    There is a major difference with cancelNetflix vs what leftists regularly engage in. The usual cancel culture attack angle is an appeal to authority to squash the offender. Demanding employers, advertisers, or the state scrub the offending entity from sight. In the case of cancelNetflix, at least from what I have seen of it is the opposite. It is an appeal to the people and their personal morality to literally cancel their netflix subscriptions. It is a bit of schadenfreude that the term cancel is applicable in this case but it is so in a different way than traditional cancel culture.

      I agree. There's a huge difference from censoring an individual or banning what they can put out into the world, limiting their ability to support themselves and just walking away or not purchasing their output. It's a fairly easy distinction to make, so anyone conflating the two is disingenuous or flat out thick as a post.

    The difference between Cancel Culture and whatever Gamergate was is that games journos spent weeks to months attempting to gaslight and cover up. Multiple troves of evidence had to be uncovered before the movement even started. Gamergate also told the journos what types of changes would actually appease the group. Some just wanted it canceled but the meat of the movement wanted reform.
    The anti-Gamergate movement was Cancel Culture, they wanted Gaters identified, shamed and canceled. Gamergate itself was more akin to a boycot... which is, you know, possible when you're largely a group that actually enjoys and supports the product. I used it way less but still noticed that it was resulting in a generally more pessimistic and upset mood every time I spent more than 10 minutes on it. Two weeks ago I decided to just check it for a few minutes at the end of the night after work was over and I've seen a remarkable increase in not only how stress free I feel lately but how happy I've been since.
    I still watch You, Sargon, Tim Pool, etc... but even with all the of potentially stressful news and events being brought to my attention through that, the largest form of stress relief and increase in mental health came from reducing my social media time to just what is necessary to see updates or post something myself.

      But a difference only we could identify, that's his point. We basically exist in parallel metaphysical realities at this point, we have different ideologies, moralities, and philosophies which are almost totally at odds with each other. So from a disconnected and disinterested objective position outside of the dichotomy its clear that both are internally consistent, we just happen to disagree because the things we value are different. From there it's clear that our certainty and faith in a particular vision of reality is the only discernible difference from that vantage point. So to that end the only way to combat them isn't to swing wild but to use their own logic against them, in a similar way as was done to the Christians at the beginning of the 21st century. He's most certainly not making a moral comparison, that's quite literally the sum total of this even though he doesn't properly formulate it, this is an amoral view, outside of the petty constraints of how things ought to be.

    To address your first point, belief has nothing to do with it. The defining difference is whether the actions affect the product being provided. An actor saying the wrong thing on Twitter doesn't affect their acting ability in a movie, but a game journo writing a positive story about a game whose developer he/she slept with affects the product being served, that product being game reviews. When the action affects the choices of a consumer negatively through deceit it is justified, being offensive in and of itself but not affecting the choices otherwise is not justified.

    I believe there are vectors that are legitimate and illegitimate in regards to "cancel culture" it's inappropriate to fire someone over personal statements unless they are made as a representative of or in some capacity directly related to the company where they are employed. A company is reasonable in preserving their brand and image but I do not believe it is acceptable for that preservation to extend into the private lives of employees unless the employee is speaking about the company or as an employee of said company. I don't believe there are illegitimate reasons to boycott a company because companies aren't entitled to sales in the same way that individuals are entitled to personal life. A company coercing another company into or out of a political stance is something I can't view as ever legitimate especially using underhanded internal pressures. This is a fascinating form of coercion that we haven't had to deal with as much but now we do and we should discuss what is procedurally "fair game" and what isn't. I could probably write several pages of specifics given enough time but I think this broadly summarizes my stance.

