Corporate America is probably hoping that they are closer to the second generation of Hippies. Hippies went on to become Yuppies, some of the staunchest proponents of Capitalism in the 1980s. Once they have been allowed to ruin things enough by not resisting them, they may come around all on their own.
The biggest problem with that assumption is that they will ever come around. The YUP in Yuppie stood for 'Young Urban Professional', after all.
Some of these people have aged out of that probability window.

I still think analyzing the world like one would a story written by an author can be a rather interesting, if not particularly insightful, point of view. Long story short, I wouldn't call it smart nor well thought out, but it definitely piques the interest.
The problem of course, and I believe that this is what prompted your negative gut reaction to that guy's content, is that this viewpoint places the youtuber as the critic of reality. As someone that is, like a comic book critic, separate from the subject matter, omniscient as far as this subject goes, and the authority on what is good and bad. Combined with political and economical hot takes, I can definitely see where your reaction is coming from.
Again though, good on the guy to try something a bit different and interesting for his videos. There are some unintended negative connotations, but I like that there is at least some creative process going on there. Again, compare and contrast with barely edited 30mn stream clips.

@@jackalenterprisesofohio To explain its weirdness a little: cities are areas of commerce, a marketplace, where transactions can happen rapidly involving many different parties. This means that cities have logistical constraints on where they can actually be located related to getting goods and people to the specific marketplace. Major cities are located on large rivers and coasts for this exact reason: boats remain a powerful form of transport. Thus, geography plays a significant role in where a city can go, and due to the low supply of such land and the high demand for it (being everyone who wants to engage in the marketplace at a prospective city) that land becomes valuable. Unsurprisingly, as railroads and air transit proliferated, cities began to be placed elsewhere, see Denver. As for the other uses land might have, well, there's lots of room for wheat, and it's less picky than shipping containers.

The reason? They were going to make a thoroughfare that never got off the ground. These houses were left vacant for 50 years

You may be thinking of the Tragedy of the Commons, which is the tendency for common property to fall into disrepair, disuse, or become fallow due to negligence, as communal property has no individual owner (and therefore no-one is incentivized to take care of it). The Broken Window fallacy has to do with the assumption that destroying things (as in war) is good for the economy because it creates jobs when, in reality, it is merely an inefficient reallocation of resources.

I see Dev's discovered the Austrian School...
Yes, Rent Control leads to a paradox of high homelessness and a high count of empty units. In NYC, it's not at all unheard of for a landlord to inform his tenants of a fire starting tonight, move everyone out, and then for there to be a fire in that rental, as newer "apartment" units will be rebuilt as condominiums. Rent controlled apartments offer no long term profitability, meaning if a landlord is to make a profit, several other things happen. Non-controlled apartment prices rise, "non-rental apartments" i.e. condos rise, and apartment quality nosedives because if you can't make money with a higher price to consume, you make money by cutting product quality, and a roach motel costs less to upkeep than an actual rental.
You also tend to find that rent-controlled apartments DON'T get taken by the poor, they get taken by the savvy rich who realize that eventually a rent controlled apartment becomes marketable after all the other rental properties cost rise, meaning it's not all that heard of for a NY studio apartment to be owned by some rich person who uses it as an office after it's snatched by an investor who realizes what a deal a rent-controlled apartment is, something a poor person cannot take advantage of.
Rent control doesn't work, it has never worked, and the only reason people advocate for it is feel-good quantum woo or cynical politicians trying to whip the people up with bread and circus sloganeering.

Another angle on housing prices that you should explore is the effect of zoning on housing. Preventing companies from building high occupancy dwellings (tenament houses) prevents there being an viable low end to the housing market, leading to homelessness. Preventing single family homes from being turned into apartment complexes artificially constrains supply of homes where people want to live, leading to higher rents. Commercial vs residential zoning is another way supply is artificially controlled. The housing market is overzoned. Zoning reform alone won't fix the issues but it would help a lot.

