Honestly on a rewatch I am just assuming that Belle loves a project. All other cursonas after all had some elements of their real selves, so at the very least Belle thinks it's hot that Gold beats people with his cane, she just knows it's not cool
The part of the family tree that gets me is that Mary Margret is not only Henry’s Grandmother but also his step sister making Henry his mother’s uncle. But yeah totally not complicated.
Tbh that doesn't really make him her uncle. It's not uncommon for grandparent to take in a grandchild as their own, so it's not THAT weird until you start trying to put these unnecessary labels on these relationships

The easy parts? Cora? Still a miller's daughter, not married to Big Henry, failed to turn straw into gold, executed. Regina? Definitely not a queen, definitely not causing mayhem and evil wherever she goes, doesn't exist. Small Henry? Well, he definitely doesn't evist. Even Emma wouldn't have been born because David and his twin brother would both have been farm boys seeing as there'd probably be no Rumplestiltskin to do all of his deals. Snow White's mother wouldn't even be dead! That would be such a boring family tree.

My only criticism is that you didn't include Hook as Neil's step-father on Mila's side. Because that makes the family tree SO MUCH funnier (and more confusing) as the seasons go on.
To be fair he technically isn't. As far as we know Hook and Milah never got married and when Hook presents the option to Baelfire he turns him down very harshly. So at most he was his moms boyfriend/guardian. Though I do agree that it make the family tree much funnier 😂

Tom Clark could have been the most hilarious and/or depressing character in the show but it never gets to play out Like imagine one day you’re outside your town line, feeling a bit weird, and the second you turn around six guys from your town are just. calling you Sneezy. And the entire town is pretending to be fairy tale characters. And you’re just being socially excluded coz you’re the only one who isn’t in on this weird larp session. It would be the weirdest mindfuck in the world Dude’s just the reverse Henry of the season but it barely gets addressed and that’s sad

@@TheDimensionDweller I would strongly advise you to watch his performance for yourself at some point - the actor who played Peter Pan was a teenager at the time and did an incredible performance and an amazing job with the version of the character we get in the show, especially considering he gets a lot of scenes opposite one of the show's best actors. There's a reason it's one of the most fondly remembered and strongest arcs of the show. The people went truly feral and for a good reason
I think the reason Rumple keeps making deals where the cost is giving up ya baby is because of his deep guilt and self-loathing at the fact that he chose magic and power over being with Bae and now it comes out all twisted with him always trying to prove that any parent would give up their child for the right price.. and they kinda do be choosing their needs and desires over keeping their kids lol.
I think it's the opposite. That he believes that he's better than other parents because they give theirs up willingly while he lost Baelfire unwillingly

A part of me thinks that a lot of Jefferson's characteristics and plots ended up being combined with Killian's. From reading some of the creators interviews + the actual Season 2 teaser trailer for Hook as a character.... He wasn't originally planned to be the character we got. This would also explain why his character is all over the place in terms of what he's doing this season and the flippy flopping that happening when it comes to if he's a villain or not. If he's actually two different characters combined into one, the messy writing makes a little more sense.

one thing i’d like to add is that the seer doesn’t actually tell rumple he’ll die in battle. she says his actions in the war will leave his son without a father. he assumes this means he’ll die so he hobbles himself to get sent home but this is leads to him being labelled a deserter coward, milah leaving him, his humiliation leading him to become the dark one and eventually losing baelfire to the land without magic. so it’s one of those very roundabout damned if you do damned if you don’t prophecies i guess
I agree there's no real reason to dive into the ruby werewolf flashback however she does give this incredibly bisexual coded monologue about how her family always wanted her to either be full human or full wolf and snow let her be both and how happy that made her. and no spoilers but the bi thing may come up for ruby again fellow viewers

He may have been 130+ years old, but Baby Yoda is 50 and we still call him a baby. It's never explained and so often poison makes no sense in this show (I'm looking at you season 7) but maybe it has to do with it being dreamshade? Like it should've killed Rumple far quicker given what happens in Season 3, but maybe him being immortal somehow slowed it even without magic since he lived in Storybrooke without magic for 28 years and didn't turn to dust the moment he didn't have the dark one magic to sustain him?
@@lilchaos9212 i'm pretty sure that the poison that hook used is explained to be not a pure dreamshade but like a really powerful and concentrated extract of a dreamshade so yeah i guess his immortality was already doing a lot helping him to survive those few hours. and the dagger doesn't work at all in a world without magic as was shown in season one so him being poisoned in a world without magic by a poison from a separate sort of magical dimension just created some sort of loophole. however it's still a pity that they made us jump through all these hoops and not just state it in the episode

Hell yes! Someone else who loves Regina as much as I do! Regina Mills, my Queen, the love of my life! Her story and her journey is the most interesting through out the show and Lana kills it the whole time. I wore my Evil Regals t-shirt when I met her at Comic Con last year and I have never been so nervous but it was amazing. Still can't believe that happened.

