Memorial Hall, Dayton, Oh a million years ago, we went to see John play. He was alone. The crowd was talking and getting ready and he came out with a black acoustic guitar wearing a black suit and string tie, much younger than he is here, in his prime. He was pure class. When he stepped to the microphone the crowd went silent, and when he began to play his greatness, his talent, his music washed over the crowd. Every song brought rousing cheers and applause.
He was the greatest lone entertainer I ever had the good fortune and honor to see.
He would look over the crowd and make eye contact with lots of people, only for a moment.. I caught him looking at me and waved, and got a wink and a little smile. It was like he knew my brother and I played a lot of his songs and loved them all.
America lost her poet and guitar player the day he passed. Rest in Paradise, John.
    We all love ya.

That was beautiful. Thank you. I got turned onto JP in 1975 as a seventeen year old. Fortunately, i grew up in Chicagoland and saw him in the pubs in Chicago all through college and beyond. I got to meet him in 2000 and it reinforced all my feelings about this kind, funny, and humble man. He's influenced me for almost fifty years now and I still listen to him almost every day. Love walks with me.

I had to put my dog of 14 years down on Tuesday. I brought her to the woods behind my house, a place that she loved. I buried her there. I came home and found out John had passed. I am an atheist but good god I wanted to picture John walking her to somewhere better. I want to think that she sits and listens to him play his timeless music. They are both feeling no pain.

This can be a chance to believe that maybe...*just maybe* there is something special going on here in your life. In this life. Your perception can consider it as slight silver linings , which can lead to defined lines.. or it can be considered as two personally-inflicted tragedies that happened to only you on thay day.. one will plant seeds for positivity and one will start you down a road where yoir breaks get cut. You may not need a defined sense of "God" in a traditional religious sense (many do not) to find the hope for something better in this world/life as it hurdles speed bumps towards your seemingly steady stride.. many do not. But I promise - even if its believing in yourself... we all need something to believe in. It is fundamental to our existence.. even if the belief is simply allowing oneself to exist within the turmoil of it all. To each their own.
But I am enjoying picturing the image of your dog wagging their tail while John is standing with him/her happily smiling down at you playing music for you whenever you need it. I believe they are together - wherever we go when we go where we go. Stay strong ! And keep getting stronger.

From Ann Powers' remembrance of John Prine, who died yesterday at the age of 73: “He hadn’t been well, off and on, for many years, but he also seemed oddly indestructible. Everyone’s love and need for his presence wove protection around him. But we are living in a time when no concept of protection seems adequate. Acknowledging that, I turned to Prine’s music. This is how we honor our losses as music fans: by holding close the recordings that keep a voice resonant past mortality.” Click here to read the full remembrance: n.pr/34ixO20

I met him in his later years. Once. He was a saint of a man, gave an unknown folk musician such encouragement. The one thing I will always treasure was him saying "Go on, play my songs. But make them yours. If you sing like you mean it I'm not going to object..." When I heard we had lost him I cried. Hard. Then I played "That's The Way The World Goes Round" in my next set and I heard him laughing.

Heard an interview where John was talking about his first show after his surgery where he was unsure of how his voice would hold up. He said he had a little trouble with it, but the crowd was really behind him and pushed him through it, a tear came to his eye and he got choked up. Not afraid to wear his heart out where anyone can see it, just like his songs.

Being a life long songwriter folks had always told me about John prine, for 20 years prolly, sadly I didn't give a listen until I heard that he had died from covid, to make long story short for the past 4 years I sit and cry and listen to his songs that are the best ever written three to five times a week and shoot myself in the foot that I didn't go see him live and pay attention while he was still alive. Moral of the story listen to anyone that anyone tells you is good while they're alive so you can go and see them. I don't think there was ever a better songwriter than John hearing his music changed my life.
