Progress to an advanced level of guitar playing - bulletproofguitarplayer.com Overdrive and distortion units are the one type of pedal that I don't think I'll ever stop buying. I love experimenting with different OD and distortion pedals and today I'm showing you five of my current favourites.
Including:
- The Suhr Eclipse - a distortion pedal with two identical circuits that you can switch between with the dual footswitches. High gain, amp-in-a-box style tones.
- The 'Steel String Clean Drive' by Vertex - an overdrive pedal based on the Dumble Steel String Singer, a very rare Dumble amp used by the likes of Stevie Ray Vaughan, John Mayer and Eric Johnson.
- The 'RevivalDRIVE Compact' from Origin Effects. I recently produced a demo of this amp-in-a-box style overdrive that's capable of reproducing the sound of several classic tube amps from Fender, Marshall and Vox.
- The 'ODR-Mini' by Nobels - based on the original Nobels ODR-1 that first arrived on the market in 1985. This unique sounding overdrive is it's own thing. It's not a tubescreamer. It's not a Klon. It's just... different. Famously used by players like Gary Moore, Jerry Donahue and Guthrie Trapp, it continues to be a mainstay on the pedalboards of countless session guitarists around the world.
- The 'Bonsai' by JHS Pedals - every tubescreamer circuit in one pedal... really! This all-analogue overdrive contains nine tubescreamer-style circuits in the one box. Expect all of the usual Ibanez models like the TS808, TS9, TS7 and TS10, as well as a few oddities including the Keeley and JHS modded versions.

Love it dude. Ive been looking at those steel string pedals more and more
Thanks Robert!
@@RossCampbellGuitarist just getting into the Steel String now. Curious if you'd run it before or after a Tube Screamer style OD pedal?? If trying to replicate a John Mayer strat tone 🙂
Paul Crichton Not sure about John Mayer but I've always placed tubescreamers after any other drives in my chain.
@@eternalforce116 before, ts on for solos
i love drive pedals. you can combine endlessly. you've got this guitar and that amp, this day and that mood. tone is ethereal and essential. it's like finding out which shirt and which perfume combine to being me at present.
Thx for the video... love to get a little more on the difference between OD and Distortion, and the application of each from you some time...
Awesome content man!! The playing, the tones, video work and all are perfect!
Your videos keep getting better! I really like the editing format you used on this one!
Thank you for saying that :)
Cool choices, dude. Been thinking about getting the vertex for awhile.
Also dig the mvp. One of my favorite amps ever. Good to see it getting some love.
Cheers
Ricardo Lima Pereira 🙏
Great choices Ross!
Great selection! I've been playing the Suhr Eclipse for quite a while now. It sounds very amplike and works with all of my amps. I run the pedal on 18 volt for more headroom. A keeper!
How is the Noise-floor on the Eclipse? I love the idea of 2 separate drives = 1 for lite-dirty rhythm & 1 for scorching Leads !!!
Nice playing. I liked all the tones equally well. That is a nice sounding Strat as well
Ross your playing is really inspirational man. You offer so much to the online guitar community with your lessons and these free videos. I think you’d do really well for yourself out in Nashville if that was ever a consideration. You’re every bit as good as some of these other UA-camrs who do studio and stage work out there.
Nashville is 100% the plan and I'm working on it. Thank you for saying that!
Great set up Ross. I Really enjoy your videos man. Great content And I Just get the way u teach and explain things. And Yeah that blues breaker tone was definitely the best 😎👍
Thanks!
Just got the Revival Drive Compact. It’s simply amazing.
My favorite combo hudson broadcast dual + feel the tone ms-sov 2
Great video. I thought the Suhr Eclipse with the Strat sounded fantastic. Also Bonamassa's bridge to better days on the revival drive was pretty sweet.
These are just great tone, that even I want to try these pedals and I own a Katana Artist.
I hear ya. Just spend all Saturday afternoon going through a bunch of drives for my DI rig. Tried a Jekyll & Hyde V2, a Fulltone FD-3 but they weren't working out, finally settled on a switchable Octavia-type Fuzz then, for drives, I went with a Catalinbread Dirty Channel>Greer Little Samson>Wampler Tumnus>Joyo British (preamp pedal)>IR loader (mods/time-based effects excluded, ofc). Still not totally satisfied, I think next time I'll swap out the Catalinbread and Tumnus for a dual, the Jetter Jetdrive V2. It's similar to the Suhr in that it's basically two more or less identical circuits in one. It's reliable, always sounds good into any amp or if I have to DI.
