  • You've seen reading booktuber's favourite books, I raise you booktuber's scariest books. I read 9 scary books that were universally agreed upon to scare the crap out of me and boy did it ruin my life for a good month and a half. Let's ask the age-old question: can we trust booktubers to scare us just in time for Halloween and spooky season? Watch and find out.
THANK YOU to all the amazing booktubers, those that I referenced and those I didn't. Without such a thriving community, the ideas and books and editing styles and excitement for videos like this wouldn't be possible.

I love Stolen Tongues! It has so many super creepy moments but the ending is just so lacklustre. The trouble is it began life as a reddit post on like creepypasta or something. So the author turned his real life fiances night terrors into a creepy story and wrote it from his own perspective, so that's why it's written from an outsider rather than from the person it's actually happening to. I would still reread it in a heartbeat and I still think it's the book that's genuinely creeped me out the most, but it's not perfect and I think it's origins are why.

Really enjoying this video :) I think it's important to point out for Moon of the Crusted Snow is that, even though the town itself is fictional, the historical context of why that town exists is not fictional (ie the Canadian government actually did force indigenous people all over Canada into Reserve land and does not provide them with the resources to sustain these towns). I also enjoyed Moon of The Crusted Snow so it's good to see other people talking about it :)

Thanks for the rec for The Silent Companions that you reference at the beginning. I checked it out as an ebook after watching your gothic reads vid and it was the spooky book I’ve been looking for this season! Much more my vibe since I am not a horror reader in general and I could not put it down! Have already recommended it to a friend and returned it to the library so she can check it out 😊
Definitely picking up some of these to try, When The Reckoning Comes has been on my TBR since Kayla talked about it and now it’s moved to the top of my list. Do more of these, maybe different genres if you want to venture out, who knows?

Very happy for you that this Video got you so many new viewers 😊 I'm definetly picking up Tinfoil Butterfly!
If you're up for something scary again I'd recommend The Luminous Dead by Caitlin Starling and Echo by Thomas Olde Heuvelt (both some of my all time faves). The Luminous Dead is a scifi horror blend with an incredible tense athmosphere and Echo is kinda similar to Stolen Tongues premise where this guy is in a terrible mountain climbing accident and his boyfriend is trying to help him through the trauma but quickly realises there's something very wrong with his partner.
Both reads are not for everyone but they're absolutly worth a try!

I haven't read The Patient (as a book) so I don't know if I'm right, but I'm pretty sure it started like as a Reddit post, which is why it feels like someone posted about it on the internet.

Glad to discover your channel and hear your take on these books. I cannot handle Tender is the Flesh..respect to anyone who can!
The best horror book I’ve read this year is Suffer the Children by Craig DiLouie. You mentioned messed up children, it’s got those. The author managed to create a world where he thought of so much in 350 pages and every chapter felt important. I just love the perspectives he chose, even one character is a trash collector and that gave us access to this world that helped show so much.
I’ve seen some reviews that they wouldn’t do what the parents did. As a parent I can say yes you would, you absolutely would. People take away different things from books, but that desperation might be the ultimate horror in the book to me.
As you can tell I just wish everyone would read and enjoy this book. 😊
I loved When the Reckoning Comes…I’ve already decided it’s required reading for my son when he gets a bit older (because of the gruesome scenes). But the thoughts through the main characters eyes about the plantation, horrific.

I just finished The Hollow Places. One of my all time favourite horror books is "The Willows" by Algernon Blackwood (No not."woody" morewood as per the hollow places lol), so it was a suprise to start reading this and see its essentially an unofficial sequel 😂
Seriously though, The Willows is the OG version of this book and so so much better. It's pretty short as well. Please add it to your ever growing TBR list!
(Worth mentioning Kingfisher's style seems like it's not for me personally - the modern slightly cheesy/comedic way of presenting the story - I read the whole way through though.)

