- Today we road trip the Sleeper Volvo 240 Wagon over 1000 miles down to Bradenton Florida (Bradenton Motorsports Park) and Orlando Florida (Orlando Speed World) to attempt to run a 10 second quarter mile and beat my friend Boosted John. Will the 800HP Turbo LS be able to do it?

All hail Caleb Targaryen, Lord of the seven burnouts
This 'do kinda works
All Hail the almighty turbo LS Volvo!
😂😂
Lol perfect description of the wig lol
You need to do more of these playful rivalries, and don't worry about getting pissed about your cars. This is the funnest shit I've seen in a while
I’m glad you liked it! 😊
I think caleb will switch to a sequential trans soon 😂
So much more fun too😅
If it wasn’t a street car maybe I would lol
I hope so, this was infuriating to watch
@@_Gingium_ air shifted🤔
Especially with the wig
The shifting is definitely it's downfall. I'm confident with a 4l80 and the right converter you would absolutely destroy that civic. I've seen turbo LS 240 in the 8s. Also as I suggested before and I don't know if was even noticed through all the comments...
The RS5R30A is banging gear monster that powers my ls Volvo 240. And ppl like mykemike have ran these trans to 1200hp in his sc. Plus it's lighter then the t56,tr6060.. just a thought, there cheap too!!
He definitely needs a full manual valve body th400 instead of an electronic 4l80. I think he’d like the manual shifting capability
Yes an auto would make this thing rip! I’m thinking I’m going with a built tr6060 though. It’s the easiest/cheapest option and will still greatly improve it!
@@_Gingium_ at least consider the RS5R30A.. it's actually lighter and cheaper. If I wasn't in New England and 12 hours away I'd let you drive my LS 240 so you could see. And pay you to help me turbo this thing lol... Love your fab work and easy going personality.
@@_Gingium_ naw th400 is def cheaper lol but the. I guess u gotta build a trans
He’d be faster with the sting if he’d just shift the damn thing right
Great video. I don't think it's only the trans that's the issue. You also need more tire, spinning on a prepped surface that is handling cars with double your HP comes down to your tire and launch tune. I get wanting the street look but if you are trying to dip into the tens, then I would suggest a bigger tire to put the power down and fix the transmission issue. Keep growing and staying humble.
Yup absolutely!
@@_Gingium_ Also suspension geometry, but thats a whole lot of black magic for someone who's not an expert.
@@yony52 i think he knows how suspension geometry works
@@christopherthompson2244 It would make for an interesting video!
Eh not so much tire, but he definitely needs to do a bunch of suspension work. A bigger tire with the same suspension issues will still spin when it unloads the rear.
400whp+ 2100lb Japanesium tub is no joke haha power to weight ratio is king
P.S. can you program rolling anti lag on your ECM, can also try brake boosting
after the trans, it looks like some suspension might be in order, it was doing the G-Body shuffle at half track.
my opinion:
get better rear slicks and lower your tyre pressure a bit more
you need to fix the rebound on the rear suspension cause when you finally grip on the launch the car bounces a lot
get a manual trans (a 5 speed will have a better chance of enduring the torque) and reinforce your trans and engine mounts if it moves too much when shifting hard
use flat shifting, every time you change gear the car goes out of boost( that's why it's slower than before)
maybe work on the intercooling piping cause it could affect lag, in combination of the bigger boost setup( maybe the turbo is too laggy on spooling. If it is hybrid turbo is the best option)
Agreed
Watching this video I feel your frustration. Giving it all you have and not being able to be better due to something you can’t really control. I know you’ll make it better ❤️
You might not have won the 1/4 mile. But you sure had to coolest car on track, nothing beats the charm of a 245!
People pulling up to track in their boring ass civics and ev:s. A Swedish sleeper wagon with a V8>>>>
It’s good to see you guys together 😊
That fuel issue seemed like vapor lock judging by the symptoms. Fuel lines near a heat source can definitely cause that (boils the fuel in line causing an air pocket that locks the line)
Loved the video you needed a getaway, brother!
regardless of its problems, the gearshifts in this thing sound absolutely insane though
The potential is crazy for this thing!! I actually thing just some more tire or a set of slicks for the track would help a ton ET wise, sure your losing tenths in shifting but if you can hook of the line you’ll can at least a second back this will run low 11s high 10s with ease imo
9s with some more suspension upgrades or adjustments
All you UA-cam car guys are so humble to each other and I friggin love it!!! That's the real car vibe I've missed. No judgement, no unhealthy competition... It's the world I've dreamed of lol.
