I read your caption “no more spare” and AC/DC song started playing in my head. The car really pops. I like that it is not a huge overhaul. Just a freshen up.
In the early 70s I was fortunate enough to meet a hot rodder who was just an amazingly smart person. Nearly everything I learned about building hot rods and race cars was from him. I want to leave you a tip that even to this day I follow to the letter. "No matter how anxious you are, The car does not leave the garage until everything works. Every light bulb etc. every thing is double checked and every bolt and fastener is checked twice. If you do this, no disappointments," You are a very talented individual and find the coolest cars! Keep it up...
So now you are going to add your own custom touch to this hot rod! What a concept. Where is the world going? Next thing you know Hersey will be cancelled. No! That will never happen. That license plate redo is really a nice touch. Can't wait to see the car doing down the road.
I think this is a great way to clean up the lines of the car and get it a lot easier to maintain. It is also what we did back then too. You put the spare in the trunk or behind the back seat and be done with it. You don't really need a spare most of the time anyway if you run good tires and carry a fix kit and 12 volt compressor. This is a great looking car.
The fact that you left the body alone so the next owner could put the spare tire back says a lot about your passion. Ultimately, she is yours and you can do whatever you want. Looks good my friend.
I like the license plate mounted there...takes the focus off the spare, and lets you see the body lines on the rear of the car better, and shows off the taillights. Looks clean. Great job.
In my opinion... Real Hot Rods don't have a spare tire. This does create an issue for obvious reason. I do like it better with tire removed and new custom plate bracket and light combo. It also directs your eye to the tail light stanchions. Mid to late 30's coupes and sedans had some cool looking tail light stanchions.Nice job !!!!!
Really like the change...cleans the back end up nice. The paint really looks good too. Like old school hot rods and what you're doing. Actually, do what you want to the car - it's yours. Heck paint yellow polka dots on it (I wouldn't but you get my meaning). The rod I'm building is to suit me and no one else. It's an old school roadster BTW. Keep doing what you are doing...great stuff!
I'm glad you took it off. An upholstered spare tire was popular at one time, as were many other features which do nothing for the car except date it. High front end, narrow whites, primitive mag wheels are just not appropriate today, even for a '60s "retro" street rod. We've evolved. The vintage Cal Custom plate lite is a very nice touch!
I was on record that I kinda liked the spare with a different cover color, but I'd have to say Matt the license plate certainly does clean up the back and is symmetrical to the look of the back end. I'm guessing you'll have to wire in the license plate light, correct? It was a cool solution and after all, it's your design and vision and that's all that matters. I hope you, yours and the rest of the Iron Trappers are healthy and safe and I look forward to your next episode. Cheers from an old retired coot living in Tennessee. ❤️👍😷🍻✌️
Hey Matt, As usual you put a lot of thought into it and the result is Great ! The clean up job was well worth it too, the car looks so nice and shiny. Now the dropped axle in front and it's a magazine cover car again !
Love the new plate spot, hated the spare, looked like a conversion van with it on. Your the 3rd owner, dont forget your part of the history too, nothing wrong with adding your own taste to it, its not like you plan on making a modern street rod out of it. Glad to see you respect its history. Cant wait to see it on the road, hope you can find new tires that are close to the ones it has now, those ribbed side white walls are slick with the mags.
Matt & Co. you nailed it!! I was "for" leaving the spare tire on due to the way Larry had built the car, but removing the spare tire really cleaned up the back end, looks great!!! Build on Dudes!!
Good job,Matt! Thanks for using my idea! It makes me feel like part of the process. (In reality,it wasn't my idea, but "our" idea;I'm sure others had similar thoughts/comments.)This car just keeps on getting better!
I love the over all vib of the car Matt. These are what I remember seeing so many years ago at the James Dean Festival in Fairmount Indiana back in the 1980's. Home of James Dean and home of one of the largest car shows in our area. Thanks for the memories and for keeping the car period correct! Zip~
It is your car do what makes you happy. On a side note I liked the plate low and tight to the car with the Hollywood light fixture. Either way I enjoy the videos so keep them coming, and I keep commenting and liking.
Awesome. I love it. I took the spare off both my cars. 30 coupe and 28 Tudor. Hotrods don’t have a spare on the back. Well, most don’t. lol My favorite. 👍
Looks great but what only matters is that you like it . It's your car so you can do what ever you like with it . Keep up the awesome work take care and stay safe and stay blessed see you in the next one
Matt, every time I watch you, I feel like I'm watching a really amazing artist painting a masterpiece. You create beautiful pieces of art out of nothing. Although this bracket is simple it's also very impressive and looks like it's an original part of that car. You are so talented. I love your work.
I was one of those guys against taking that neat "old school" spare tire off. As much as I hate to admit it this is definitely a better look. I just thought the white interior was SO retro and campy that the spare tire balanced it out. But by removing the spare you updated the whole exterior and modernized it. Now the interior is like stepping into a time machine, or a "Way-Back" machine if you're a "Rocky the Flying Squirrel" fan.
That is a great solution, and it looks fantastic! I agree with your taking the overall car as it is but maybe continuing on a little in your own way taking it to the next step. That is not anything different than how these cars progressed back then.
Car looks great Matt, that buffout/polish on the paint came out soo nice! I think the plate holder looks much better than the white vinyl circle did. Nice thing is, you can remount the spare in the future if you choose to get a set of 5 matching wheels, so the cover isn't needed. A nice set of wire wheels always looks great on a 34.
Matt, you did no wrong with putting the license plate to the centre. Loved the spare, but this reduces clutter and draws your eye to the clean lines of the car. It does sort of make the dip in the bumper a bit awkward though. Overall it’s definitely a nice touch. Now u got me second guessing the whitewalls lol!
Good idea zillustration, he could also get a pre-drilled bolt or drill one himself and put it in one of the upper bolt holes. Matt, it does make the rear look cleaner and simpler, carry on McDuff.

