- Time to talk about a niche series of games from the Sega Genesis. SURPRISE: I don't like them very much! Regardless, they're interesting pieces of media to talk about.
I also go on a couple weird side-tangents, because I like to have too much fun with my scripts.

As a kid I was obsessed with the deep ocean and wanted to become a marine biologist. So i bought this game when it came out on the wiiware, because who doesnt love dolphins?
🐬I no longer want to be a marine biologist. 💙
Good call, because the field is saturated and there’s almost no jobs.
@@Mia-dt3gl "Marine biology is a highly competitive field in which the supply of marine scientists far exceeds the demand" damn that's honestly sad. I've taken an animal behavior course and heard some horror stories about how slim it is for zookeepers as well

John 3:16-21
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

I like how 90s Sega wasn’t afraid to try out unique experiments like this, Comix Zone, The Ooze, and Nights into Dreams.
Agreed. With Dreamcast almost the entire first and second party game library was a unique experiment.

The vortex queen scared me so bad as a kid I threw out the game…that shit however didn’t fix the fear. Started and kept having nightmares about it from the age of 5 to 13. I got the game again from ebgames. It took me that whole summer to beat that awful eldritch spooky bitch. The nightmares finally stopped.
If you thought she was scary, you should try the silent hill series 1-3. If you haven't already. 😅
@@kawaiipop07 i think the vortex queen is more heart attack levels than any boss of the first 3 sh games.
I guess you gotta float in an isolation tank while on ketamine to deal with that
I seriously don't get how 90s kids, or anyone could beat these games without save states
I feel bad for them only having, like, two games, back then. So they had no choice but to hunker down and throw themselves at whatever games they had, regardless of how difficult or BS they were.
We had passwords back then
It took a very, Verrrrrry Looong time but it became fun.
Exactly. I had dozens of games throughout the 90s. I can count on one or two hands the amount of games I actually beat. I've beat more games this year alone than I managed to beat in that whole decade. From this aspect, the 90s is better experienced in 2021.
Game Genie
I'm sad that Ecco 3: The Dark Sea was cancelled because Sega wanted some crappy edutainment spinoffs rather then a 3rd mainline title to be released on the Sega Saturn.
If it HAD been released on the Saturn, a dozen people would have bought it. And the few hundred fans of the Genesis games would have missed out anyway. LOL
@@orinanime You are underestimating the average sales numbers of video games.
@@Nathan-rb3qp No. I was being hyperbolic and sarcastic about the lack of fans for Ecco and lackluster profits for Saturn.
@@orinanime Oh. Sorry.
@@orinanime I mean, could still play it later through re-release or an emulator so either way we got gypped out of a third one with fancy graphics
Ed said the following: the Vortex Queen went back into prehistory, and after being stomped by the local wildlife, found she couldn't dominate Earth's ecosystem. So instead she integrated, evolving into current lifeforms (i.e. arthropods). Ecco knew that would happen, so he went to the time of the Atlanteans for reasons.
I feel like I understand the concept of this game, but at the same time... I don’t at all.
*gets over pylosophical about fear*
Yeah... I just wanna hear about a dolphin with stars stuck on its head.
My interpretation of the whole "Vortex Queen escaping to the past" thing from the end of Tides of Time is that Ecco goes on their own time-travel adventures, helping out sea creatures like a sort of nautical time cop, and the Vortex Queen fails to dominate the Earth again, instead being forced to integrate with Earth's natural ecosystems, either slowly disappearing within a million years or so, or kickstarting the evolution of another intelligent race, such as the Atlanteans or just humans in general. I personally think it might be the latter. I feel like thematically the Vortex symbolizes that egoistic separation from nature and the universe you mentioned at the start of the video(really well written, btw), so it would make sense. That would make Ecco and the other sea creatures a sort of counterpoint, representing complete harmony with their environment, and, if my interpretation is to be believed, would make humans a sort of awkward middle ground between the two positions, adding further credence to my theory. Just my two cents, I suppose. Great video, you did the series justice and helped dispel a lot of rumors about the connection to the Lilly controversy at the same time. Also, your editing style is quite good! Very skillful.
