RECORD BREAKING Super Stocker Wins Again After 52 YEARS

  • This car ran ONE SEASON ONLY. 52 Years Later, it's running the same E.T.s! Larry Nelson drove this 1955 Chevrolet 150 Utility Sedan to the NHRA Summernationals Super Stock Eliminator victory in 1972, and racked up many other wins during the 1972 season. He also set the Super Stock "T" record with his outstanding 265ci small block Chevy and three speed manual transmission. He only ran the car for one season, moving his drive train over into a two-door station wagon, putting him into SS/U. He tried to buy his original '55 back several times, but never had any luck with the Smith Bros. One day, it popped up for sale and he was able to get his old car back nearly 50 years after he sold it.
He went to work to rebuild the car to its winning ways. He put together a KILLER Stock Eliminator 265ci package and WON the first big race he entered in 2024. The coolest part is that he won at the same track he won at 52 years previously in this awesome car. Larry Nelson not only built successful race cars, but also had a successful career at JEGS for 50 years. Now, he has retired, and plans to beat on the ol' 55 even more in 2025.

I believe this is the coolest drag car I've seen in years...maybe decades. It captures the essence of what drag racing was from back when I was a little kid. Normally I'm not thrilled in seeing yet another sbc engine in a hot rod, but this is a huge exception. A 265 base engine is beyond cool, especially in a car with this history. You have FANTASTIC taste in old cars, HRH!

This car was the beginning of the history of the Chevrolet OHV V8, the amazing Chevy small block.
    In the 1960s a friend had a 1955 Chevy with a 265ci V8 and 3-speed.
I helped him put a 4 bbl and dual exhaust on it, which pepped it up a little.
This UA-cam channel is very important for the history of racing.

I was at the 1972 Summer Nationals in Englishtown, N.J. I REMEMBER this car. No lie !!! I remember it because it was a 265 with 6.14:1 rear end gears. It was a crazy combination with, I think, a WCFB on top of a factory intake. I did not remember the color, but remembered it coming through the traps with that little mouse motor sounding like it was lifting off toward the moon. Just because it had 265 painted on the fenders.THANK YOU SO MUCH for making this video. You made my day !!!

6.15 gears and slicks. Not a 265. Listen to video. Allowed to bore 80 over and increase stroke. I know some that made the 265 into a 292 that would rev 10,000 rpm. All the suspension upgrades etc. etc. etc. Super Stock not Pure "Stock".

@garybray3614 did the 292 have 10to1 compression with steel rods and a stock cam height on the lobes and the stock valves in Power Pack heads. Stock carb The Super Stock guys could run any intake they wanted roller cam and lifters any size they wanted any size tire they wanted as long as it was under the body.NHRA has allowed fuel cells over stock gas tanks for safety reasons same for drivers set.You can't find NHRA approved spool and axels for a stock rear end.

Not a big Tri 5 guy myself, or 265 V8, but this is damn cool none the less.

265 was at the bottom of my list of favorite engines until I saw this car run haha. Pretty neat to squeeze some power out of it.

My first car was a 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air Poster like this body style. It had a 265 V8 in it also.

Great story, yes! There were several racers out of Zanesville back in the '70's, one of them raced a silver TH400 COPO Camaro in Super Stock that he had purchased new. His name escapes me now, but Louis Antorietto bought it back around 1990, and restored it, removing its wheel tubs and relocating the leaf springs back to their original location. I have to wonder today, if it would be just as valuable in its "as raced" condition. This Buckeye native loves to see Uhio cars (that's how ya sayit), hope to see some more.

Zanesville definitely had a big group of hardcore drag racers.

Yes, the 150 models are so clean and cool. Even cooler with the Utility Sedan as it had no back seat and stationary quarter windows.

Love that 55 race car. Just pulled out a barnfind 1955 210 two door wagon that was a former drag car. It was Glacier Blue with blue n white interior. Has a blown up 265 with a Z28 cam. Had a tow bar and tons of race parts. Had stickers on window that read CREITZ RACING EQUIPMENT from Tulsa, Oklahoma. I’m trying to find original drag racers from 1968. Any ideas on old two door 55 wagon drag cars? Love your channel!

Oooh that sounds cool. Creitz made some cool stuff. Intakes, spindle-mount front wheels and a few other things. If you have any pictures of it, I'd love to see it. My email is byrdrods@yahoo.com.

It's a 305 block, which is an accepted replacement for the 265 block.

Will be the most reliable drag car you can get !
Not braking drive train parts for years. To get 1320 out if a 265 ci car is cool. 😎

Sure nuff …it backfired and caught fire and burnt the 2bbl , … I removed that 89,000 mile engine/trans
and Pickled it ! and it is available in the San Antonio Tx area