I read Tender is the Flesh over a year ago, and I STILL think about it every now and then. Definitely more disturbing than scary, but such a good read. That author just released an English translation of a short story collection as well called Nineteen Claws and a Blackbird, which is SO good.
Edit: I'm at your review of this currently and part of me almost wonders if the disconnect may have something to do with the fact that it is a translation. I've noticed with a lot of translated works, the tone does come across as slightly disconnected.

    • @kamigreen455

Also I feel the same about Night of the Mannequins. I was pretty disappointed, however I LOVED SGJ's books The Only Good Indians, Mongrels, and My Heart is a Chainsaw. I haven't read his sequel to Chainsaw yet, but the other three are so good and fun to read.

Not horror, but the last book that literally terrified me was I'll be Gone in the Dark by Michelle McNamara. I highly suggest you give it a whirl!! And I LOVED Gravity Falls and LOVE T. Kingfisher.

Dude that McNamara book sounds actually terrifying * adds to TBR *
I haven’t had a miss with Kingfisher’s books yet and I’m definitely getting up there in how many I’ve read - super excited for the one that just came out!

Ok I’m going to be the person late to the party. What are Booktubers and how do I see their videos. I downloaded an app called Booktube but I can’t seem to watch any videos.

Sorry if you’ve mentioned this before and I missed it, but is there a reason you have never read American Psycho?

    • @itsbells
      @itsbells  8 місяців тому

I definitely don’t mention it in the video so you didn’t miss it! I have always been interested in the story since it’s such a popular reference and decided to watch the movie first, and the visuals actually upset me so much for some reason that I’m scared of the book and just took it off my TBR and never thought about it again 😂

I strongly disliked the silent companions. It bored me. Check out the Village by Camilla Stein. Also check out the novella part 1 of The Forgotten and the Damned.

Tender is the flesh made me a vegetarian for two weeks and honestly I can never eat meat now without feeling mildly disgusted

It seems that I should avoid The Twisted Ones. I read The Hollow Places, and it personally wasn't for me. That being said I think it was good in the horror element, and had good worldbuilding. But that was also all I really like. If the twisted ones is like this then I am probably not going to enjoy it. Did you read the author's note or acknowledgements at the back. Because it speaks about how the idea came to her and why she felt compelled to write it. I, in general, tries to avoid food horror, so Tender is the Flesh is on the no pile for me. I also saw a negative review for it a while back and it doesn't look like something I would enjoy. I read Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke, and I straight up gagged every time I saw meat for like three months after finishing it. Moon of the Crusted Snow sounds amazing though and very up my alleyway. I think I will be picking that one up.

I had NO IDEA Things Have Gotten Worse has food stuff in it that makes me even less excited to read it 😅 I would say Twisted Ones and Hollow Places feel like they could be in the same world, Twisted Ones is more folk horror than cosmic horror though but if it’s the tone you don’t like I totally get that
I did read the authors notes! I’m really enjoying updated retellings of classic novels, not just horror, although I definitely prefer updated Lovecraft vs reading Lovecraft myself lmao

I was suuuper underwhelmed by Tender is The Flesh. Maybe i need to reread it but i got major vegan preachy vibes and then when i looked up the author, i was correct. Even the slaughterhouse scene didn't do much for me but maybe I was having trouble in general picturing things. The character also felt so flat and grey, but that was probably the point...it was just a big miss

SAME. I felt like I had to work to care about it and that just isn’t how I like to engage in books. I didn’t know that about the author but honestly *unsurprising* lol

I’m a little disappointed with this video solely for the fact you spoiled one of the books I actually added to my list to read. I’m sure you could just left with “I didn’t like certain things about the book” without spoiling it. And it’s honestly because of that reason I really didn’t want to continue watching the video.

I was disappointed. When you drop a spoiler bomb you said first and warned after. I love your energy and appreciate your opinions and recommendations however I'm more scared to finish watching you than I am to read the books. A book I wanted to read plus a movie I wanted to watch.... I won't be now. I feel like I'm back when I was young and a guy ruined the sixth sense for me. Sorry. But you seen very cool and fun
