- Tulum is experiencing an explosion of people taking Bufo Alvarius. Also called “speed-toading,” it involves smoking the milked poison of the Sonoran Desert toad in a glass pipe and is considered to be the most powerful hallucinogen in the world. Something that Hamilton Morris has pointed out is that the demand for Bufo venom is driving the toad to extinction. This is a pointless ecological catastrophe because the drug itself (5MeO DMT) can be synthesized, with chemicals available legally in Mexico and at a very low cost per dose.
Unfortunately, the psychedelic community is full of people who aren't great at logical thinking and they think it is somehow necessary to use a natural product instead of a synthetic drug despite the chemical equivalency of both forms.

From someone who has experimented with psychodelics...its a quick fix that doesnt last forever. Overcoming trauma takes years of dedicated practice. The same can be said for self love
and i don't feel like these allies 'fix' anything. the only thing that can 'fix' you is you. but they do lend insight as the root to the problems. and give guidance on what steps to take next. it also depends on your intention going into these journeys. u get out what u put in.

100% agree. with this second huge wave of psychedelics coming into the main stream and people using them for "medicinal" reasons, the purpose and power of psychedelics are getting lost. it can open your eyes temporarily and assist with making changes, but the real work is done every day while sober. you can learn everything from the universe during a trip but it really doesn't mean anything if it can't be applied in real life. like if the only way a person can get to an enlightened state is through drugs, then are they really enlightened? ive also experimented with psychedelics and found them detrimental in some ways, since your consciousness is so heightened during a trip, when you come down it can feel like life is too hard to live, or that the journey to get to where you wanna be spiritually is too far away. this isn't in this video specifically, but i've seen a lot of people recommending psychedelics to everyone and that they can "help anyone that tries them" but this is misinformation and doesn't take into account mental health issues, trauma, and even a person's genetics. i'm just commenting cause i thought i was the only one that felt this way. it's comforting on some level to know other people see that it really is just a quick fix that doesn't last forever or magically fix a person's perspective or life.
@@YouAreDreamingRightNow That is correct. Psychedelics aren't a fix to trauma as I would know with C-PTSD. They do not cure it, but they will give you guidance, healing and new viewpoints. Then we have to do the work ourselves, which surely is not always easy. Changing others is impossible, changing yourself is hard too.

Are we just going to ignore the fact that the shaman just ignored and even reinforced the claims about abuse and assault during such psychedelic ceremonies? This was a very powerful documentary, but it truly shocked me how ignorant and unaware the "so-called" guides were about these allegations. The audacity to say that the women are at fault for "creating a reaction" in the man is so banal and absurd.
That Shaman he interviewed on the beach seemed to have ethical practices, having a female present and being administered in a public space, for examples.
I think it was good that Matt found, but trusted, a shadier one for his own trip. It gave a good contrast.

Yeah I was surprised that this wasn't the main subject of the documentary.
He chose the most expensive retreat. The shaman did not stay sober.
When asked, he said that women who experience assault in this environment have themselves to blame.
And he reiterated that after being given a chance to hide behind a 'language barrier ' by his colleague.

To be fair I just watched the last two minutes after I made that comment - and he did surface that himself.

Spanish is my first and main language, I can certify that there was nothing lost onin translation here. He understood the question and answered it honestly based on his views. The majority of the world still has a lot to learn around victim blaming. Claiming he’s a man as if that justifies him from having any responsibility or control over his impulses… geeeeeeeeez. Comparing rape to falling while walking in a cave. No, no. One is an accident. Another is an intentional, meditated, and voluntary horrendous crime perpetrated and justified by monsters. Good luck getting your bufo to heal you from that. As for Vice, excellent documentary and we should also add information on the impact this practice is having on the toads. Thanks for your work!