One thing I'd like to mention in regards to the housing issues where I live (Alberta). In Alberta, we got large numbers of people moving to Alberta (largely from other provinces) for jobs, who seek out relatively nice houses. This led to a massive increase in demand for upper middle income houses with more features that drive up the price of said houses, leading to a massive focus on said houses practically exclusively. What followed was a large number of foreigners coming in seeking cheaper houses, in an environment where none were being built. The current housing development in Alberta (at least in regards to the major cities) are large, expensive houses with lots of modern features such as solar panels and smart housing features, over cheaper easier to make houses that are more affordable.
The end result of the tl;dr above is that housing prices are going up on average due to an absolute dirth of cheaper houses being constructed, and the market is being utterly glacial in swapping priorities (especially because a housing project typically lasts multiple years, so a lot of housing projects are operating under assumptions from 2012-2015).

This place is AWESOME, but there is a lot of work to do and you find out that certain things aren't up to code....basically, be ready to spend 30k more than what the house is...the good news though, the house gained 50k equity immediately after our purchase so, there's that.

my hometown is a dead end for careers for the majority of it. tertiary education was very slim pickings, there was very little career advancement beyond supermarket department manager, partially skilled labour, or industrial/meatworks manager. I left the place because there was nothing for me there other than to rot in decline while spinning my wheels going nowhere. I have a saying about that town: "there are 3 things to do here; get drunk, get in a fight, get someone knocked up. most people manage to do 2 of those each weekend"
the only thing better I noticed in my hometown was cheaper rent and cheaper houses, though that difference is exacerbated by the city I'm now in having been slammed by an earthquake 10 years back, and a rush of tradesmen and other workers worsened a huge supply issue with housing that was already bad after the quakes basically erased a few suburbs worth of buildings.

One more thing to consider about land: even if land somehow were infinite, it would still likely behave in the same way it does right now, because the land within some reasonable distance of other important things is always going to be limited. A housing crisis is about the density of housing in relation to the attractiveness of an area. Eg if the area has lots of (decently paying) jobs, but little housing, then the price of housing in that area would be high. This would be true even if land was effectively infinite.

Big thing that people in USA including these tubers don't seem to understand that after certain size of city single family homes just aren't realistic anymore. Most other parts of word go for much higher density...

Land effectively is infinite, there's an average of about 100'000 square feet per family in the United States. If everyone lived on a theoretical infinite plane most wouldn't want to live quadrillions of lightyears away from everyone else, the land closer to things want to be near would be more valuable despite "it's all just land".
This corresponds to reality where you can easily buy a plot of land for very little in the open plains of Montana with only one caveat... It's in the open plains of Montana.
The value of land is its proximity to other land.

Why is PhilosophyTube acting like this is a comic book? Last time I checked, comic books have a plot that goes in favor of the protagonists, real life, not so much.

I watched that PTube video, where he does the "comic book" analysis of Housing, when it came out. I unsubbed after that.
It was his praise of the Venezuelan Collectivos.
The problem with Neomarxists, well, with any Hegel-derived Political Authoritarians, is that coercion is REQUIRED once they take hold of your society. I'd rather struggle in a hardcore libertarian world, where my enemies are lack and the uncaring natural world, than the hardcore Socialist/communist world, where my enemies are my society, at any random moment.

@@bfFAN221 James Lindsey has a great video about it over on his New Discourses channel. I'll post a link after this comment.
My understanding of Hegel, at this point is that he's a freaky Prussian wizard. Kind of a dude-bro distillation, but gets straight to the point.
I listened to Lindsey's vid about him and on a hunch, rooted around on the internet for info, and my hunch was true.
Anarchism (Bakunin and Proudhon), as well as Fascism (Gentile) and Hitler... all followers of Hegel, nor some aspect. It's as if Hegel took a shit, and the craziest, worst people kept it as a holy relic.
I also have a hunch that Mary Shelley's character, Victor Von Frankenstein was at least vaguely inspired by Hegel. She published Frankenstein in 1818, and the bulk of Hegels work was published before that. Just a hunch, because, in my mind, Hegel was the crazy scientist who created monsters, and as a British writer, in a growing Liberal world, she must have picked up on that.

I think people have forgotten houses for single men (and women). Where it was essentially a dorm with single, double, or more per room. A house “mother” would cook and clean and the tenants could get 2 meals a day. It allowed young folks to get out on their own and transition while there was usually some staff helping them. We’ve moved away from that and now everyone needs a full apartment - further consuming valuable land and driving up costs for everyone.
People need the pod or whatever to transition to the big cities. Usually you want the ones without bugs in the beds or on the menu.
