Haze: PS3 Gaming at its Yellow-est

Haze is a game that includes an assault rifle, pistol, and submachine gun. You fight red militia guy and yellow robot guy. There is a part in a helicopter and a part with a turret. Many characters talk for several minutes in unskippable cutscenes. The game also features driving sections and poorly implemented motion controls. If that was boring to read, imagine how fun the game is to play!

The moral is to never call your game a “Halo killer”
unless you are Halo
Sony was the one doing this
The killzone devs hated the term
never call your game a "[insert long-running franchise] killer"
I feel like labeling your product any kind of '______ Killer' is just asking for hubris to be your downfall
@@username1660 honestly
John Haze from Haze Rising: Vengeancest not to be confused with Jonathan Halo, protagonist of Halo the Ring
Oh I was confused by halo John 711 from the hit tv show “90% of the time my helmet is off”
I heard that John Halo kills aleins and doesn't afraid of anything, What's John Haze's schtick?
John Dark Sector feels like a better character than John Haze to me. I feel bad when he got beaten by John Dark Souls in the John Duel and has to be reborn as John Warframe
Max0r is that you?
@@jivasche7345 idk something about John wick
The honey part about selling data was genius.
Yeah good looking out for his viewers' data privacy
I love Oboe's jabs at sponsors
I LOVED that call out. Lol. These companies are making money by moving that user data. 🤣
I love a good fake ad. It's the one good thing that ever came out of advertising and marketers: Making fun of them.
My fave thing is SponsorBlock flagging it as an Ad. Genuinely hilarious
I think more people had this as their psn profile picture than people who actually played the game
Fun fact: A developer for this game worked at Sears and repaired my refrigerator’s ice maker!
is your ice yellow now
haze, famous for his quote "every haze has its haze"
"it's always haziest before the haze"
I will be back! With more Haze.
*IT'S HAZIN' TIME*
I remember being a teenager and seeing this game's cover art and thought it looked cool. I couldn't get the game because it was rated M. Thanks Mom and Dad for not letting me get rated M games at the time, you saved me from a crappy game.
Dope
At least you could get Battlefield Bad Company, which was awesome.
@@mobiusraptor7 I’m trying to remember what games I used to play back then besides Little Big Planet and inFAMOUS.
By the time we could play rated M games I had a 360 and Halo. I didn’t play much FPS games on that generation besides Halo.
I played a crap ton of Medal of Honor Rising Sun on the PS2.
@@TheSpongyMallard LBP was life. Infamous 1 and 2 were awesome games too. KILLZONE 2 was super fun
Only fun thing on this was finding glitches that were crazy op
I genuinely want to purchase the rights to a defunct game if it isn't crazy expensive. It'd be kind of cool.
Chances are the rights are gonna be expensive because companies buy these dead games for the tech. Even the worst games have salvageable tech.
I'd purchase the rights to Haze if I had the money. Might be fun to mess around with the property. I'd make it more like Metro 2033 though.
@@tindekappa9047 What? salvageable tech? WHAT?????????? i dont understand
@@GAMER123GAMING Code. Like for example if it's got multiplayer, the code for the matchmaking can be used in any multiplayer game, or the engine itself can be recycled, or literally anything.
@@tindekappa9047 Who the fuck wants to repurpose the source code of Haze lmao? Nobody was that desperate.
"gaming for me is a religion and haze is the shit!" -korn, 2007 probably
The fact that Korn did a song for this game like almost 10 years after the height of their popularity is hilarious . Like the terrible Aerosmith game for SNES “generation x” 20 years after the height of their popularity
The AI of Haze was so good that the good guys even tried to stop you from playing the game and suffer more
Dude I remember this fucking game. I played it as a wee lad and it led me to the harsh reality: just because they sell it in the gamestore doesn't mean it's worth buying. I just hadn't thought that bad games were a thing. Oh to be young.
The premisse of the combat drug removing bodies etc from their vision to make war "clean" is interesting but its not really much used. The play dead mechanic is at least unique.
Play Dead feature was in a game called Delta Force Black Hawk Down. Nothing original
@@foxtrotsierraproductions8626 So, it was in that one game that no one ever played except for you and 5 other people. It's not original but I can't say it's overused.
I think the game had some neat concepts. For example, they have names for every npc, even the garbage fodder ones. I can see how a better developer could've used this feature to humanize the npcs more and hammer in the "war bad" massage in a more subtle way. But alas, this game wasn't handled by subtle, or good developers.
@@schibleh531
Free radical is not a good developer? My guy, that is dead wrong. The publisher tho...
@@schibleh531 oof you are showing your age. Delta Force was a very popular series.
Haze isn’t a First Person Shooter, it’s a First Piss Shooter.
Even then Postal 2 did it better.
First Pissing Shooter!
I like how you're just bargain bin diving for the most premium of early 7th gen first person action
Also, the fuckin SIXAXIS screaming thing was amazing.
WAH! AUGHAUGHAUGHHH
"The only thing that could kill Halo was Halo itself"
Truer words have never been spoken.
That man on fires screams will haunt me all day.
Been waiting for this one. Lotta fellas still running the haze playstation avatar two console generations later
Wait... That's an option?
It was my avatar on ps4 for a long time and i didnt know this game even existed
My account still might have it. Shame I lost my password. The very first time in my life that not using a real email bit me in the ass.
I feel like the vast majority of the avatars available for PSN profiles are all 2005-2009 PS exclusive characters. Motorstorm, Resistance, Warhawk, etc.
Remember seeing this in my game informer magazine and wanting it
"Gaming for me is a religion and Haze is the shit!"
-Jonathan Davis
korn man really said this too, it's crazy
ua-cam.com/video/SHjvUjlF1kE/v-deo.html
I love the way this man enjoys in game physics so much, so pure.
It was more of a "Free Radical" killer. Free Radical got the shaft a lot, and that upsets me greatly.
