“Too many people spend money they haven't earned, to buy things they don't want, to impress people that they don't like” credit card and store cards are not free money. A lot of people look rich but spending to fill a void.
Borrowing to acquire something that does not generate income or appreciate is pointless in my opinion.

The Western economic system is a consumer based soceity without it goods can't be bought, products can't be manufactured, jobs can't be created, investors get no return, banks can't lend and the system crashes.

@@maryallen2317 It's part of Western propaganda for the purpose of promoting conspicuous consumerism to keep this system going.
Without consumption for growth you cannot have products to sell, no sales no profit, no profit no investment, no investment no firm, no firm no jobs, no jobs no income, no income no spending on products and the cycle collapses on itself.
The approach is to divert African consumerism towards African producers and brands which is being don't thorough the Afropolitian movement. It is for younger African millenials and so far it growing in popularity.

This makes a huge difference. So in my view, as a people having this discussion, we need to secure our own retirement plans and not pass on the same burden of making our kids bear the financial burden of taking care of us in old age

You build a house in Lekki at $150k and you get rent of N2.5mil - 3 mill a year which equals to $5-6k annually. Put that same $150k into an index fund. You will get an average of 8-10% annually plus compounding interest. You will be way better off. But we Nigerians are so sentimental. Oh, I have to have a house in Nigeria that I visit once or twice a year. But you spent $100k or more to build it,

Your analysis is based on present value of nair what if dollar drops tommorrow? We can't say in macroeconomics what will happen. If nigerias refining capacity and exportation of petrochemicals, urea, gas, improves under cbn backed dangote refinery the country will be saving billions of dollars in reserves instead of wasting 80 percent of fx on import subsidy. So properties are fixed assets. It his and it's paid for.

I am not just telling you about theory. It is something that I have done in the last ten years and I am still doing coupled with real estate investments here in the U.S. I can assure you that I make very handsome returns. Imagine being over 45, working for decades here in the UK where we have pensions, wills, life insurance, bereavement allowance, heck even schemes that you can pay into your funeral while alive and having to go to strangers for money. Having them in your business for what should be a private matter. I've seen people who floss and show off about having well paid jobs ask for funds to bury their parents and it's strange/sad.

The one about the lawyer is so true. My Immigration lawyer was speaking to me in a tone I did not like and gave me some vibes that made me uncomfortable. I confronted him via email and told him that if he was not ready to do the job that I was going to take my business somewhere else! The very next day, he apologized immediately and asked me to come to his office to discuss, I never said please sir or begged him for anything because I knew my case was legit and he handled my case professionally after that!

The summit could address:education - esp curriculum being taught in the schools- history. We are going to have to change the mindset of the young people !! It’s going to take a “movement” which I believe has started - with Phrankleen and Warish .

If you want to make money, come let's make money together. You have to work. Cos I worked too. Since I developed that mindset, everyone who tried to ask me for money gets directed to my small business to go and WORK😄. You have to be lucky tho to have sane family members.

Funnily enough, in streatham south London. A young Nigerian opened a a convenience store but I found the Asians across the road sold bottles of Guinness from Nigeria cheaper than the Nigerian shop!! I spoke to my Nigerian brother about this but his response was simply, “they shouldn’t sell it that cheap even if they stole it”. The main issue is they owned the supply chain because of their distribution network, they could negotiate better prices. Also, the initial owners of the shop taken over by the Asians across the road was two Nigerians, who fell out and the unit got let to Asians. The irony of it all is, once the Asians get hold of the business, unit and or property will go to another Asian (mostly friend/family). As they move up the food chain, they dominate the property auctions and pay cash for most things (especially in times of economic crisis)....

For instance we tend to date and marry blindly (no discussions about marital contracts and what they mean, no legal and financial advise, no understanding of how those decisions impact estate planning, what about polygamy, what about dying intestate, the issue of having children with multiple women and not providing adequately for them, we do not condemn irresponsible behaviours, keeping secrets from your children about your assets and debts!)
