It wasn't just america that's ruined the label of 'liberal/conservative'. Britain had a large part to do with it as well, and Canada just followed along.
Namely, Sir Edward Grey pushed for 'social liberalism' 100 years ago, which was basically dressing up socialist morality (ie. more and more equity; equality above freedom) in liberal politics. Since then, what it has meant to be liberal has become more and more socialist, until we now have socialists who very easily pretend to be liberals.

Why Jordan Peterson's "Clean your own room" hits so well, that in order to become a better person, you need to self-reflect and see that maybe it might be your fault instead of constantly blaming everyone and everything else. 8:46 You know: This bears out something I thought of about a year back. Someone asked Matt Walsh and Michael Knowles what their favorite "-isms" were, and because they were both sleep-deprived and distracted they didn't realize what the question meant (they thought I.S.M. was an acronym for something).
I thought about how I would answer, though, and because "libertarianism" was too easy I went with "anthropocentrism."
You cannot make "Nature" or "The Environment" or "The Planet" or "Society" more important in your moral decisions without making the individual rights of other people _LESS_ important. I think a lot of really radical leftists have used their idealistic fantasy of a perfect world to give themselves permission to write off vast numbers of other people, until they simply cannot entertain the concept of individual rights any longer.
It seems like right-wingers are always kinder in person than in their "tough love" political personas, and left-wingers are always meaner in person than in their "bleeding heart" political personas. Conservatives and libertarians are trying to make the best possible world that people can live in, while liberals and progressives are just trying to make the best possible world - and if some people _can't_ live in it then those people must be the problem.

When your specific progressive goals are met, you eventually become conservative on those issues.
    _Example: gay marriage_
If you are old enough, you remember a time in your country when gay marriage was illegal. If you were young and progressive, you probably wanted that changed. By now, your country probably has changed that.
If you are sane, you don't want marriage rights extended further (to children, animals, etc.). You don't want to end gay marriage, you just don't want any more progress on that item.
    _end example_
When enough items get ticked off of your wish list, you may find yourself aligning more with the conservative political parties than the progressive ones. That isn't you getting more conservative over time, that's just winning politically.

    • @MrJoeyWheeler
      @MrJoeyWheeler 3 роки тому +81

That sums things up rather nicely. When I was young, before I was politically-active, gay marriage in my country wasn't a thing. It became a thing before I was politically-aware. And because I became politically-aware after that, I ended up realising "huh, the only 'progressive' thing that really matters was already done. I have no reason to support it."
And even if I had, the progressives have become more and more insane to the point that I have gone from being neutral towards them to believing it is a moral imperative to oppose it at every turn.

If you don't understand what "Conservative" means in western society, then sure that sounds ok.
But Conservatives don't give a shit about winning for winnings sake, it's not about ticking boxes over time. Our interest is primarily in what preserves our principles and way of life. The problem with Progressives is, their ideology doesn't permit them to stop and so we will always be antithetical to each other. A utopia for one is a hell for another. Rather than trying to remake the world in one's image, one can simply choose to surround themselves with like-minded people and seek to improve the small piece of the world that they inhabit.

For me personally, I went from a little more than center left to dead center/center right after GamerGate.
Experiencing being treated as a liar, a nazi, a fascist, a misogynist, a homophobe and so on just for explaining basic information, I immediately understood that I'd done similar things (in a much less hostile way) against "right wing" values.
I gained humility and understood almost immediately that one though has to remain in the foreground: We have to share this planet, so at the end of the day, even if we don't all agree, we at least recognize that fact and can coexist. If the young left is ignorant of that fact, and yes I absolutely believe that it's more than vital to maintain society, then there is one side that is extremely obviously in the wrong.
If I can be tolerant of opposing viewpoints and things I disagree with coming into law or power, then the opposite has to as well. If that's not possible and we devolve down to who has more power, then violence is guaranteed, which we're seeing the majority of in Portland, US.
Funny enough, I've just had a spat with someone who'd older than me (adult past his 40's) who has displayed a fundamental inability to be humble and considerate of opinions different from his own. He has a fairly hard left wing position and he views me with disdain and paints me as arrogant. I'm not even trying to disprove his position, I'm trying to explain mine which he interprets as an attack.
It confuses the hell out of me, because this happens with what I consider to be smart people, where they regress into a child like mode, get defensive, lose confidence and take it personally instead of just trying to understand information presented to them. Hell, we all get angry and sometimes stubborn if an argument gets really heated, but more and more things from from 0-100 in an instant.
So obviously not all people get more conservative, but I don't feel like that's true either. As stated, I feel that for myself it's just growing up, being more humble, open minded and sometimes yes, being more learned about something and being able to explain the difficulties or problems with an idea that fundamentally is flawed, such as ideological communism and all patterns of logic going the same direction.

