The part of the NFL statement that caught my ear is the part of more head down tackles and a false sense of safety. This was the time that the league was really cracking down on the head injuries and since it was mostly defensive players using them it could lead to more of the issues.
Players: Hey! Check out my new cool, safe face mask!!! NFL: why didn’t we come up with this idea and charge the teams extra for letting them wear them. We must ban them. “The new face masks are not safe. You can’t wear them!!!!!”
Totally forgot about the beast that was Ladamien Tomlinson.. Lynch came along and ppl forgot. Predator masks belong in football and safe in many ways especially now ( covid) if they wanna play safer
Correct, also Tucker had a neck issue that's why he added all those bars to his facemask, most of the initial modifications where made for medical porpuses, than idiots turn it into a fashion statement, and fans being fans of idiots are crying because the evil NFL doesn't want them be original, yeah because the most original team wins the chip at the end of the season.
Before every game the league has a former player Go around during warmups And check the players uniforms to make sure that They are not wearing an article that is banned or unauthorized.
Honestly this video was frustrating to watch. 10 minutes of rambling about players who wore the masks, then finally getting to the point in the last minute and a half.
YOU ARE SO FREAKING RIGHT!!!! I thank you for saying that! (I skipped forward.) but that was so frustrating it completely changed my mood. and the ending is still isn't that big of a deal.
@@bm2rambusify it was giving a story behind the masks, i watched the whole thing without problem. we all know why they really banned the facemasks, come on now
Being from St. Louis, and twice jilted by the NFL, I despise that duplicitous CTE money machine. That said, the NFL presented rather valid safety concerns based on studies from experts on the safety concerns. They thus met their burden, paid for or not. What I didn’t hear in the video or arguments from the NFLPA or the players were any counter studies. With the League under such scrutiny for CTE, they HAD to study these new helmet devices … If there’s contrary evidence on safety other than “No Fun League” arguments I’d love to hear it because I HATE defending those awful people.
I personally wasn’t a big fan of the custom designs most of the players chose, but I also think that the players should be able to choose that for themselves
No, that's backwards. You don't design something to allow someone to break a rule, and not penalize the rule breaker. You make the rule breaker stop breaking the rule. Especially a safety issue.
@@DDS029 I think they were saying face masks with smaller gaps would prevent defences from grabbing face masks so this would better protect players and reduce face mask penalties.
Maybe I'm missing something, but here's my thing: Ostensibly, the harsh penalties for facemasking an opponent during a tackle are for the players' safety, because the facemask grab will torque their neck and cause injuries. If you make a facemask with gaps smaller than fingers, then it makes it much much harder to facemask someone. Instead of making a rule to penalize it even if it's accidental, why not just make it almost impossible to do?
Here's a little extra bit of history behind the helmet cage mask. In 1989, Rickey Jackson had surgery to get his jaw wired shut after an auto accident, so he needed extra protection against his hurt jaw being targeted. He missed 2 games during the season but still played and recorded 7.5 sacks.
I always used to make my running backs wear those bc it seems like the right face mask for a running back to truck a corner back. I mean it's something that adds a touch of creativity to helmets along with those tinted visors.
While I agree to extent but that’s really all about the paint job, the nfl’s is all about the face mask design, visor, and chinstrap, and they are way better looking than nfl goalie masks, the egop/egop-2 style face mask with a visor is the best design ever
@@PatrickThomasBrady Goalie mask are not as cool now as they were in the 80s and 90s. They have more of a cage to them now due to improvements in the metal. Back in the day it was basically just eye holes and some openings to breath. Friday The 13th style. Now it is much easier to see and hurts much less to get hit with a 100mph puck, but you can see much more of the guy under it. Making it less creepy and cool. Still a lot of creativity is shown in the paint on the sides. It's not like a football player can paint their helmet how they want. Goalies have always been a specialty position with a lot of creativity allowed
@@Buffalosabskis that’s why I always liked goalie masks because it let players show some personality and everyone’s was diffferent, but I just love how sleek football masks/helmets can look, I wish the nfl weren’t so strict with stuff like this, as long as it’s not a safety risk I don’t get their issue, color and design should be up to the player with a limit to a teams colors for you mask and obviously you can’t change the helmet itself
Deion is famous for using the one that you showed for Smith. He used to use two helmets (when you could) during games, the one you showed was his offense helmet. Emmit smith may have come up with the idea, but the “Deion face mask” is that one. It’s also known as the robot facemask.
I am glad that there are people are thinking about 🏈 facemask. I wanted to share my channel which illustrates my customized facemask which allows football players to see and prevents tugs.
