I didn't have a PS3 that gen, but I actually remember Folklore being a game that really appealed to me. I'd love to see it come back, the aesthetic is fantastic
I stayed with my Xbox during that generation and I always wanted to play Folklore. It looked great, but I couldn't find more reasons to get a PS3 at the time.
It's funny because the only reason why I know of/played Folklore is because my mom found it on a whim back during the early PS3 days for $5. She told me the cover caught her eye and we played through the whole game together. We fell in love with it and I'm really sad this game will probably never get a port. ;-; If you ever want to play it though, I recommend you find a copy! It's definitely worth it. Shoot, there's even DLC for the game that'll be gone once the PS3 store shuts down.
Folklore was the entire reason why I bought a PS3 over a 360, and I honestly don't regret it. The PS3 towards the end of the its run had some amazing games. So glad to see I am not the only one that played and remembers this game.
Yeah, i got a 360 early on for halo, cod, and a bunch of other games. But later on I got a ps3 because of all the great games it was getting and it ended up being my favorite console of the two.
Oh man, my ex was OBSESSED with Tokyo Jungle. So many hours spent passively watching him kinda sucking at it lol. On a more serious note, I read an article recently talking about how copyright laws (and games companies being greedy) are preventing institutions from preserving and studying games as a part of our cultural history. Games are art and they are an important part of the times we live in.. so it sucks to hear that this is such an issue. Anyway, my point is - thank you for making videos like this that highlight lesser known stuff🙏
YEAH DUDE!! I'm glad Austin brought up Folklore because you never really hear anyone talk about it! And when you do, it's on a passing by basis. Maybe considering Live A Live is getting a port that's internationally released, maybe Folklore will get it's chance?
OMG, I literally screamed when 3D Dot Game Heroes came up. I own that game and I still have my custom character screenshots up on Deviant Art and got some requests for their files for several years 😁 Link, Zelda, Sheik, Sailor Moon, Poison Ivy, Snow from FF XIII, Ariel... I remember even getting a request to create that girl from Mega Man, Roll. The game still looks so pretty even today.
I also bought the game but it ended up on my unplayed pile of shame. Fast forward to today and I own a sealed copy of it a I’ve still not played it. The good news is the value is quite high as a sealed copy is quite rare and sought after.
This video unlocked a buried memory of my best friend in high school playing Tokyo Jungle after school one afternoon, I mostly remember being very confused by the premise and us yelling about how violent the tiny doggo on screen was. I think she got eaten by an alligator or something at some point, maybe a tiger? Absolutely lost our minds over this game for an afternoon and then almost entirely forgot about it.
Folklore truly is a unique game that deserved way more. Sadly “unique” doesn’t sell, what sells is doing/copying what everyone else is doing, so the consumer gets something familiar they recognize. Not something that challenges them.
I'm kinda happy that someone remembers that Folklore exists. It's in a really weird place in Europe at least where it's super rare, but nobody knows about it at all so its price varies extremely wildly and I'm quite happy that I managed to find one for 10€ back in the day when it's quite often being sold for over 50€. Still have my copy as well. Unfortunately I never got around to actually finishing it...
Folklore is one of the most nostalgic games ever for me. It would take way to long to explain but I adore it and I'm so glad someone has finally talked about it
I will never ever forget about Starhawk. The multiplayer was absolutely the highlight of the game and ate up 3k+ hours of my teenage life and I don't regret a single second of it. The mechanics, the adaptive soundtrack, the maps, the weapons, the flying that became 100x better and more like Warhawk if you swapped off of default controls, the buildings that had to come down from orbit instead of being instant leaning toward more strategy and foresight compared to Fortnite...everything just felt blissful when it all came together in a 25 minute, 16v16 match
PlayStation move heroes definitely feels like a monkeys paw of games, where you get a crossover of beloved characters with the catch of it being a weird party game .