All decisions come with risk. Humans often overlook risk in their decision making when they are desperate.
I think two questions are being asked here.
One is moral, the other is legal.
Should women be more careful, men more gallant, the world more safe, and who should be legally culpable for a crime that we (rightfully) consider a crime?
An ideal world would have no suffering. A preferable world would see that this industry get regulated to hell and back.
so if you are a woman, and you are getting ready to go on such a experience where you are going to be vulnerable.. wouldnt it be a good idea to bring a third party (a friend) thats gonna wach over you?

I think it's irresponsible for Vice to talk about bufo and not talk about the toad's threat to survival due to the overharvesting by these neoshamans. The toad is extremely important to the Yaqui tribes and they have asked to use synthetic 5 M3O for ten years so the population can come back 🙏🏻

To my knowledge most who harvest the poison do not harm the animal, and release it back into the environment, as it's the mucus from the back of it

Highly appreciate this guy's approach to this documentary. Very honest, and stays in reality and stand by the truth. He wasn't buying into the cover-up. I think you're absolutely dead on accurate. There's a real sexual assault issue that absolutely needs to be addressed and the viewers need to be aware of this if they choose to go to something like this.

I had a psychedelic experience once that sent me to eternity and meeting the creator. My ego dissolved yet I was physically terrified. It was so magical and so full of love, changed my life for good. In the most positive way possible. it’s been the best thing that’s happened to me in a long time.
Since I tired psychedelics for the first time, I’ve been trying to describe the experience to others so there can try it as well, but i couldn’t find the right words to describe it.

One of the biggest mistakes I've ever made in my life is taking psychedelics and recommending them to people because I had so many revelations in my own experience. I'm unaware if anyone ever took my advice, but from my last few trips, I now realize that psychedelics are a dice roll on either the best journey you will ever have in your life or the worst mental torture you will ever experience.
Not really I’ve done 100+ dmt ceremonies and have never had a bad trip but because I’ve done it with shamans

if you think about it, you will realize that the europeans who forced christianity onto the native american population had exactly this pattern of thought in mind : "i've been to church since my childhood and it always was good, hey, let's convert these people who do not yet realize our shaman in rome is the more competent one !"

I’ve done DMT several times, LSD more times than I can remember, and shrooms a few times. I’ve smoked a lot of weed and a few times had semi-psychedelic experiences. I have had a good amount of bad experiences. I don’t regret a single one or consider it a mistake. They’re are extremely valuable experiences. The contribution they have made to my growth spiritually far surpasses anything I received growing up and I very much needed. Even the bad times. It all matters. If you expected all good, you should stay away from any substance because you’re in for a shock. Bad experiences are inevitable. Balance is necessary. This is just a principle of this reality. I think psychedelics are extremely important for western culture right now, as the lifestyle that is popularized and encouraged is very far from any kind of spirituality and gets further every year. The truth is these substances, or medicines if you prefer, are a very harsh way to wake you up from the haze that no spirituality creates. The traditional way to do this is with meditation and prayer. In various different way. But it’s much slower and more guided. A much safer way to open yourself up. Psychedelics just force you open, so there’s no protection against any negative energies that may come your way, especially if you’re not used to it. They’re not bad. But if you misuse them, you will be punished. If anything, I learned to have respect and love for every part of it. From synthesis to consumption to integration.
I’ve done mushrooms and LSD like close to 100 times and DMT about 30 times and I’ve never had a bad trip. Just lessons and maybe darker vibes but if you just embrace the experience it’s all good I feel like when you don’t let go completely and let the drugs take control is when you have that bad trip.

I'm a veteran, alcohol and cigarettes addiction actually destroyed my life. I suffered severe depression and mental disorder. Got diagnosed with cptsd. The locals take those little jungle entities very seriously and do ceremonies to ask for permission to build houses, roads and such. I heard stories where they weren't taken into consideration and how it all went badly wrong - according to them

It's a psychological trait called openness. I have an intense desire to experience everything. This is very tempting to me, but i don't want to run the risk of a bad trip, and it damaging who I am.

