billion people with good number of hyper nationalists. You can't make everyone happy. We in India are used to hearing hundreds of opinions so ignore the negative comments and travel wherever you want just stay safe. No need to go to modern places just for the sake of pleasing a small section of your viewers as majority of us love original content and not sugarcoated. Love from India.
Edit : Please pin your comment.
Ignore the negativity buddy ✌️ Your doing great & continue your vlogs 🤝 love from Chennai 🇮🇳 Pin your comment in your post👍
Harry dont apologise for anything, a certain section of society is permanently offended by everything and they like to ruin normal life for everyone else, you are a polite respectful young man and your videos are excellent
Thanks mate! very kind of you, means alot to me
Its ok slums are every where even in new york city show that too
Offended is not the right word. Tired is. Slum tourism is a foreigner's thing. Mostly western ones at that. They come and then we hear about cliche lines that's the real India as if unless rest of us too live in slums, we are not real. Followed by how they are happier and some customary lines with some changes..
So slum tourism stereotypes India. At the same time it also stereotypes foreigners for Indians. Foreign tourists are offered slum tours arranged by people in the business. It's ironic sometimes, some times annoying, and sometimes insert eye roll moment. Hey a new alien landed in slums - flew thousands of miles to experience it. Congratulations!
Best of all he didnt walk around with a Diaper on his face.
The Hawk's Eye You have a point. But not sure what to think about this... in the Philippines, the cheesy vloggers who go to the slums to exploit the poor are just on a whole new level of cringe.
That uncle ji that you bought the hat from warmed my heart… very honest, kind and god fearing man…🙏🏽
I thought the same too. He is not getting enough credit on the comments just because he is a Muslim i suppose.
@@luigihatesyou4217 very true.
India used to be a very diverse secular place. But right now it is quite religiously polarized because of hindutwa.
You're a breath of fresh air for indian vlogs, your energy is unparalleled and your attitude towards locals is great.. Having a blast watching these videos.
Don’t worry about those criticizing you about visiting slums Harry. Do what you feel is right for you and what you want to experience. These videos are interesting and immersive and that’s what matters most. Cheers brother
thanks kardoso for the kind words
Your way of explaining things is very nice! God bless!
It's great to wander around and explore different areas and I'm glad I can see these places through your videos! Keep safecant wait for more!
thanks alot priya!
The genuine reactions from the children says it all and sums it all that happiness is not defined by the amount of money in one's hand.
A Rich experience for the viewer. There is a great message in this vlog that really connects in more ways than one. Nice work Harry!
thanks alot Maz, you got it right exactly, alot of lessons to be learnt from places like these
@Harry Jaggard Thank you Harry for a genuine unbiased vlog. Poverty is nothing to be ashamed of. What matters is the state of mind of an individual. One can be poor but be blessed with the mindset of a Billionaire in simple terms. Sometimes kindness is found where there is the least. Many positives from your vlog.
Rich people dont care about happiness! Only the middle classes were brainwashed to pursuit happiness so they can be kept as slaves for all eternity.
That's where white people get it wrong
We Indians r just happy to be acknowledged on cameras
They were abusing harry and they are happy till they are child.
Fantastic video Harry! One of the best I have seen on India. I am going back for my 6th trip this November I am super impressed at your attitude and all around solo navigation this being your first trip. Keep the videos coming!!!
Its good youre showing all sides of India. Plus all your other trips are very diverse with regard to all to the people youve come across. Keep up the good work !

You are great person bro.... thanks for exploring the great country india... happy journey
most of the people who live in the slums of the big cities in India are the migrants from small villages. they all have their houses In the villages. they live in the slums because of the low rent. if they start earning more in the cities then they move to bigger homes.
interesting i never knew this
@@harryjaggardtravel yes he is right

Hey Harry , welcome to Mumbai , best thing about life is to be proud and accept what u have , yes Mumbai has the biggest Slum in Asia and it has its own issues but it also has a vibrant economy of it's own , which indicates people work very hard to make a living, that hair cut of yrs looks really great , and believe me from all the people you dealt with nobody ripped u off being foreigner , which speaks volume of their character , continue to show India the way you do. Loads of love from Mumbai , and a proud Indian ❤️
Nice vlog machan.🇱🇰🇱🇰 you have selected uncommon content .very nice ..🇱🇰

What a brilliant video Harry!! Just love watching u 👍 keep up the amazing work 👏 🍺🇬🇧
thanks alot Alistair!
Great video, Harry! I've recently subscribed and am truly enjoying your travels, particularly in India! At 32:50mins in, you were talking how in Dharavi, there are a multitude of religions, all living together peaceably. Just as you were wondering if there were any Christians there, along your left side, in one of the buildings was a large white cross at what appeared to be an altar! You couldn't have timed it better than that! From NYC.
Very very appreciative job Harry.. keep it up 👍🏼.. whatever u spoke bout Dharavi is absolutely true.. I'm a resident of Dharavi since 30 years ...Indian government always fails 2 abolish d slum..U are d best vlogger 4 me , gentle and kind man..b blessed 🙌🏼 .. let's hope 4 sucessful Dharavi City plan in future ..

