Killzone 1 proves "killing Halo" is a suicide mission

- Killzone 1 is the NEW hit game for the Sony Playstation 2. Step into the boots of up to four different heroes on their quest to kill the Hellguys. The Hellguys want to occupy the Good Guy Mall so they can have convenient access to a Hot Topic store, and as such they must be stopped at all costs.

I actually miss the "Halo Killers". All these studios trying to make big, epic games with a significant draw or twist. Felt it was a bit more original than now, ironically.
Funnily enough Killzone's devs weren't trying to make a Halo Killer but it was never the less marketed AS a Halo Killer.
Halo Killers vs WoW Killers, which one was the most successful genre?
Whatever game that may be, we all can agree that Haze was a piece of shit.
Ah a time where we got things like Haze, Homefront, MAG. What a time to be alive.
Yep today it’s all follow the blueprint bs.. there is only one halo killer that was effective, 343’s halo games
Yes, killing Halo is a suicide mission. That's why only 343i committing suicide can kill Halo.
Indeed
LOL
Haha…. Cries in lifetime fan tears*
@@wowthatsbrutal It's ok Marine, Spartans never die. Only live service games can die.
Only 343i is capable of such bravery, indeed.
The only real "Halo Killer" was Halo itself.
Jesus that was meta
Real original
*"Fine, i do it myself"*
And he kind of did it but not at 100%
yeah halo guardians and infinite
@@mohammadwahidsami891 4 didn't help anything with that terrible story and cod clone gameplay
As someone who was a huge Sony fan back in the day, even I knew that marketing yourself as a 'Halo killer' was a terrible idea
As the man who personally killed halo, I can confirm that marketing yourself as a Halo Killer is a terrible idea.
Guerilla Games never actually marketed Killzone as being a "Halo killer", it was the major gaming publications of the time that did.
Halo turned out to be the ultimate Halo killer
@@Loudest_Cricket_ They may not have marketed it as such but it was fairly clear they were trying to compete, just like all the WoW killers that died stillborn
I think Susan told them to market themselves that way
I saw somewhere that most of these "Halo Killers" were never intended to be that by the designers and it was actually the publishers/producers trying to drum up advertising hype essentially obligating devs to a goal they never had.
The question now is who was the person who coined "Halo Killer" and why were they so adamant about killing Halo?
Sounds like a very publisher thing to do.
@@GenericProtagonist118 I believe it was a games journalist/s. And why ? People are always looking out for the next big thing and Halo held the top spot for console First Person shooters. Some journalist has to write an article, sees footage from a promising looking new game and "Halo Killer" was born. Then marketing saw it and jumped onboard.
@@GenericProtagonist118 because they can't take on Call of Duty and Medal of Honor is already dead
@@Fulcrox call of duty was still finding its feet at this time and medal of honor was far from dead in 04. Not to mention they didn't really get much comparision beyond being first person.
I loved the vibe of Killzone and Killzone 2. Good times
Both of them were essentially WWII IN SPACE, from the "invading on our ground" (pearl harbour, i guess) to the "normandy beach" in second and in third it's basically sturm of Berlin and personal bunker of The Evil Leader (which is smh in space.)
I remember dumping so much time fighting the bots when I was 10
@@jimbothegymbro7086 KZ 1 on ps2 after school against bots was so fun, funniest par is that i got KZ 1 in a bazaar form a random man.
@@harijsgrants1290I thought that's how MOST of us got it lmao
@Чё Бля and? 2 and 3 were amazing
To be fair only media outlets said Killzone was a "halo killer", the developers said "Bullshit it is, we wanted to make space world war 2". I always felt Killzone was more akin to Gears of War than Halo
Yes indeed
Oboe : dies to a single enemy he walked into and did not shoot.
Also Oboe : "you failed to make a good game".
To be fair I quit several times, when I was a wee lad, in that swamp section. It was not forgiving at all.