The problem was it was a niche game which required the PS eye and move controls. It just wasn't what people wanted. No matter how hard they pushed it was never gonna happen.
A forgotten PS3 game I love is the Puppeteer. It was so creative and fun. I love Starhawk too. Africa and Folklore were 2 games I saw at my local game store, but never bought cause I knew nothing about them and was afraid of wasting the little money I had at the time.
From what I've seen, motorstorm has a strong fan base keeping it alive. But when you mentioned Apocalypse, I immediately remembered playing the demo when Target and Walmart had demo stations.
@@austineruption hey Austin, do you play much Japanese, non translated games? Bleach soul carnival 1 and 2 has zero reviews on UA-cam, which makes me sad
Folklore was a genuine surprise that I was happy to pickup randomly back then. I think I grabbed that and eternal sonata at the same time lol Folklore was a fun time and I need to revisit it again after all these years. I think it'd find a decent audience if it ever gets ported to steam.
True, but uniqueness doesn’t sell. Being “safe” “familiar” and doing the same as everyone else, does. Because if you pulled Folklore down from the shelf, you’d have to take a gamble at whether it was gonna be for you or not. With Assassins Creed and Call of Duty you know what you’re gonna get.
@@PikaLink91 The only reason I got to play the game myself is that I worked for Gamestop at the time, and we could check out games for free. There was a demo at my store, and I dug the game, so decided to do the full check out. I played it almost non stop for my check out time, wanted to beat it, so ended up buying the game so I could keep playing it. If not for it being free, I may have never given it a shot. The advertising for it was pretty minimal at the time.
One thing I love about 3D Dot Game Heroes is that every loading screen is a Voxel recreated homage of some game's box art. It's a really cool detail and there's some really obscure stuff in there too! You can tell that the people who made that game LOVED the classic games they were inspired by.
I liked Folklore well enough, but some of the monster captures could be very finicky. That and Ellen and Keats did not have a shared capture pool, which felt like padding.
Loved Folklore. I still own my physical copy. When mentioning From Soft you lead with Dark Souls, but Demons Souls is what actually started the franchise on ps3. (Though most people forgot about it until the remake.)
I'm so glad you covered Folklore. My dad, who had a PS3, would go thrifting to find 'new' games for us. My favorite game was this. Folklore. Such a weird fun game with a unique combat 'capture' system that uses the motion controls. Love the weird music too. Such a hidden gem IMO
The first thing that popped up in my head was Folklore and Tokyo jungle when starting the video. I loved Folklore as a kid, I remember going to my local public library and seeing it there in the games section, renting it, and fell in love with the setting and story, but sadly never beat the game. My sister bought Tokyo jungle on release day, both of us beat it, I remember the ending being sad asf.
When I first got a PS3 as a 5-year bonus for my job, one of the first games I got was Folklore because my wife wanted it based on the cover alone. I watched her play thinking I wouldn't care but... I got invested in it. There's just something about that game. It's alluring in a way that's hard to describe. All of the elements are just so unique and interesting that even if there's one thing not hooking you, there's enough going on to keep you going. Very few games are like that.
I absolutely LOVED Eye of Judgment! It was such a fun concept and was always bummed that it fizzled so badly. Excited for the eventual AR take on the concept at least
Folklore is one of my favorite games of all time, it has everything I could wish for in a game, a gripping story, interesting enemy designs, varied and unique dungeons, it's atmospheric (it's an atmosphere u often find in tv shows and movies, but almost never in video games). Video games aren't a power fantasy for me, it's an escape to fantasy
Prior to the Great PSN Outage, I was a person that used the Move for Killzone 3 online, and I thought it was amazing for aiming. With the central deadzone for precision work, and turning that worked extraordinarily well, I felt like a damn artist when using a machine gun, reloading possibly only once. Motion control for melee was also fantastic and quickly felt natural to do when you come around a corner and find yourself face to face with an enemy
Man, one of my first games on PS3 was Folklore and I thought it was so cool. I was convinced it would get a port down the line, still holding onto hope. Thanks for recognizing it and bringing back the memories.