I have two 400hp cars so I'm not at the caliber of most these guys but I freaking love it...
This is the best car video I've watched in ages, props to the entire team!
Dude absolutely keep this thing, I love to see it and I know plenty of others agree! New transmission would be a good couple videos I'm sure, plus more racing content out of it which rocks too. I love sleepers and the Volvo is one of the coolest I've seen!
You have adjustable shocks and all that on the Volvo right? I'd try talking to a chassis guy to get the chassis dialed in, swap out the bias plys for a true radial, move some weight around and swap the current trans for either a built manual or a built 4L80. The engine seems to be performing just fine for the most part. Adding some cooling for the fuel pump should help with the boiling issues. Also talk to a tuner that does drag racing. They can really help you dial in the tune to a point where you can make the right adjustments at the track. Love all the content tho! Good luck!
Didn’t think I would be seeing John again in Gingium video after he moved, gosh this is wonderful
This is the good drama and competition that we need! Absolutely missed this kind of action!
Damnnnn those 1-2 shifts with the pop and flame sound soooo good!!!
Loving this types of videos!! Cheers guys !
""MAN THAT THING WAS BLIPING AND BLAPPING BRO" HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHA BEST QOUTE EVER FOR THE VOLVO @30:01
gotta love it
Just when i was looking for something to watch after the F1, so excited🔥
Don't listen to the guys saying 4L80. A ZF-8HP is almost as easy to swap in, and easily 10x the transmission. BUT, I think you can still get by with the manual if you swap in some ACTUAL manual transmission fluid such as Redline MT-LV, MTL, MT-85, or MT-90. Do some googling and find out which viscosity it likes, then send it.
Other than that, try to do a faceplate mod to it, which will make it shift fast and hard without the need for a clutch, just like a sequential. Another thing I'd consider is re-gearing. You should be at the very top of the gear banging off the rev limiter as soon as your rear tires cross the line. You should either get slightly longer gears so you don't have to shift into 4th, or you should get MUCH shorter gears so you're at the top of 4th in the 1/4.
Don’t be so down on yourself gingium. You’ll fix it, and just listen to the reactions at the starting line in orlando, everyone was hyped about that thing going down the track! The car is sick and will do nothing but get faster!
Don’t know what year this 240 is, but it reminds me so much of my father’s silver 1980 240 (GL?). He bought Russ Converse’s wiring kit (and re-engineered it), dropped in a 5 liter V-8 from a Mustang, built his own dual exhaust. I don’t remember what transmission he used. This is back when only Jay Leno and David Letterman had these conversions. Not bad for a home garage job!
To be fair he was a bit of a 240 Guru. Wrote unchallenged advice for Volvo owners for years on Brickboard.
I got to drive it before it was painted and, yep, it was a sleeper! Nowhere near the power of this beast, but definitely opened some eyes. He did a two tone paint job, gloss black on bottom and a light metallic green on top. His car was featured on the back cover of “Rolling” magazine (out of print - would love to find a copy!)
Anyway…enjoy the zoom!
A 40 minute gingium video! What a terrific cap to the weekend.
Kick ass video and I feel for you with the shifting. Nothing is more frustrating than missing a shift when it matters. Keep up the good work and videos!
Wigium is here and it's glorious. Also don't blame the engine, that engine is easily capable of a low 10 second pass if not high 9s as is. The problem is the trans and actually putting the power down, could easily get a whole second faster just by eliminating the spinning and bad front track.
Don't give up on the Volvo, we love it. A tr56, 6060, auto, or sequential should fix your issues with the car. Swap out the trans and I'm sure you will have loads of fun with this car, and less frustration.
And not to mention this machine has so much potential. Some of the fastest drag and drive cars are Volvo's.
Buy the s1 sequential gm shifter kit. Then when you want to race, bolt that in and when you want to street drive put your current shifter back in. Which honestly I don't get wth is going on with that trans. I could bang the crap out of my t56. But I also wasn't making 800+ either. But that wig is freaking HILARIOUS. Damn ole "Wigium"
I haven't finished the video yet.. but from the drag footage its pretty clear your biggest issue with your time is shifting and the transient lag. As soon as you shift you are losing all your power and you can hear the turbo re-spooling. This is most likely due to the long shifting times(which i know isnt driver error) your launch is also close to good. You can tell your at the right RPM with the bog but not the right power. Too high and engine RPM and wheel speed are too far apart and you spin. You just need to up the launch PSI a little bit and it will most likely dead hook(or slip the clutch ALOT and youll get a good launch) drag racing is mostly about putting the power down. Sure a 100hp civic cant beat a 1000hp volvo but if your spining all the track it will be a damn close race.
it also sounds like your shifting right before peak boost. Your turbo may be slightly too big for the RPM range your limiting it to.
