@@random123311 Yep but different helmets are better at different collisions. The speedflex is really good for head-on collisions, so its preferred by linemen, whereas the F7 is best for back and side, so receivers wear them.
I still can’t believe players still use chinstraps like Aaron Rogers. You’d think 1 helmet to the chin would hurt enough to switch to a real chinstrap.
My helmet in high school was an older model that weighed a lot & because of that I felt like my hits were controlled a lil more and not as bad… When I got to college they gave us the option of older models or new revolution helmets fit specifically to me and my position. As a Free Safety I chose the revolution helmet but it felt way more dangerous. Here’s why ⬇️ 1) Due to it being ALOT lighter, I moved quicker, making my hits harder an more explosive.. (not bad) 2) With how much padding it had, I felt absolutely nothing helmet to helmet wise & that made me reckless to the point of just cracking everyone including myself a lot more violently because I knew I wouldn’t feel anything so the little fear I barely had already was completely fucking gone… When you take someone who loves to hit and give them an added safety cushion, they lose fear to the point of endangering themselves and not realize. Thankfully I never badly injured myself or another player with head blows 🙏
When I played in the Adult AZFL League in Arizona I stated out with the Schutt Air Advantage. Then to the REVO. The Revo lasted for a week before I was back to to Air Advantage. In that league you had to pay to play and supply your own pads and helmets. By the time I stopped in 2016 I had used the previous 2 helmets along with the Revo Speed, Schutt DNA, The Schutt Ion 4D, Schutt Vengance and the Riddell speed flex. the Schutt Dna, Schutt Ion 4D and Schutt Vengance I bought when they 1st hit the market I miss my Riddell Speed Flex, Schutt Vengance, Schutt ion 4D and Schutt Air advantage the most. the original ion 4D I miss the most with it's silver padding. I felt unstoppable in that helmet as both a Linebacker and Free Safety.
Already knew all of this, but it was a great breakdown of the subject. Looks like the NFL wants to mitigate lawsuits from concussions by forcing players into wearing newer models. Hopefully lawsuits won’t bleed over to Riddell, Schutt, Vicis etc.
I played ball in the 80s. The old helmets had a way of not protecting you on impact. Everyone always thinks its the impact of the slamming together. Ive been hit plenty where the impact was inside the helmet. like an explosion went off. Thats where the concusions and brain damage would occur. Ive hit were i got a neck stinger, or sore shoulder, or even upper back. But the collision and impact explosion inside the helmet, rings your bell, its this that makes these new helmets so important. You hit the wrong way youll break your neck, no helmet can save you, its the explosion inside the helmet, that you try to prevent that these new helmets are needed, use them.
I’ve worn a lot of helmets in my life and my favorite has been the Soeed flex. As a kid I used the old Brady helmet because TB12 the goat. I’ve worn the revo helmet for middle school that stafford and Payton had for most of their careers. Than the Speed helmet in high school. The NFL is putting on a ridiculous show with CTE. The fact is that NO helmet can protect a player from concussion. The brain sits inside a jelly inside the skull. Concussions occur when the brain shifts inside that jelly and smashes into the inside of the skull causing bruising. Helmets cannot ever stop that from the outside of the skull.
I am a Panthers fan and don't at all care for the Bucs, but I must admit, the old classic "creamsicle" unis are sexy as hell. I wish they'd bring them back at least just so I'd have a better uni to look at when they play the Panthers twice per year lol. I also really really dig the old school Broncos look too with the lighter shade of blue and the D/horse logo on the helmets. So much cooler than what they have now. These days, those style unis like the Broncos and Buccs have now just looks dated in a bad way. Like, they look like they're just pretty much stuck in that early 2000s "cool/edgy/tough" kind of aesthetic with their font designs and color schemes (as are the Panthers unis, I'll readily admit). When the Rams moved to LA and went back to their older color scheme, it improved their look so so much. The same thing happened with New England (just for the record, the Pats' throwback unis and helmets are probably some of my favorites ever tbh) with their simpler, more clean design they now sport. Many other teams could definitely take a note out of their playbook, so to speak, and bring back some other classic, clean, simple design choices that are also modern. It would really freshen up some old organizations for sure and bring some new life into the league.
