Crocodiles Bite The Face Off Zebra While Crossing Mara River on a Safari in Kenya

  • Recently, I was on a Safari at Masai Mara National Park in Kenya this year for the “Great Wildebeest Migration”. Every year during the season of the Great Migration the zebras must take the risk of crossing many rivers in order to get to the grass that they badly need in order to survive. If the zebras do not get to their source of food they may perish. Sometimes, after crossing a river full of hungry crocodiles, the zebras do not find good grass on the other side. Then they will turn around and go back through the same river to face the vicious crocodiles all over again. My Safari guide was a local I met named Jonathan Lenjir. Jonathan was such an amazing guide. He is a Masai Warrior from the Masai tribe in Kenya.
    My great joy in life is travel and sharing my travel experiences with others - the good and the bad. If you look at my videos you can see that I try to show extraordinary and beautiful things, even in harsh conditions. I originally posted this video, in particular, because it shows the amazing and strong will of the animals of Masai Mara National Reserve to live, something many of the viewers picked up on.
    I did feel very bad for the suffering that the zebra went through. It was very difficult to watch and witness in person. In no way do I wish to disrespect this zebra by showing the fight. She was so very strong, she fought against 4 crocodiles and was still standing. I will never forget how hard this zebra fought for her life and did not give up easily. It makes me feel an even greater respect for life and all living things. Life is so fragile and precious. This happens every day in the wild where no one can see the intense struggle to live that goes on.
    One viewer called the zebra in this video "Zebra-heart," like Brave-heart. That's exactly what I was trying to show! Masai Mara National Reserve, like many of the wild places left in this world, is beautiful and harsh - just like life.
    It was hard to watch the zebra fight and do nothing. However there was no way I could have tried to save the Zebra from her death. The Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya does not permit interference and no guns are permitted into the park.

    There have been many comments suggesting a bridge be built for the zebras to cross the river I understand your sympathy for the zebra. However, the other side of the river is the country of Tanzania. So, it would have to be an international bridge. Also, the Masai Mara wildlife park is trying to stay as natural as possible without creating man-made structures such as bridges. In addition, there are many other rivers the zebras must cross to get to their food source. Should there be bridges built everywhere for the zebras to use? Kenya is a 3rd world county with many other issues that should take priority over building bridges for zebras. Crocodiles can lay and wait on bridges too.
    Also, if the crocodiles all starve and die it will throw off the balance of nature.
    I know people believe zebras are cute and most people don't find crocodiles to be beautiful. That doesn't mean that crocodiles are evil and zebras are good. Thank you for watching

      I've had to point out that zebras are also not so sweet animals that will kick and bite. Everything you said was right on and thanks for sharing the video on the reality of life. Pet owners need to look at their own animals on how "savage" their precious animals can be to other animals that can fall prey to them. I find crocodiles and alligators fascinating and they are definitely an animal you want to respect on keep your distance.

      Aw, I like that you pointed out that crocodiles aren't evil and zebras aren't good by default. They're really just doing what they can to survive. Because this animal is stupid. It is obvious that even the dumbest person would never find himself in such a situation, and if a person found himself in such a situation, he would give up, not because the person is weak, but because the person is smart enough to make the decision to die. Humans would sacrifice even more lives if necessary to take revenge; most animals are incapable of this, and are even incapable of accepting their own death.

    Sorry the video was so shaky. I am not a professional photographer. I basically just pulled my cell phone out of my pocket and started recording. But it does make the footage even more amazing that it got so many millions of views. National Geographic would love to get such video. I'm sure they carry around tens of thousands of dollars of equipment. I did not have an expensive camera like large professional productions use. There was also a lot going on during the filming. The wind was blowing, and we had been waiting out in the sun for many, many hours. I was kind of exhausted and sort of balancing on the top of the truck. There was nowhere to put a camera stand. Every breath I took shook the phone. At times I was holding my breath for long periods trying not to move the phone/camera. I actually could not even see what I was shooting at because of the sun. I was just recording blindly in the direction of the action. Only afterwards when I was looking closely at the video did I clearly see the entire animal attack.

    There have been many comments suggesting a bridge be built for the zebras to cross the river I understand your sympathy for the zebra. However, the other side of the river is the country of Tanzania. So, it would have to be an international bridge between the countries of Kenya and Tanzania. Also, the Masai Mara wildlife park is trying to stay as natural as possible without creating man-made structures such as bridges. In addition, there are many other rivers the zebras must cross to get to their food source. Should there be bridges built everywhere for the zebras to use? You would need to build a bridge every few hundred feet for hundreds of miles. Even then the animals might not choose to even use the bridge. The Crocodiles can also lay and wait on top of bridges too. Kenya is a 3rd world county with many other issues that should take priority over building bridges for zebras.
    Also, if the crocodiles all starve and die it will throw off the balance of nature. It would have tragic consequences.
    I know people believe zebras are cute and most people don't find crocodiles to be beautiful. That doesn't mean that crocodiles are evil and zebras are good. Thank you for watching.

    Geez that ending just broke my heart. It was a baby that had the misfortune of bumping into a croc, it tried to get away. When it couldn't it tried biting in self defense and that croc caught his mouth 😭 then the kid was crying then the croc did a death roll on its face ripping off its nose and jaw off. Poor thing, geez then it was just looking around in shock one last time then laid down and all the crocs got it. Imagine the pain it felt underwater being ripped apart alive.
    This mades me actually feel something, and its shock & saddening.