@@ChubbsterBrown Huh, i beat that game countless times as a kid, i never recalled the swamp or really any part being to hard, although i did always play rico, because he's op, best gun and highest hp.
@@gavinrobinson8925 I remember just being killed by people I could never see and lots of those high HP bald bastards. I somehow remember playing as hakha and Rico but I don't recall which I survived as. Probably Rico spamming his alt.
Gosh dang it Susan, every game that tried to kill Halo failed and died, then 343i showed us how it's done
I remember how the character you'd choose would affect the engagements, like what enemies you'd face, some of the paths you could take, some subtle differences in how the guns would be handled, the final level.
If you played as Hakha, the aiming reticule for the Helghast assault rifle would be much smaller than with the other characters, suggesting he was more skilled with it. He was the Helghast weapons specialist. Luger would allow for more stealthy approaches: head shots, knife kills and some hidden paths + the thermal vision. Rico would face more heavily armed/armoured enemies. The aiming reticule for the Helghast assault rifle was the biggest for him, suggesting he was less precise with that rifle. Templar was basically your standard soldier guy. A baseline experience perhaps. Which was still fun.
I vaguely remember some of the dialogue changing during the levels and some of the final cut scenes would change depending on what character you were playing as. Events and levels would still be largely the same, but all these little differences did add some replay value for me. Fun fact: many of the sounds were made with the studio's office supplies and it was made by a Dutch studio - nowadays part of Sony.
>Fun fact: many of the sounds were made with the studio's office supplies
well that explains the next-level watercooler sound effects.
Same studio that made Horizon: Zero Dawn
Hell yeah, that's why I played as Hakha; the smaller reticule for the Helghast rifle, the gun with the most common ammo.
@@acomingextinction Hehe, that wouldn't surprise me. I remember how they showed off moving parts of say a stapler to create weapon sounds.
When dumb dumb child me figured out those little changes as a kid I was blown away.
Being a broke little fella I had to get every last drop out of my games and that fact stretched Killzone out for a good long time.
Killzone 1 isn’t great, but it could’ve been worse, it could’ve been Haze or Fuse.
Haze was ironically hilarious to play in co-op though lmao, but we don't talk about Fuse...
@@bobbybrown475 Haze is funny bad.
2 and 3 killed halo for me personally. I'd rather play 2 than halo 3

I don’t think Killzone was ever a Halo Killer. But it is an amazing Subversive War story where you’re actually the bad guy and don’t realize it
That "Display Cake" joke got me more than it was supposed to. Top notch comedy
I miss this franchise universe wise it’s incredible lol
My hat's off to the editor who successfully displayed CAKE.
agreed, they really went the distance on that one
Killzone 2 almost had it, but master chief had a fully charged sword
Tbh i like the first, have fond memories of playing it on high school years
Yeah kz2 was/still impressive
This game was a masterpiece, even without the "killing Halo" stuff. Such a good game
Loved this game, but man IGN was the one that called everything that wasn't halo a "halo killer"
my guy didn't even use the secondary fire mechanics on any of the guns. The shotgun was especially kinda busted because it secondary fire was that it fired 2 shots simultaneously, but you could also fire the main trigger too and fire a total of 3 shots at the same time. it was pretty devastating. Lugar's SMG secondary was a very silenced, very accurate single shot. The enemies would not be able to tell where the shot came from. Killzone was a great game series but it was not a "Halo Killer"
I just remembered that my mall had 2 gamestops. We also had 2 in the same shopping center as a Walmart, Target, and Best Buy..
Man I miss the killzone franchise . Good times 😢.
The cake joke was amazing, I love your content dude and that only solidified it
As someone who mainly owns Sony consoles. I have to say the sound of a trophy unlocked is great!
I loved this game on PS2 back in the day. Was so gritty and grounded compared to other shooters I'd played
I remember playing this game on PS2 with its terrible graphics and framerate. I seem to recall having fun. Most memories are of playing deathmatch with my cousin; I think I remember a beachhead map really well.