I'd really liked that Nobels ODR-1. I want one of those and a Wampler Paisley, but $$$!!
I can so much relate..., OD and or Distortion pedals never get boring... very nice playing again... :-)
Thanks!
Great video man! Definitely would like to ask about the steel string into the nobles but also into the revival compact as far as boost gain/saturation, does do that well too?
They all sound cool Ross. Think I'll demo a Bonsai one o' these days. Thanks a lot!
Great vid and great playing. Would love to see a tutorial vid on some of your blues noodling. 🙂
Thank you!
My rig is set up is with boss pedals and Pedalboards is. Tu-2,MD-2,SD-1,BD-2,NS-2,DD-3,CH-1and Straight Through my Bugera V-22 1-12 combo tube and with eminence Red Coat 150 watt speaker 🔊
PedalPalFx PAL 034 Night Overdrive. Handmade in Venezuela--Marshall JCM 800 mimic. A great addition to what you have.
Those are all great sounding pedals. You are a great player who knows how to use the sounds. Great amp, and it responds very well to all those pedals. I saw your post about the revival drive, and it is amazing at adding color to the tone in so many ways. Top three: Revival, Bonsai, Nobels
Thank you very much!
I know this is a meme driven a mile down into the ground by now (mostly by Josh at JHS) but honestly, if you haven't tried a JHS Klon, you're missing out. I've had at least 20 high end drive pedals come and go across my pedal board and no matter what amp I'm playing through, the Klon just kills it. It has literally zero bells and whistles but when it comes on, something happens to the sound that no other pedal (including 4 other highly regarded klon clones like a Tumnus deluxe and Archer) can replicate.
Disclaimer - I never use drive pedals on a clean amp. It's always used as a boost on a moderately driven amp.
Also disclaimer - I have a revival drive hotrod pedal coming because I can't just stay happy with one pedal...
Great videos, and guitar playing. What Pups are you using in the strat, fat fifty’s?
Steel String and the OCD are a sweet combo as well!
Jac Kelshaw yes!!!!!
Awesome video. I've got both the steel string and the bonsai, how would you pair those two to get the best tone out of the two? Thanks!
I use the overdrive of my amp and I stop thinking too much about it from that point on. I just don't see the point in trying to exactly replicate someone's sound (anymore). To give an example, yesterday I started singing songs more on ''my own'' voice, and I was enjoying myself more. I think it's because if you try to replicate someone's sound, your mind is subconsciously busy with that. And because of this, you can't focus on your playing that much, just a thought though.
Great video. Have you experienced too much noise from the Nobels particularly when after pedals with a bit of gain? Mine it is noisy so it restrains what I can do with it. Thanks.
Great video Ross, Love your Mayer tones. I enjoy the EHX Soul Food for the price, but I’d love to try the Steel String for this style.
Rich Hoffman 👌
Cool! I've heard good things about the Soul Food.
Another great video by the man with the best accent on UA-cam! Well I guess its not an accent if you live where Ross is from!
Haha, thanks so much!
Hey Ross. How does the nobels odr mini stack with revival drive compact. I own the revival drive compact and juat ordered a odr mini. Just wondering if you ever stacked them. Thanks man great video and great playing
I like them all great playin. I like the steal string also. Ive been using a boss ds1,its ok and i can get alot out of it but its starting to get old tho. I like to get a really overdriven sustain sound. Wat pedal would u recommend for somthing semi dis to all out old school metal . I play bluesy also so i need somthing versatile and not change a bunch of setti gs rather use my guitar tone and volume for my dominate change
What do you think about Nobels combined with Revival? Is it a good joint for pushing Revival to a more agressive sound? Thanks and great video bro!
So is your amp run super clean or edge of break up? I ask because I want to know if the Suhr would still sound good in front of a slightly broken up amp. Thanks!
What's that watch? Looks really nice.
That Bonsai sounds superb
Ross , do your self a favour and try the Bogner xtc blue mini pedal , I think you'll really like it !
Great vid Ross! That Revival Drive is a stand out for sure!
Cheers Shawn!
As one who loves soloing in the kind of Blues and Rock lead, I can completely sympathize with you here man! I love OD and distortion, because honestly electric guitar would not be electric guitar without either. Awesome video!
"Without" either.
@@lolobuggah2670 Ahh ye, apologies for that mistake. Thank ye
Thank you!
@@RossCampbellGuitarist You are welcome man!