That's the answer. The back looks much better, never liked the plates hanging off the tail light. BTW the paint really cleaned up nicely. Great car!

That's a BIG improvement. Two thumbs up.
Great idea, and it looks much better without the spare tire !
really cleans up the rear, definitely a mod from back in the day!! Looks great!!
Love the back of the car with the spare gone. Good choice on the license plate bracket, cleans it up real nice !

Yep you’re right!
Even though the spare was a 70's thing the car looks much, much better without it. Keep up the excellent work with the old gems you find.
The fact that you left the body alone so the next owner could put the spare tire back says a lot about your passion. Ultimately, she is yours and you can do whatever you want. Looks good my friend.
Something so simple can make the back end look some much cleaner. Nicely done
Cleans up the back of the car so much matt... such a simple idea yet tidys up the whole thing 👍
I liked the spare where it was. That was a 70’s thing. But I can’t argue about the tag replacing it because you nailed it.jmho
I liked the spare too, the spare distracts from the "tall-ness" of this car. However, the tag mount is excellent!
Looks fantastic Matt! I can't see what controversy there could possibly be. My motto is "your car your way". Keep up the good work Bro.
I like the license plate mounted there...takes the focus off the spare, and lets you see the body lines on the rear of the car better, and shows off the taillights. Looks clean. Great job.

Looks really good, that change made the car looks even better.
Thank you for the up date on the 1934 Ford Tudor ! Take care , stay safe and healthy there in Pennsylvania ! Still doing well here in Kansas !
I really like that new license plate holder, good job.