Then have all of the players sign an agreement that if they get hurt using, or by another player using a modded facemask they give up all rights to compensation, and forfeit the remainder of their contract for the period of the injury. The NFL stands to loose a lot of money over poorly made/ dangerous equipment.
My college teammate played there in70-80 with Lynn Dickey . Poor guy shoulder so jacked , no warm up just horse ointment right before kick off . Screaming painful , but allowed to play . Now go plenty of talent to pick from
Custom masks…..I don’t see why it matters much I think it gives players some personality without wearing something like the supreme sleeve we saw early in the video. The reason why they can’t let that slide is probably because they televise the events and therefore such an article of clothing is essentially a sponsorship and I guess there could be some legal issues with that. Things like taping up masks and changing face masks however is kinda cool and I think in such a pool of talent some people want a little more individuality.
The extra weight issue is real. In auto racing they are constantly searching for materials that are lighter yet provide the same, or better protection for helmets. Once the head starts moving, the lighter the helmet, the less momentum. The less momentum, the less it force on the neck at the full extention.
A face mask could be designed with very strong lightweight materials. It would reduce accidental and deliberate face mask grabbing and could increase the overall structural integrity of the helmet.
If testing and safety were the NFL's concern they could have limited the custom face masks to one per team per season. That limits the amount of safety testing needed while also giving teams some individuality.
that's a good idea. make it optional but one design per team. It would reflect the team's character, creativity, playing style. yeah, that's a great idea. I like it.
Thinking on it a bit - the NFL is just about turning this into a flag football league in the name of safety but won't allow these changes which make both the fans and the players happy... All the while throwing out (or perhaps up) the bizarre alternative uniforms onto the field pleasing no one but Riddel...
the facemasks protect the players from injuries, i don't know why they had a probably with certain facebars that had less entry for fingers and full blown hand entry
LT just so happens to be my favorite football player of all time. He definitely was a pioneer when it came to facemasks and visors!!! Whenever I would play madden and I would create a player or edit an existing one I always gave them a LT facemask... they were the coolest!!!
my first thought when I started noticing the face protections was "wow, the league is really looking out for the guys who take a lot of face/head contact by designing these for them. Plus, they look kinda cool". I should've known better. Otherwise, I barely noticed.
I’m not the biggest fan of custom face mask but if it gives you protection from players getting there fingers stuck in your helmet then I think it should be almost mandatory to have more bars on the face mask. Give these guys as much protection that you can possibly give them with out ruining the game.
NFL: hey guys we have some research that shows if everyone used these it would lead to more injuries and more dangerous tackl- TPS: So you’re saying you hate individuality, huh.
Increasing the player's security while wearing the helmet is likely to lead to them taking more risks and having more head and neck injuries. Frankly, they should only allow clear visors too, tinted and mirrored visors give additional advantages to quarterbacks and receivers because DBs would no longer be able to read their eyes.
Good times, I got to wear one of these cool grills when I was in my last year of high school! Loved the look of it! It felt a bit heavier than a regular mask and it really helped absorb impact. I know because I switched to a light mask one day for practice while I was trying to decide on which mask and got rocked lol! The heavier grill felt a lot better
all they had to do was sit down and create regulations that limit the face masks. like how large they are allowed to be, how much they are allowed to weigh, guidelines for designs they are allowed to have. it’s not that complicated.
I'm all for some of those original versions of those masks, they look awesome. But those ones shown here are to much, way to much. Hell I don't know why anyone would want to wear one that drastic as it has to block a large portion of your vision. To me it's pretty clear there are 2 main reasons for not allowing them. First and foremost I imagine safety is the biggest issue. Without regulated masks it's hard to make sure players are safe and the masks protect them. Secondly I imagine it's for uniformity. Wanting the players on the team to look like teammates. If you look back at old NFL footage you'll see a wide assortment of ridiculous masks that often looked nothing alike and weren't even made from the same material and sorry to say it wasn't a good like. It reminded me of those movies where a young or unknown team is thrown together with little money and they wear any helmet they can find. But yes the first versions of those mentioned are bad ass.
The extremely tight facemasks seemed like the perfect remedy to actual facemask penalties...because you can't get fingers in between the bars. Lots fewer infractions, player's safety is better....so yep, $$$ is the motivation, not safety.
That’s what I’m thinking too, these executives must be making money from penalty’s.