Bro you finally met up with boosting John after such a long time
Awesome video!! Always enjoy watching
I love the friendly rivalry between john or other friends its great and opens a great door as a content creator! With a better transmission that can actually shifts and better tires setup you will do much better time i bet it will be a PB 👍
Pressure in tank, look at the carbon canister and the return line. I just found a total return line blockage, unplug the blockage and all should be fine!
John really turned into that “make him sell it meme🤣”. But big props to Caleb for not giving up. Def try another trans? They aint cheap but sell the current one and get another? Maybe it’ll help having extra money for the next trans 👍🏼
At least you got a good road trip with the boys! I also have a LS swapped Volvo with a T56 and have struggled with the transmission. Mostly destroying clutches and pressure plates and dead throwout bearings. Fixed most of it by correcting the bellhousing cocentricity. The transmission is still a klunker but it is at least functioning.
thumbs up for caring for seatbelts
Great video ,extremely well put together 👍😃
Damn. That was sick. But devastating end. Want to see the Phoenix rise again, better and faster baby!!!!
great video. i rooted for both ya. You'll be back. The new look is... something lol.
The fuel issue you have is bcause the fuel tank vent is clogged. Its creating vacuum as the fuel is burnt, thats why when u took of the hose it magically fixed itself and the sound when the cap is removed.
Hope it helps ;D
Cheers from Portugal, been here since forza vids.
I used to run new holland hydraulic fluid in my 5 speed. my friend said if its good enough for a huge tractors pump it will be okay for my little car. Transmission was fine through many engines 100 000 km on a ceramic clutch. may take the "notchiness" out of it, allow you to get the gears slowed down faster to get in into the next gear
The gang's back together, and ripping it!
If you want to Drag race this car AND WIN.... you need to go Auto Transmission or a MUCH better Stick....
Trans break on the Auto....building boost plus those "Street" slicks are pointless if you are driving the car on road tires then going o the strip.
Get some Real Slicks.
Nothing but love though! amazing!!!!!!!!!
yeah i would have to agree with the tyre part and i also think he should just strip it lol
RS5R30A!!! If u want stick... I'm telling you all with top loader it's like banging gears in a stock Honda.
Time for a new trans! And tell John if he wants some help with that civic, hit me up!
Great video. Hope to see the wagon cruising around Atlanta someday.
As a fellow stick shift racer that has experience with drag racing faster cars.... I can confidently say that SOME of your issues is your shifting. One instance i saw you try to bang 3rd before your foot fully depressed the clutch. Your 1-2 footwork is money! A t56 magnum is the move for sure. That'd def help. I usually practice in staging lanes as if I'm racing, and also make a habit to record my shifting and pedal movements during the run. Anyways, don't take this as overly critical. Hope you have better luck and more importantly fun
Thanks for bleeping so it's family friendly when I'm listening to your videos! Good luck stay safe
You need to hold the gears longer. Car sounds really happy shifting at 6700-7000 but on your last run you hit second at 5. The last thing you want to do is jump out of your most powerful gear early. Also if you have adjustable shocks see if you can get those dialed in. Set your shift light 300 early and don’t shift till you see it that’s what helped me
32:02 damn Legolas! you lookin' good
LOVE THE VID :D Gingum of Rivia coming in next vids :D love the volvo and the progress .. progress :D hehe
I feel like most of the problems with this car, other than the trans obviously, is the suspension. If you had some real drag suspension that let you squat harder, with some much wrinklier slicks would let you get into the 10s
The suspension is pretty good. It needs good slicks and some clutch/damping tuning
With a 4 link you don't want it to squat. You want the axle to separate, pushing the tires harder into the ground.
@@jonathan7744It has more to do with tire and racing surface than suspension. No prep small tire separate.
@@Whosurdaddy71 mullet and leroy both have the typical separating suspension, they are both small tire prep... Doing a lot of research into 4 link drag racing suspension set up everyone says to have a greater then 100% anti squat. it's not just no prep that uses it.
@@jonathan7744Well no shit. Typically slicks if it’s 4 link or leaf spring it doesn’t matter it’s 100-115 antisquat on a slick. If you run a drag radial it’s higher antisquat.