I think what happened is back in the primordial times when they didn't have very much food they were trying to survive and they cook the toad on a fire and they inhaled the smoke from it cooking on the fire cuz they were going to eat the toad and it had that effect on them and that's what peaked there interest in the first place. Toads would be really easy to catch and eat.

I don't consider myself an overly spiritual person but I do enjoy an occasional psychedelic trip, so I dive into this world from time to time and meet these types of people. I enjoy their company at first, kind and peaceful, oozing love and freedom, but after spending some time with them, I very often find something repulsive, worrying or downright scary in the way they talk, think or behave. That fucking creep at the end gave me the chills because it reminded me of these people and made me realize that in most cases the repulsive thing is their hidden predatoristic vibe (of course I don't mean to generalize but there is certainly a 'type')

I ve met the most narrow minded people after a second glance and often at first glance in the esoteric scene. They often think that they are so tolerante but at the end they are not really only wearing this coat of tolerance and peace.

I grew up in the Sonoran desert and I know these toads from the wild very well. Two even mated in my pool growing up. I even helped relocate some to a safer part of the desert away from houses and pools after that. People need to leave these toads alone. They are sacred, cool irl, funny friendly and now becoming critically endangered. I've had a bad Ayahuasca experience after my 6th ceremony. I've suffered PTSD for about 2-3 months after but this is fine with me. I don't regret anything and I'm grateful for it now. This sometimes is a part of the psychedelic experience and you have to be aware of this.

Discernment is one of the toughest lessons on the spiritual path, especially if you are open, optimistic and naive. I used to be but my experiences have made me much more wary and cynical. The risk of abuse can be prevented if you film the session so if someone think they experienced abuse they can watch the video to see if it was just them tripping.
It doesn't prevent abuse in any way. A recording that provides evidence of what you experienced/and what was done to you while being at your most vulnerable. If s3x assault occurs and you re-watch it, well that is going to be a whole boatload of trauma and re-triggering. If it was all 100 above board then, no worries. Sensitivity varies widely from one person to the next. For sure 100mg is far too much for many people.
We generally dose between 70-100 mg. Bufo at 45 mg is a different experience. We do not consider that breakthrough dosing. Bufo contains small amounts of other alkaloids. You need a large dose to get the neurogenic benefit or you should stick with synthetic to conserve the toad 🐸🫶

Yeah I have to agree.. 5Meo might be a hard find, but regular DMT is very easy to extract / easier to buy i'd say. Doing it in the comfort of your own home, with things that keep you in this reality for the first trips, at least its not a one time thing like they do here. If you have some DMT you can start slow and work your way up, which in those scenarios, I think would be much better for people to process their trips. You can't be expected to somewhat make sense of an ego death on 100mg of 5meo if you've never taken 20mg of normal DMT, and been able to make sense of it. Eitherways Dr. Gerry giving them 90-100 Mg is absolutely prepostrous. 20 mg is already ego death territory let alone 90-100. The last ceremony with 40-45 mg made more sense, but it is still double the end spectrum of a strong dose.
Eitherways if anyone reads this and you think you need to travel around the world to do some ceremonies? No. you dont, all you need is half a gram of dmt, a bong, and however long you desire to experiment, and also, whenever, without the need to travel!

Exactly! When I journey, I know exactly who I want to sit for me (my closest and most awakened friends). I prefer to not be around strangers, and I don't want as close to sensory deprivation as possible (e.g., no sounds, no lights, etc.). At home or in a sacred place I know of, I can control all of these things. And yeah, the cost is way, way cheaper when you acquire the medicine yourself.
I've done bufo 3 times, while at an Iboga treatment center in Baja California Mexico. There are places that do it for way less $175, more like $25-$50.
I am an addict, have mental health issues, and complex PTSD from all the trauma I've gone thru.
My experiences were all good, thankfully. I cried harder then I ever let myself normally do every time and I felt soooo much better after. Calmer, less depressed. But as a woman, I would not recommend letting a man you don't know administer bufo to you. The 3rd time I did it I hesitantly let one of the men there do my ceremony, but my hesitance came from my overall distrust of men. I had known him for almost a month and it went ok.