Ross? Whats a good overdrive thats not harsh clip and mainly a positive harmonic with little to no hiss????? Ive been using an od1 handmedown from zac and set it like he does. But it pinches down or rather, narrows its frequency responce. Thin
Great video ! Funny enought I have the same amp as yours, and like the same pedals. I would replace the Bonzai with a Duellist (allowing me to also have a Blues Breaker Type pedal). But that would not give me your fingers :)
I’m not a pedal guy. The drive in my JVM suits me and for my pro junior I have an OCD clone by Joyo. I once owned a Seymour Duncan Twin Tube overdrive and I have regretted trading it for years. It was to me the best overdrive/distortion pedal I ever used by a considerable margin. If you haven’t tried one I suggest you try to find one. Peace
I’m with you, the ODR mini on its own & with the Steel String
Yes I'll never stop buying them
One day I might use one
muy bien gracias
Hey Ross, check the "Leqtique" pedals by Shun Nokina, Japanese handwired pedals with a decent amount of drives to choose from their catalogue and they sound amazing.
Cool, hadn't heard of those until now.
Rikku Shiraishi I have one. They’re great. They’re hard to get here now though in the U.S. Too bad because they’re great sounding. He does a swirly paint job too but he needs to coat it. It chips.
@@robertwellington2616 Yeah, it's the only downside of the pedals, I feel like it's almost a sacrilege to use it with my feet hehe. I have the 9/9 distortion and love it!! Also want to get my hands on the Maestoso and roch overdrives ¿Wich is the one you have?
The steel string is incredible! Could you tell me what kind of pickups do you use in your strat?
Juan Carlos Granados yes 🔥🔥🔥
I'm honestly not too sure. It's a Fender Custom shop 60s model, and they're the original pickups. I made a video about the other guitar on my channel where I showed the spec sheet so it'll be in there somewhere. Just search my channel for 'new guitar' and you should find it.
love the pedals but i'm more excited to see another mvp23 player!
The mini nobles continuous to appear on Nashville session players? I here a lot about the original nobels. Didn’t realize the mini was also in the sessions.
Was more talking about the ODR-1 but from what I understand, there's not a whole lot of difference between the two circuits.
Ever since I bought a greenback loaded bassbreaker 15 I just haven't felt the need for adding any additional Solid State overdrive... When I learned that pedals are just solid state circuits that try to emulate the sound of natural tube amp distortion, I figured it made mores sense to just find a tube amp that I liked the sound of. I just don't understand the point of having a nice tube amp, and then essentially only using it to cleanly amplify your solid state distortion pedal tone?
I love both experiences. The amp I'm using in this video is a classic rock monster when you turn up the gain and volume. It sounds great without drive pedals but I also really like having a palette of different overdrive and distortion circuits to work with.
The RevivalDrive also mimics a cranked power section. I would both damage my ears and get the cops called on me if I tried that at home. An attenuators or sending to a cab simulator isn’t preferred or adequate for some.
Ross-is that the strat that had the Dimarzio pups in it?
Hey Ross, what is that CS Strat you play, reissue year, specs etc?... Have you made a video on it :-)
60's relic model. Search 'new guitar' on my channel and you should find a video about it that I posted not long after it came into my possession.
Great video Ross! I have a sorta unrelated question though. How do you make those nice, smooth jazz backing tracks in the beginning of your videos? Especially brass sections. Thanks!
Thanks! I get most of my background music from a website called Epidemic Sound. I'm not affiliated with them but it's very easy to find all sorts of background music/sfx on their site.
@@RossCampbellGuitarist Thanks man!!
That lick from 1:56-2:12 is sooooo spicy. Can we get a lesson? :)
very nice video! How do you set your MVP for OD pedals ? Thanks
Thank you. I tend to set it so that it's on the edge of breakup. As for the EQ, I'll just dial that in by ear and adjust as I play
Ross Campbell thank you !
Love the Nobels and the Steel String. I'd highly recommend the wampler tweed 57 if you've never tried one. It's my desert island pedal. Thanks for the video 👍🤟
Sweet! Wampler pedals are great. Haven't added one to my collection so far but I'm sure I will before too long.
Like the Suhr, Vertex and the Nobels ... Cheers!
Would you cover boost pedals too? Grazie
If I have acquire enough boost pedals to warrant such a video, then sure :)
I USE THE STEEL STRING WITH A TS9, TUMNUS DELUXE AND ALWAYS ON MXR CARBON COPY INTO A MORLEY ABC INTO A ML DEVILLE A TWIN REVERB WITH A BJ JR IN FRONT FAT SWITCH ON PLAYED WITH STRATS, TELE AND A LP STD WHAT TONES ENJOYED UR VID 👍🔥🎸🦅
I'll bet that sounds real nice. Thanks!