I'm literally only 5 minutes in but you started to talk about Ginny and Josh becoming a couple irl and announcing it around the time of S2, so I wanted to tell you a story here - around the time of the S4 premiere, I was in Vancouver on a mini-trip and missed a dinner reservation my then-bf had made for us to celebrate our anniversary. I was bummed because we missed it and I was looking forward to it so much so he said "I mean, we can still try to go! It'll probably be a wait since our table res was over an hour ago." So off we went - super late - walking to the restaurant. The ENTIRE WALK THERE (I mean that) I spent talking to him about the OUAT new season that was premiering and I'm not even kidding, I had the premiere in my phone's calendar so I wouldn't miss it. We finally get to the restaurant and they actually HELD our table for us even though we were genuinely over an hour late and so we were sat right away. But that wasn't the best part. No, the best part was the fact that I turned my head to the left and JOSH AND GINNY WERE RIGHT THERE. They were having dinner with the show's creators Adam and Eric and the restaurant was such a small little italian place so the tables were just insanely close to each other. Naturally, I freaking out internally (not wanting to cause a scene) so I grabbed my menu and not-so-sneakily told my then-bf the absolutely insanity that was happening to me right then and there and he kept telling me to chill out and not say anything so I didn't. I spent my entire dinner just doing my best to keep my head forward and stay as normal as possible. It was at the end of our dinner (they had finished a bit earlier than us cause they were there before us) but they were chilling and eating dessert. Josh had his 3rd? glass of wine by then and Ginny was pregnant so she was obviously sober. Adam/Eric were also drinking. Ginny goes off to the bathroom and then Josh turns to ME and says "Would you like a picture? I can tell you've been wanting to talk to us but you waited until after dinner and we really appreciate that." to which I absolutely died at and immediately said yes and got a picture with everyone (except Ginny who kindly asked not to bc she just wasn't feeling well which I of course didn't push her on). But it was SO funny because it was clear that Josh was very tipsy and Adam and Eric were as well so poor Ginny had to be like "Guess I'm the one ordering the taxi again!" and we all talked for like an hour while they ate their dessert and we finished our dinner, and then they left, and even paid for mine and then-bf's entire dinner!! I can genuinely say that Ginny/Josh's relationship was always super sweet and they were both some of the nicest people I've ever met. I was even able to gush and fangirl with Adam and Eric about their show and I complimented them and said how much I loved OUAT. They were also incredibly nice and it was just a 100/100 experience of my life. Okay back to watching your video. :)

I guess we can't get different actors for either of them" and then they stuck glasses on Jennifer and called it good enough

watching this show felt like reading game of thrones. just dragging myself through like ten storylines at once, keeping track of family trees, crying, forgetting everyone's names because they all have so many goddamn names.
regina is my favorite character and it's so painful to see her falling into old patterns over and over. i relate too much to her pain, to her relationship with her mother, i desperately want her to be happy and heal. season two was so hard to watch.
my favourite thing about this show is how fictional characters pop up like cameos in a Marvel movie. Like "hmm this person with no backstory is ALSO from the enchanted forest", everyones an X-Man and i love it.
The flashback of Snow White getting the fertility curse is so funny when so much of the show hinges on the rule that true loves kiss can cure any curse

the entire "emma as a 17 year old" flashback is super funny to me (from the inherent comedy of these very adult people pretending to be kids) but the thing that sent me was the face pineoccio makes when neal hands him the money.
can i just say the opening scene to season 2 is genuinely amazing. like a man we've never seen before in new york which hasn't been a relevant location to the show at all and its all handheld and very non once upon a time and then he gets the postcard and it ties it in. and like they don't actively bury the lead throughout the first half of the season if you're paying attention guessing who he is is pretty easy but its so fun i love to have fun!!!
Yeah! I was in the fandom at the very beginning and it was so cool when we were vindicated for the Baelfire theory! It was so much fun. And yeah, Hook gets knocked unconscious so much people joked that the pairing that got the most screentime was Hook x the floor. Also as one of the show's 12 existing fans, I HAVE to know if you're going to be covering Once Upon a Time in Wonderland. I need someone else to be as insane about Will Scarlet's bit in the main series as I am.

