Instructions unclear: bought z790 dark hero.
Dank.
Mistakes were made!
LOL
What about z790 formula?
Same 😂
1000 percent people need to contact Asus and all other companies when this stuff happens. For the greater good!
Hi,
Love your videos - straight and to the point.
I'm on the verge of buying an apex encore... I'm really keen on knowing what do you think of it, and is it a wise choice.
I'm coming from a very very bad experience with the gigabyte aorus master z790.
Thank you for reply.
Check the fine print and see if it says 8000mhz but for only 1 dimm, that's what msi does they advertise 7800mhz, but then when you go in and you actually read everything and you read the fine print it's only for a single dimm and the more dimms you have in the board the lower the megahertz goes
Why even bother making a motherboard supporting 8000mhz only on one dimm when most ppl will use 2 or 4 🤷🏻♂️
Thank you!!! I am new to the channel, and this would be my 2nd build ever i am fishing around to find a new mobo, i really wanted to get this board but as you have shown here that this board ain't it . What is a good board for doing animation/simulations inside Blender since i this board isn't any good?
What board would you recommend that's kind of similar to this one?
What's your opinion of ASRock motherboards for ram overclocking the 2 dimm z690 aqua seems like a decent option with how limited 2 dimm boards are for z690/z790
Appreciate that the intent of this video is from a RAM overclocker, noting its issues with meeting marketed RAM Clock speeds, but the inference I took from it was what sold me on the encore. In saying that, I have both the Apex encore and dark hero and I actually find the Dark Hero is better for several reasons, and so will most ethusiasts who don't really stuff around with RAM overclocking bar adjusting it to its respective XMP profile.
For CPU overclocking, the Dark Hero is still up there as one of the best for consideraiton. Other factors that I consider making the Dark Hero better:
- Much easier to build with: More Fan Headers, USB ports, Integrated Graphics out for if you have a non F model CPU, more space to work for cable routing which includes when utilising an AIO.
- Much more conventional NVME drive lay out
- No use of a DDR like module to use additional NVME drives - I (as well as a colleague who bought the same board) had the same issues - it would corrupt drives, be unweildly to work with.
TDLR:
- If you solely want to do ram overclocking, look at the Apex noting the above caveats.
- For everyone else, the dark hero is better.
Thank you jufes and the supporters.
So what gaming board, professional video and audio do you suggest in Asus line up?
Came for the content. Stayed for the kitty.
Got an apex encore with 14900k ! What max speed can i use for 64gb ram kit on these to run stable ?
What does improper voltages mean? Isn't tuning signal IO part and parcel depending on the CPU?
Bro what is the best stable 7200+ ram should I buy for my Asus strix z790-e?
Glad I snagged another z690-i the other week for $180. Paired with 14900K sp95 + 96GB + 3090oc = awesome micro workstation/gaming rig. Even these z690-i's will boot and run 7200 on 6800 XMP timings + 1.4v, but run cooler at 6400 + tighter timings + lower voltage. Same latency either way
1.4v? Jesus, hope that's stable.
On one had Asus is promoting the 8k mhz and on the other had you got Juan Jose Guerrero telling every it depends on CPU and board. This practice has been going on forever by all the MB manufactures, as soon as they set a world record, they want to promote the fastest speeds
keep up with the good content.
Dumb question here. Is it possible to add "dumby" memory sticks with caps or something to increase the stability of the other 2 sticks?
Is it Vdroop... on the Dark Hero???? Or do you think its the lanes??? crosstalk???
can’t wait to see Jufes push the newer Asrock Z790 boards🤞🏼
Can you boot into Windows using XMP 1 with two G Skill 24 gb 8000 mhz ram sticks? I know that if you use 4 dimms of ram, 8000 mhz xmp is difficult but what if I only use two sticks of 8000 mhz ram on the Dark Hero? I need integrated graphics and quick sync.
I feel good about running my z790 tomahawk at “only” 7200 now, nice review
You might be able to do 7400. At least mine doesm
What motherboards and brands do you recommend for AMD and Intel? I'm going to go to MSI, but in my case, AMD doesn't go to DDR5 8000 on Zen 4.
The folks who want fast RAM should stick with 2 slot motherboards.
It seems that Asus has gone downhill over the past few years.
Great testing. I've done QVL 12700KF and 12900KF, not really impressed on Z690, did 3 DDR5 builds on 12th and once 14th released well it honestly feels like a money pit. Asus Z690 was also not great though maybe it is the controller, I could drop a 14th gen chip in (did BIOS updates) but idk, sometimes it is better to wait or something. My B760M wasn't much better for my media one.
is there a something up with the m.2 1st slot and gpu slot ?
Hey Dufus, just wondering if you test any itx boards and how they hold up vs "premium" 4-dimm motherboards
he tested z790i edge and z690i unify
@@maximus3294 Thank you. I'll look for them.