Just curious, why not the regular size Nobels Odr1?
I met the guys from Nobels in LA back in January and they pretty much just handed me one of these. I'm sure the regular one sounds great too
Personally I love the JHS angry Charlie ,Wampler Tumnus along with an ego comp
When you say the pedal adds "body" what does that mean? More bass? Mids? Low mids?
Low-mids I guess. It sounds full and heavy, but not in a 'heavy metal' sorta way.
Anyone else think the steel sting and mini combo sounded like Eric Johnson's lead tone?
I believe that if you try the Mojo Mojo you would be pleasantly surprised
Where do you run the Cali76 on your board, first?
Currently last. But I realised ages ago that it's a dumb idea to have it after reverb/delay. Too lazy to rip my board apart but when I feel like it I'll eventually put it after the drives/before the 'verb.
Surprisingly I've been digging the old Boss SD-2. Love the dual channel and the function of remove to switch between the two. Only drawback is that I wish I could play something decent 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
You cannot go wrong with Boss pedals! In fact, the first circuit on the Bonsai is based on the Boss OD-1.
Steel String!!!! Woohoo 🥳
Ross, have you tried a nice Klon circuit like the RYRA, what are your thoughts on those?
I've tried out the Archer Ikon from J. Rockett. It sounded so good.
That Vertex pedal pops up in a lot of YT vids....
ckjjclan yep... and i just don‘t see the value of it. in addition i don‘t really trust vertex pedals
@@chasedowndreams6253 lol what?
DEFEKT vertex had some really huge issues in the past. from copying / cloning other pedals to selling pedals that have 0 impact on the tone. with the steel string they say they remodeled a dumble amp whereas it is just a simple booster psb
@@JackR617 tbh I could care less. I purchased the steel string myself after watching countless demos and first testing it myself. To say it does nothing would mean your ears are made of tin. I think it's a great product, but I can't speak for any other vertex products.
DEFEKT where did I say it sounded like nothing? I’m
Happy for you enjoy it. If you can’t understand what I wrote I’d say you’re probably not the sharpest knife in the drawer. My ears are pretty good. I had the dynamic distortion. I never once said anything sounded like nothing re the steel whatever stinger. Never once. You just made that up. The DD sounded like it fell apart sonically and the next guy said the same thing it sounded horrible. You don’t know who you’re talking to. Maybe I work in a studio. Do me a favor either read what I said properly or don’t respond or ignore it. You got 3 choices. Pick one. Btw I wasn’t talking to you.
No fuzz-type gain? Oh man, once I heard Big Muff, I knew I need it on my board. There's no other pedal to make Strat sing, fuzz was essential part of Jimi's and Gilmour's tone (high or mild gain settings respectively).
Aw man I haven't used a fuzz in years, but your comment alone makes me want to buy one! Haha.
@@RossCampbellGuitarist you definitely should! That Nobels+Steel String tone sounded really similar to lower gain setting on Big Muff.
I have a few OD pedals, but I love my TS-808 and Spark Booster.
Nice!
I like my women like I like my overdrive pedals, "fat tight and a bit squishy and spongy all at once."
Johnny Guitar you are not alone 😅
People: ads in the 50s were so cheesy and obvious...
Ross Campbell: hold my beer
Oh and did I say disgusting?
I have zero drive pedals out of my 18, thats the amps job
"Here's my clean t-" oh wait.
Why is the one I want always the most expensive?
This is me but with delay pedals
No Jan Ray? :( it’s what I use and stack it with my Galactic Eclipse for more heavy neck and humbucker leads
Never tried one myself!
Yeah. Good for you. I gave up, I invested in a top notch anp, a Tone King. Dual power soaks.
I just find pedals are not transparent.
Each to their own.
And tubes are JJ
It's not about the pedals on your board, it's about the amp you are playing through and what you are doing with your fingers. Pedals are okay ..but they don't match the true tone of what comes out of a real good tube amp . Your ears may like your pedals however pedals are more about sound not tone. You may like what you hear ( your sound) but people's ears get tired of pedals. they want the true real deal.Sound is dead and tone is alive.
I bet that one dislike on the first hours of this video is from someone that when asked for some overdrive tone pulls out a Metal Zone pedal.
Haha. That reminds me, I used to have the Boss Metal Core pedal back in the day!
Buy equalizer haha