It's also kind of ironic that once she got to the non magical world, she decided her purpose was to be a parent. Where if she could've not blamed the child for being tricked she could've had a similar relationship with Snow White.
I think the show makes it out that Regina wanting to be a parent was her way of trying to start over, fill a void. All that vengeance, culminating in casting the Dark Curse, literally is stated to create a void that you won’t be able to fill, so it was her crossing the point of no return and reaping the consequences. So, she tried desperately to fix a problem she created.
it’s also like she’s shown to be a very good mother. her relationship with henry is very strained in season 1 because of the curse of it all but she loves him so much and as the show goes on she’s shown to be a truly great mother. and before snow ‘betrayed’ her she had a genuinely very sweet relationship with her
is it ironic tho, what youre essentially asking is for an abuse victim at the time to suddenly care for and fully nurture a child that her abuser pushed on her, now is it a normal response to keep blaming the child ? idk, but is it weird that regina might not fully be ready to accept snow after finding out snow was part of a plan to kill her bf and chain her to a husband she doesn't love? maybe not
I feel like Lacey as a character had a lot of potential. Using her for a bit longer to build up some tension, then letting her revert to Belle and let Belle confront the knowledge that that darkness is somewhere inside her? But also confronting Gold and being all "You know that isn´t me. Why didn´t you help me earlier, when you knew you could?" I would have loved that.
This show is so unhinged at times and I truly enjoy it. Henry really did take it upon himself to try and fix everything while the adults were having existential dread about who they are. Also never really thought on it but Emma really has a thing for guys over 100 years old. Both her main men are SO MUCH OLDER. Killian being from the 1800's and Neil being an unknowable number due to Neverland but easily over 100 years old.
The thing that gets me is that we’re clearly shown that there are people in Storybrooke who were commoners in the Enchanted Forest, implying that everyone within a certain radius of the curse was sent to Maine. But Storybrooke is constantly called a small town. So… how big was the Enchanted Forest? And there are multiple seemingly unrelated Kings and Queens which implies there were multiple kingdoms. There can’t be like only a few hundred people within a kingdom right? Were there people in these kingdoms that were left behind to sort out themselves while their royals are gone? I have so many questions.
You'd be surprised, I live in a small town with around 4k people. The entire Enchanted Forest population was taken except for Cora's refugees though it's later confirmed that the Enchanted Forest is just a country and not an entire realm
The Seer actually never tells Rumple that he will die in battle! She says the battle will "render his son fatherless", which I think is genius because it comes true either way. Of course Rumple believes that that means he will die (in which case the prophecy would come true), but what actually happens is that through Rumple crippling himself and becoming a coward, he later becomes the dark one, who lets his son slip away, leaving him to grow up fatherless in a different land. So no matter what Rumple would have done, the Seer would have been right, showing that future (or destiny if you will) can't be avoided!!
Your recap of season one made me realize I never watched the rest of it. So I'm now watching it all much to the amusement of my husband who calls it the "weird Rumpelstiltskin show" as we watched the first recap together. It's now made me even more excited to watch these recaps with him so he understands the insanity that is Once Upon a Time.

“Blue Fairy a liar” Actually it’s even worse when you realize that at the time Baelfire had disappeared there were still giants growing said beans, if I remember correctly. Blue did a lot of things that when you ask or notice a certain detail, makes her like sus.
The Blue Fairy reads as sus in such a "Greater Good" sort of way as well it's a shame we don't get more of it. It had great potential for the side of good to become more nuanced or complicated. We see her discourage Grumpy and Nova from pursuing their dreams and each other simply because she thinks she knows Grumpy's nature as a dwarf better than Grumpy. She seems to lie in order to obscure when she's actively choosing to withhold aid, such as with the beans, which makes every other restriction on her magic that also conveniently conveys a moral lesson or makes someone act in a way advantageous to her sus as hell. Actually, she would've made such a great foil to Rumplestiltskin. Her wishes also tend to come with their own unstated strings and conditions attached, if in different ways, and she seems to have her own agenda to the wishes she grants. She ends up with so many powerful people trusting and relying on her, and they're people who are largely in power through her doing. Like, Rumple usually offers a straightforward exchange, or mentors individuals into evil by tempting them with power. But The Blue Fairy ends up a trusted advisor on the council and the authority on magic, and absolute control over all fairy dust. Even in Storybrook, Rumple owns a pawn shop because that sort of business preys on people so desperate they'd sell meaningful or valuable items for a pittance, which reflects the nature of his deals, but the Blue Fairy is made into a religious leader and there's a lot of implications there with how sometimes religious institutions will use charity work to try and convert people when they're very vulnerable, or to reinforce their values in a community, or to gain social or political or economic capital, and how Christianity can have issues with black-and-white views of evil vs good, or impose their theology as "natural" and the way things are. If there's wish-granting magic, it can usually be traced back to Rumplestiltskin(or The Dark One more generally) or her. They seem to be the two big figures in the Enchanted Forest, with one considered Bad and the other Good. Opposing forces. There's even an implied rivalry with Rumplestiltskin "stealing" wishes, what with him not just killing Cinderella's godmother for her wand (who seems to be using fairy magic) but also granting Cinderella's wish. A deal that would've ended with Cinderella, a future QUEEN, in debt to her Fairy Godmother who is likely an agent or somehow related to the Blue Fairy, is taken by Rumplestiltskin.
I stg I don't think anyone ever talked about this at the time the show was airing, but I hated the Blue Fairy. She does all kinds of sus underhanded things and quite frankly never really gets punished for it. There's this very good (but also highkey extremely long) AU fic on ao3 where the author actually addressed this issue with her character and it was so good to get that catharsis of seeing her finally called out by the other characters
Love every recap video you've been doing! Not only is Ginnifer Goodwin Judy Hopps, but Josh Dallas is in Zootopia too! He's a minor character; a pig shop owner that yells at Judy after being robbed by Weasleton, early-ish in the movie. I'd highly recommend looking into Lost; ABC had just finished it, then immediately replaced its space with OUaT. There are an insane amount of Lost references and cast members in Once, throughout all 7 seasons and even the spin-off. Also, Lost is just great!
I actually genuinely enjoy season 2. I’d take it over seasons 5-7 in a heartbeat. Yeah Greg and Tamara are dumb but I have a blast with everything else. Lana Parrilla continues to be the sole reason Regina is a salvageable and somewhat sympathetic figure. The woman acts her ass off. Her and Robert Carlyle. Also, Mulan: Icon. Queen.
Love this show, and love your videos about it! My one complaint about this show (at this point in the show) is that: Instead of combining their cursed selves and enchanted forest selves for their post-curse selves, they’re just their enchanted forest selves. That’s so boring!
I actually mildly disagree with this, and I think it’s actually a worse secret third thing-they take the most flanderized portions of their EF and LWM selves, and become like….bland? Or rather writing wise they aren’t allowed to be complicated or full characters anymore. Maybe this is less them and more the writers acting like they get wiped after every episode. Like instead of being a collection of many colors, they’re all just blended shades of grey brown ?