I've never had bliss ceremonies, only hard ones and he was completely dedicated to the process. I had done many psychedelics in my 20s, in my 30s when my mental health got a lot worse I had to stop psychedelics as I would have a horrible experience on them.
I have had psychosis, not through taking psychedelics (jeez how many times am I going to say psychedelics)through mental health and abusing alcohol to try and get away from my mental issue and trauma.
At 42 I now meditate, have acupuncture and go to yoga, I also go to CBT groups and DPT groups which all have helped greatly with my mental health struggles and addiction to alcohol.
I would never touch a psychedelic again as my mind can not take something like that anymore, I have way to much trauma to now go back down that road and come out of it safely.

I was staying with an indigenous comminity in the jungle in Ecuador and I participated in 2 Aiahuasca ceremonies (I didnt take any), and the shaman took the tea with the other person. The idea is that the shaman is helpping you with the journey. And honestly, although the shaman took the Aiahuasca as well, he was still pretty lucid.
Rape culture in medicine circles is much more common than you may think. Ive sat in a handful of circles and am somewhat connected to my local medicine community but im not the most familiar/popular person here at all. Even ive heard several stories of circles that get wrapped into a cult like experience where women are manipulated and taken advantage of. Men are often pushed away which thats a big red flag if your facilitator is turning down men from joining "because the medicine said that it wasnt the right time for you" meanwhile not turning away any women lol. One girl i know got pulled in and next thing she knew she was living alone somewhere else, isolated, and her "shaman" was controlling her diet constatnly, guilting and shaming her for questioning whats going on, etc. I stick to my circle and dont care to find a new one. It is held by both a woman and a man at the same time and I feel very safe and cared for in their presence during the ceremonies ive done.

I was given 100mg for my first and only bufo experience. it was terrifying, but also beautiful. i would say it was definitely a positive experience however i have had no desire to do it again. i got some minor re-activation the night of the experience but other than that i would say the entire thing faded away and was forgotten pretty quick

With benzos, yes, there is a high risk of fatality or seizures, but NOT with the SSRIs they were mostly referring to in the segment.
SSRI’s are counteracting with bufo. No risk of any kind. It only increases one’s tolerance for bufo breakthroughs and a patient under SSRI’s will likely require higher dose.

I think as a spiritual shaman, he meant to imply that we are in a way responsible for everything that happens to us, whether if it’s just or not. That is part of what he is here to teach with his medicine, that there are things we cannot control but still we should try to individually heal our deep ancestral wounds that may be keeping us trapped in a negative cycle and eventually learn to take action to break free of that cycle. Of course simultaneously he is also human and he demonstrated his macho cultural understanding which unfortunately is what it is and may have been naturally reacting defensively to the accusatory tone of the journalist.. but still I do understand his point from a spiritual perspective.