There are some pretty in-depth documentaries on all the ways the devs got screwed over by their publisher on this game specifically, too. Basically nothing turned out how they wanted it to.
Yeah, Free Radical had such a solid track record before this and TimeSplitters was (still is) one of my favorite shooter franchises. I hope the new one under the revived studio turns out well. They deserve a win.
I remember buying this at launch because, well, PS3 had no games. I'm so glad you included the ending. I nearly gave myself a stroke laughing at the "don't tell my mom" line when I first saw it. Bought, completed and refunded all in the same day. Good times. Shameful when you think this was made by Free Radical.
Originally the game was multiplatform but Ubisoft made a deal with Sony so it became an exclusive. The development of this game was screwed. Free Radical could do nothing about it. RIP
You’re saying that they could have done another Time Splitters and they did Haze?
@@sterkriger2572 from what I read the idea of the game was from Free Radical. They had made three time splitters games so they wanted to do something else. Publishing was being handled by Ubisoft and later during development Sony talked to Ubisoft to make it an exclusive
Well by the time Haze came out PS3 had some games at least. MGS4 came like a month after this and while that certainly had it's issues it was way, way better than this.
A war being fought by soldiers drives out of their minds, closer to child soldiers in mentality but fitting like the best route troops a first world nation can field, there's something there of only it was handled better.
I've never played Haze, but after all of these years, I still remember my promise to Merino
I would argue that Deus Ex Human Revolution is PS3 gaming at its yellow-est.
More like Golden-est TBH
at least that does something aesthetically nice with yellow. haze is just borderline a grey shooter, but slightly yellow
Deus Ex HR had some really unique visuals. It's one of the only games that had a filter on it that actually worked for the aesthetic.
That Honey "advert"... woof, that is a thing Honey does.
Sad thing. A lot of the PS3 2nd party studios went under after making exclusives for Sony. Free Radical made this and went under, Game Republic made Genjo and Folklore and went under. Factor 5 the legendary studio that made Rogue Squadron made Lair for the PS3 and went under. PS3 was cursed.
Thankfully many of the Sony first party studios still made some great exclusives on PS3.
In the PS3 era I found there to be only two ways to shake the six axis controller. 1. Hold it between the index finger and the thumb, rotating back and forth. 2. Tilting your wrists forward. It was truly rubbish controls.
Haze's burning voice clip is PERFECT
Absolutely lost my shit at the continuous screaming and “this 2D honey comb crap ain’t cutting it!” 😂😂
Oboe should play another nostalgic trip of a game call "Dead To Rights: Retribution" hopefully it's as good as I remember (p.s. you get to play as a dog)
ill be honest, i read that as ride to hell: retribution at first, whoops
I remember in like middle school there was a kid in my class that talked constantly about this game and how "cool" it was.
I completely forgot about it until a couple years back when I found a video on it deeming it one of the worst games for the PS3.
had a similar experience, once at a game store a older kid pointed the game out to me and said don’t buy that, it’s trash… he walked away and my rebel self thought nahhh imma buy it fuck it… learnt my lesson then, some strangers are actually good people lmao.. little 7 year old me thought he was lying lol
This game is so 7th gen shooter, I thought you already did a video on it
I was pretty sure he did.... or didnt he?
pretty sure we're all getting Mandela'd by Bionicle Boi 'cause I could've sworn he already did a Haze video up until an hour ago.
This game holds a special place in my heart. It was my first FPS game on the PS3 and I remember playing multiplayer all night. It was fun tbh.
I remember when Korn made a song for this game.
I played this on the PS3 back in the day. I love the Mantel Corporation's soldiers and the plot sounded great, but the execution was horrible. The mechanics of the Nectar and Playing Dead carried into multiplayer and i wasnt able to try it out but im sure the Mantel Soldiers had a huge advantage (when i tried online once, there was ONE other person lol)
I gotta give credit when it’s due. I feel like this game had a good idea like a bunch of juiced up, gung-ho ass soldiers go to war against a guerrilla faction and one soldier (you) realises that maybe were the bad guys and goes to destroy the entire military industrial complex and you lead the fight. just the execution was bad and I’m drunk so have patience w me. Thank you
It's basically the failed version of Spec Ops: The Line, similar idea but Haze lacked the writing and design to make it work. Like Spec Ops: The Line worked because they managed to incorporate both gameplay and the general design of the game into the plot, with it being set in the destroyed ruins of a decadent metropolis where the catastrophe have made the underlying corruption come up to the surface.
Maybe the game would have been better if they had named the protagonist Smedley Butler.
@@hedgehog3180 I always thought it was a shitty version of Crysis
They were so confident in Haze, that they actually released a demo of the game. Yeah, I uninstalled that pretty quick lol
They put out a demo, becuase that was the form of advertising back then. They didn't put it out, because they thought they had made a masterpiece.
I was watching this with my blue light filter on and I was like, "Damn, that is yellow."
I remember literally everyone having the cover art as their profile pic on the ps3
Man, it's so weird looking back on the PS3/XB360 days, when linear single player shooters were being released left and right. They really didn't age well, I don't even know why we loved these so much.
Been looking forward to an Oboe upload just in time
I remember playing the demo as a kid and wanting to buy the game but being too broke. Glad i was broke.
Guys am I freaking out or is this his second time covering this game??? The scenes seem to be different too or am I just dumb lol. Still loved it!!!
Guys it’s like HALO…. But Yellow.