Not only do people go through different social groups through out life but the general public terminology used in politics changes through out time. That's why we have so many disaffected liberals, people who haven't changed their political views at all, are now being called conservative by the farther left and the democrat establishment. And these old school liberals are seeing themselves siding more with traditional conservatives more and more each day.
Though the far left aren't exactly doing a good job of painting themselves as virtuous, despite all their virtue signaling, it's pretty hard for the average person to support riots, looting, violence and insane communistic idealism. The longer you're around, the more time you have to consider the world around you, how things work, how things are connected to each other, and why the world won't simply conform to utopian ideals. One of the routes to 'growing more conservative' is to consider how the things you use on a daily basis came into being; e.g. what processes were required to manufacture the clothing you wear, the tech you use, and the food you eat, how many people were involved in that and, again, what processes were involved to allow those people to do their jobs. This involves a LOT of cooperation between people which utopian thinking is at odds with as it seeks to divide people.

Right wing used to mean monarchism but there are hardly any right wingers nowadays that defend the idea of monarchy. Likewise advocates of liberal capitalism would have been considered the leftists of their time. The politics have shifted no doubt and there have certainly been right wing societies and movements throughout history but overall I would say that history tends to move in a leftward direction.

Public orgs shouldn't engage in enterprises which are not wholly public and private organizations shouldn't take on public roles, like having privately run prisons as the potential profit motive behind incarceration is rather concerning. I think we should have very limited laws regulating the actions of individuals, and more laws regulating the actions of corporations as corporate power can be as great as government power, this has been known for a long time. I don't think the government should be operating in the realm of morality. This was a problem in the late 70s through 2000s as it pertained to the religious right, now we have a moralizing left. I don't like critical social justice as it doesn't operate according to the enlightenment rationality or liberalism which are core to the US. I do not agree with conservatives when it comes to a number of policies from tax policy to regulatory policy and other things, but that doesn't seem to matter now. I think that if "public health" is a thing then we should have a national health insurance system, medicare for all perhaps.
As a result of all of the above I am lumped in with conservatives by the left and lumped in with the left by the conservatives.
Side? I am on nobody's side, because nobody is on my side.

I always been a conservative my whole life but I do understand where a lot of liberals are coming from. They described it as being politically homeless.

I don't know. My grandma is one of the most insane hardcore leftists I've ever seen. She's 87. I still love her but we can't talk politics at all. That's the part that bugs me now, we can't even discuss politics and that's been recent. Last 5-10 years or so. I've never really considered myself conservative but according to her because I don't make snap decisions on news headlines and like to gather information first so I'm literally Hitler. I miss her, she makes some damn good lasagna.

I just got done watching the video on Odysee(I don't know if you read comments on Odysee, so I'm commenting here), but one other reason why I suspect this to be the case is, at least for the moment with the current education, the liberal indoctrination that is happens in school wears off as they experience more of the world. I don't remember like 90% of the stuff I was taught in school because new memories and knowledge have replaced old ones. I also feel like its less likely for you to get liberal indoctrination than you are to get conservative indoctrination, since as far as I know, publicly funded education is a value from liberals.

I remember long ago watching a news program about liberal parents who raised kids who turned out to be conservative, and how that experience is as a parent. One of the couples said the most insightful, mature things I'd ever heard from an adult: "Look, we raised our son to be independent, a critical thinker, and to make his own conclusions and decisions. We gave him those tools, we can't be upset he used them and came to his own conclusions like we taught him to do."
I'm like DAMN, if even only half of parents were that enlightened and consistent with their ideals, actually TOLERANT, our problems would reduce massively. Just because someone doesn't agree with you doesn't mean they die to you, they just disagree. It's not the end of the world, and if it is that's sad.

So Kellyane is a terrible mother, her ex-husband was a weak man and her daughter is the typical product of a broken home? Yeah, nothing remotely shocks me about this.

I agree that conservatives and liberals need to start coming together on some things. No one side is always right and all the negativity and fighting is getting us literally no where. Also people need to focus on what is happening in there current world and life and stop raging about "the world" as the internet portrays it.