as someone who has self-medicated for years, since i was a teenager, but also sought intensive PTSD/inpatient therapies as a young adult, who has plenty experience with MDMA, DMT, shrooms, and acid -- what makes me ponder the most about things like this, is just how truly vacant some of our hearts are. that we live in a stasis that doesn't harbor gratitude, self-care and self-love, that doesn't teach us throughout our lives the things that really matter to us as individuals, what heals us and makes us whole, what makes us the best version of ourselves to give to the world and to our loved ones. there is something all these people are looking for to be solved, a hole that needs filling, a lost heart that needs guidance, a voice that needs to feel heard. we're all just doing our best with the little we have, hoping to just survive another day through it all. only thing i can hope is that very few people are harmed, and that the practice gets safer for everyone.
I believe we are all trying fill a hole that can’t come from any of the things the world offers. We can let thy food be our medicine, but we should remember who created that food. Creation is a beautiful thing, but to disregard the Creator is the reason why we are all lost and seeking. We all have God sized holes in our hearts. As far as mental health goes I’m getting my masters and work as a therapist with our clients. When I am done with my masters and licensure I probably won’t do this work because of the liability. Without endorsing one side of the allegation or the other, and without judging anyone, if a person has CPR performed on them, it breaks many ribs and possibly the sternum. If you had CPR performed on you, there would be zero doubt about it after waking up and you’d immediately need to go to an emergency room.
I have zero doubt that she felt she experienced it that way… she was on an extreme hallucinatory, after all.
That makes it incredibly hard to sort out what people experienced on their trip and what actually happened, which is dangerous for everyone involved.

My experience on DMT was life changing in a good/bad way i thought i died and got in a thought loop of it in a dark room with figures dancing around me before i came too i thought about everyone i cared about.. then went back to a very colorful place that was the end of tripping for me. About a year after that experience i did some shrooms not my first time and had a very bad anxiety attack and can hardly smoke weed anymore without having anxiety.. didn't help me with anything just made me relize that family is more important that getting high and gambling with you life
I think this is what a lot of people underestimate. It can help in some ways, but also harm. I indeed find psychedelics calming, but it sure can be traumatizing and make you guess if you really learned something you did not already know

This is true. Can't speak for many but my docs have alway switched me off cold turkey never tapered. I had to tell them to do it. Mum's a nurse has seen patients on high doses of meds just cut off without a second thought of withdrawl
I stopped cold turkey..i had withdraws for a month to 2 months..just hots and cold symptems and fogginess and i never told my dr..im fine till this day

Stopping cold turkey can lead to a roller coaster of emotional changes in some people, and has been the cause of suicide. Again, just because one person stopped cold turkey and says they're fine, does not mean the next person will have the same experience. Seek the advice of your prescriber first, always.
I always find it funny how people always involve "talk to your doctor" about weening off medication while literally no doc has any clue about getting off medication . Don't get me wrong i totally agree with not suddenly stopping meds (usually) but for most not taking your anti depressant for a couple of days is fine . We ain't talking about benzo's here like that would be a completely different story .

I completely disagree with you. For thousands of years it has been common for shamans to also be under the influence at the same time. Why? So that they can be on the same wavelength and help guide the person better. Most Westerners do not understand these things because they're so used to the protocols of allopathic-medicine - which, unfortunately, almost always creates a sense of distance between the healer and the healed.

5 meo dmt is not the psychedelic to begin with as it is extremely powerful. Interestingly as or even more potent because much longer lasting you don't find much about iboga. Nevertheless psilocybin has a huge scientific backup.

I always enjoy and appreciate the drug related Vice documentaries, and particularly like Matt Shea's work.
Man for some reason I just weep with those who have been through so much and process it with them as they move through it, sometimes for the first time experiencing those things that were in the shadows and buried.
I’m super sensitive anyway, especially after my own spiritual awakening and it was a rough go for a time. But with help from others who could just hold the space and be with me in love and that ministry of presence that some can give, I found I could safely process and come through it without any chemicals.

Hi :) I had very intense sleep paralysis and low level psychosis after I took Bufo in February 2023. i think people who have difficulty letting go of things will have the worst experiences. because these drugs force you to let go. but some people will start fighting even harder, and that creates alot of pressure and turbulence.
It's been 3 years since I tripped on DMT, can't find a plug anywhere in my area. Back then, We used one of those vaporizers with the big bags. The first time I didn't do enough and I just seen shapes and colours. But the second time I managed to get another hit in before I got the light headed. I remember floating above the country side flying and then all of a sudden I zoomed down into a deer and went right inside of it and I was the veins and the blood and flowing through this deers body. It was very strange lol