The amount you are paid is about the supply of how many people can do the job you are doing and the savings of the company you are working for which for NFL franchises is obviously massive. There are so few professional athletes therefore they will get paid more than a trucker who does a more important job yet there are millions of truckers. Honestly, you sound like someone who would talk about how great capitalism is but not understand what it is, understand the work market in the country you live in before you speak again about someone being 'overpaid'.
Going on strike would probably hurt the NFL and the players in the long term.
Baseball used to be so much bigger than it is now until their strike and it's been declining since.

It sounds like the people at Riddell have a deal going on with the NFL of some sort… they didn’t have an issue with it till helmet production was huge
I am glad that there are people are thinking about 🏈 facemask. I wanted to share my channel which shows my customized facemask which uses a transparent shield to prevent tugs.
The part of the NFL statement that caught my ear is the part of more head down tackles and a false sense of safety. This was the time that the league was really cracking down on the head injuries and since it was mostly defensive players using them it could lead to more of the issues.

The helmet itself is a “false sense of security”.

Some of these masks have to prevent "hands to face" and "facemask" penalties. I'm all of speeding the game up and not replaying downs.
And a lot of broken fingers!!
Matthew Weeks that’s exactly what I thought
No, that's backwards. You don't design something to allow someone to break a rule, and not penalize the rule breaker. You make the rule breaker stop breaking the rule. Especially a safety issue.
@@gabelacroix3411 Yeah same people sometimes get their finger stuck in regular facemasks some of those designs would be finger traps.
Robot sent from the future specifically to sack you 😂😂😂 That’s hilarious
Here's a little extra bit of history behind the helmet cage mask. In 1989, Rickey Jackson had surgery to get his jaw wired shut after an auto accident, so he needed extra protection against his hurt jaw being targeted. He missed 2 games during the season but still played and recorded 7.5 sacks.
I always used to make my running backs wear those bc it seems like the right face mask for a running back to truck a corner back. I mean it's something that adds a touch of creativity to helmets along with those tinted visors.
The best face masks aren't in the NFL. They're in the NHL. Goalies, since Jacques Plante have had the best paint.
Gary Bromley took it to the next level. Hard to believe until 1974 some guys did not wear a mask or helmet in net
Bruh nobody cares about hockey. This is a football video, thanks
LT did start the custom face mask trend. Chargers are my favorite team and looked forward to seeing the new crazy design every week
LTs tinted shield was so iconic. Dude looked mean when he lined up. Absolute favorite Charger.
Deion is famous for using the one that you showed for Smith. He used to use two helmets (when you could) during games, the one you showed was his offense helmet. Emmit smith may have come up with the idea, but the “Deion face mask” is that one. It’s also known as the robot facemask.

Then have all of the players sign an agreement that if they get hurt using, or by another player using a modded facemask they give up all rights to compensation, and forfeit the remainder of their contract for the period of the injury. The NFL stands to loose a lot of money over poorly made/ dangerous equipment.

It is kind of surprising that this was not more popular with offensive players likely to have their head turned if someone grabbed their facemask
The extra weight issue is real. In auto racing they are constantly searching for materials that are lighter yet provide the same, or better protection for helmets. Once the head starts moving, the lighter the helmet, the less momentum. The less momentum, the less it force on the neck at the full extention.
You must work for the NFL.
Riddel makes the helmet not nike.
Many of the facemask designs have to reduce the "Hands to the face" and "Facemask" penalties. There's little way you can get your fingers in them.

John 3:16 “for God so loved the world he sacrificed his one and only son” put your faith in God!!
Another example of people making rules, when they haven't or have only played at an intermediate level.....
I’m not the biggest fan of custom face mask but if it gives you protection from players getting there fingers stuck in your helmet then I think it should be almost mandatory to have more bars on the face mask. Give these guys as much protection that you can possibly give them with out ruining the game.

I love these masks and I think each player should be able to have there own personalized masks.
If we do not come up with it first we wont allow it, pretty much how major industries do it.