I would’ve loved a complicated look at Snow and Emma building a relationship while getting to see her mom in her “natural state”(another reason circle-scarfing MM for EF was a choice that could’ve been interesting but wasn’t) of sorts-kind of a long form “your parents were/are just people before being who you know them as now”. They didn’t really go enough into the fact that they were reinstating memories to a body that has entirely different ones, and I would’ve just loved a season about that, even seeing Snow go back to EF would be healing in many ways to reconnect both her identities. But alas lmao
I've never felt more relief than when you said you loved Henry's dad because I DO TOO!!!! I would totally understand if you didn't but its always nice to know someone shares the same opinion/feelings as you on a character you brainrot over and get in the feels thinking about him everytime you rewatch the show.

Some thoughts I had while watching (SPOILERS ahead for further seasons): Funnily enough Fhilip, Aurora and Mulan may not be a throuple but they are a love triangle. It's just that it's not Philip with two girls in love with him. It's Aurora with Philip and Mulan both in love with her. We will see more of Lancelot later. in fact we'll see the rest of the knights and king Arthur himself. in Maine. We will see king Arthur in Maine. Mother Superior does technically have a name. it's Reul Ghorm which just means blue star in Scots Gealic. Which is a whole nother thing. RANT UNLOCKED: The British Isles canonically exist in the enchanted forest. Everyone from Rumplestiltskin's area of origin is British. Rumple and his father are both Scottish. They have Scottish accents (thank you Robert Carlyle for your phenomenal performance)(his father becomes English later on. for reasons) Baelfire calls the Blue Fairy by her Scots Gaelic name. Hook is British (the showrunners didn't want Colin to use his Irish accent) and Milah is English. A version of Britain exist in the Enchanted Forest. And CAMELOT IS NOT A PART OF IT. IT IS IT'S OWN THING! Sure, king Arthur has a British accent. And he rules Camelot. Which is famously in Great Britain. But the OUAT version of Camelot is not in the OUAT version of the British Isles. And neither is Dun Broch by the way. You know, the place where Merida the Scottish princess lives? Not at all connected to where Rumplestiltskin with his Scottish accent and Scots Gaelic name for the Blue Fairy is from. RANT OVER And yes the Blue Fairy is a liar. She lied about the number of people who can go through the wardrobe. She lied about the last bean. She lied to Rumple telling him that there is no curse that could transport him to the Land Without Magic despite being present when the dark curse was created. And of course she lied when she said that fairies don't lie. And oh boy, if you're upset about Frankenstein being there just you wait for Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Now that one's something. Something good? it's something. And don't forget the rest of the crew from your high school reading list: Captain Nemo from Moby Dick, the count of Monte Cristo from The Count Of Monte Cristo and Beowulf. You know. From Beowulf. And yes, Cora's plan depended on Rumplestiltskin going to therapy. Which is really funny but what's even funnier is that he did. He did go to therapy. I assume most people here know about all of this already but if you've never watched the show or never watched it to the end? Yeah, it get worse. Which is great! But also not good. But I'm obsessed. I cannot wait for the Neverland arc, I am so excited for it.
two thoughts i had once we started talking about dr. whale being frankenstein and his backstory: 1) how does mary shelley fit into all this? like i know they all came from written stories, but i'm extra curious about what her deal is supposed to be, considering frankenstein is so recent in the span of history (though i suppose the same thing applies to the wonderland crew and lewis carroll at this point in the show) 2) why ONLY frankenstein? presumably part of why he's there is that it's in the public domain, but what about the other classic stories from that era? we eventually get jekyll and hyde but like...what about...a certain other...19th century monster novel...basically what i'm saying is i think i would have been more inclined to accept dr. whale's presence in the story if dracula was also there.
we do find out much much later in the show about the concept of ‘the authors’ which as someone who hasn’t watched in a veryyyy long time and only had a vague memory of it is that they’re people from our world who found out about the stories from the enchanted forest and other realms and documented them. like an ‘author’ wrote henry’s book of fairy tales and that becomes a key plot, and it’s canon that walt disney was one of these authors so i guess we can assume that so was mary shelley? and i guess dracula was just a fully made up imagined story like not all stories are real i guess.
Honestly, I think they just wanted a famous Dr and Victor Frankenstein is more famous than Dr Jekyll. If they’d gotten the rights to Sherlock Holmes, they probably would’ve made Dr Whale be Dr Watson and been buddies with Sheriff Graham (Holmes). Which also, given Holmes’ disdain for police in the books, it would be his personal hell to be a bumbling sheriff himself, but those rights are expensive expensive and BBC was already working on Sherlock and CBS had Elementary, plus those movies, the estate might not’ve even wanted this little ABCFamily show to have him as a side character? I do wish they would’ve explored The Land Without Color more, but I’m betting WB had those rights the show would’ve wanted tied up because WB was planning their own Monster Cinematic Universe at that time…

