- Follow along as John Mccann a ex NZFS deer culler organises the lads to re-build the Winchcombe Bivi, a old Tararua biv that was removed in the late 1980s.
We also fit in a hunt and I shoot my first Tararua stag.
Its about a10hr walk to the biv from either side so if thats a bit much contact Amalgamated Helicopters to give you a ride.

And If you have a hut or track that needs some attention in your local area and are willing to volunteer your time contact the Back Country Trust to help you get it organised.

Magic looking spot bro. Great work team🤙🤙
Awesome stuff Muz, and choice to see Milo helping out with the crew 🙌 he’s a hard case alright 😂 congrats on another fantastic project to give hunters and hikers a safe and humble abode! That bush ridge in the background looks epic 👍

Ka pai te mahi Muzz
Whare looks mean bro. Group of bloody legends.
Good to see John. I recall scrambling down Winchcombe ridge in a storm with Wrecka to rescue a party of five back in 95. Got them out ok but this project will be a safe haven when it shits in for sure. BTW,thanks for the ride out of Penn Creek to fields hut when you were out with Skull in Duncan's 500. Hope you enjoyed the bottle of Jack.
Good buggers. That is exactly what we need more of. I will happily help with another one (quite a bit of helo underslung exp, can use a hammer) but without Instagram or Facebook is there a website somewhere re. these sorts of endeavours?
Yeah mate, if you look in the video description there’s a link to the back country trust (BCT) they fund and help organise a lot of this type of work and are always interested in skilled volunteers.
Well done lads. Didn't version No 2 go into the head waters of the Hutt river, still with the log book in it ? I seem to remember that it did.
Yep Renata forks is where it ended up
You've put together a great wee doco there. Well done! Back in the NZFS days there were 65 huts in the Tararuas. ALL of them a welcome sight in typical clagged out, howling gale weather usually dished out. But on a perfect day....its hard to beat :)
Well done. No mucking around just a bunch of good bastards getting on with it. Respect
Good effort guys. One of my favourite bivys. I've been glade to see Ver 1 several times in the 70's.
Inspiring stuff mate, well done to everyone involved stuff like this really makes you proud to be a hunter.
Thanks for the vid Muzz. Great project by all involved, these biv's and huts are a fantastic asset to have. Really enjoy your content mate, keep up the good work!
O for Awesome 😁 Solid effort to all the lads involved with that. Too much!! 🤙👍
An awesome project to be involved in. Great work mate and hopefully DOC look after it instead of removing it......again.
Great work and another really inspiring video. Will have to plan a mission to the Tararuas to check the place out.
Bloody good stuff Muz. The guys did a great job with that hut.Well done. That buck was a nice pickup. I did wonder if you were going to make it up that hill it looked like a fair lifter of a beast. Thanks for the video mate. take it easy.
"Doc I suppose" Ha! reluctant praise it seems John? Good on ya. I was in the first one with Gary Hansen we stayed a couple of nights at least on a particular trip, he was showing me the ropes. Fond memories.
Good to see one put back.
Awesome guys.👍
Outstanding work guys 👍👍. Can you give me a call following up from our convo @ the pre duck shoot..... Cheers
Yeah mate sorry will do that right now.
What a great video and what an awesome project! Wish I lived closer so I could visit the place.
Mate. There were some legends there! That JD sure is a great bloke and a very skilful pilot. Great video too Muz, you were set up with that stag!
Haha that was my own doing bro, just wanted to be a hero and bit off more than I could handle haha.
Good on ya mate! Bloody great work you and the team have done there. Enjoyed it, mad respect! Cheers!
Awesome video bro!! What msr tent do you use?
Hubba hubba 2man, it’s good but I haven’t taken it in real nasty weather. Roomy for 1 pretty tight for 2.
Great job boyz!
Great you were involved in another bivvy rebuild Josh, and with some legendary Tararua men. Huge cudos to John McCann and all the team.
Great Team effort. Well done. Stag as well bloody awesome. That hut will offer shelter for decades.
Excellent work guys, great to see familiar faces - legends of the tararuas.
excellent!
Thats awesome bro!!
Nice one mate great effort from you all ..
Epic video mate! Pretty cool you were able to video and share the whole process. 👏
Bloody awesome, what a great effort. Will be well used in the future
Awesome! Did you not see that mouse on the bush edge?
Brilliant work by all involved 👍😎😎😎
well done very very cool
Brilliant!!! & that’s what it’s all about folks!!! 😎
O for awesome all right.
Awesome mahi fellas!!!
Great effort guys well done!
Wiked bro...love your mahi
What a great thing to do! Good on ya.
Top stuff guys. Great to see it
Awesome work from all involved!!
I think the new model of giving a volunteer trust the money for maintenance and construction of backcountry huts seems to be working very well, especially for these lesser used ones. They get a lot more done with the same money than DOC can paying for all the labor and bureaucracy.
It also encourages more respect of the facilities, knowing that it's volunteers making all this available, instead a faceless government agency.
Nice work fellas, 👍🏽
bloody good effort guys, love the poem
LEGEND
Awesome good stuff Muzz!

❤️💪🏾🤙🏾
Orsome job boys ! Well done.
Awesome work team
Bloody awesome Muzz. I couldn’t help notice you weren’t seen on the end of a shovel, are those days behind you?
Haha yeah bro, Im now that guy just mincing around with a notebook/camera.
@@Muzz308 Sounds like you’ve become an officer
😅
Mean 👍👍
Pretty sure I came across the ribcage of that stag around July 2021 after a snow
Yeah, A bit embarrassing. I didn't know I was on a track when we broke him down. Your not the first person to mention it though.
@@Muzz308 Nah she all good. Wasn't my finest tramp, I was totally buggered by the time I got to those pinnacles beyond Winchcombe and double-backed to the little crib. Beauty - you fullas saved me a night out in the snow. Much appreciated.
Keeping our history alive. well done.