YES!!!! I loved folklore so much and even the dlc was great. Definitely loved the atmosphere and the story was more intriguing the further in you got... not to mention the ending. I've honestly been hoping for a port and I still listen to ost tracks on yt to this day- and not just Nephilim by Abingdon Boys School. I got recommend to play the game by someone who knew I loved the Lost Kingdom games on gamecube, and you can see why that worked out so well for me!
I was waiting this whole video for Folklore. I have such a soft spot for that game, as it was one of the first games I played on the PS3 and I had so much fun with it. Never ended up beating it (for some reason I think I got stuck on a puzzle with Keats and ended up moving on to another game before I figured it out) but I still find myself thinking about it every once in a while.
I've passed on getting MGS4 as my first PS3 game in favor of Folklore. There was just... something about it that made me intrigued and curious in a way no other games available at the time did.
I loved the PS move. The rail shooters and stuff like Okami and Sorcery were enjoyable compared to other primary controller games. Changing it up and moving more was a breath of fresh air.
I love forgotten gems during that era. Both the PS3 and 360 have so many games that have just gone under the radar. One of my favorites is Remember Me, it was before Don Nod was really well known with Life Is Strange. And I really wanna play 3D Dot Game Hero if it wasn’t super expensive
YES! I was hoping you would mention Folklore. That game is beautiful. My PS3 has crapped out, but I want to replay it so bad. I love it so much. One of my favorite games ever.
was expecting Naughty Bear to be on this list. also tokyo jungle is so underrated. there should be more games where you can play as a quadruped animal (others i can think of: okami, dogs life, twilight princess, spirit of the north, lost ember, wolf quest, those furry-adjacent games like cereal soup and feral heart/impressive title, the 101 dalmatians ps1/dreamcast game, spyro if that counts, both lion king games and also the lion king part of kingdom hearts 2, beethoven for snes)
@@IdentityChrist oh i’ve been waiting for that one! was not aware it was coming out so soon :0 also happy to learn it isn’t a ps5 exclusive and is coming to ps4. EDIT: i just bought stray. this is the cutest game i have ever played.
Tokyo Jungle's Survival mode was kind of a rogue-lite experience, I bet it would work in today's market. Another Game Republic game that I loved is Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom, it's not a PS3 exclusive so maybe it doesn't sit in the same position as Folklore, but I feel like it's just as forgotten. It had this Metroid style level progression where you had to unlock powers for your beast friend to get to new areas, lots of projectile puzzles in the form of catapulting yourself in different positions, and a story about an underdog outsider befriending a magical monster and saving a doomed kingdom. About the only bad thing was the hilariously bad voice acting for the various animal NPCs you meet.
I loved Starhawk. Me and my sibling's never had Wi-Fi at home while we were growing up so we just played the split scree. Problem is if there are only two players the game doesn't start properly, BUT lets you infinitely kill eachother and gather resources to build shit. So we just played endless non-stop death match, or tried to take over all the energy vents while distracting the other. It was oddly fun for a simple standby mode.
I loved Tokyo Jungle, came pretty close to 100%ing it. I remember cursing the bad design of the map whenever it left me cornered somewhere with toxic rain or fog or whatever it was stranding me with no edible food. But also, you get to play as pupper
Even thought the official servers for ModNation Racers is shutdown, there is/was a fan-project to revive the functionality. I think they were able to get file sharing working back at the end of Dec. 2020; I'm not sure if the fan servers are still working, or if any other features have changed, but it's something to consider.
While only mentioned briefly here, I freakin loved Flower by ThatGameCompany. As a beautiful “pacifist” game about you (the wind) collecting flower petals and creating one long tail of petals that flies around and re-awakens nature as industrialization steadily takes over, it was one of those thoroughly unique games that truly felt made for me
@@danielisbell Is it really though? What made Flower excellent was its gyro controls. These are missing on the ports. With it the game is just a pretty face.