I actually remembered quite a lot of this season but I didn't remember the timeline even close to correctly. I thought Cora was around for a lot longer. I do agree this is the most interesting Snow ever gets. I also thought the show went a little longer before it went off the rails, but I watched it as it came out and I was 10 when season one aired so I'm not surprised I misremembered.
Cora is his step-great-great grandmother, his adoptive grandmother, & if i had it my way, his grandmother in law. The showrunners were COWARDS for the energy between Emma & Regina not resulting in a messy sapphic relationship & i will stand by it

To be fair he technically isn't. As far as we know Hook and Milah never got married and when Hook presents the option to Baelfire he turns him down very harshly. So at most he was his moms boyfriend/guardian. Though I do agree that it make the family tree much funnier 😂

I think the reason Rumple keeps making deals where the cost is giving up ya baby is because of his deep guilt and self-loathing at the fact that he chose magic and power over being with Bae and now it comes out all twisted with him always trying to prove that any parent would give up their child for the right price.. and they kinda do be choosing their needs and desires over keeping their kids lol.
I think it's the opposite. That he believes that he's better than other parents because they give theirs up willingly while he lost Baelfire unwillingly

A part of me thinks that a lot of Jefferson's characteristics and plots ended up being combined with Killian's. From reading some of the creators interviews + the actual Season 2 teaser trailer for Hook as a character.... He wasn't originally planned to be the character we got. This would also explain why his character is all over the place in terms of what he's doing this season and the flippy flopping that happening when it comes to if he's a villain or not. If he's actually two different characters combined into one, the messy writing makes a little more sense.
I think they also wrote him out because he broke up with Jennifer Morrison lol

one thing i’d like to add is that the seer doesn’t actually tell rumple he’ll die in battle. she says his actions in the war will leave his son without a father. he assumes this means he’ll die so he hobbles himself to get sent home but this is leads to him being labelled a deserter coward, milah leaving him, his humiliation leading him to become the dark one and eventually losing baelfire to the land without magic. so it’s one of those very roundabout damned if you do damned if you don’t prophecies i guess

It's never explained and so often poison makes no sense in this show (I'm looking at you season 7) but maybe it has to do with it being dreamshade? Like it should've killed Rumple far quicker given what happens in Season 3, but maybe him being immortal somehow slowed it even without magic since he lived in Storybrooke without magic for 28 years and didn't turn to dust the moment he didn't have the dark one magic to sustain him?
@@lilchaos9212 i'm pretty sure that the poison that hook used is explained to be not a pure dreamshade but like a really powerful and concentrated extract of a dreamshade so yeah i guess his immortality was already doing a lot helping him to survive those few hours. and the dagger doesn't work at all in a world without magic as was shown in season one so him being poisoned in a world without magic by a poison from a separate sort of magical dimension just created some sort of loophole. however it's still a pity that they made us jump through all these hoops and not just state it in the episode

Hell yes! Someone else who loves Regina as much as I do! Regina Mills, my Queen, the love of my life! Her story and her journey is the most interesting through out the show and Lana kills it the whole time. I wore my Evil Regals t-shirt when I met her at Comic Con last year and I have never been so nervous but it was amazing. Still can't believe that happened.