      We often talk of man's "bestial" cruelty, but this is terribly unjust and insulting to beasts: a wild animal can never be as cruel as man, as artistic, as refined in his cruelty. The crocodile mauls and tears its prey because that is all it knows. It would never enter its head to leave people all night nailed by their ears, even if it could do it. There were people , incidentally, that took a sadistic pleasure in torturing children, starting with cutting them out of their mothers' wombs with a dagger, and going so far as to throw babes-in-arms into the air and impale them on the points of their bayonets before their mothers' very eyes. Doing it before the mothers' eyes was what gave it particular piquancy. But here is one example that I find quite fascinating. Picture the scene: an infant in the arms of its trembling mother, surrounded by the several enemy soldiers. They have thought up an amusing game: they caress the child, laugh to make it laugh; they succeed, the child laughs. At just that moment one of them aims his pistol at the child, six inches from its face. The child chuckles gleefully, holds out its little hands to grab the pistol, and suddenly the evil joker discharges the pistol full in its face and blows its little head to pieces... Now tell me if any animal would be as artistically as cruel…

      Zebra social structures are not like other horses’, most of which have hierarchical family structures (with the most experienced stallion and mare leading the herd). Most Zebra species have a loose herd structure that’s only together because of safety in numbers, and not necessarily because of social bonds.
      Zebras are also unpredictable and more aggressive than feral horses or horse species that were domesticated. It’s theorized that such behavior developed due to the hunting of zebras by early humans, creating a sort of instinctual fear.

    Fun Fact: A group of zebras can be called a “Dazzle”. This name comes from the dazzling motion effect of a group of running zebras. Some zoologists think zebras use their stripes as camouflage when the heard is in a big group to confuse predators. This makes it more difficult to single out individual zebras to attack. I like that they are called a Dazzle. They are dazzling!

    There is a big poaching problem in Africa. The non-interference policy protects the animals from poachers. Masai Mara does not permit anyone to interfere with the wild animals in the National Reserve.
    Also, it was a far distance. It only appears closer with my cameras zoom lens. First of all, I wasn't about to jump in the water that would certainly be my death. Secondly, I don't I know if I could even throw a rock that far and if I could throw a rock that far I would probably miss and hit a zebra instead of a crocodile. Also, Masai Mara does not permit anyone to interfere with the wild animals in the National Reserve. In addition, my guide would not permit me to throw rocks at the animals. I could not even leave the vehicle to get out and look for rocks. If I left the safety of our vehicle I would be attacked by a wild animal. Thank you for your comments and thank you for watching!

    Thank you so much for your all your questions.

    To clarify the purpose of the crocodile's "Death roll":
    Crocodiles do have extremely powerful jaws that clamp tight on their prey, but they do not have the cutting teeth that we have in the front upper and lower jaws of our mouths. In order to pull a chunk of meat off of their prey, a crocodile twists or rolls its body to tear a piece loose. Animals have had to learn ways to pull apart their prey. This is also why, if you own a dog, that dog will bring its toy to you in its mouth and allow you to pull on that toy while the dog pulls voraciously. Dogs in the wild attack their prey in packs and several of them will pull at a chunk of flesh to tear it into smaller pieces that the dogs can actually eat.
    The crocodiles' death roll is not to drown their prey. Crocodiles do not wait until their prey is dead to start eating its flesh.
    Class dismissed.

    • @B_Brandon
      @B_Brandon 2 роки тому +1

      It all depends. There are situations where the death roll is performed in order to drown the prey and there are also situations where it is performed to pull out a chunk of flesh. Crocs mostly eat their prey when they are already dead. However, there are situations where they may start eating when the prey is still alive. Although it's rare, it still happens from time to time. In short It all depends.

    • @josbar2835
      @josbar2835 2 роки тому +5

      @@B_Brandon Sorry, but you are giving the crocodiles too much credit. yes, they do pull their prey out to the deeper waters, where it is harder for the prey to get away, but the sole purpose of the "death rolls" is to tear away pieces of flesh. Crocs simply do not have the ability to bite off pieces of food the way we do. Spinning their bodies while latching onto a bite of flesh is the only way crocs can tear off a chunk of meat that can be swallowed. Crocs start eating as soon as it is clear that their prey will not escape. They do not care if their prey is alive or dead. Crocs are fairly simple. Why waste any more time than is needed to start feeding? That is Nature.

      Depends on the zebra species. Many species follow loose herd structures, which are only together because of safety in numbers, numbers being a key word here.
      To compare and contrast, while elephant herds will respond to dangers by banding together to protect themselves and their young, zebras will just run away as a whole, but not actually caring for each others’ safety. To put it into human analogy, elephants are when a dangerous person threatens a group of friends, they will try to fight or at least ensure each others’ safety. Zebras are when someone makes a threat and a crowd mindlessly rushes to the exits, fleeing altogether, but putting themselves first and not caring for the people that get trampled or attacked. Of course, the analogy is imperfect since human nature is different, but it should show the contrast quite well.

    Hello, I was the one who filmed the video. I was on top of a Safari vehicle while filming this video in Kenya. I was shooting the video out of the roof of the truck. You cannot leave the vehicle or you will probably be attacked by an animal.
    If you need to use the toilet you have to be driven somewhere safe. Animals are waiting in the tall grass everywhere and will jump out and attack you. Also, I hired a great guide who was protecting me. My guide was always looking to protect me. Typically, the animals will not jump into the truck to attack you. As long as you stay inside of your vehicle you are pretty much safe.
    We had to wait inside of the vehicle for many hours for the zebras to finally decide to cross the Mara River into Tanzania.
