“Everyone knows that bad things happen when you try to pass 72.”
That was the hardest line I’ve ever heard from one of your videos. You’re a genius
Can you explain why?
@@morezombies9685don’t want to get 73 points cuz you don’t want to pass 72 and tie the record. But you also don’t want to try and pass 72 cuz bad things happen (all teams that tried to beat the 72 dolphins record ended up failing).

This line really keeps coming back into my head every now and then
I'm a lifelong Dolphins fan because of my grandfather. He gave me a book that he bought at the Orange Bowl gift shop in 1971, simply entitled "The Miami Dolphins" by Morris T. McLemore. This book written before 1972 somehow had a prophetic understanding of something extremely special coming to the NFL and for the Dolphins. The book ends with the Dolphins losing the 1971 Super Bowl. The final line is: "These gentle giants of the pits, they hear bells other men never know."
Wow,
I think that's all I can bring myself to say about that.

no way your uncle was kuechenberg! that:s amazing
That’s so cool
Kuechenberg was a good lineman; he saw four of Miami’s five Super Bowl teams to date I believe (wasn’t he there for Dan Marino’s first season but not his second).
Along with Jim Langer and Larry Little who made the Hall of Fame, he was a key blocker that helped their backfield thrive, and also would have blocked for the rushers of the 1982 team that had the Killer B’s, and made the Super Bowl with David Woodley at quarterback.

@@seemyjohn spygate. prior to the coaches' speaker in the qbs/mikes' ear, teams used to record opposing coaches hand signals to know what they're doing beforehand. alot of teams did this and the NFL sent out a memo saying no more filming opposing sidelines but the patriots kept doing it. League said enough and ended up punishing the Pats hard by taking a first and fining Bill Belicheck $500k. The whole situation was blown out of proportion and actually many coaches in the NFL defended the Patriots saying they did the same thing and filming opposing sidelines was a known thing in the football world.

I grew up in Indianapolis, watching football from birth. By the end of the '71 season I had just turned 10 and had become pretty familiar with all the teams, but I hadn't chosen a favorite to be "mine". Geographically, the Bengals or the Bears made sense, but I decided to ignore proximity. I chose the Dolphins during that off-season, mostly for a reason that seems silly in hindsight: I liked their uniform colors. But my selection and timing was just right. For years after that, my bedroom wall was adorned with a large poster of Larry Csonka busting through a bunch of Redskin defenders. And although I have adopted various teams over the decades as I've moved around, I still have a special place in my heart for the "One-Two Punch" of Griese-Csonka, receiver Paul Warfield, and all the rest. Every year, if any team starts to string together a number of wins, I start to get protective and find myself rooting against them until they fall.
Never underestimate Emp’s ability to utterly enthrall you for an hour on a subject you otherwise would literally give zero shits about

I'm from Miami, and I remember my middle school teacher being obsessed with the Dolphins, older fellow, in his 60's now, retired 5 years back. He'd sit us down with a far off look of awe in his eyes and talk to us about how he sneaked into the Orange Bowl to watch the '72 Dolphins play, that little Miami Dolphins chant being sung while he was bored all the time. I was an egghead and didn't care much about sports, in a way it was even a little annoying, but for the first time in my life, I finally now understand why. For once I can fully comprehend the gravity of what he witnessed, and why to this day his faith in his team remains unwavering. He's now got another fan too, thanks for everything, Emp.
I'm 67; I was raised on football, and until 2008, my favorite game, was the Jets > Colts in SBIII. But then, with all the 'perfect' talk about the Pats, they even started publishing a book about their perfect season, the Giants got their revenge for that regular season loss, and that became my favorite superbowl game, ever. I don't think I'll live long enough to see another perfect season; those Dolphins were great, but also had just enough luck to get them that famous moniker: PERFECT.

YOU ARE THE GREATEST UA-camR EmpLemon. You’re probably the only one who can give me literal chills with your editing, music choices, and storytelling. You’ve mastered the art of building tension and suspense and the all too elusive release. Not only that, but I have been trying to get more into sports in general over the past few years, and your videos on football, baseball and nascar have shown me why it is that people care so much about all this. Like modern day myths, or as close to superheroes you can get. These teams and players have legends built around them. And the passion people have for their cities and their teams, is fully displayed in the content you create. I finally understand, and I am partially in debt to you for that. Good game, cheers!
It's worth mentioning that the 2007 season was the season of the Spygate scandal when the Patriots were recording the other coaches' signals outside of the appropriate contexts for doing so, and it was deemed such a violation by the league that Belichick was given the max fine allowed ($500K) and the Patriots were stripped of their 1st round pick in the 2008 draft. That was a big part of why many outside of New England didn't want to see the Patriots go all the way at the time. It wasn't just about preserving the novelty of the 72' Dolphins, it was about preserving the purity of the perfect season.
Which is a lie. Every team was doing the exact same thing back then. Patriots were just the first to get punished for it
The “outside of the appropriate context” is a MASSIVE detail people gloss over when talking ab spygate tho. Pats never filmed anything they weren’t allowed to and gained no real competitive advantage