Best video game speech of all time goes to that bald guy for real though
Killzone made fascist cool ngl
I'll say this much. I grew up with Halo and Killzone 1. The only way to make the Killzone campaign fun is to use Action Replay to give yourself unlimited ammo with the under barrel grenade launcher. Entertainment for hours.
Other than that, I genuinely enjoyed the mindless death match/team death match modes against the AI.
I wholeheartedly agree with this, I loved to use the grenade launcher lol I was like: ua-cam.com/video/1f-Ry560hfs/v-deo.html
Ahh killzone, there was the cool one, the good one, the “huh?” One, and the “i don’t know what the fuck is going on but this is pretty badass” one. (The last one is killzone 3 btw).
I always felt killzone was a wasted opportunity. Always trying to clone or dethrone some other fps franchise, it never took the time to find it's own footing.
As dicky and janky as this game is I enjoyed its personality the most. The depressing brutalist settings. It kind of had the not too sci-fi not too modern visuals too it like a pre halo reach.
Then as time went on they kind turned into the weird blade runner transformers thing in the newest one.
Less was always more for me in killzone.
I always thought these games were a great candidate for a good remake. They're all so close to being really great FPS games with just a handful of problems each that could be ironed out. I'd certainly play them.
@@Pattamatt1998 I would take a remake for sure. Granted it's done with respect to the original. That being tone, design and what not. Theres a bit more nuance I think than just checking off the nazi imagery and muted 2000s colour palette.
And I'd be over the moon if they kept the talent of Ronny and Brian Cox.
@@ChubbsterBrown couldn't agree more.
Oboe I know it was a throw away joke but 7:38 is a masterpiece
Not sure if you know but if you press the R2 button it uses the special weapon/mod on most guns, play as Templar and he has a grenade launcher which just helps so much, hope to see you play more Killzone's
The Helghast assault rifle had a shotgun. Enemies would actually use it on you if you got a little too close.
@@Root174 ye my god was that always a jump scare as a kid and always a battle to keep them away from you
I played Killzone 3 with the move controllers and a gun stock exclusively. It’s actually a ton of fun. Give it a try. Kinda wonky at first but it was really awesome standing in front of my huge TV doing it.
You know what DESTORYED halo? Mercenaries 2 World in flames (real)
Having a half-human/half-alien child isn’t as astounding when the aliens are just humans with Jaundice…
This was the first console online game I ever played. My buddy had a wifi attachment for his fat PS2 and we played this a few times in 2006
Watching this makes me want to replay all the Killzone games again, such a great bunch of games for me :D
The game is mid, but I had a lot of fun as a teen playing the multiplayer maps with my friend against the bots.
@MrDjBigZ “top game” 😂why because you love Playstation? Entire Killzone series is mid
I wouldn't call it "mid", I'd call it "good for what it is". Killzone focused more on large, atmospheric environments rather than action packed battles, and it honestly kills the aesthetic. The devs never intended for Killzone to be compared to anything Halo is, but the publishers wanted to market it as such to generate publicity.
Exactly.
@MrDjBigZ this is a mid shooter
@MrDjBigZ bro newer games are mid but that doesn’t mean there is no mid game in old era
in hindsight it's so funny how companies used to think one game could kill another game
Fortnite and Apex killed PUBG
@@yoloman3607 i didnt realise anyone played Apex, it always struck me as a constantly dying game
@@Rynewulf It made absolute bank and still does to some extent, EA says as much during their shareholder meetings
This was for my money the best sci-fi themed FPS on the PS2, with graphics that were awesome for the hardware, awesome guns (I actually love the Helghast StA-52 assault rifle) and the lore is one of the best I've come across.
Oh and I have beaten this game many times - I also managed to take out Helghast tanks and APCs using only hand grenades...
Killzone 1 has some neat ideas but ultimately... it was kinda weird and nothing was executed quite right. Edit: Still, solid enough game.
