We Spent $10 On Exhaust And The 1934 Ford Tudor Sounds Like a REAL Hot Rod!!

  • If you remember back to when we first got the 265 Small Block Chevrolet running in the 1934 Ford, we were shooting acorns and rust all over the shop. The exhaust was packed full of junk, including a mouse carcass, and the exhaust sounded very muffled and dull. Today Matt plans to change that completely. Our local custom exhaust shop cut and flared short pieces of exhaust tubing. Matt plans to remove the clogged mufflers and install straight pipes as a quick fix to get the project on the road. The nice thing about the straight pipes is the can easily be removed and small mufflers can be installed to quite the exhaust. Let us know in the comments down below what you think of the sound. Is it to obnoxious? Or is it just right!!

Two thoughts, first, it sounds like you have a miss on a cylinder, the way it pops every couple seconds. Second, the muffler choice is one to deliberate over. That loud hotrod sound is fun, but only sometimes. If you decide to take it to a show, or event that involves a bit of a roadtrip, you'll wish for quiet and smooth. I have to agree with many here, take that car to your exhaust shop friends for a better system that routes it less haphazardly. That 34 will be a gem to drive, make the 39 your loud ass brawler car, hell, the seats are loud, the exhaust should match!😁

My Grandfather had made a chisel for separating exahust joints, he ground a half moon shape in the end of an old flat chisel and re heat treated the end, works great, you can use it to "peal" away the outer pipe flange without ruining the inner pipe.

You are lucky about the inspection not being required. My memory of 55 plus years ago is that dad had more problems with the inspection process once he put antique plates on them. The big problems were finding mufflers to fit.

I'd be interested in seeing inside those old mufflers too! Not only to see how blocked up they are but also the way they were baffled internally. Pretty long and narrow. Might be a useful muffler for some cars that have limited underbody room for "normal" mufflers...but require more sound control than simple glass packs. Wonder what they were originally designed to fit? Guess that part we will never really know...

As the rears are going underneath the axle there may always be a risk that the extreme suspension movement will tear out the mounts (probably at the most inoportune moment!) had you considered having the exhaust tails exiting ahead of the rear wheels on each side? That would help with excess noise as it would be on each side rather than all at the back, makes the pipes shorter, which can't be a bad thing! Just a thought!

now that you have it almost streetable and given that the engine is a stock "cheby", ick, it would be a good time to start bringing together the parts, from your "stores" and build, over time, a gussied up Flat Motor with a nice set of heads, maybe even Arduns, a ported block, relieved if flathead config., a ported 4 pot manifold and as much chrome as you can stand. Then get that "cheby" out of there.

I have watching your channel for about two years now. You are an exceptional fabricator and welder. But for the life of me I can’t understand why you have to to follow that old cheap A?? way of doing that configuration of exhaust style on that ‘34. A suggestion would be glasspacks and four U Bends to take that exhaust over the differential.

  • @jonlennon3348

    Hey Matt,
Since you have access to the muffler guys, I would say re-route the pipes above the rear end parts.
Back in the day we did the straight pipes mostly because the muffler shop was too expensive to install muffers, bend and hang the pipes.
And we had bragging rights to " We did it our selves".
Shorty glass packs will be quiet for the first few miles but then they burn out and you have straight pipes again.
An equalizer pipe and turbo mufflers will still sound good when you rev it but you won't have that loud droning on the highway.
BUT, First it needs BRAKES !
Then a test ride with Kate holding the cam so we can get her take on it.
Then decide what to do with the pipes, which by the way are already done !
Thanx fur taking us along on your adventures in hot rodding.
    Be safe and well
    Live long and prosper

Early '60's Hot Rod... I'm thinkin' some Smittys or Douglas glass packs and some old school cheap Hedman Headers. Then you'll get "that sound" without getting a headache. You didn't mention what tires you're getting? Maybe 6.70x15 front and 8.00/8.20x15 rear??

Man, I hate exhaust work, but that went pretty easy. Awesome as usual!

Sounds great! But will it pass public approval!

It should be tolerable with the pipes exiting the rear. If it was my car, I would want to bend up some tailpipes over the rear axle which would tone down the obnoxious factor just a little bit more. I also DON'T like the battery being so exposed!!
P.S. I had a Blazer with a 350 and glass packs with no tailpipes (exit of the mufflers under the front seats). It was INSANELY loud! It had a stereo that could play loud enough to hear, but when you shut the car off it left my ears ringing!

'Way too loud, IMHO. A pair of mid-length Smithy's from Speedway would be just right with 2" pipes and cast iron manifolds like you've got. They are on the quiet side, but that car is too nice to be obnoxiously loud.

A couple questions. Don't you own a shop vac? Your blowing shit over your shop. I'm still learning with you but didn't you lose engine back pressure by deleting the mufflers? Finally I get that bias ply were the tire of the day but aren't there radials available that look period corre t? Outside of that $10 well spent. Cool look at the under side or the car. Thanks.

When is the gentleman that originally started the rebuild on this car coming to see it. It would be nice to hear what he has to say. I think it needs the glade packs.

If you go muffs, check out the Dynomax Mini Race Bullets. Cleans up the sound with some rumble.

I have to vote for the glass packs, too. No need for a car that classy to beat your hearing up, while you drive it.
You've done that car, and Larry, proud, with what you have done with it!

Man, what a greasy and dirty mess under that car it is. You guys need to remove the body and start over. If it looks this bad under, chances are it isn't real good topside either. Good luck with your expensive mess.