I'm literally only 5 minutes in but you started to talk about Ginny and Josh becoming a couple irl and announcing it around the time of S2, so I wanted to tell you a story here - around the time of the S4 premiere, I was in Vancouver on a mini-trip and missed a dinner reservation my then-bf had made for us to celebrate our anniversary. I was bummed because we missed it and I was looking forward to it so much so he said "I mean, we can still try to go! It'll probably be a wait since our table res was over an hour ago." So off we went - super late - walking to the restaurant. The ENTIRE WALK THERE (I mean that) I spent talking to him about the OUAT new season that was premiering and I'm not even kidding, I had the premiere in my phone's calendar so I wouldn't miss it. We finally get to the restaurant and they actually HELD our table for us even though we were genuinely over an hour late and so we were sat right away. But that wasn't the best part. No, the best part was the fact that I turned my head to the left and JOSH AND GINNY WERE RIGHT THERE. They were having dinner with the show's creators Adam and Eric and the restaurant was such a small little italian place so the tables were just insanely close to each other. Naturally, I freaking out internally (not wanting to cause a scene) so I grabbed my menu and not-so-sneakily told my then-bf the absolutely insanity that was happening to me right then and there and he kept telling me to chill out and not say anything so I didn't. I spent my entire dinner just doing my best to keep my head forward and stay as normal as possible. It was at the end of our dinner (they had finished a bit earlier than us cause they were there before us) but they were chilling and eating dessert. Josh had his 3rd? glass of wine by then and Ginny was pregnant so she was obviously sober. Adam/Eric were also drinking. Ginny goes off to the bathroom and then Josh turns to ME and says "Would you like a picture? I can tell you've been wanting to talk to us but you waited until after dinner and we really appreciate that." to which I absolutely died at and immediately said yes and got a picture with everyone (except Ginny who kindly asked not to bc she just wasn't feeling well which I of course didn't push her on). But it was SO funny because it was clear that Josh was very tipsy and Adam and Eric were as well so poor Ginny had to be like "Guess I'm the one ordering the taxi again!" and we all talked for like an hour while they ate their dessert and we finished our dinner, and then they left, and even paid for mine and then-bf's entire dinner!! I can genuinely say that Ginny/Josh's relationship was always super sweet and they were both some of the nicest people I've ever met. I was even able to gush and fangirl with Adam and Eric about their show and I complimented them and said how much I loved OUAT. They were also incredibly nice and it was just a 100/100 experience of my life.

Oh this recap was fantastic. When Hook arrived tumblr exploded, him and his eyeliner owned tumblr for a while. Funfact I went as Hook for Halloween and omg the eyeliner was so hard to get right. I just settled for slightly raccoonish.
It's also kind of ironic that once she got to the non magical world, she decided her purpose was to be a parent. Where if she could've not blamed the child for being tricked she could've had a similar relationship with Snow White.
I think the show makes it out that Regina wanting to be a parent was her way of trying to start over, fill a void. All that vengeance, culminating in casting the Dark Curse, literally is stated to create a void that you won’t be able to fill, so it was her crossing the point of no return and reaping the consequences. So, she tried desperately to fix a problem she created.
it’s also like she’s shown to be a very good mother. her relationship with henry is very strained in season 1 because of the curse of it all but she loves him so much and as the show goes on she’s shown to be a truly great mother. and before snow ‘betrayed’ her she had a genuinely very sweet relationship with her
is it ironic tho, what youre essentially asking is for an abuse victim at the time to suddenly care for and fully nurture a child that her abuser pushed on her, now is it a normal response to keep blaming the child ? idk, but is it weird that regina might not fully be ready to accept snow after finding out snow was part of a plan to kill her bf and chain her to a husband she doesn't love? maybe not
I feel like Lacey as a character had a lot of potential. Using her for a bit longer to build up some tension, then letting her revert to Belle and let Belle confront the knowledge that that darkness is somewhere inside her? But also confronting Gold and being all "You know that isn´t me. Why didn´t you help me earlier, when you knew you could?" I would have loved that.

This show is so unhinged at times and I truly enjoy it. Henry really did take it upon himself to try and fix everything while the adults were having existential dread about who they are.
Also never really thought on it but Emma really has a thing for guys over 100 years old. Both her main men are SO MUCH OLDER. Killian being from the 1800's and Neil being an unknowable number due to Neverland but easily over 100 years old.
The thing that gets me is that we’re clearly shown that there are people in Storybrooke who were commoners in the Enchanted Forest, implying that everyone within a certain radius of the curse was sent to Maine. But Storybrooke is constantly called a small town. So… how big was the Enchanted Forest? And there are multiple seemingly unrelated Kings and Queens which implies there were multiple kingdoms. There can’t be like only a few hundred people within a kingdom right? Were there people in these kingdoms that were left behind to sort out themselves while their royals are gone? I have so many questions.

The entire Enchanted Forest population was taken except for Cora's refugees though it's later confirmed that the Enchanted Forest is just a country and not an entire realm
The Seer actually never tells Rumple that he will die in battle! She says the battle will "render his son fatherless", which I think is genius because it comes true either way. Of course Rumple believes that that means he will die (in which case the prophecy would come true), but what actually happens is that through Rumple crippling himself and becoming a coward, he later becomes the dark one, who lets his son slip away, leaving him to grow up fatherless in a different land. So no matter what Rumple would have done, the Seer would have been right, showing that future (or destiny if you will) can't be avoided!!
Your recap of season one made me realize I never watched the rest of it. So I'm now watching it all much to the amusement of my husband who calls it the "weird Rumpelstiltskin show" as we watched the first recap together. It's now made me even more excited to watch these recaps with him so he understands the insanity that is Once Upon a Time.