This was a nice trip down memory lane combined with a really good story about the league in general. I grew up in south Florida in the 80's and 90's and went to so many of the Dolphins games.. My dad produced the television broadcasts for the home games in the early to mid 80's so we were always around the stadium and I still have a few pictures of me with Don Shula and my dad down on the field. I will die on the hill that if the city of Miami kept the Orange Bowl then the Dolphins would have more Super Bowls and the Hurricanes would have more National Championships.
Pistons: we may never win again
😂
They don’t even have the worst record in the NBA now
@@fortynights1513 kinda like how the Dolphins haven't won a playoff game in 24 years
A lifelong Dolphins fan, my childhood started with the perfect season in my 7th year. You have so perfectly encapsulated my football watching life as I certainly did not realize how special my first year of watching and paying attention to football was when it happened. I thought the Lombardi was my teams birthright as they won it twice when I was very young and now sadly they have never gotten it again. Since those two seasons, the happiest I have been while watching football was the 85 Dolphins takedown of the Bears and the 07 Giants takedown of the evil empire! The futility of the Dolphins throughout the first 20 years of this century nearly destroyed my love for this game. Now, 51 years later I am excited watching my own team again and TRULY appreciated the 70 points put up against the Broncos. I await this season's ending with excitement and true hope for this year and the future as McDaniel looks to be the true heir of Don Shula's legacy. Just bringing winning back to Miami is warming my frozen football heart. God Bless Emp for making this wonderful video!
Giants fan here. I was real young, too young to remember 42. But it still is one of the greatest events in sports history.
31:20 I love the huge grins on the two Jets fans in the sea of defeated Colts fans 😂
Well done video! I'm not much of a sports guy, but I did end up appreciating sports a lot more because of this video. It also didn't hurt that I had bingewatched all your videos prior. You just seem to have a way about you to make something I never thought to be interested in be really captivating!
Cheers my friend!
The untapped potential of sports story telling in youtube is scary, good job empy making me feel some emotions for a sport and a team I never liked or even know existed !
I knew every single beat of this story from beginning to end, because I've been a football fan all my life. How could I not know. And yet, I still watched it, and enjoyed the privilege of reliving so many football memories all at once. Thanks, Emp.
Yeah, as soon as he said perfect season, I knew helmet catch would come up, and still when it did I was glued to the screen
As a lifelong dolphins fan, this is all I have. Maybe one day they can win a Super Bowl in my lifetime
I love the Dorktown Falcons reference with the music at 28:44. Great touch, phenomenal video, thanks for everything you make Emp.
Another incredible well made video from you Emp. I really loved the soundtrack especially the vaporwave tracks.
God hearing Miami Dolphins #1 got me so nostalgic. I ain't a huge sports person, was only born in 2k, but hearing that song brings back fuzzy memories of going to The Big Cheese with my family and soaking in the atmosphere.
Yo i love the big cheese i remember going there and watching the um games

UrinatingTree representing the Steelers in an Emplemon video is blessed
Captivating, amazing, astonishing. Emplemon is simply one of the best storytellers ever. I haven't seen a single game of American football, still I'm close to tears after the finale of this video. Brilliant!!!!❤
absolutely beautiful vid, thank u so much
As a Dolphins fan, and an EmpLemon fan, this video was just _perfection_

I don't even care about sports at all, but i make sure to see every one of Emp's videos. He makes sports interesting in a way i just don't get from watching them on TV or hearing about them from fans.
@@bugjamsyou might enjoy Dorktown
You took an unbeatable record and showed it as a tragic arc for every future would be champion. Every dot connected-- so much more than nostalgia here.
This is such a great video. It’s better than every nfl channel documentary I’ve ever seen. You did a bang up job on this one!
45:54 Emplemon has become such master at integrating music within his videos, it really adds an entirely new layer to his already great scripts and editing skills
Almost shed a tear at 10:30

When Vampire Killer started playing i got more excited than i have any business being
This is a great companion to the Art of the Choke video. I would love a NEVER EVER episode on Don Bradman and his status as possibly the greatest sportsperson of all time, especially because he's probably not very well known to Americans. Emp Lemon has such a great way of talking about sports in an entertaining way.
oh my god a bradman video would be incredible
An extremely different channel but Numberphile had a solid video on Don Bradman
As an Australian this is an absolute must for me
I love your sports videos so much emp. Rewatch all the time. Keep on trucking brotha respect!!!
This is what makes storytelling so special. I could not have less interest in football, yet I was captivated the entire video. Emp is a master of his craft.
