    Great vid, really enjoyed that. Might be a scrubby 4 ptr but better than some lazy 16ptr shot on the back of a farm and carried home on a quad bike. Really impressed how your lab will stay back like that. Buggered if mine will. Look forward to the next vid. Thanks for sharing

      Thanks Rob, Yeah i put in a fair bit of work keeping him steady to the shot and staying for a long period for duckshooting and its transferred over to deer well. Hes not a real hunting dog but good company, if only he didn't sound like a steam train with his panting.

    Epic hunt! There's more to a 'trophy' than just form and points. The effort and the chase all add to a long term memory of a great hunt. Far more than walking half click from the veh and popping a dumb 14 pointer standing in the middle of the track!

    Out of all the NZ hunting footage on YT, I thoroughly enjoy yours the most. Good yarns, great banter, and the odd bit of hunting (haha). Just all round great content, Keep it up! Well deserved head, the journey for that head you will never forget.
    We found a crusty old torch (no batteries included) left at a hut which took 4 D-batteries, was no use to anyone that deep in the bush. Hut wood saw took the ass off it, unscrewed the lens and pulled the guts out to have a roaring horn.

    Only criticism I could make is it would be great if you could level out the audio. ie Raise the volume of the whispering bits to match the rest and lower the volume of the really loud stuff. Otherwise great work for a solo camera man/hunter. Captured it all really well.

    • @petermaguire1490
      @petermaguire1490 3 роки тому +3

      Where I currently live, wasting a hunted animal's meat is not only considered unethical by all hunters, its illegal and you can lose hunting privileges. While I admire your honesty regarding your decision, and I enjoyed your video....the thrill is the hunt, and being out there, and calling in that stag...as you know. why kill that animal and waste the meat? Let it grow to a trophy. Why not just take a photo or perfect your video...I'd still watch and admire even more if you spared the animal and didn't wast the meat. And yes, I understand these animals are introduced in NZ and considered by many as an uncontrolled population of pests. But you say yourself there must not be many deer in the area based on the undergrowth and that you haven't had a successful hunt in 2 years--maybe there aren't so many anymore? 100-200 years ago in the US there was an abundance of game, now hunting is highly regulated and a chance to shoot a bull elk, or buck mule deer can be once in a lifetime. I would hate to see things go in NZ the way they have gone in the US. I am a NZ permanent resident and hunter by the way. I know how hard it is to pack meat out of a place like that. I've passed on easy shots on bull elk because I knew meat would be wasted....take a photo instead. I'd still watch your vids.

    • @Muzz308
      @Muzz308  3 роки тому +3

      Im unsure where you live @Peter Maguire but New Zealand has a very different situation regarding wildlife management compared to the rest of the world. In NZ all mammals are introduced species and our govt has classified them as pests. They poison and shoot thousands of Deer, Pigs, Tahr etc every year and leave them all to rot. There Ideal situation would be that we had no wild game animals and only the native birds and reptiles that lived here before european settlement. Nz is a long way behind the rest of the world in game management and hunters like myself try to promote game as a resource rather than a pest but it is a uphill battle. Thank you for your well structured and mature comment, but it is a pretty complex situation that not many people have a good understanding of other than kiwis who hunt.

    • @Muzz308
      @Muzz308  3 роки тому +2

      @Naresh Clark I don't think you realise how deep in the bush I was mate. In NZ deer are classified as a pest so are shot in massive numbers and left to rot if numbers are not kept under control by recreational ground hunters like myself. Its a pretty complex situation when talking about managing them as a resource vs eliminating them.

    • @patmagee4327
      @patmagee4327 3 роки тому

      @@Muzz308 I really appreciate your response and perspective and thoughtful commentary, and I do have a little bit of understanding of the situation in NZ--I've lived there and have in-laws and some friends who are avid hunters there, even one who was a gov't hunter. I appreciate the predicament and the culture---when you grow up in the US where wasting meat is unethical and even illegal...that is the culture you adopt. When the animals are pests and hunters are paid to kill and let them rot in the bush...that is the culture you adopt. No condemnation there. But if your perspective includes some global experience and you can appreciate what has happened to game and wild animals in places like North America and Africa, its easier to imagine how things MIGHT go similarly in other places...and for those things to happen before its being realized. People forget that CONSERVATION efforts are often led by hunters and hunting associations---perhaps the greatest example of that in the US is President Theodore Roosevelt---an avid trophy hunter who also became one of the greatest proponents for conservation in this country. I think your backcountry trout fishing resource is a small example. The days when you could knock on a farmer's door and access a pristine river with abundant trout seem near an end. Rivers are more crowded, access more limited, a guide for a day cost $600-800, didymo spreading river to river on tourist's equipment.....AND, its become a pretty big money making industry, which if managed well, could be win win. You don't think a wealthy tourist hunter would pay big bucks for a Kiwi bush hunt for a trophy red stag? Big Game in the US was arguably decimated....and the conservation effort has largely been a recovery effort. With a bit of foresight and leadership from Hunting advocates, there is opportunity in NZ to avoid the mistakes other places have made. Nothing is easy. Everything takes time. NZ exports Venison for G's sake, and leaves 1000s of carcasses to rot in the bush?? Red deer even made the menu on one of our fast food burger conglomerates. Letting the meat of an animal beautiful and majestic enough to want to hang its horns/antlers in your home, rot in the bush....well, I think most hunters would admit...its not a good feeling....something wrong with that. Practically speaking though, its like throwing money away, and letting hungry people remain hungry as Naresh suggests in the original comment. I reckon also for most hunters, a big part of the 'experience' is packing that meat out. Its hard work, and it can absolutely suck when you are doing it, but it certainly enhances the memory and the overall experience of the hunt, particularly when its providing meals for family, friends and people in your community who need. And I know from experience, Kiwis are tough...that bush is tough....much tougher than most American hunters in my opinion. I also have no doubt, that if hunters made it mantra to pack your meat out, you'd have more trophy animal in the bush---and not just on game farms. I do enjoy your videos. I bet you'd get more views if you smacked that stag on the ass rather than shot it...although of course can't advocate for that, hunting alone deep in the bush. For clarity, I am not condemning hunting practices or management in NZ (I realize its complicated), I'm just giving my honest opinion and hoping to generate some thought and conversation. I think there is a lot of opportunity to do things differently with beneficial outcome.

    • @Muzz308
      @Muzz308  3 роки тому +1

      @@patmagee4327 Thanks for the comment mate and I agree with you and appreciate that you understand the bigger issues surrounding NZ game animals. Its definitely not my standard procedure to leave meat and when I first started hunting we would carry the buggers out whole haha. I will try do a vid that gets a bit deeper into meat recovery options in the future. I have been lucky to hunt in a few different countries off the back of my old job and each has similarities and differences in there attempts balancing animal populations with the health of the ecosystems they live. Some are better at it than others but none have the perfect solution. I hope NZ continues to progress and starts to implement some strategy and proper management instead of our current free for all. I will continue to remain honest about how I personally conduct myself as a hunter and will attempt to explain why I do what I do when asked. Thanks again Muzz
