  • Hamilton Morris is a journalist, documentary producer and a chemist.
    Hamilton's Pharmacopeia is one of the most interesting documentaries around chemistry, psychoactive drugs, psychedelic culture and traditional uses for plant medicine ever.
    Sadly Season 3 is the last one, but Hamilton joins me today to talk about his interest in consciousness, why chemistry hasn't captured culture like other sciences, why Mkat failed because of a branding issue, why we should be synthesising DMT ourselves instead of squeezing Bufo Alvarius the psychedelic toad of the Sonoran Desert and much more...

      Auto correct went and fucked your spelling of dulcet there.
      Interesting talk. I get conflicted on these issues because, sure these things can be positive. But I was a teen in the 80s and I've seen the whole gamut, including the wreckage and those who pursue these things to death.
      I do like the idea of Government staying out of these matters, but this also presumes people act rationally. Also the last 11 months has proven conclusively that Government literally can't stay out of our lives no matter how minor. As such this gent is dreaming, just like the people were 50 years ago, just without the layers of woo.

    I am currently micro dosing LSD. I suffered a brain injury 10 years ago, and I've been on every seizure medication and antidepressant out there. I sit on the couch. I never leave my house, except for doctor's appointments. I can't stop my obsessive thoughts about what life could have been that I'm a failure, that nothing is ever going to be okay again. I'm not exaggerating when I say on my third day I felt better than I have since before my brain injury! I was up doing things I drove my car to the store by myself for the first time and over a year on day 3! This is huge for me. I look forward to what things are going to be available for people in the future. I can't believe that this has been kept from people with PTSD and depression for so long! I'm just not sure how often to take it I have it in a dropper bottle diluted with vodka. Maybe not the best chemical way to deliver it but I'm a whole new person! I've cried tears of joy, because of how I feel now. 🙏❤️🙂

    When I was a kid growing up you could buy chemistry sets, electronic sets, telescope sets, etc. at Sears, Woolworths, and so on. Dubious as some of them were, they encouraged children's interest in chemistry. As was everything of that era, it was a hands-on, tactile, analog experience. Today, every other scientific field has an endless variety of starter kits or other means to give children the same hands-on experience, but attempt to put together a small but decent lab and you'll get a visit from the feds. There is zero chance of the chemistry equivalent of a Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, or Elon Musk emerging. Whether or not that is a good thing for society I do not know, but it is a blessing to the oil and chemical industry.

    I especially love that he consistently differentiates and spot lights the differences between 'abuses of a substance' and 'issue's of prohibitions'. This is such an important point towards moving forward in ending the war on drugs and moving the conversation onto a more productive and sustainable use of public resources for example, bringing educated researched scientific fact to a very opinion based discussion...

    I am a chemist. Hamilton is right everything in nature is chemicals, the problem are xenobiochemicals, chemicals that we created that life does not know (they are new to life forms). I think the chemofobia is developed from a subconscious understanding that these xenobiochemicals are corespsonible for disease development. Which I understand and agree with. Addendum: ALL patented drugs are per definition xenobiochemicals, you cannot patent naturally present chemicals...

    • @damianbouras
      @damianbouras 3 роки тому +2

      This is simply false
      The fact that something exists in nature doesn't make it better
      Many chemics from plants and animals are very lethal even though they have existed in nature for millions of years.
      Many synthetic "new" chemicals have no effect and pass through the body without even interacting with anything
      Many synthetic chemicals have postive effects on the body
      Just because something is synthetic doesn't change its properties
      Synthetic and chemicals made in organisms function according to the same rules
      In addition
      "Xenobiochemicals" or as they are really called xenobiotics aren't always man made.
      If I consume mescaline produced by plants it's also considered xenobiotics since it isn't produced by me and isn't part of my expected uptake.
      Edit:I changed "smoked DMT" to "consumed mescaline" since we produce DMT in very small quantities

    Consciousness can't be understood or characterized, but you can have direct unitive experience with it through the regular practice of meditation. Consciousness, the whole of creation, the source of all being, absolute reality, or whatever you want to call it. Wish more scientists would take up the practice. They seem deeply confounded by something that's been explored throughout the ages and written about quite powerfully and lucidly.

    • @Kazokano
      @Kazokano 2 роки тому

      If you ever decide to try a deliriant, I suggest starting with an amanita muscaria (fly agaric) extract from a reputable source. It's the only psychoactive substance from that psychopharmacological category I've ever personally tried, but friends have also tried datura and heroic amounts of nutmeg, and I've inferred from their experiences that amanita muscaria is the most "gentle" of common deliriants. However, it's still ludicrously unpredictable as deliriants generally are; my two experiences felt like two entirely different drugs! Be sure to have a sitter.
      Also... don't expect it to be "fun". It can certainly be interesting, even fascinating, but it will most likely be unpleasant.