The Wikipedia article states that she's the evolutionary start point of Arthropods. So that could be something
I think she represents aliens
That fanfic ending of Ecco 2 gave me chills. That is some good storytelling.
It was kind of dark though. Ecco losing his mind from being spinning in a vortex for trillions of years? That’s so messed up and unnecessary. Just have him traveling to different time periods at will and having adventures. Keep his life span to normal dolphin years. No need to torture Ecco to insanity as his reward for success.
It was long, drawn out, repeating the same existential dribble.
@@iwanttocomplain Yeah, I was expecting something similar to Ben 10's Professor Paradox, based on how it was initially going, but nah. Just went on and on about how mentally devastating being shattered across time was. Seemed he just cynically wanted a hellish end to our beloved hero, possibly to reflect the experiences he had while playing the game.
Came here because a Dark Souls page compared Ecco to the Dark Souls. Safe to say, Ecco has one of the most difficult gameplay.

Dark Shoals
Dark Souls is a mere pale imitation of Ecco the Dolphin!

I can definitely see the reason why
you are honestly one of the most underrated youtuber. I found you from that draw to life video and this 51 minute video is going to make my day
The new drawn to life game sucks
Ha I started watching him from the anime about the creepy boys and rating them
Masochists, THIS is the game for you
As An Masochist i still find this game obnoxious
I’ve come to realize that all my favorite childhood games were on the difficult side. It explains a lot.
That and the original Super Mario Bros. 2(aka Lost Levels).
You actually had to be somewhat skilled with games back then
So what’s a good game for narcissists
The designers of Souls games at From Software took game design lessons from Ecco.
You can usually see attacks coming at you in Souls games
@@RavenGamingOverLord Indeed. They did make things significantly easier compared to the Ecco games.
Me as a kid: I Love this game! It’s a cute dolphin! (I never saw the creepy parts because I never finished the game...)
Me now: oh...alrighty ._.
The creepy parts are the parts that made me fall in love with the game as a kid
I like to think that the atmosphere of the game plays on people's fears and unknowns of the deep sea.
Today I beat Ecco 1 for the second time on my Genesis, no cheats. Last time I beat it was 18 years ago and I told myself I'd never beat it again, once was enough. But I just couldn't stay away. Maybe in another 18 years I'll be it for the 3rd time. First Genesis game I ever owned. It amazed and scared me back then, and it still does today.
It’s a fantastic game! Have you played the Sega CD port? It has a much higher quality soundtrack with different songs, really really good play the game runs smoother. Once you unlock the damaging sonar upgrade the game gets a bit easier, but I love Ecco I hope he gets a comeback
I never played the Sega CD port but the music alone would make it worthwhile.@@pQuiPq
why is the story actually kinda cool
Time travel and aliens are automatically pretty rad
Because it's Ecco.
So I take it from the Ecco fanfic that you were not a fan of Ecco the Dolphin
Actually a well constructed video on a game that I forgot haunted my childhood and probably gave me thalassaphobia
Glad I could bring back those accursed memories for you! c;
"The tube" is the hardest level. I needed a special controller that provided "slow motion" aka pause then unpause rapidly to finish it, I only did it once. Just type "NNNNNNNN" as the password to go to "Welcome to the machine". Also words of dread " Ice Spiders".
We also had the controller with slow motion... I wonder if that's why we bought it lol
I've never laughed at this game before in my life. Playing it on Game Gear as a kid, it heated up my hands and the screen gave me headaches. So that added an extra layer of discomfort to the already difficult journey that is ECCO.
That being said, this game is one of the most unfair, difficult, stress-inducing experiences ever.
Had this game as a kid and am now replaying it in my 30s. I could never beat it with out cheats. Over 20 years later and I will finally have my revenge!
It's possible without cheats but not without emulator saving lol
It's criminal how underappreciated your channel is.
I just beat this game for the first time. Thanks to save states and and an invincibility cheat. I don't think that I made it out of the 1st level back in the 90s. I feel like I just solved a little bit of my childhood trauma.
Doesn’t count
valid
this game got me and my father in so much diskussion when i whas 5 Years Old. We were so in too it because it was so terrifying.
It's a new year's miracle, you're back!
It is, indeed, a true miracle!