I have a 4090 already, can I still do the bundle, with gpu excluded?
Thanks you answered all my questions. i just bought this board w/ 7200 kingston renagade
Hello! Are the same conclusions valid for Z790 Hero (previous non Dark Hero)? I noticed in the ASUS website that the "clean" Hero is tested with much more RAM modules than the Dark variant that is normal considering the current life of these two MB.
I actually plan 2x48GB running at 6400 (or 6800) MT/s. That would be enough for me.
hey did you end up doing this build and it worked? I am in the same pickle right now, thanks
Looking forward to the Nova testing. I have one with a 12600k. Team Create A die 7200 32GB kit that was $109 USD on Amazon. So far I'm at 6200 1.25v 38 38 38 78 which is of course fairly loose but I want to see how far it will go at such a low voltage. Totally stable at least! I have yet to punch in the xmp 1.4v 34 42 42 84 settings on this CPU /mobo to see if it posts or is stable.
With 12600k you're at the mercy of the weaker 12th gen memory controller. Why not test what's the highest frequency you can manage first and then tune the timings.
@@Ben-ld1qi^ the method for any kind of oc is to step over the line, then step back bit by bit until stable. it results in less steps overall. loose initial timings are the way
@@maximus3294 That's exactly what I meant by finding max frequency and what was implied! Have had experience with the Apex, Hero and Extreme and other Z790 more budget 4-DIMMers. There are so many factors that come into play, it's a headache... Certain beta BIOSes on the Extreme allowed for 7800 fully stable with others didn't go over 7400 at all. Also need to watch out for high Auto voltages like when he had the screen freeze, that was due to high VCCSA on Auto.
But yeah as a general rule when first testing the waters for highest frequency I always run loose primaries, leaving secondary and tertiary on Auto, but even then it's advised to take note at higher frequencies 8000+ sometime the motherboard sets tRDWR_sg/dg at 20 on Auto when it needs ~22 to pass.
On the non refresh Hero, it needed IVR TX (known as CPU VDDQ on other boards) to be equal or higher as DRAM VDD for things to work, for even 7200 be stable. Every motherboard as its own niche. I don't know about any niches the new Dark Hero might have but I'm sure Jufes is experienced enough to figure things out for himself. But with that said, I wouldn't be surprised if fellow overclockers on overclock(.)net will probably post their stable 7800 overclocks on the Dark Hero soon, albeit it might take a bios mod or future BIOS revisions to do so.
On MSI Z790 Tomahawk, while advertised as 7200, it surprisingly managed 7400 stable across all CPUs that I've tested. A few other Tomahawk owners also reported 7400 on A-Die.
With all that said, I feel like that DDR5 marketing both for the boards and the XMP its sold at are very difficult for the average user that simply wants to buy something, run XMP on it without have to manually tune anything.
So far the Nova is the only 4 dimm board I've used that does 8000 stable, 8200 fully benchable and 8400 makes it into windows and passes less mem intensive tests
@@gtijason7853 very impressive, this on 2x16 or 2x24? if
Top man, what happen ehit MemTest Button used to be so easy to overclock the hell out of ram stick now days cant even get it work at xmp clocks madness😅😂
I got the formula plan to run at 7200 with 2x16 g skill trident is it possible to just enable the xmp 3.0 and go will someone please inform me
This sounds similar to vehicle window stickers. The sticker tells you what MPG you can expect, city and road driving. Then, it tells you that your MPG may vary. ASUS tells you the highest memory speed this MB supports. They should, like the MPG car sticker, tell you that your memory speed may vary. If you believe that ASUS has tested every memory module on their GVL on this MB, I have some lovely oceanfront property in Kansas I'd like to sell you.
What about ASUS ROG Strix Z790-F Gaming WiFi ? Any good ?
Please do a review on the AORUS Z790 Master. I just got this board and have had nothing but issues with it and it's a nut hair shy of a 600-dollar board. I can't even get 7200mhz running stably on this board. Just found your channel and your channel is full of great information.
You could RMA the board and fafo another board to see if there is a wide variance in mb binning
i do believe there is nothing in between the CPU and RAM other than tracers. But I'm no expert
Frame Chaser what is the best z790 motherboard from asus apex og 😊
But doesnt the processor's website show what mhz the ram ought to be at per model? Perhaps the motherboard is just saying it can withstand those limits, even though ones processor's may not be able to take the workload to the heights the motherboard can stand.
Was just about to execute on this mobo! Vid was just in time for me, thanks Jufes!!
Thanks So much man.... I was actually going to use this on my next build. It's one thing to overpay for something you want, such crap to be lied to and robbed!
Is msi a good choice?
so is it just a ram issue and nothing else? or is there other issues that you didnt cover?