Killzone 2 however, HOH BOI THAT GAME IS GOATED. It's just so dark and grimey and claustrophobic. I'd say it's one of the really good "dark and gritty" shooters from that era of games. Also the story is solid.
And then there's 3 which like... decided to just randomly up everything to 11 and add shit like giant robots and ehhhh it just ain't it.
Not talking about spinoff/ later sequels because I know zero about em.
@MrDjBigZ nah grimdark killzone 2 is the goat of the series for a reason
Killzone 2 for story, Killzone 3 for multiplayer, though something must be said about the KZ2 multiplayer being absolutely awesome infantry-only bloodbaths, while KZ3 felt mechanically superior, the maps themselves never quite lived up to KZ2's probably in part due to needing more open spaces for the new toys
Killzone 2 was an amazing game. Up to its release, I only played Cod online. Then I loved that and got into Warhawk too
Killzone Liberation on PSP was pretty fun. Making it overhead instead of trying to shoehorn an FPS onto a system with only one joystick was the right call.
Liberation is its own thing, Mercenary is amazing and Shadow Fall is a generic FPS with the title Killzone slapped on it.
The best is getting an achievement on Xbox that most people don't have. The sound and the diamond appearing just makes me feel special. Playstation needs a cool way to make you feel awesome when you get an achievement not many have.
I look forward to the killzone 3 with just gyro aiming video
Hey Oboe, if you're interested, the piano in the school mission of F.E.A.R. 2 makes noise when you shoot it.
I actually really loved this game back in the day. Might not hold up very well nowadays though.
It does not hold up even back as far as the release of this version. That doesn't mean it can't be stupid fun though
Man, seeing the Reach customisation screen brought back memories. I don't play any modern shooters outside of TF2, but knowing all those options are paywalled now, and individually at that, brings me pain.
It's like you said, "the only thing that could kill Halo was Halo itself."
I knew what you meant but I still got a chuckle out of the 15 year old TF2 being described as a “modern” shooter.
@@devinmccanna645 It always feels like it's only been, like, seven!

Thank you @oboeshoesgames
To this day, I'm still stuck in the swamp level.
Beautiful cake joke. A good cake joke goes straight to my heart
Man I miss the Borderlands content so much I can't even go back to see the old stream highlights.
Reluctantly crouched at the starting line 🤣😂
at the mall near my town there were two gamestops on opposite ends of the mall, then a five minute drive away there was a third
I too got stuck in the swap level and never completed kill zone. Glad to know I'm not alone
7:38 You’re too good to us, Oboe
You forgot about Rico from Starship Troopers. "Rico's Roughnecks!"
My favorite part of this game is how the voice actress for the Spec Ops lady was clearly working with a crappy mic that peaked way too easily. The lazy-seeming "Incoming frag" or "Jan, nooooo" always sent me into laughing fits.
8:11 anyone else giggle at the night vision goggles poking out just a little?
4:50 My local Mall had 2 game stores within it. 2 rivals lol.
Bro I love your channel it reminds me of my childhood especially the jokes
Epic Bad Guy Monologue™ in the beginning was great
It might not have killed halo, but it was my first game ever and I still have a soft spot for it, I love killzone 1.
Its good regarding the atmosphere and locations (just fantastic) and story, it just has buggy gameplay
Playing the halo achievement sound gave me flashbacks to memories I thought were long forgotten
The Check Point bit was funnier than it should've been. Thanks Oboe
In 2005 F.E.A.R. was released, by the way, which plays flawless till this day
For those who don't know, the fans brought back the multiplayer for this. It's on the Rewired server.
I am so glad to see oboe playing a childhood game
I liked the video and I was already subscribed but you should definitely play Killzone 3 with only gyro aiming/motion controls.
