Ah, the first Zelda. Actually playing it with a map is the authentic experience, since the game came packed with a map when it initially released. Link's movement is grid based, so he'll line himself up with the grid before changing direction, which explains the delays in his movement.
Also, you missed the dungeon item. In the room right before the Hands room, you need to kill all three goriyas (they're not moblins) and you'll obtain their boomerang.
Take your time before you go for the 2nd dungeon. If you explore and fight for rupees, you can find a few items in shops, like the blue candle, bombs, the arrows or a better shield. Bombs are a requirement to beat Dungeon 2, though you can also find some in the dungeon itself.

One thing I wish I did was look at the manual. It gives you SOME idea how the map is lain out. I ended up just mapping it out with graph paper. Main grip was the game essentially expects you to burn _every_ bush and bomb nearly every wall. Absolute torture. And further insult when some of them punish you for it.

Okay, so that was a little painful 😅 But it's okay! you didn't grow up with this kind of game. So fact is, we all had the map for the most part. Nintendo packed one in the box separate from the manual.
Now first timers don't realize, but bombs are your best friend. There were many walls in Lv.1 that make the path faster, and actually damage gleok a lot faster. Alternatively you could have collected a ton of rupees on the overworld, and found a shop selling a big shield so you could block the dragon's fireballs. Ah. and you missed the boomerang- not that it matters, you get a much better one in Lv.2 anyway.
Good play! Although, me at six probably would have kicked your ass in this game😅

Yeahhh, when it comes to the 3D Games, I know them like the back of my hand. When it comes to the 2D ones, I wish I had as much knowledge 🤣😅

Back in the day, I lost the save so many times when I forgot to hold reset while hitting power. The struggle was real, but overcoming it was a huge achievement.

Yeah I definitely get why newer releases like Nintendo Switch Online let you use save states and rewind and stuff

@@danny_krow I remember being utterly shocked and dismayed that the Wii’s Virtual Console would allow players to use save states, but now it feels completely normal. Good that it is there more people can enjoy classics. In early NES days, all you’d usually have is a handful of games, so you’d get really good at them.

It's cryptic but if you want difficult play Zelda 2. The difficulty curve on that rockets to the stratosphere a couple times.

Oh trust me I know lol! At least with Zelda 1 my record is getting to like the 4th dungeon or something like that. With Zelda 2 I don’t think I even ever beat the first one