I had fun playing this game lots of times back on the ps3
to this day i had no idea what kind of game haze was but it somehow has one of the most memorable cover arts in my eyes. i remember seeing it in a store very often
I’ll never forget this game. My dad got it and I watched him play it. In like 30 minutes, he said “This game sucks.” and he turned it off... Then we just played Cod 4 XD
Good on him.
Yepp. We were incredibly disappointed
@@sealake7935god that’s the worst feeling, happened to me with eso where I got hyped about getting it, played it, and got sad when it sucked…but it’s a modern Bethesda elder scrolls so what did I expect?
The best part of this game was the in-lore website they put up. It was fun to read through.
Gotta love taking Gmanlives's "The only thing that could kill Halo was Halo itself" quote from literally the same game where he said it.
as always great vid
Honestly the water barrel section was pretty good
That ad segue was too smooth
That guy screaming about apes and food and being a meat eater clearly is prophesizing Alex Jones.
I actually loved this game as a kid had a lot of fun playing it

I was wondering why the video contained a total of zero "REMEMBER YOUR PROMISE TO MERINO", then I reached the end.
Oboe entertaining and topical
If they really wanted to make a game that would kill Halo they should've worked in making Halo 5
Halo 5 isn't even bad.
@@ghostlegit extremely mediocre compared to the other halos
Well it didn't really kill halo so
@@edgehoward4290 Campaign was bad but from what I've heard the MP was some of the best in the series.

That honey segment was excellent
Day 660 of trying to get Oboe to play through skyrim as sigurd.
My favorite part about halo is that the enemies are all generic army guys and not colorful aliens who are easy to distinguish, so I’m glad Haze understood that
I like this game a lot use to play this with my grandma and brother
I'm actually dead right now when writing this com... BOOM fooled you right there, I was alive all along!
Fun fact: Grant Kirkhope did some audio work for this game. There was supposed to be a Haze radio feature that was cut. Grant had the leftovers as a download on his site, but I haven't checked in a while if it's still there.
Is it?
Dude, that nectar stuff seems a lot like a water sports analogy... lol
Lmao your honey ad was pretty good

"oh boy, big backup on the ladder today." I'm still laughing from that one.
You remind me of LetsGameitOut and his long lost brother. Love it
I loved this game
"Remember your promise to Merino"
yes my favourite game i never played but begged my mum to buy for me as a kid
Only thing I remember about this game was the Ads being EVERYWHERE at launch. And then it came out and it all vanished.
I feel like mr Oboe played every game that I did
still to this day i have my psn picture the haze photo because i think it looks cool after 10 years lol
I'm restoring my foreskin and I watch these videos while I do my tugging. Good stuff
I love how on youtube vanced the honey part is marked as a real sponsored part lol
CoD 3 had some cool controller movement involment sections
That game is really great I finished the whole game it was amazing I still got it PS3
This was my whole childhood game I’d get off school and play everyday and weekend I ain’t have WiFi back or internet back then so I would just play all games offline this was dope though who’s selling a ps3 I want my childhood gaming experience back 🥺🥺