Wow. This video was soooo entertaning! And it lasted for a whole 50 minutes!! Thanks man, really made my day :)
I’m glad you enjoyed it!! c:
My six year old loves ecco and because of him I have been playing it again. As a kid I got stuck at the Atlantis levels but now I am stuck at welcome to the machine. And my six year old says if you don't like ecco you are a jabroni
I am okay with the fate of being a “jabroni.” Though I do wonder where they picked up that term, at such a young age LOL
@@DoujinShinji He definitely learned that from me, and by the way, this video is awesome, and it was my six year old who showed it to me.
@@DoujinShinji what in the hell is a jabroni?
Yooooo, I love ur channel. I have rarely seen such hard work go into videos. You know u did a good job when the viewer sees 51min and goes "damn that's All:("
Ey man, nice to see you again.
Happy new year and take care, this really made my day.
I think the toxic clams can be identified on the sonar screen. They show as enemies.
I used to play tides of time in the early 90s the giant creepy jellyfish freaked me out. The game had this weird lovecraftian deep ones thing going on.
let’s go - casiopea in the background in the first 6 minutes, nice one
i knew it sounded so familiar
Oh heck yeah ecco the dolphin video essay
What happens to the Vortex Queen and Ecco: the Vortex become the anthropods of Earth's past and integrate with the native ecosystem. They now have a home on Earth and they don't need to do their planet-devouring shit any more. Ecco sees that they're no longer a threat, so he happily calls it quits and flaps off to some other adventure. That's the canonical ending in Tides.
8:53 Nah man those are evil carrots.
This is a phenomenal video. I'd know, I've watched it 5 times.
This is such an amazing job, dude... you're brilliant.
That’s very kind of you to say, thank you!
I had a cheat code for this when I was 7 back in '93. I had this for christmas (yeah I know it came out in '92 but we were poor) and holy sh** man, that last boss, and those levels, gave me nightmares. Took me to my mid 20's when I played this on a PS2 Mega Drive compilation (with save states) to be brave enough to revisit and finally beat it.
extremely well made video.. the pace, edits, BMG/ambience & narration is right w/ the best I've seen!
Was totally astounded when I saw your subcount since I'd rate yours > some channels w/ 500k+ subs! You come across quite original & not one to sellout but just an advice which I'm sure you're already aware of - do exactly what you did here but w/ some newer releases & I'm certain you'll crack 100ks in no time! Good Luck!
I love all the "Ecco The Dolphin" Games!
I love that you used the 3D cutscenes towards the end; I used to watch those all the time as a kid!!
They’re pretty cool to look back on! The compression on them also helps with ~the aesthetic~
Awesome video! I only briefly played ecco the dolphin when younger and never knew it was this strange. Also, nice music in the beginning in the video, casiopea’s smooth jams is a masterpiece.
Bought back a lot of memories being in the back of the family car playing this on a Nomad. Don’t think I ever got past the ice level.
I played this game like 10 years ago and it came to me recently like a fucking fever dream. You, my good dude, are someone I’d wanna share a blunt with.
Me: just wanting to watch Ecco the dolphin playthrough cause that was my childhood
This guy: theological discussion time
Me: oh
Thank you for coming to my ‘spiritual view versus western view’ talk. Hope you maybe got something out of the analysis, too LOL
The second dolphin you meet in the sandbox level, (where you jump in the air and the storm comes), tells you "Sing to the shelled ones, and they will heal your wounds." I guess for some people this was halfway through the game.
YOOOOOOO!!! glad to see a new vid from you!
This was a great analysis of the Ecco series! I love the games because of their ability to express the unknown beauty of the ocean. I also loved your interpretation of the ending!
But don’t forget about Ecco: Defender of the Future for the Dreamcast! While I’m still only halfway through the game, there might be some more story in there!
Sadly it’s a full reboot, there was a canceled sequel to it though! Recently a ton of levels and design concepts for it have leaked, I think it was called Sentinels of the Universe
Just watching the gameplay footage in the background made me angry, holy shit. What in the world made you play and finish BOTH of these games?
I can promise you I wouldn’t have beaten both of these games if it wasn’t for the purpose of making this video LOL
@@DoujinShinji I will forever be grateful for your selfless sacrifice, really enjoyed the video :)
I missed you again, DoujinShinji. I sometimes leave your videos playing in the background just so you could get more views.