@@chdreturns I never bought it on PS3 specifically because I hated the gyro controls when I tried it. It's still worth playing with traditional controls (& preferrable for some of us). That said, it does seem to support gyro controls on PC with the Sixaxis. Apparently you have to turn off Playstation controller configuration in Steam or something to get it to cooperate.
Lair was one of the first games I ever played on the PS3, and it literally made me feel sick. The motion controls gave me some kind of motion sickness. It didn't help that I have had a really bad equilibrium ever since I had ear surgery when I was 12. As you can imagine, it was also one of the first PS3 games I ever traded in to Gamestop for store credit. :P
I loved Folklore. It was one of my favorite games on the PS3 that wasn't Borderlands 2 or Ratchet and Clank. Like you said tge atmosohere was really good. I remember the story being interesting and the combat was really fun. It's the only game that used the Six-axis that I only didn't hate but was actually used really well (Sort of lije what Ape Escape did for the Dual Analog). I always called it a mix of God of War and Pokemon lol I wish we got a remaster or a sequel or something. But like so many others (looking at you Eternal Darkness) I doubt it will ever happen. But I always look back on it fondly and am so happy you gave it a mention here in this video.
I played a bunch of these. Of those, Folklore was my favourite (I actually have eye of judgement with deck and everything. It is currently packed away and I cannot recall in which box, but I have it all). Folklore was fantastic and needs some love. Having said that, didn't like playing as the werewolf guy. Not big on werewolves in the first place, and I vastly preferred feeling like I was summoning these fae to help over his... channelling? Regardless, fun times, did enjoy quite a bit. Reminded me of Lost Kingdoms, actually.
I still remember Dunkey's video about Tokyo Jungle, always made me want to try it out, but I never actually owned a PS3. It looks like such a silly, weird game.
Hi! I played Killzone 3 online with the move controller, being left handed though I had to also get the PS3 nunchuk thing or the game wouldn't be playable due to only being able to hold the wrong side of the DS3. Game was fun! I definitely had the advantage over regular pad users, sniping was really fun, keeping aim at angles on doors/corners was way easier, characters moved so slowly that in close quarters you could just nail every headshot! Real good addition imo - but also don't miss it since moving to PC with mouse and keyboard near the end of the PS3s lifecycle.
The fact that I own around 70 percent of these makes me realize how left field my taste is. Also why I've always been sooo bored throughout my live. Finally, Folklore MUST BE remaster, it is such a magical piece of entertainment. As always, great video Justin.
Ranko reminds me of Crash Mind over Mutant of all things. Every cutscene in that game is also animated in a completely different style, from 1930's rubber hose stuff to South Park.
MAN!! This felt oddly nostalgic. I've played most of the games in this video, and I still own 2 of them! I haven't hooked up my PS3 in nearly a decade, but I haven't put it completely away either. I loved my time with it, and until I got into PC gaming, was my largest game collection. You are 100% right on Folklore. I loved that game, but like a dummy I traded it away AGES ago. The only issue I had with the game is it could get a little grindy at times, and on several occasions my sixaxis control would desync from the game, and I couldn't use the motions to capture the mons, unless I turned the controller off and on. Never had those issues when I switched over to the Dual Shock 3, but yeah that first round of controllers for the ps3 was rough.
Folklore was amazing. It came out before trophies were a thing and they didn't get added in with a patch like a few early titles, but if it had them, I would have platinum'd it. Every Folk, all maxed, including the ones you can only get through the online mode by grinding a bunch of points, which I had to do little by little at a friend's house because I didn't have broadband at home until 2012. When I got the PS3 it had been out a few years and I got it pre-owned in a bundle with two games, and one of those games was Folklore. It was also the first game that I bought DLC for, and first game where I bought all the DLC. My first exposure to it was a Toys R Us PS3 demo kiosk. Remember those? And I'm truly grateful for it. Sometimes, I'll turn on the PS3 with the disc in but not start the game just to listen to the music that plays when you highlight the game on the XMB. Magnificent.