Just amazing footage Harry, and very humbling. I love how you treat everyone you meet with respect and kindness. The resilience and innovation of the people to not just survive but to thrive in such an impoverished environment, and the sense of community that obviously exists just blows me away. Thanks so much for taking us along. The smiles of the children will stay with me for a long time. Maybe after seeing you some of them will be inspired to become future UA-camrs?! 😄
thanks so much! so kind, yes the people there should be very proud of themselves and i think some of them will have a bright future, very happy people aswell!
I heard Dharavi will be redevelop..the work will gonna start within 3 months, is that right?
Someone say:So this is taj palace
Foreigners : no i like dharavi the slum because i show only poverty in india 😒
Hey Harry ! Love your videos ❤️
So chilled. Fab
Great insight on the slums of Mumbai, have heard about it read about it was sure nice to see your outlook of the place. I really enjoyed this thank you
but my point is why to focus on the other countries poor side , specially it is caused by Western people only. hight of hypocrisy. you should focus on your hypocrite nature first than commenting on other way of living
Hats off bro nice work what you are doing.. Appreciate bro

Mind blowing vlog bro 👍👌
17:29 very sad moment 😔
Harry. You put in some very nice words towards the end. Essentially saying don't take things for granted in life. Appreciate what we think we are entitled to. Wish most of us would think that way everyday. Would probably see a whole lot of less complaining then. Thank you.
thanks alot yes be happy with what you have got
Brother no one would be offended if you visit slums . You can go everywhere and can show everything
Your welcome 🙏❤️
As an indian, dharavi is not a slum its a village where everyone do hardwork.
Slum isn't technically a negative word... People just take it as a negative term. 🙄
They are happy.

love watching your videos bro, from Nagpur, Maharashtra.

Dear Harry
Just half way thru the clip and writing this epistle..so I may not forget my observations :
1. U r so o o o popular among the kids 😀
2. U r making good choices as where to say NAMASTEY n ASSALAM O ALAIKM almost 80% correct ... Nice hearing ALLAH HAFIZ ( meaning GOD B WID U )
3. U were respectful while mentioning LADIES n their HARD WORK 👍
4. Great uncle jee who sold u the cap Just for 80 /- rupees n also politely refused to take any extra .. Great Indian 👍
5. Very friendly neighbourhood.
Clip going amazing ..... 👏
So I go back to the remaining half ... TC 🙂

Amazing vlog harry
Actually its real Mumbai Indian media doesn't show this side of india harry you did it great 👍
Agreed it's Real but these slums are depleting fast...Mumbai soon will be one of the most luxurious cities of Asia
Oh Pakistani 😂😂 tumhe pata hai Mumbai kaisa hai ya tumhare fake media ko aur ye Mumbai ka poor area hai
Real Mumbai tumne dekha na toh tum pakistanio ki eyes bahar aa jayengi 😂😂
Lol 😂 everyone show poor part of Mumbai you Pakistani r mad
I like your videos you are doing great
Yes , u r most polite foreign blogger I have ever seen . U just need not apologize coz u r not criticizing , u r just showing life . N most who understand English feel same as you do about dharavi n about huge social divide . We feel lucky we r not at the other end . Living in Mumbai n traveling home every day by train n crossing sion railway station ( dharavi is walkable from sion as u know) we ( the economically better Mumbai people) could never miss their struggle to survive , same as we felt in crowded trains
36:45 omg! can't believe.. the building you can see behind, I live there 😂
Love the video ❤
The number one export of Dharvi (or it used to be) are the luggage handles you see for the wheeled luggage.

It's Rs.5 there and it's 25 rs (Indian Rupees) here in Sri Lanka. That literally sums up our economical situation here 🙃

Hello harry, what is your graduation?
Those kids were cursing you in a funny way 😂
Great travelogue through India's famous slum! The place most definitely would never be on a travel agency's itinerary. So without your video, many would never see the place! Thank you. Did you notice, yes, it may be a slum and the majority of people living there may be poorer than dirt. However, an important point: you weren't accosted, robbed or otherwise bothered by the people living there! On the contrary, they were extraordinarily nice and pleasant - just regular people like you and I. It goes to show that, and not to generalize, but just because they may be lacking in monetary means, they're certainly not without their morality and moral standards. Sometimes you can learn quite a bit, from just a short half hour travelogue, such as this one! Thank you for that.
You missed out on the home industries in Dharavi. It is a major supplier and exporter of leather products and other products like ready made garments, engineering goods, etc. You should check out the video made by 'India In Details' about Dharavi Slums, which tells about the difference in slums in India compared to slums in USA and Europe. Because you would definitely not have visited the slums in Europe and USA, you would be definitely surprised by the video.
Honestly, I like this type of content better than upscale residential neighborhoods and shopping centers.
Hey,bro no one gets to the roof as indian railways is electrified,so u cannot be at the top, yeah but some casualties happens due to hanging on the door
Hi Harry Machang, Thanks for taking us to Dharavi slums. I have been to Mumbai few times but I didn't had an opportunity to go there. May be I was afraid. Actually it is better than I thought. People looked nice and relaxed without any arrogance. Particularly I liked the school children. They looked very nice and refine. I am sure that they will have a great future which is good for India.
it was safe for me and i would recommend it!
@@harryjaggardtravel Are you guys absolutely dumb, that's neither a tourist place nor a zoo of humans
I fully enjoyed your vlog
Hey Harry it's great that you managed to show both the sides of Mumbai in a comprehensive and unbiased manner. As a Mumbaikar and as an Indian it is heartening to see the balanced nature of your videos unlike some of the others from your country. However just a reminder : this is probably the last you would see Dharavi as a slum as it is all set to change. By the next 5 years if you visit Dharavi you would be surprised to see that it will be transformed into a modern state of the art township with refurbished architecture and better amenities as the government is closely working on cluster redevelopment of the entire area. Already some of the land has been acquired and construction is expected to start in a few months. Mumbai City itself will wear a totally new and modern, sleek look in a couple of years time when South Asia's biggest underground Metro opens in Mumbai by 2024. There is a lot of work which is still in progress in this city and lot of it yet to start for expansion and modernization. Also a reason why you may have noticed that the city resembles some kind of a huge construction site.
thanks Akhil i really appreciate this, so interesting to hear that the dharavi will no longer be a slum and its very exciting to hear about the metro, i would love to visit when this is done
Nice video ❤❤❤❤