Thanks for watching Paul!
Paint & bracket look "GREAT". Enjoy your videos too, and great that we see "how" it can b done your way!
Hi,,Looks good, alot cleaner👍Cant what till ur driving it.Cheers
I think it looks better with out the spare, the car looks great after the clean up!
Great job Matt, looks and runs a lot better now that the funky spare tire is gone, good decision man.
Thank you John!
Looks so much cooler nice job on cleaning up the back of the car I thought the spare tire looked kind of dorky now it looks full on hot rod
I agree! Nothing wrong with the spare but this is a bit more “hot rod” we agree!
I like the look of the plate at the back! You can see the rear apron better!
Agreed! Shows of the beautiful curves of the car better!
WOW!!!!! I see what you mean about cleaning up the back of the car!
Very subtle! GREAT!!!!
Good decision Matt, love the look, nice and clean and still keeps the era specific feel of the car.
Matt the plate bracket does make a huge difference man u are getting close with that car cant wait to see it on its maiden voyage 👍
I was on record that I kinda liked the spare with a different cover color, but I'd have to say Matt the license plate certainly does clean up the back and is symmetrical to the look of the back end. Cleaned up the rear of the car nicely!
Hey Matt,
As usual you put a lot of thought into it and the result is Great !
The clean up job was well worth it too, the car looks so nice and shiny.
Now the dropped axle in front and it's a magazine cover car again !
Thanks! Yea gotta dig around and see if I have a spare drop axle that’s a little narrower to get the front wheels under the car better.
Hey Matt
Don’t like red as a colour ,
but wow it came up good ,
looks great with or without spear , love the show
Love the new plate spot, hated the spare, looked like a conversion van with it on. Love the licence plate relocation but I also like the look of the horns on the 34 Fords.
OK, I stand corrected. The license plate looks better than the spare tire. Excellent job making the bracket, too!
Thanks Jon!
One word "yes". Spot. On 👍
That looks 100% better than the spare tire.
Looks really nice. Much better than the spare tire. 👍👍
Awesome modification! Makes the whole back area look nice and clean!
Matt & Co. you nailed it!!
I like the way you replaced the spare with the tag bracket. Nice save. It looks great. Now put Kate back in the credits.
The plate and light look perfect in that location. Certainly balances and streamlines the rear view of the car.
Yehhh! Everyone has their opinions, and it still looks period and clean. You don’t need a spare wheel these days.
I liked the look of the original spare wheel mount but this is way better, well done, nice job.
Tag light and mount looks better then the tire mount
Looks great....nice clean reposition of the plate and the whole rear end looks lighter aesthetically
I love the over all vib of the car Matt. These are what I remember seeing so many years ago at the James Dean Festival in Fairmount Indiana back in the 1980's. Home of James Dean and home of one of the largest car shows in our area. Thanks for the memories and for keeping the car period correct! Zip~
Looks great. Much better then the spare.
Great ides to put the tag in place of the spare.
Like the plate mount. Much better than the spare holders. Shows the car’s lines.
100% agree!
Looks great love doing those little fabrication projects.
Looks great. True craftsmanship great job.
Looks far better without the spare. Super car!
Fantastic save! As a “street Rodder” of mid 60’s- late 70’s in California this placement was the rule. The “Nerds” ran the spare tire🤪
Hahaha I feel like that was the rule from the 50’s even! I ain’t no square or a nerd mannnnn
Never said or even thought you were Matt! You’re a kool traditional hot Rodder. Always in style!!
It is your car do what makes you happy. On a side note I liked the plate low and tight to the car with the Hollywood light fixture. Either way I enjoy the videos so keep them coming, and I keep commenting and liking.
Thanks for watching
Looks so much cleaner without.... I like it!
License bracket looks good I wondered what you would do to cover painting issue on back pan came out great 👍
Very nice and simple, cleans up the car and is another custom touch by you. Well done
Thanks for watching!!!
Awesome. I love it. I took the spare off both my cars.
30 coupe and 28 Tudor. Hotrods don’t have a spare on the back. Well, most don’t. lol My favorite. 👍
As much as I love the spare tire mount, the license place mount looks quite sharp. It really does clean up the rear of the car quite a lot!
Thank you! We have the spare tire stuff if we ever want to convert back!
@@IronTrapGarage That's what's great about bolt-on mods.
Keeps getting better. Needs whacking with the lowering stick though.
Agreed! Hoping to tackle that after we get the fuel and cooling system all dialed in. Soon!
Looks great but what only matters is that you like it . It's your car so you can do what ever you like with it . Keep up the awesome work take care and stay safe and stay blessed see you in the next one
Love the clean look of it now. Looks killer
Matt, every time I watch you, I feel like I'm watching a really amazing artist painting a masterpiece. You create beautiful pieces of art out of nothing. Although this bracket is simple it's also very impressive and looks like it's an original part of that car. You are so talented. I love your work.
Thank you Russ! Just trying to put my own very subtle modifications to the car while still honoring the history of the car.
You made the right choice...looks great.
I was one of those guys against taking that neat "old school" spare tire off. As much as I hate to admit it this is definitely a better look. It still has a old school look on the outside, just cleaned up the look! Thanks for watching!!!
If you didn't know different, you would think first that it had always been like this... a good one for Matt
That’s always the plan!
Good idea and it looks good ! The best part it can be taken off and no damage was done
Great cover up. That looks like it was meant to be.
That was perfect look sharp. Your very talented, that why enjoy your videos so much. Thanks👍😀
Nice mod. Looks much better than the spare tire!
Genius job on the license plate Matt it looks great ... Jose👍🏼
Every time you touch old red you improve it
I love it 👍👍😍😍
Thank you!
Looks great. Cleans up the rear. Love the fab work.
One small suggestion...make a tag bracket with a drop-down on the bottom that mimics the drop-down in the bumper .
Hi Matt. That's a well designed bracket and It does look better than the spare! Greg
Better without the spare, looks great!
That is a great solution, and it looks fantastic! I agree with your taking the overall car as it is but maybe continuing on a little in your own way taking it to the next step. That is not anything different than how these cars progressed back then.
It's YOUR car which makes it YOUR choice...that being said...I love it, it looks great!
The new tag mount looks great but I'm old school and I prefer the spare tire. Change is good though !
I much prefer this look. Also Matt, I couldn't help noticing that you've got some cool tattoos!!
Thanks yea I acquired a couple over my lifetime.
Looks good Matt. Good solution. Like the light.
Clean look is the way to go digging it
I like it with or without the spare, looks great now!
That looks awesome Matt, cleans up the back of the 34 nicely.....👍
It looks heaps better. I like it Matt 👍
Much cleaner. I changed my mind. The pain shined up nice!!
Looks good!😊 I didn't think I would like it at first, but it fits!
Looks great I don’t miss the tire at all good job!
Good idea
zillustration, he could also get a pre-drilled bolt or drill one himself and put it in one of the upper bolt holes. Matt, it does make the rear look cleaner and simpler, carry on McDuff.
The new liesence plate holder, cleans up the back of the car
We agree!
Looks good both ways ,it's all a matter of taste !
Looks great Matt, I love it. If it was mine I woulda done the same thing.
Looks much better now!
Hey Matt I like it with out the spare tire man the car looks awesome polish up "sweet "