I appreciate the support! Hopefully I’ll be uploading more than twice in this new year.
It’s 3 am.. and I told myself I wouldn’t watch this. But also told my self “just a couple more minutes”. And now all of a sudden the videos over. How could this happen.
Ayyyy, cool that I was able to hook you!!
Maybe go get some sleep now, tho c;
Always love to see your videos, and an hour long video about a Sega genesis dolphin made my day
Ahh yes, who can forget the _nonorghnonorniornonorghs_ ?
Love your videos, glad you're back.
It looks like zooming out the perspective would've helped this game a lot.
It would’ve. That’s one of my issues with Sonic, too.
10:17 I can't believe I imagined the shark saying "pingas"
Off-topic, but I really enjoyed your analysis of Octopath Traveler video. It was well edited and mirrored my thoughts of the game exactly!
Did you ever imagine a crossover between "SOMA" and this game ? Just me ?
Never beat one of the games, so i was glad to see how the rest of the game would look like.
Excellent video btw
I’m glad you liked the video and that I could take you on a journey through the games, even without you playing them!
Happy new year champ, thanks for the present
I would activate the clams but not consume the first bubble, if the bubble is red, then to breath it is to be dead.
This was WAAAAAAY more entertaining than I thought it would be. God Bless You sir!
Come to think of it, I didn’t realize older video games like these, didn’t necessarily have the following invented yet:
1. Extra lives
2. Health restoration
3. Boosters or power-ups in general
4. Checkpoints and every gamer's favorite (so I presume) including mine...
5. CHEAT CODES! 😂
The Big FIn Squid is so fucking creepy, until you learn they can grow up to 6 meters but are mostly the tentacles so not that big
jesus this is so good. im not going to timestamp quotes or anything like that but this entire thing should be on netflix or something. as a horror film.
The clue on the rhythm crystals of “Do it”
Okay I know there’s that classic supposedly quoted line by Freud of sometimes a cigar is just a cigar and I may be seeing dirty things were I shouldn’t but. You are making the crystal move back and forth in a rhythm. That’s sort of like a sexual rhythm.
Maybe do it well means just that. It’s a literal hint of make the crystal go in and out and in and out?
I know I could be reaching but seriously you come up with any other meaning of “do it” that could even count as a hint.
17:14 "You have to satisfy these crystals' needs"
I think you… nailed it.
I played these games as a 14 year old and loved them. Some of your gripes are just you not paying attention to things. Video game instincts for me says if something is a different color from the first time I encountered it means it doesn't do the same thing. Blue bubbles good, red bubbles bad. Little pink sea stars good, big brown sea stars likely not good. The second game had literally 41 levels, huge for a game of its time. I can remember sitting up with a friend of mine and playing it all night. Yes the enemy placement was rough but if you were playing the game I guess you just new to expect it. The Dark Souls crowd would just say get good I'm pretty sure lol
18:26 Him: *"ARE YOU REALLY ECCO the DOLPHIN?"*
Me: *"I DON'T EVEN KNOW ANYMORE!!!"* 😔
Echo I & II are the Sega Genesis’s best survival horror games and it’s true
You know the video is going to be good when it starts with Casiopea, I love their music!
This game gives me a very specific feeling I can't really put into words. It's comfortable yet empty, weird :p Lovely video! have my like
One more question (sorry to bother)
I know this has nothing to do with the actual game but your Theorie / fanfic of what happens after the second game,
From what I understood Ecco gets lost in time space and is stuck there forever up to the point where everything gets distorted (loosing thoughts feelings etc.) but what about the future Ecco that wants the fish from you
Where does he come from then ?
I never considered that aspect of the lore, so you can see that as a ‘plot hole’ in my Fanfiction. But that’s okay, the fanfic was just for funsies anyways, haha. Thanks for the questions, tho c:
Ironic you say worms as I think one of those enemies may be a "Bobbit worm" and they're terrifying.
Also turns out the US version of Echo is actually more difficult- if you got eaten by the queen you'd be sent to a level called "stomach".
Bobbit worms are nearly as terrifying as the story behind their name.
I say that, until I now have learned bobbit worms can be up to ten feet long. Christ.