    Since you brought up gamergate, I do think there're many points that separate gamergate from your typical leftist outrage mob, which make it immeasurably more valid.
    1) Gamergate was made up of gamers, about gaming. Not a group of twitter activists unrelated to the subject.
    2) The issues were directly related to the work being done and the "news" sites themselves, not an unrelated tweet on someone's personal account years ago.
    3) It wasn't just the political views being expressed that issue was taken with. It was that politics were being pushed at all. It was the cronyism and general corruption. Once again, all directly part of the work in question rather than something separate to the businesses, or the jobs.
    4) It was in part retaliation to an attempt to cancel ALL GAMERS AND GAMING CULTURE.
    5) It didn't follow the people in question outside of the gaming industry and continue to try to destroy them; cancel them. I'd say this is what made it not cancel culture. Of course there's trolls that will try to mess with anyone they can, but if some activist calling themselves a journalist got kicked out and left, or made a good faith attempt to change themselves like Ian Miles Cheong did (I know that didn't work out), GG wasn't interested in them anymore. Hurting people was never the goal in and of itself.

You will find that gun control laws are not effective and do not stop "rampage" style lone wolf shootings. If I insist that mass shootings are caused by media and cultural problems rather than gaps in the law. Am I trying to sell you something? I don't think so. The canceling of Kraut was just as much justified as GamerGate was back then. Canceling somebody over unetchical practices while on the job is holding people to account.
    But canceling somebody over necroing their twitter takes from a century(internet time) ago is just unethical itself.

    Cancelling organisations for terrible actions is fine, if you cancel a business it'll likely survive and if it doesn't the majority of people involved can likely walk away and get a different job.
    Cancelling people for not even that terrible actions is not fine, if you cancel a person there's a good chance you've just rendered them unemployable and that's just it, game over man.

    I stuck with Kraut and Tea for a long time through even his apparent horrid actions and waited for him to come back to defend himself. I accepted his defense and moved on. Then he started going insane, I remember leaving comments on his videos both on UA-cam and Dissenter (it was the new hip thing then) complaining mightily about his extremely dishonest tactics in his videos (the three after Cheap Swastika Remake). Watching him conflate Sargon and other such characters with Richard Spencer and his ilk without even the spine to say it directly pissed me off to no end.
    Now, he just makes history-in-a-nutshell videos with country balls. Cool but I have no interest in him now. He pissed me off and I don't forget slights like that easy even if I don't remember what I ate for breakfast today, and as such, I won't enjoy his content.
    On that note, interest in the person is the only reason I continue to watch UA-camrs as opposed to doing it myself. I only started watched Blitzkreigsler because I liked the idea of Rimworld 6 years ago. I bought the early access game a short time later but I kept watching the man because I liked him. I would have never watched another one of his videos if I didn't love his child-like zeal for life. I still watch the eventually Christened "Blitz" because I want to hear him and his eternally happy reactions not because I want to see playthroughs of some bullshit, flavor-of-the-month game. Similarly, I would do the research in Marxist theory or scour through historical manuals on European Swordsmanship myself if I didn't like the UA-camr covering it. The only reason I watch Shadiversity or ScholaGladitoria or Sargon or you is because I like you and like hearing your thoughts regardless of how much I may disagree.
    To quote one of my favs, Goodbye and I love you.

    Having been part of the outrage machine surrounding NetFlix and Cuties, I don't support the cancellation of Cuties(and I hope the film is still on NetFlix when I've got money to spend as I'm planning on reviewing it).
    In my, _very_ , humble opinion you cannot oppose Cancel culture and at the same time demand that things you do not like be removed, because that is the very essence of Cancel culture, and something we all should fight with word and deed.

    I actually really appreciate this video, and I'm happy to illustrate what I think is the difference between Cancel Culture and things like Gamergate.
    Fundamentally, Cancel Culture is not liking a person due to their views and actively trying to destroy the person's livelihood *because* you don't like those views. In other words, you're not going after the person because they have done something demonstrably wrong. Their views are either offensive or, in the case of politicians, politically inconvenient for you. So you want to see them ruined as a means of shutting them up, as well as frightening to silence anyone else who holds similar views.
    Of course, in the case of politicians, it's less about their views and more about their political inconvenience. So the politician will *play* at being morally outraged while dragging up outrageous things as a means of getting rid of the competition. Same goes for other elites like celebrities.
    Whereas Gamergate and the Netflix boycott were customers responding to something that an entity has *done* that is demonstrably wrong. Netflix posted something that borders on child porn. We can see that such a thing is wrong. The game journos colluded behind the scenes to attack their own audience as a means of covering up the corruption and cronyism that was first revealed in The Zoe Post (and then further exposed by more digging, later). We can see that corruption, and attempting to cover up corruption, is wrong.
    Overall, if a person can point to a demonstrable wrong that has been committed, I'm not comfortable with calling it 'cancel culture' if that person then wants the one who committed the wrong to be held accountable.