Jesus, between Trinity and Folklore, you pulled at all my heartstrings in this video. Proud owner of both in physical copies, and despite issues, represent a lot of my gaming in my early college days.
I just bought a copy of each on eBay. About $60 each after shipping and tax. Yeah costs the same as any other new release and these should hold their value much better than most games.
With 3D Dot Game Heroes, I’m surprised it wasn’t brought up that one tune from the game, Breakout, has been most notably used as the outro music for Scott the Woz Though I’m sure most may already know of such info. But hey, for those who don’t, now ya do 👍
I loved Tokyo jungle. It just felt like it needed a few mechanics more (like non timed/linear survival modes) that I had hoped a sequel would get, but sadly never happened.
Speaking of Folklore, when I first saw it it reminded me of an old Gamecube series Lost Kingdom that had a similar tame monsters/assign to face buttons system, though I think there was some card collecting aspect of it in LK?
I'll never forget Folklore. I worked at a Gamestop after it was released and the store had like a dozen copies at any one time. I don't remember ever selling any or anyone ever trading them in. But they were always there and I guess a lot of people considered getting it cause the cases would pop up all over the store. Seeing and restocking those cases every day. The cover is burned into my memory forever. And this video was the first time seeing any gameplay.
Tokyo Jungle was such a great game. Really scratched that Rogue-like itch in a fun way. The different species also had stats drastically different enough to make gameplay feel varied and fresh and the ever increasing pollution challenge left you continuing to struggle for survival despite your stat gains during each run. 10/10
There is this one game I recommend if you’re into weird obscure games called stupid invaders it was made by a company called xilam who did oggy and the cockroaches It’s a point and click adventure for the pc and Dreamcast And it was based on a cartoon called “space goofs” with the theme done by iggy pop.
The European version of RT’s Longest Day isn’t terribly expensive and worth importing! The PS3 reads it as both a game and a Blu-ray movie (which is the only game I know of that does that) and contains both the game and all the Short Peace films. Definitely worth preserving.
Man, it's like you delved into my library! Love the focus on motorstorm apocalypse, I feel like that one goes underrated in comparison to pacific rift. Great shout to Folklore, and especially Ranko Tsukigime. I didn't know Zill'Oll was part of a series, I thought it was an original that felt like an old game with modern graphics. Their Bladestorm game is pretty cool, and fairly under the radar too. A game that I'd say has a somewhat similar level of quality, in that, it's alright and kinda cool, is Natural Doctrine. It's a unique take on strategy RPG, using the 3D environment the battles take place in quite heavily. It's got some really unserious/funny writing, kinda like 3D dot game heroes. It's that kind of game. It's also on Vita and PS4 buuuuut it feels right on PS3. Hidden games eh? Dark Mist is certainly one, it's from Japan Studio and pretty much an action dungeon crawler with a nice cute/dark Norse aesthetic. I feel like a lot of the hidden gems are well known enough now, but this one I only found out bout when scouring through Japan Studio's gameography (is that a word? It is now) upon hearing the news of Sony shuttering them. Still sad over that and evolution's closure.
@@azurepulse1870 I never got any dlc, the system I had it on got busted not shortly after I started the game, and I was honestly late to the party even then. But it definitely left an impression on me, makes me wish I still had a Ps3 to finish it properly
not enough people talk about folklore, i didn't get far in that game back in the day but i did love the style it was going for, would love to try it again
There was this one beat em' up that was digital only on the PS3 called "Revenge of the wounded dragons". It was only available for a few years before being delisted but it was kinda fun.
God, Folklore absolutely needs a re-release or a remake. No other game has ever come close to sucking me into its world like Folklore did. I wish I knew more people that played it, this game was a pillar of my childhood.