“Blue Fairy a liar”
Actually it’s even worse when you realize that at the time Baelfire had disappeared there were still giants growing said beans, if I remember correctly. Blue did a lot of things that when you ask or notice a certain detail, makes her like sus.
The Blue Fairy reads as sus in such a "Greater Good" sort of way as well it's a shame we don't get more of it. It had great potential for the side of good to become more nuanced or complicated. We see her discourage Grumpy and Nova from pursuing their dreams and each other simply because she thinks she knows Grumpy's nature as a dwarf better than Grumpy. She seems to lie in order to obscure when she's actively choosing to withhold aid, such as with the beans, which makes every other restriction on her magic that also conveniently conveys a moral lesson or makes someone act in a way advantageous to her sus as hell.
Actually, she would've made such a great foil to Rumplestiltskin. Her wishes also tend to come with their own unstated strings and conditions attached, if in different ways, and she seems to have her own agenda to the wishes she grants. She ends up with so many powerful people trusting and relying on her, and they're people who are largely in power through her doing. Like, Rumple usually offers a straightforward exchange, or mentors individuals into evil by tempting them with power. But The Blue Fairy ends up a trusted advisor on the council and the authority on magic, and absolute control over all fairy dust. Even in Storybrook, Rumple owns a pawn shop because that sort of business preys on people so desperate they'd sell meaningful or valuable items for a pittance, which reflects the nature of his deals, but the Blue Fairy is made into a religious leader and there's a lot of implications there with how sometimes religious institutions will use charity work to try and convert people when they're very vulnerable, or to reinforce their values in a community, or to gain social or political or economic capital, and how Christianity can have issues with black-and-white views of evil vs good, or impose their theology as "natural" and the way things are.
If there's wish-granting magic, it can usually be traced back to Rumplestiltskin(or The Dark One more generally) or her. They seem to be the two big figures in the Enchanted Forest, with one considered Bad and the other Good. Opposing forces. There's even an implied rivalry with Rumplestiltskin "stealing" wishes, what with him not just killing Cinderella's godmother for her wand (who seems to be using fairy magic) but also granting Cinderella's wish. A deal that would've ended with Cinderella, a future QUEEN, in debt to her Fairy Godmother who is likely an agent or somehow related to the Blue Fairy, is taken by Rumplestiltskin.
I stg I don't think anyone ever talked about this at the time the show was airing, but I hated the Blue Fairy. She does all kinds of sus underhanded things and quite frankly never really gets punished for it. There's this very good (but also highkey extremely long) AU fic on ao3 where the author actually addressed this issue with her character and it was so good to get that catharsis of seeing her finally called out by the other characters

Not only is Ginnifer Goodwin Judy Hopps, but Josh Dallas is in Zootopia too! He's a minor character; a pig shop owner that yells at Judy after being robbed by Weasleton, early-ish in the movie.
I'd highly recommend looking into Lost; ABC had just finished it, then immediately replaced its space with OUaT. There are an insane amount of Lost references and cast members in Once, throughout all 7 seasons and even the spin-off. Also, Lost is just great!

I actually genuinely enjoy season 2. I’d take it over seasons 5-7 in a heartbeat. Yeah Greg and Tamara are dumb but I have a blast with everything else. Lana Parrilla continues to be the sole reason Regina is a salvageable and somewhat sympathetic figure. The woman acts her ass off. Her and Robert Carlyle. Also, Mulan: Icon. Queen.
Love this show, and love your videos about it! My one complaint about this show (at this point in the show) is that:
Instead of combining their cursed selves and enchanted forest selves for their post-curse selves, they’re just their enchanted forest selves. That’s so boring!
I actually mildly disagree with this, and I think it’s actually a worse secret third thing-they take the most flanderized portions of their EF and LWM selves, and become like….bland? Or rather writing wise they aren’t allowed to be complicated or full characters anymore. Maybe this is less them and more the writers acting like they get wiped after every episode. Like instead of being a collection of many colors, they’re all just blended shades of grey brown ?
I mean ... they still seem to do their real word jobs. Jiminy is still a therapist, for example.

That’s what I mean by most flanderized, her hyper-morality, David’s heroism(despite actually being way more complicated than that and….literally the person who did not want to be the princely hero), etc. Even Gold is just…a new thing? I would’ve loved a complicated look at Snow and Emma building a relationship while getting to see her mom in her “natural state”(another reason circle-scarfing MM for EF was a choice that could’ve been interesting but wasn’t) of sorts-kind of a long form “your parents were/are just people before being who you know them as now”. They didn’t really go enough into the fact that they were reinstating memories to a body that has entirely different ones, and I would’ve just loved a season about that, even seeing Snow go back to EF would be healing in many ways to reconnect both her identities. But alas lmao

I've never felt more relief than when you said you loved Henry's dad because I DO TOO!!!! I would totally understand if you didn't but its always nice to know someone shares the same opinion/feelings as you on a character you brainrot over and get in the feels thinking about him everytime you rewatch the show.