Cant wait for the oboe's water slurping sfx to show up in some YTPs
I was doing an oboshoesgames marathon, and I saw this vid and I was like no way, really wow
I only remember a few things from first KZ: AI being so fucking bad that you could solo vs 8 and win, that annoying mix of smg and shotgun and glitching shotgun so it fired twice but used one round (most popular thing, but there was a ton of ways to abuse multiple firing modes). Yes, I played this game waaaay too much.
You didn't have to kill Halo, you just had to wait for it to kill itself.
5:42 I saw it coming from over 9000km away, and when it arrived I still loved it
We also had two gamestops in one mall, on opposite ends.
I just remembered the game Hour of Victory exists. It's an early 2000s ww2 fps that feels up your alley.
It's considered like the worst game of 2007.
So i played the demo for that game way back in the day and loved it. Got the full game and almost immediately returned it. It turned out to be the biggest crock of crap I've ever played
I love playing this on that summer jam ps2 demo
7:37 "display cake? Okay, here we go i guess" 🤣
We had 2 gamestops in a strip mall, an another one in the mall like 5 minutes away

I like, I’m already subbed, please for the love of god give me full game in move/ gyro aiming
I loved this game about the third time I tried to play it. Then I beat it and went right back to NG+ Shadow of the Colossus.
I love the part where handsome jack makes a cameo in killzone
I beat Killzone 2 again like a day or three ago and started on Killzone 3 again, and now you upload a Killzone video? You watching me Oboe?

I still love the KZ enemy designs with glowing red eyes
Alright, that Cake gag got me

I def want the killzone 3 gyro video
I used to play as Rico because his gun was the only gun where the bullets went forward.
I’m prob the only 2003 born kid who played these games… anyone else born after me play these games?
Genuinely there is no “___ killer” game that ever succeeded. Tf2 killer, halo killer, cod killer, etc. all dead and or dying
Umm akshually, call of duty was medal of honor killer in development. The only successful killer
My man really played through, and gave up on the game without knowing about secondary fire modes that almost all the guns have. The human assault rifle has a grenade launcher, the Helgast rifle has a shotgun, the shotgun pulls a Half Life and fires 2 round (bonus because you can pull both triggers at the same time and fire 3 at once), the SMG has a semi-auto shot that does more damage (1 or 2 shot kill iirc), and Rico's machinegun has a damn missile launcher lol. If you legit didn't know then I'm not surprised you had a bad time haha. Honestly, the variety of guns and what they could do is really what made the game special imo. Large variety of levels too, even if now they all seem overplayed.
From memory the other guns with secondary fire modes were the helgast pistol would do single shots, the 6 round grenade launcher would shoot proximity sticky grenades (but they do very little damage) the 3 barrel missile launcher will do a low velocity launch of all three, and the revolver cannon would do a double shot.
yeah but I can't blame anyone for giving up once they encounter those cheap one hit kill grenade launcher enemies, and having to keep replaying big chunks
@@evryfckinnameistaken true, but I feel like knowing you can send grenades back instead of having to just shoot them with bullets definitely would have helped lol
Hel(GASP) he didn't know .... also missed the elect nixon stickers...
My and my friend had so much fun on killlzone splitscreen
This is a great game. Also there's alternate fire modes for certain guns. Lugers pistol in single shot mode is not only more accurate its also a 1shot to the head for standard soldiers. The helghast shotgun can shoot 2 slugs with the alt fire and 3 of you press both triggers. The heavy machine gun has a rocket launcher attachment. The helghast AR has a shotgun attachment and the ISA AR has a grenade launcher. Also fuck what sony said. Guerilla Games said this is not a "Halo Killer" and was never meant to be. Sony is dumb sometimes.
if you have/had two GameStops in your mall, chances are one of them used to be an Electronics Boutique/EB Games in it's past
Killzone is a fondly remembered classic that stumbled a bit near it’s end and went the way of the dodo too soon, halo is a live service corpse that won’t be allowed to rest and is violated every few months so execs can get a paycheck. Who really won?