I think I have that Ranko game physically, remember it being around 10 bucks. Maybe a bargain bin at the store. It certainly was... unique lol I might appreciate it a bit more now that I'm older and have played a few NMH games and am interested in SUDA51.
So happy to hear someone talk about Tokyo Jungle after all these years! I used to play the hell out of that game back in the day. It was so weird but something about it charmed the hell out of me, kind of wish we could get a port of it to something modern tbh
I'm kinda hoping for a 360 version of this just so you have a chance to experience Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey and subsequently get sucked into that rabbit hole enough to do an entire video on them alone.
I remember really enjoying Rain and Folklore. Two big standouts on PS3 for me were Richard and Papo & Yo. Papo & Yo was super jank, but the story really hit me hard on a personal level. I am still super bummed that Richard ended on a cliff hanger that was never resolved with a sequel.
I happen to own Folklore and the first thing that sucked me in initially was the music. Melancholic, and yet, mesmerizing. Everything rolled in on its own after that, even causing my cousin to finish the game to completion.
A couple of the more unique and forgotten games for PS3 were the Japan-only f2p Weekly Toro Station and Mainichi Issho. Can't forget Fairytale Fights and Music Plus.
Ah, this reminded me Short Peace existed - I actually used to really dig this weird ass game, but ended up losing my original account, so just managed to order a UK imported copy. Hardest of agree on 3D Dot Game Heroes, I used to adore that game - hoping for either a sequel or a port. Thanks for the video Austin!
The PS3 is my favorite console, i am so grateful you have finally gotten around to making a video on it's less known about games. Edit: i think you did get to the most unknown and interesting ones right out of he bat, congrats, but i think Puppeteer and Rain should've gotten a bigger spotlight as i think those two games are pretty good, and have incredibly interesting concepts and gameplay. There is this one ps3 exclusive fighting game that is only available physically called Aquapazza that probably no one knows about, it's pretty good. If you manage to get a copy, then i think it could be a fun time with friends, it also has supers that are fully animated by hand and they look sick and is what initially made me play it.
Look.

the psp version of eye of judgement has an absurdly in-depth story mode with really good art
A forgotten PS3 game I love is the Puppeteer. It was so creative and fun.
I love Starhawk too.
Africa and Folklore were 2 games I saw at my local game store, but never bought cause I knew nothing about them and was afraid of wasting the little money I had at the time.
Agree, Puppeteer is awesome. I bought is about 5 months ago off eBay. Love it. So magical and charming.
From what I've seen, motorstorm has a strong fan base keeping it alive. But when you mentioned Apocalypse, I immediately remembered playing the demo when Target and Walmart had demo stations.
Austin deserves to trend on gaming.
Love you dude ✌
@@austineruption hey Austin, do you play much Japanese, non translated games? Bleach soul carnival 1 and 2 has zero reviews on UA-cam, which makes me sad
Folklore was a genuine surprise that I was happy to pickup randomly back then. I think I grabbed that and eternal sonata at the same time lol Folklore was a fun time and I need to revisit it again after all these years. I think it'd find a decent audience if it ever gets ported to steam.
Folklore and Tokyo Jungle, the 2 games on Ps3 that should've gone block buster but didn't 😔
Folklore was so good >
True, but uniqueness doesn’t sell. Being “safe” “familiar” and doing the same as everyone else, does. Because if you pulled Folklore down from the shelf, you’d have to take a gamble at whether it was gonna be for you or not. With Assassins Creed and Call of Duty you know what you’re gonna get.
Absolutely wished it got a remaster, or heck, even a launch for the new PS Plus service.
This is going to sound insane but Tokyo Jungle was part of why I got a PS3. The other being Deamon’s Souls
One thing I love about 3D Dot Game Heroes is that every loading screen is a Voxel recreated homage of some game's box art. It's a really cool detail and there's some really obscure stuff in there too! You can tell that the people who made that game LOVED the classic games they were inspired by.