  • @Liam4Dead
    @Liam4Dead 2 роки тому +3

    Real simple, Gamergate was an exposé and a denial of the corruption seen within the gaming press. Zoe Quinn slept with a variety of different journalists, all giving her favorable reviews. Then, once there was backlash to this, the industry conspired together in online calls and posted articles claiming the gamer identity was dead. As Metokur said back in the day, imagine if a journalist interviewed a politician, giving them favorable coverage, but later you find out that the two were sleeping together. Do you not see that as a clear conflict of interest and against journalistic ethics? The same is true here. This isn’t even getting into the ideological nonsense we see.

    One if not the most disgusting aspect of social media. Cowardly, requires minimum effort, incurs no personal costs whatever the result, and can have life-changing consequences for the victim.
    The worst part, makes you feel righteous, virtuous, when it is anything but. It makes people engaging in it not able to recognise their own immorality.

      @bokudensuduharagmail Very little can be done to you when you are a student. An instructor (grad student, adjunct or professor) can have their careers, their LIVES destroyed by these evil children. I am not excusing the fear, but it is not irrational, and it cannot be compared to a student speaking up to an instructor.

    • @f1b0nacc1sequence7
      @f1b0nacc1sequence7 4 роки тому

      @bokudensuduharagmail I believe that you have completely missed my point. A particularly obnoxious professor with an ideological axe to grind can certainly hurt a student, but even their worst efforts pale in comparison to what can happen to a full time academic who gets caught in this sort of thing. Students confronted with the consequences you describe certainly suffer, but they can (and do) recover from these things, and go on with their lives. A professor looking for tenure, a grad student looking to complete their terminal degree, an adjunct looking for next semester's contract can easily see their career's vaporized in an instant, and quite often no recovery is possible. That you compare this to a grade being lowered (or even failing a single class) shows an almost inconceivable lack of proportion.

    • @f1b0nacc1sequence7
      @f1b0nacc1sequence7 4 роки тому

      @bokudensuduharagmail I believe that if you asked Brett Weinstein (Jordan Peterson is most definitely a special case, and in any event, was already well established in his field outside of the purely academic setting), he would agree with me on this. Some VERY lucky individuals manage to survive with some career shreds to hang on to, but for someone who has committed 2+ decades to gain a tenured position, no...running a youtube channel and writing the odd book that is ignored within his chosen field is NOT an acceptable substitute. Again, we are talking about careers being destroyed. As for the 'being unsuited for work outside of McDonalds', you are overdramatizing (though I suppose I shouldn't be surprised)...undergrads have plenty of options to rebuild. Try losing everything when you are 40 not 20....
      As for my 'half the picture', I left a tenured position in academe 30 years ago because I could see this coming, and had no desire to live with it. I miss what academe could have been, but not what it has become. Before that, I was a conservative student in a very liberal field (political science), so I did indeed see exactly how hard it is for undergrads under these circumstances.
      I have no further interest in you. Last word is yours....then go away.

    Anyone else actually been a victim of cancel culture or seen someone who has?
    I have. Watching someone lose their job over another person getting offended over a word another said. Spoke to that person just recently, found out he was diagnosed with asperger's shortly after he lost his job. The corporation only cared about diversity and inclusivity, but only if the company isn't affected. If also curious, he went back to school, got accepted into honor society, and still isn't working. This job loss was almost 2 years ago. He told me that he had applied to over 150 jobs, no response from anyone. He also deleted his Facebook, reddit account, only has UA-cam account so he can watch videos. Trying to talk him into making content too. Guy is funny and insightful.