How do you only have 27k subs? Your information is worthy of millions

I bought a Nova and a 14900k. But I never had any intention of running 8000mhz ram. I just wanted a good MB for the money with decent features. It runs my current Corsair Dominator Platinum just fine. I hope, when you do test it, it WILL run 8k memory. Give me something to strive for! Your content is awesome!
thanks was about to buy as encore wasnt available, got old apex instead for 350 gg. where do i donate
Just bought a z790 Hero from Amazon for 310 bucks. I know it can't hit 8000k...but for the price...it can hit 7200mhz....so im good with that, going on a 12900k.
Maximus Hero? I have MH with 13900k and crashes with 76000mhz. 7200 crashes as well. I have cod on 6400mhz stable
I’m wondering, which would be faster, 61,61,59,59,59,59,59,59 or 60 all core?
Find it hard to stabilize on 60 all core for some reason..

You should maybe calculate the difference 5900 vs 6000 differences really are % wise.... and then ask urself... if its 59x or 60x stable after all... what then?
Whats the goal? Is it even worth giving a shit about 100Mhz here and there... its not going to CHANGE THE GAME... CPU wise.
Its a LOT of f*cking around but you know that so....
Jufes has videos on sweetspots and best practices.. sounds like ur at the end of the curve and are in diminishing returns.
hey joodoos i got some of the timmy slayer parts and a 6800xt (cuz im broke lol), is it good enough for 1440peee? i want one of those sexy ass oled screens
Yes a 6800xt is equivalent to a RX 7800xt so it’s great for 1440p.

He says it in the video. The app is from Karhu Software.
I hate that QVL lists exist and aren't accurate. I do love seeing kitty going for a walk, always nice to see.
Thank good we have this guy. Jufes i have the same problem with my Z790-E u know , it can’t go above 7200. With or withouth XMP. So know i will take your word and RMA it! so my great question is: which mother board supports 8000mhz and 4 dimms?
I’m gonna wait on the new Tachyon
Can confirm memory issues with this board. Actually just ordered another kit of differemt ram to see if that works. CMH64GX5M2B6400C32 from Corsair does not work and locks at 4800, and when xmp is on I get the same blue screen he does or a Red Warning message that the bios has been tampered with. Even at 4800 with this kit, inside windows it's constant crashes and access violations.
I'm glad I waited for this review, was planning on getting this motherboard.
Same here because it's on Amazon for like 350

OMG that ending with the Nova... LMFAO 🤣 These brands need to get their shit together if they want to charge this much!
Guess my only overcloking option is ASUS ENCORE Z790. I would like an Apex 1, but it's sold out and out of print. Damn...
I would love to know where to get that memory cooler, Fram Chasers, brother.
I want to buy a new Motherboard, which one you can recommend me to buy.
The cpu is i9 14900ks and Ram is DDR5 8000
Which DDR5 work properly on this motherboard? I checked 2x32GB G.Skill 6000 (QVL) and they don't work. 2x32GB Corsair 6600, they only work stable on 4400. The 13900KS processor died after a month. 14900K only works limited to 5.4Ghz. What's the problem? The Asus ProArt Creator Z790 motherboard in my wife's computer has the same problems. 🤯
4:07 'you can't just take my word for it'.....
Well Jufes, i do.
And a lot of people with me i believe.
I like your t-shirt motive and the painting :)
I can run 7200 stable on my 12900k and Z690 hero. I got a z790 dark hero to try after my first apex was DOA and it isn't even stable at 7200 with a sp107 14900k at 7200 with a kit that does 8000 on the x670 gene.
Tell me about it, mines barely stable at 7200mhz
Uhoh, I got a z690 PG riptide :C cant wait to see how bad everything is now, i wish i found your channel a lot sooner.
The QVL lists are real but with a catch. They are done with pre-binned ES CPUs. 100s of CPU to find one that can do 8000 on 4-slot. Its possible, but basically you need a 8400 IMC (2-slot) for 8000 4-slot to work. The motherboard itself "can" do it, under the right circumstances, but not the average joe for sure. You also did XMP1, which ignores the SPD data besides the primaries in favor of better "ASUS" values. Basically a mini OC applied to the ram on top of the XMP profile. You want to always use XMP2
That's crazy since I bought a Z790-E on 13th gen release (I'm dumb and should have waited for reviews and 2 DIMM mobos) and I'm running 7467 cl34.
You save me money man! I return it that day when I comment. I should of waited until you did your review.
is it possible that your board was somehow defective? are other users with a dark hero able to achieve over 7000/7400 stable ?