So happy you mentioned Folklore, that game needs more attention.
What’s your job?
@@HolyClownFuckarus I left that job, but it was a graphic designer at an ad agency.
@@Boonehams nice, good bonus.
I absolutely LOVED Eye of Judgment! It was such a fun concept and was always bummed that it fizzled so badly. Excited for the eventual AR take on the concept at least
It looks like it gives mad Incryption vibes minus the ARG aspect.
Folklore was the first PS3 game that I had, and I really enjoyed it's darker tone and more 'folklore' aspects. It was very unique and alot of fun.
I love Folklore! I keep hoping for a port. It's incredibly charming.
I got the game used a couple years ago and now I will definitely move it higher up my backlog list!
Folklore was such an underrated and underappreciated game! It took me forever to actually get my hands on a copy... it was a truly magnificent game.
There was just... something about it that made me intrigued and curious in a way no other games available at the time did.
mgs 4 is sooooo fun and it looks so good
I loved the PS move.
Naughty Bear isn't an exclusive to PS3, I have it on my 360
Stray is one such game that's also coming out in less than two days. Hopefully it's good.
@@IdentityChrist oh i’ve been waiting for that one! was not aware it was coming out so soon :0 also happy to learn it isn’t a ps5 exclusive and is coming to ps4.
EDIT: i just bought stray. this is the cutest game i have ever played.
My prime gaming days. I've played every single game here. I loved eye of judgement and Tokyo jungle.
FOLKLORE APPRECIATION SOCIETY UNITE
I appreciate the society more than the game Lmao...I didn't get into it, but seemed original as F and that I respect !
Sometimes you just had to make your own fun, me and my buddy didn't have wifi either and we played halo reach forge for HOURS. It was a good time
I loved Tokyo Jungle, came pretty close to 100%ing it.
I played most of these back in the PS3 era. Was able to platinum Trinity and 3D Dot Heroes, but physically only have Trinity and Short Peace.
While only mentioned briefly here, I freakin loved Flower by ThatGameCompany. As a beautiful “pacifist” game about you (the wind) collecting flower petals and creating one long tail of petals that flies around and re-awakens nature as industrialization steadily takes over, it was one of those thoroughly unique games that truly felt made for me
Flower got a PC port. It's no longer trapped in the PS3. Same with Journey.
I'm glad you mentioned 3D Dot Game Heroes. I played a lot of PS3 games as a reviewer, but that was one of my favorites.
I'm glad that Puppeteer got a (small) shoutout in this video. I played it for free via PS Plus back in the day and found it to be rather charming.
I always called it a mix of God of War and Pokemon lol
I wish we got a remaster or a sequel or something. But like so many others (looking at you Eternal Darkness) I doubt it will ever happen. But I always look back on it fondly and am so happy you gave it a mention here in this video.
Was really happy to see you talk about 3D Dot Game Heroes, that game was and still is really treat.
"The Playstation 3 will be 16 soon."
Austin you can't just hit me with the raw level 3 at the start of the match like that
I still remember Dunkey's video about Tokyo Jungle, always made me want to try it out, but I never actually owned a PS3.
I really wish we had more weird games like this, I'd rather have 3 weird good games a year than 5 mulitplayer shooters every year
How to tell a game was made by Suda 51 without telling, the main character is a part-time wrestler.
The fact that I own around 70 percent of these makes me realize how left field my taste is. Also why I've always been sooo bored throughout my live. Finally, Folklore MUST BE remaster, it is such a magical piece of entertainment.
As always, great video Justin.
I think his name is Austin, bud.
Finally, I was running low on random games to order off eBay 🙂
Jesus, between Trinity and Folklore, you pulled at all my heartstrings in this video. Proud owner of both in physical copies, and despite issues, represent a lot of my gaming in my early college days.