You say that no one remembers this season, but tbh I'm surprised with how much this season had. I can't believe that Hook and Mulan and Baelfire were all in season 2! I could've sworn that those were in later seasons. This season was jam packed for real
Some thoughts I had while watching (SPOILERS ahead for further seasons):
Funnily enough Fhilip, Aurora and Mulan may not be a throuple but they are a love triangle. It's just that it's not Philip with two girls in love with him. It's Aurora with Philip and Mulan both in love with her.
We will see more of Lancelot later. in fact we'll see the rest of the knights and king Arthur himself. in Maine. We will see king Arthur in Maine.
Mother Superior does technically have a name. it's Reul Ghorm which just means blue star in Scots Gealic. Which is a whole nother thing. RANT UNLOCKED: The British Isles canonically exist in the enchanted forest. Everyone from Rumplestiltskin's area of origin is British. Rumple and his father are both Scottish. They have Scottish accents (thank you Robert Carlyle for your phenomenal performance)(his father becomes English later on. for reasons) Baelfire calls the Blue Fairy by her Scots Gaelic name. Hook is British (the showrunners didn't want Colin to use his Irish accent) and Milah is English. A version of Britain exist in the Enchanted Forest. And CAMELOT IS NOT A PART OF IT. IT IS IT'S OWN THING! Sure, king Arthur has a British accent. And he rules Camelot. Which is famously in Great Britain. But the OUAT version of Camelot is not in the OUAT version of the British Isles. And neither is Dun Broch by the way. You know, the place where Merida the Scottish princess lives? Not at all connected to where Rumplestiltskin with his Scottish accent and Scots Gaelic name for the Blue Fairy is from. RANT OVER
And yes the Blue Fairy is a liar. She lied about the number of people who can go through the wardrobe. She lied about the last bean. She lied to Rumple telling him that there is no curse that could transport him to the Land Without Magic despite being present when the dark curse was created. And of course she lied when she said that fairies don't lie.
And oh boy, if you're upset about Frankenstein being there just you wait for Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Now that one's something. Something good? it's something. And don't forget the rest of the crew from your high school reading list: Captain Nemo from Moby Dick, the count of Monte Cristo from The Count Of Monte Cristo and Beowulf. You know. From Beowulf.
And yes, Cora's plan depended on Rumplestiltskin going to therapy. Which is really funny but what's even funnier is that he did. He did go to therapy.
I assume most people here know about all of this already but if you've never watched the show or never watched it to the end? Yeah, it get worse. Which is great! But also not good. But I'm obsessed. I cannot wait for the Neverland arc, I am so excited for it.
two thoughts i had once we started talking about dr. whale being frankenstein and his backstory:
1) how does mary shelley fit into all this? like i know they all came from written stories, but i'm extra curious about what her deal is supposed to be, considering frankenstein is so recent in the span of history (though i suppose the same thing applies to the wonderland crew and lewis carroll at this point in the show)
2) why ONLY frankenstein? presumably part of why he's there is that it's in the public domain, but what about the other classic stories from that era? we eventually get jekyll and hyde but like...what about...a certain other...19th century monster novel...basically what i'm saying is i think i would have been more inclined to accept dr. whale's presence in the story if dracula was also there.

we do find out much much later in the show about the concept of ‘the authors’ which as someone who hasn’t watched in a veryyyy long time and only had a vague memory of it is that they’re people from our world who found out about the stories from the enchanted forest and other realms and documented them. like an ‘author’ wrote henry’s book of fairy tales and that becomes a key plot, and it’s canon that walt disney was one of these authors so i guess we can assume that so was mary shelley? and i guess dracula was just a fully made up imagined story like not all stories are real i guess.
Don't you worry, they'll adress all the other recent characters. Eventually. I think season 5? Not sure.

Honestly, I think they just wanted a famous Dr and Victor Frankenstein is more famous than Dr Jekyll. If they’d gotten the rights to Sherlock Holmes, they probably would’ve made Dr Whale be Dr Watson and been buddies with Sheriff Graham (Holmes). Which also, given Holmes’ disdain for police in the books, it would be his personal hell to be a bumbling sheriff himself, but those rights are expensive expensive and BBC was already working on Sherlock and CBS had Elementary, plus those movies, the estate might not’ve even wanted this little ABCFamily show to have him as a side character? I do wish they would’ve explored The Land Without Color more, but I’m betting WB had those rights the show would’ve wanted tied up because WB was planning their own Monster Cinematic Universe at that time…

I actually remembered quite a lot of this season but I didn't remember the timeline even close to correctly. I thought Cora was around for a lot longer. I do agree this is the most interesting Snow ever gets. I also thought the show went a little longer before it went off the rails, but I watched it as it came out and I was 10 when season one aired so I'm not surprised I misremembered.