It is really not only Asus, I have a GigaByte DDR5 that is supposed to handle 7600Mhz and that is fine. I also bought 4 x 16Gb and I had it working at the speed my RAM was sold at (6000Mhz) but the board froze, the OS blue screened, I send all the memory back and bought 2 x 32Gb, also 6000Mhz. I got Patriot memory and the darn thing has been rock solid since last night. I do not need to overclock it, 6000Mhz is fine by me, as long as it can run stable. QVL is just as much a scam as the 80+ Gold is on the PSU market. Rubber stamp it, nobody will care. I am still not sure if I am keeping this motherboard, Amazon has great return policies.
but are you saying not to buy due too that only reason yess understand the false info. but if I am not overclocking my ram higher then 5200 mhz is this board worth it
Is 7000 on 4 dimms possible?
Duh it's got the 4 DIMM slots. I was shocked when this board came out more expensive than the Apex Encore. SO I got the Encore and run 8000 no problem
Curious to see what the Nova can do. That board is being pushed hard everywhere. Just need another budget option, the Z790i Edge is great for 7600-7800 no stress memory OCs. But they look hilarious in bigger cases.

Great video thanks!
4 ram slots haha no fuc$en way it’s doing 8,000. Although I bet they managed to somehow get it to work one time for a very short period of time so that they could say it’ll do 8,000. Or maybe not I don’t know if they need to backup claims or they can just say whatever they want. I can get 8000 no problem but on an EVGA Dark Kingpin 790 that’s actually made for that.
It will get 7600mhz with great tunning and if your lucky 7800mhz.
Thanks for your hard work, looks like you’re running Windows 10? Wouldn’t Windows 11 scheduler work better with 14th gen P cores and. E cores? If you can talk to an ASUS motherboard Engineer, the Maximus Hero, The Dark Hero, and the Formula all share a poor memory lead layout to make room for everything else on the board.
If you want a board that will actually run faster ram on the QVL list 7200-8000mhz you need to buy the Rog Strix Z790-E 7200mhz cl34 fastest I have seen is 7600-7800 G.Skill kits but that was on a diamond lottery 13900ks+hand picked G.Skill kits, APEX/APEX Encore. The Maximus hero/Dark Hero, Extreme and Formula are super dependent on the IMC quality since their memory lead layouts well are abysmal.
Thanks for the video. I purchased the AMD 7950X3D and mated it to the X670E Crosshair Extreme with a Strix RTX 4090 OC. I have had nothing, but issues for six months. AMD is fighting me on RMA of the CPU and I am Waiting for a response from ASUS. The Crosshair Extreme is the most unstable MB I have ever owned I am not able to get the board to operate even at stock speed of the AMD 7950X3D. So unstable with the DDR5 . ASUS has about lost me as a return customer after dropping 6k for all components after custom building PC for myself and others I could never again recommend an ASUS Product. Was looking to go to the Z790 Dark Hero because I have the ASUS G701 and the Ryujin III RGB that is less than 6 months old. Looks like I am taking a huge loss will look at MSI but wary as I left MSI years ago due to failures on the MBs, The only thing to pass all testing is the Corsair DDR5 Dominator x2 by 32
They're gonna need to release a half decent bios revision for that board that will properly set the default voltages. Probably too low imc voltage and too high system agent at default to stabilize anything over 7400. 7800 is the best I've ever done on the OG hero with a specific beta bios and about 2 weeks of fafoing and misery.
Thanks for sharing. Yeah I had the OG Hero and it has its own niche with voltages and requires certain BIOSes otherwise over 7200 doesn't always work.
What about a binned MC that does 8800. Would that make up some difference?
@@stevog893 in order to push speeds like that you're talking about winning the lotto on binned CPU/Ram kit/motherboard. All 3 have to be golden samples to achieve that and your still looking at pushing an ungodly amount of voltage. I also have no idea how good the scaling is on ddr5 beyond 8200. At some point there is always diminishing returns.
Edit: You also have to be running a 1 dimm per channel board.
@@Ben-ld1qi which bios do you use for the Hero ? here i can't do barely better than 6933 with 7600 DDR5
@@barome7236 I already sold it many months ago so I don't remember. The first Hero didn't even do 7200 y-cruncher VST stable. I then had the board replaced through warranty for another Hero. I also read Igor's Lab Z790 Hero review (google it) wherw he succeeds 7800 stable, and he mentions it's important to have IVR TX at least the same or higher as the DRAM VDD. This allowed me to achieve 7200 but I didn't manage higher. From what it seems the Hero version is very dependent on specific BIOS versions and doesn't easily do 7600+ on just about any revision.
Thank you very much for the video, I was about to buy the board and now I'm really unsure.
Do you have a good alternative to the board with which I can connect 2 RTX 4090 graphics cards?
Many thanks in advance
I have this mortherboard with 2x RTX 4090 and it works just fine. Just don't use the M2_1 slot otherwise the second PCIe 5.0 for the second GPU won't work. Use the M2_2 CPU slot for your system drive. And the Chipet slots M2_3, M2_4 and M2_5 for the rest.
