I rarely check google for vids of anything. 2/3 have no idea what their talking about and do crap that doesn’t need to be done. Thank you for posting a correct process
That's sounds like my issue. But my truck I just bought had a brand new VP44 and new lift pump installed before I bought it. I'm in the process of sending my ECM in to be looked at and repaired. The symptoms were dead pedaling at first then would accelerate normally after warming up. Also the Wait To Start light would not even come on sometimes along with the lift pump.
Thank you for posting this. I ended up here because I have to change the tappet cover gasket, so I need to remove the vp44. This is a good video of how it's done. I have watched a few, because sometimes one guy will cover a certain step, while another will gloss over that same step. The ending made me sad when the new pump didn't fix your problem. I sub'd & hope to see the solution in a later vid! PS I've been trying to get the gear off for 3 hours. Made a puller from a piece of scrap metal I had. It bent. Made a stronger one, and I'm afraid the metric bolts are going to snap before the gear pops. Went to TSC and bought some stainless steel bolts for extra strength over the carbon steel. Wish I had some hardened steel bolts! Will attack it tomorrow.
stainless isn't necessarily stronger! buy some grade 8's. once the puller is on and tightened, rap the end of the screw with a hammer. the vibration knocks it loose. If that doesn't work, try some heat. Also, my problem ended up being a bad ECM. Thanks for watching, and good luck!
@@themadmailler What engineer thought up the idea of bolting the ecu to the engine block where it gets cooked & vibrated to death? Maybe I can get those GR 8 bolts from Graingers or MSC Supply.
Hey what were the symptoms of the vp44 going out, like did it started to smoke 💨 my fass pump went out and didn’t know drove it around 3 days straight. Now it’s putting blue smoke well white smoke with in burnt diesel.
If I may ask what codes we're you getting when you had this trouble? Most of the time I get a p1689, but I have had a p0216 pop up twice. Truck can sit and idle and rev fine and seems to have zero issues in yard but if I drive it down the road eventually in with rev up on it's own or try to die with throttle response cutting in and out. I'm just trying to narrow down what it's deal is. Ecm or vp44 or something else. Any help would be much appreciated. I've been trying to figure out what going on with it for over 2 years. It just really with in the past 6 months decided it wanted to throw a p0216. But it's mostly just been the p1689.
If your still having dead pedal change the apps and make sure the voltage is between .50 and .60 , use a volt meter, put the red prong on pin3 and black prong on the negative terminal of battery with the key on, truck off. Do all this with the apps installed just lose the bolts and adjust it
Good job those thing ain't cheap so if it's not the tps and not the vp44 I'm out of ideas any codes ? I have an 01 and my biggest fear is the vp44 make sure you are supplying the pump with plenty of fuel perhaps a good lift pump Iet me know if you figure it out good luck bud great video
I replaced my pump and bled the pump a little, but now I’m getting no crank out of it. I haven’t been able to get the truck to even bump. I’ve replaced the starter, and tested the batteries. It’s still not cranking

Thank you!
Going to be swapping out my vp44 in the next couple days here. Video helped a lot!

Thank you for the lesson it was very help full the way you explained everything .

@@savage22bolt32 Cummins, i guess. Stupid!! tractor supply or hardware store should have the bolts.
Thank You for Your Experience!!! Very Much Appreciated!!!
Fantastic video! thank you
Excellent video I learned a lot
I like it iv stuff a 24v in my 87 Chevy crew cab and will be shit canning the vp44 and putting in a ve pump

Throttle was all over the place, but my problem actually was a bad ecm.

Did you use a puller to take it out? Or just by removing the 15mm nuts?
Did you get the timbo apps? I've heard of a lot of people having trouble with the parts store version
Yup, timbo!

Thank you for this video now I’m a go change my tappet cover it’s leaking oil like crazy
This was one of the things i tried. didn't work, because as it turned out the ECM went bad!
@@themadmailler what did ya do to fix ecm ? send it away or find a new one ?
@@TheCaperfish brought it to a shop to verify it was the ECM, and they replaced it. Ouch goes the wallet!
How did you know what size bolts threaded into the gear pulling holes?
Tried a bunch until something fit. I think it was metric.
Just to verify, the dead pedal was caused by a faulty ecm, and a new one fixed your problem?
yes.

I have an airdog pump, and will be installing a pressure gauge when I get the parts in.
Did you ever figure it out?
It was his ECM
Thank you.

bad ignition switch, or clutch safety switch? This may be an unrelated problem that just happened to pop up now.
Do you have to drain any oil to remove the vp44 ? I have to replace the cap that goes on the other side of the vp44 we’re the bolt is.
you do not.
Dame hate to hear it didn’t fix the dead pedal.
Have you found the problem?
Bad ECM.
If you pin the cam it will break loose much easier
