    FYI Folks, at least some of the VP44's have a bracket at the rear that goes down to the block with a pair of 13mm bolts. It will not come out without pulling that stupid bracket. Ask me how I know. I don't know if that truck did not have one, or if Rich just forgot to mention it. My 2000 had it.

    Ive heard its a good idea to super glue the key into the keyway when you go to put it back inn to help reduce the risk of it falling off.

    Loved the video very helpful. Just letting you know for future reference. You don’t actually have to take both injection line sets off just the front one. And also the two smaller bolts on the intake horn fit perfectly in the two slots on the gear for pulling it out. just some things I picked up. Doing it myself after watching this video thanks for the help.

    If you don't mind me adding to your video Rich...when replacing g the VP44 ..I always replaced the fuel line from fuel filter housing to VP44 to a 1/2" hose..I think the inside diameter is so small the fuel..like you said isnt enough cooling for the computer box on top of pump..with a half inch hose..you get more fuel to the VP and more cooling to the VP for the computer box..I stalled a new vpp44 I got from the diesel store .com in 2009 along with a HPFP fass 95...in a friend's 01 Cummins and it is still going today..first thing I do with those lift pumps from the factory is throw them in the trash..lift pump goes out..takes out the VP44 ..there not design to pull fuel from the tank like CP3 on a Duramax...great video Rich!(keeping in mind of cost as well)lot of folks don't know about the half inch line upgrade..and I always super glued the wooddruff key into the shaft ..tap it down in there a little and make sure the top of the key is parrell with VP shaft..

    I wish you had done 2 things: 1. showed a picture of the puller attached to the drive gear. 2. showed a picture of the drive gear from the rear before installing the unit.
    I don't
    understand what holds the gear in time while you remove the pump unit.

    • @stephenliviniuk7039
      @stephenliviniuk7039 5 років тому +1

      All you need is a steering wheel puller. The gear dosent get pulled out, all your doing is pushing the vp44 out if using a steering wheel puller. The gear stays in the timing cover, and it cannot go out of time or fall out

    • @jdillon8360
      @jdillon8360 3 роки тому

      the timing can't go out because the drive gear is connected to all the other timing components inside the timing cover (crankshaft, etc), plus it sits in its own bearing/bushing.

  • @ToddKing

    Seems like your nomenclature is off a bit, Rich. You repeatedly call the key a keyway. The keyway is the slot machined in the shaft and the key fits into the keyway. Not busting your butt, just want to make sure everyone understands what you are talking about.

I am having starting problems and watched your video on that. As important as that lift pump was to the life of the high-pressure fuel pump there should have been a fuel pressure gauge to monitor the lift pump pressure. A design flaw, perhaps intentional, that assures your high-pressure fuel pump will fail and cost thousands.

    You’re right about making sure the key is lined up for reassembly because when I reinstalled mine it was lined up 90% of the way and ended up going all back together. Turns out the key is timed perfectly for the pump so just by the key being barely off to the side of the key way the motor couldn’t run. When I removed it again it had barely taken the edge off the key and messed up the pump timing just enough to not run right. Took forever to find a diesel shop around that had the same numbered key that would match up for my pumps timing. Installed it perfectly lined up and the engine ran great.

    • @bretbreakall1582
      @bretbreakall1582 5 років тому +2

      Educate me Google User or anyone, I have not did one of these but are you telling me that there are different keys for different pumps that will change the timing? How can that be when there is only one slot on the shaft and one keyway on pump? did you not have it lined up perfectly and you shaved key by tightening it up? I guess I do not understand how the key can not be lined up and it still goes together easily? Thanks for your input, sorry for my ignorance, I consider myself pretty mechanical minded. (maybe not now)

    • @bretbreakall1582
      @bretbreakall1582 5 років тому +2

    • @jdillon8360
      @jdillon8360 3 роки тому +2

      six440pack I have a hard time agreeing with the VP44s reliability. I replaced mine along with a frame side lift pump and still have issues with the computer telling the pump it needs to go to limp mode. Code reads the throttle positioning sensor and boost control module are bad even after replacing them both with OEM parts. It’s something in front of all that. I’m so deep into it I can’t sell it or fix it.

    • @railfan8895
      @railfan8895 5 років тому

      Do the math on that project. $3000 for a P-pump conversion. That $3000 will buy two quality VP-44s plus a high performance lift pump system. That should cover you for the life of a typical truck.
      Plus, when you convert to the P-pump, you’re going to lose cruise control functionality.

  • @hcg9199
    @hcg9199 5 років тому +3

    I'm sure you know but the key way is typically an offset key. When you order a new VP44 there SHOULD be a new key with the new pump. Make sure you use this new key. If something happens and you mix up new and old or whatever you can read the number on the top of the key ways and it will correspond with a number on the side of the VP44 housing. Those numbers need to match for the correct offset key to be used with the correct VP44. Maybe this will help someone in the future.