Cool to see in my hometown been here for 35 year's drag race on that track all the time eat the food where you're where you're at love this place everyday traffic is terrible around here....
hell yeah 😯more driving like this, i love it
Gingia came up at 32:01 lmaooo
Shifting, plus the civic has allll the grip, still the volvo is a flyin tin can dude, so awesome
Go on get ya a 4l80. Stock will hold up a while with good converter
Time for a built trans, gotta keep the manual such a cool build!
This car is the reason I watch your channel, I love this thing. You've gotta do what you'll enjoy the most, but I'd love to see the trans replaced, and kept manual.
I drive a 244 in the same color! Keep this brick going! I love seeing it in action and keeps me dreaming of ls swapping mine ❤😂
I love the pops on the shifts!
They ask how your doing and you just have to say your fine 😂 … loved the video burnouts high speed street and track hits cool noises great video
my 200 hp, 5,000 LBS Chevy Blazer 4x4 got hood stripes and no exhaust, My daily driver and I FUCKING LOVE ALL OF IT, bas MPG, no heat, stereo system and ALL. I drive nearly an hour to work in this beast 5 days a week. NO REGRETS. 4.3L V-6 just cruising.
“The Eclipse doesn’t count, that burnt down” 😭 my heart
27:36 JUST SUMS IT UP. WE LIVE TO FIGHT ANOTHER DAY. BOBBY BOUCHER
Amazing video! Loved every bit! The wig was the best!!!! You have to go behind enemy lines and get a Honda to beat his Honda! Do it gingium, I’ll drive my H23vtec Honda del sol down to help lmao
I think gingium is just jelly of John’s super duper cool civic
Lol at the ending I'd definitely love to be in attendance if you made a trip back up here GLD is always a fun time
Get sequential box/shifting? Wider wheels n nice tyres? Great vid again. Cheers
Thats a solid 450whp volvo. You need a bigger turbo, bigger turbos fix everything!
that was a great video man sad to see you all defeaded. but damn those pulls were hard good work
Seriously underrated youtube channel.
Bro I fuckin LOST it when he sat down with the wig 😂😂
Yeah I’d just go with an automatic, which does pain me to say… but it’s not like it’s a nimble car, and if you wanna chase ETs there’s a reason most purpose built drag cars are automatic. There’s things that can be modified on your automatic options that will give you most of the feeling of “banging gears”.
Idk. If you were to gut it, do some extreme weight reduction, cage it, and modify the suspension then keeping it manual would be fine, but if you’re gonna drive a sofa, may as well rest the left leg.
Glad to see I’m not the only one thinking “auto trans!” I was a manual purist for a while, but once I found out how much easier it is to use an auto for drag racing, I think they’re underrated
When he sat down with the wig, I lost it!
32:04 Your a metal or grunge dude now 😁👍
THE WIG THO 😂
Same thing happened to my 240 bumper 😂
Aluminum mounted with steel bolts corrodes 👍
hey super funny thing i noticed. at around the 10:30 mark, where he is at is the same place cleetus macfarland originally blew up his white c7 a few years ago.
That thing is rowdy with the lunch control. Poping like a thunder.
Your Volvo is sick I wish I own that
Yes! 4l80. It's an automatic, so will be consistent, plus it's got an overdrive so you can still road trip the car. With the right converter, that Volvo would rip. You need some suspension work too, that thing is squirrely
I’ve never laughed so f’ing hard. That wig bro…
“How does a civic stack up against a now 800hp sleeper Volvo?”
Me: it sheds weight and gets awd swapped is how 😂
Nah bro, just gets a laptop and a deathwish
Great video! I wish my car would run a 1/4 mile in under 12 seconds.
That sound though 😊
I really think getting a drag auto would make that volvo insane also getting some wider bigger rear tyres.
You need 3 things.
1. Less Weight
2. More grip/Better launch
3. New different transmission.
Safe to say it is wig time Caleb. You put up a good fight. That 800 horsepower is definitely a riot though 😂
That last race was SUCH a good race. If you hadn't missed 4th it would have been incredibly close. Really fun journey no matter what! Them synchros just ain't doin' it.
Bro the wig is actually pretty dope. You pull it off!
Loved the video, the trans does need to go. But the car is still awesome AF!
Selling it might your best move. It's a really cool novelty car, but it's a really heavy chassis. I think a new dedicated drag build, on that you could drive on a race week would be sweet.
Otherwise find a way to make it lighter. That's the only way it'll be successful. 800hp should have that thing going faster than it is.
Gingium targaryan let's go 😂😂😂
Sequential transmission, no gated, no side shifting, just higher and lower. Don't kick a project just because of the one issue. Plus, even if you rebuilt the car, you were still learning its new personality. Don't bash yourself. You've gone far, you can go farther!