Holy crap I used to own folklore! That game was so cool.
Tokyo Jungle was one of the best Japan Studio titles we got. Such a simple fun game.
I wish 3D Dot Game Heroes and Folklore weren't so darn expensive and hard to find. I should have never traded in my copies :(
3D Dot costs about what any new games costs. It’s not that bad at all.
I got lucky and found a copy of 3D Dot Game Heroes for 17 bucks. Folklore however still commands a lot...
I just bought a copy of each on eBay. About $60 each after shipping and tax. Yeah costs the same as any other new release and these should hold their value much better than most games.
I wish I lived where you are lol the used copies in stores around me in Ohio go for 80 bucks
@@utubecop11 Everyone lives near eBay.
"I'm sure we all remember the 'PS3 has no games' meme."
>PS5 literally has 5 exclusives
some things never change.
With 3D Dot Game Heroes, I’m surprised it wasn’t brought up that one tune from the game, Breakout, has been most notably used as the outro music for Scott the Woz
Though I’m sure most may already know of such info. But hey, for those who don’t, now ya do 👍
Unfortunately, after a few years people would forget that it was ever Scott's theme. (Except those who followed all of his videos.)
Tokyo jungle is so expensive in Europe
Tokyo Jungle was such a great game. Really scratched that Rogue-like itch in a fun way. The different species also had stats drastically different enough to make gameplay feel varied and fresh and the ever increasing pollution challenge left you continuing to struggle for survival despite your stat gains during each run. 10/10
There is this one game I recommend if you’re into weird obscure games called stupid invaders it was made by a company called xilam who did oggy and the cockroaches
It’s a point and click adventure for the pc and Dreamcast
And it was based on a cartoon called “space goofs” with the theme done by iggy pop.
That game is really hard to find.
Dark Mist huh? Thanks for the recommendation.
Folklore was so awesome ! I remember playing it back in the days and having a blast
Also fucking love Folklore, never actually finished the game though. Keats design always stuck in my mind
it got a little tedious going back and forth and grinding up small gains for your souls, but the ending was good. did you ever get any of the dlc?
@@azurepulse1870 I never got any dlc, the system I had it on got busted not shortly after I started the game, and I was honestly late to the party even then. But it definitely left an impression on me, makes me wish I still had a Ps3 to finish it properly
Keats looks like Otacon.
@@Gatorade69 he absolutely does. But not nearly as nerdy, despite his dayjob as an occult magazine journalist.
not enough people talk about folklore, i didn't get far in that game back in the day but i did love the style it was going for, would love to try it again
I wish I knew more people that played it, this game was a pillar of my childhood.
buy folklore u cowards
24:10 yoo thats my favorite videogame track in sly 2 its so rad
I think I have that Ranko game physically, remember it being around 10 bucks. Maybe a bargain bin at the store. It certainly was... unique lol
I might appreciate it a bit more now that I'm older and have played a few NMH games and am interested in SUDA51.
The best use of the PS3 Camera was for LBP 1 & 2 and making whacky creations with pictures of anything.
So happy to hear someone talk about Tokyo Jungle after all these years! I used to play the hell out of that game back in the day. It was so weird but something about it charmed the hell out of me, kind of wish we could get a port of it to something modern tbh
Thanks for spotlighting Folklore! I love that game!
I'm kinda hoping for a 360 version of this just so you have a chance to experience Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey and subsequently get sucked into that rabbit hole enough to do an entire video on them alone.
Mistwalker has been living rent free in my head for years and Lost Odyssey is one of my faves ever.
But yeah, i definitely will!
Edit: Rochard. Darn autocorrect
I happen to own Folklore and the first thing that sucked me in initially was the music. Melancholic, and yet, mesmerizing. Everything rolled in on its own after that, even causing my cousin to finish the game to completion.
I remember enjoying MAG a lot. It had huge online battles, like over 200.