    I loved my 24V but this is why I’ve gone away from diesels. Between a remanufactured CP3, new lift pump, & a remanufactured set of injectors you’re looking at $4,300 just in parts. For my 2015 RAM 1500 a new OEM fuel pump, and new OEM set of injectors is only $614 USD *and you don't have to replace all 8 at the same time just because 1 goes out*

    That was not a original vp44. There should be a bracket that is bolted to the block, and a bracket on the VP44 held on by 2 13mm bolts. I would not recommend running a vp44 without the bracket, the timing covers crack from the weight. And if the bracket ro the block is missing or broken, they can be purchased at Cummins. To get easy access to the bracket bolts on the block, do not seperate the power steering pump from the vacuum pump, just remove the 2 bolts holding the vaccum pump on and pull out of the way the whole assembly. Do not run a vp44 without the bracket!

    i have 80k miles on my vp44. i had installed a "less then 5psi" warning light. a few months later in alarmed. so i replaced the factory carter twice and installed a gauge. the carters just wernt pumping enough and at cruise speeds coldnt maintain 5psi. my cummins is in a motorhome. so freightliner recommended i change my fuel lines so i did and still no luck. so i purchased and installed a air dog frrp adjustable. it pretty much sits at 15 psi which is what air dog recommends... cummins says 8psi. alot of guys say 15psi to keep the check valve open so the cooling of the vp44 is maintained. at 15 psi i dont think it starts as well. i cut the adjustment spring and can now turn the pump down to 9 psi which is about 7 when cruising. i have removed my return full line at 5psi and i have lots of returned fuel. so i think the check valve is open at 5 psi and cooling the vp44... ive also read that the vp44 is not to be force fed which i think is happeneing at 15 psi or anything over 8 psi. im wondering what dboss or anybody else thinks about this.. what psi do you run or recommend thx jim in the soo

    I hate those pumps and any pump that's 1/2 electronic and 1/2 mechanical. VPs, CAPS, and Stanadyne pumps on the 6.5 Chevrolet have one thing in common they are junk. P pump it and be done with it.

    Dont forget about the bracket that you cant see under the vp44. You will wreck stuff and make your life hell if you dont remove it. Best case scenario i only have to remove my power steering pump and use easy outs to get the broken bolts out of the block for the vp bracket. I might have to replace my vp44 and tear the truck apart to change the gear case because i didnt remove that bracket.
    All this to replace a really bad leaking tappet cover gasket.
    Its like the time the turbo drain tube was stuck, so my buddy cut if off so we could get the turbo out and get at it, then the last 3 inches of the metal fell into the block and i had to do a pan removal (several hour job). Im just so lucky.

    Once again, the patience of Job pays off. I would have just swapped out the p-pump and hoped for the best. Everything indicated a pump problem. Given the prevalence of this pump on tractors, some mechanic locally must have seen a similar problem. Good work. I maintain a 5.9 Cummins powered 1998.5 Dodge 2500 and a 1999 Dodge 2500. They are not powered by the p-pump but it is nice to compare. I carefully note anytime you work on second-generation Dodge diesel. And yes, I have swapped out a VP 44. Thanks for the input.

    Nice video. My new lift pump tricked me into running out of gas at just under 1/4 tank and now I can't get'r running. Put 10 gal in, bled the top forward banjo on the filter then bleed the return line on the vp44. get good pressure squirts from that banjo. Then I had someone crank the engine with #6,#4, #3 injector nut loose and when I saw pulsing flow I'd shut that one then the next and next. But it still won't start. 1yr old ECM and 3 month old lift pump. Lots of cranking is wearing on the batteries. And they are tired after the failed ECM issue when mechanic shops(two of them) each drained the batteries trying to diagnose(kept telling me it was the vp44) but would always start the truck fine over the past year. Do I need to bleed more injectors?

    Question: do we leave the drive gear in the housing and simply pull it loose from the pump shaft? From what I saw, I couldn't tell it we were pushing the pump or pulling the gear? And will the gear stay in place even though we are moving it? Thank you.

    Rich, great video,
    I did my injectors, your video was great on that as well. The VP44 came out great and new $2k VP44 went in just as great too, but what is that lil bracket for on the block side, near the injector lines, I was using the pry bar last night to get it off and couldn’t until I saw that bracket, it’s got a 10mm bolt holding it in...not sure what it went to or if I need to put it back?
    Anyone else maybe??

    Maybe you can help... I was having an issue with a surge in my tyranny. I read that it could be an electrical issue or my converter so I cleaned all my battery and ground connections and it quit. But then lately it has been dying when shifting from reverse into drive or vice versa. Any suggestions?

    Couple questions man..i literally use your videos for everything i do on my cummins. But anyway are you saying that bad battery/ connections will make vp go bad or can cause that check engine code? Just a better understanding. And my other question is when i turn key on it takes about 10 sec or so for my wait to start light come on. Truck runs great. No CEL.

    Did you know that that key is serial numbered to the pump? The number on the key is stamped into the VP pump and should not be interchanged. Chrysler also says to verify the lift pump volume before replacing a P0216 code. This used to be a star part which means the dealer cannot replace the pump without first calling Chrysler's star hot line.