@@DoujinShinji Sometimes curiosity is a strange thing. Leading to interest and unnerving information.
Yeah, I remember the stomach level from the second Ecco game, where you get transformed into an alien. Got really annoying, until I looked up a cheesy way to beat the Vortex queen online LOL
I've played this for countless hours and never made it far. Still loved the whole atmosphere and feeling so much, I still consider it one of my most favorite games and being a game dev by now I can tell you I've played tons of games. Back then I thought I'm just a very bad player, but I can somehow find peace now, knowing I wasn't the only one.
how does this video only have 3,000 views?!!
I totally agree about the anxiety. Ecco Jr was the only one I could really enjoy thoroughly.
I’ve played through Ecco Jr. a few times. Pretty chill and laid back 25 minutes of a game. Complete opposite of the other games, haha.
Idk why but the puzzle solving where you follow something dropping reminded me of how dolphins will grab pieces of coral and watch them drop to the floor - like a game. I guess dolphins gotta have something to do after harassing a puffer fish to get high off of it.
I know this is like 2.5 years old, but this is my childhood right here a lot. Geez, the mere number of times my brother and I had to restart levels and go through each creepy section of the game because it was so unforgiving too. I wish a creepypasta would be made about this game, I just don't think I can do that myself is the issue.
why is this channel so underrated?
Thank you so much for this. Your videos are clean water in a maelstrom of mud.
Glad you’re still enjoyin’ my stuffs, thanks for watchin’!
I feel like this game would a lot more fun in your second playthrough, or when you are familiar with it.
The trilobites and most similar enemies can be easily dealt with by using the sonar powerup. You'd have a lot less difficulty if you were using that rather than the standard charge.
The giant spider crabs are just plain annoying though, it is true.
i rarely watch video this long but when a video is good
Bloodborne doesn't get your blood boiled? Elden Ring feels like its for Elders? Doom Eternal not so Eternal? Let me introduce Ecco the Dolphin.
I wonder what you think about "Ecco: Defender Of The Future." It is the 3D one for Dreamcast, and later for PS2.
I’ve seen bits and parts of the game. I didn’t want to focus on it in this video because that game is part of a different timeline, but I also don’t have any experience with it either, atm. I know there’s blood tho, and that’s crazy LOL
And I think, like, there’s different factions of sharks, or something, and they wear different armors? Something out-there and hilarious like that.
@@DoujinShinji The game is really great! The most difficult one in my opinion. You can look up those videos on my UA-cam Channel if you want

Happy new year shinji
Happy new year!
I think ECCO ends up becoming the dna creature, and the vortex queen ends up becoming something else (or maybe the other way around)
😯 Dang I like this editing! Comparing all the full maps really illustrates how convoluted the Ecco 1 stages tended to be..! I have fond memories for these games but you truly capture the exasperation of the old school horseshit design philosophy. I'd really love to see a "remastered" release with widescreen, updated graphics and fairness balance. At the very least, the Sega Cd version goes introduce save points to all levels, including the Machine...
50:22 wow Cassandra really fucking hated this dolphin for some reason
I was reading goofy conspiracy theories that somehow lead me to this video. So happy I spent my morning like this
You know something about those aliens showing up and taking you to the dark future remind me of the part in dark souls when the 2 gargoyles that pick you up and carry you from sens fortress to anor londo.
So many memories 🥺, I still have ptsd from this game
echo is a master at portraying the dangers of the ocean and i love it
edit: and hate it
One of the enemy types he showed was Highly Dubious indeed! 🧐🔎 - 🤔 - 😳 - 💀
The basket star looks like the pharaohs serpent, a really cool chemical reaction using mercury and something else, NileRed did a few videos about it.
Will you ever talk about Ecco The Dolphin: Defender of The Future?
That was my first Ecco game on the PS2, and really want to hear your thoughts on it.
Good vid, btw.
I can’t say I plan on it. I haven’t played it myself, so I can’t say for 100% sure I wouldn’t have a fun spin to write about it with, but I do wonder how much more I could say about Ecco after this extensive look on the originals. But I certainly appreciate your interest!
I seriously thought that the fanfic was gonna end with Ecco becoming either the Vortex Queen or the Asterite 🤣
ah yes the first dark souls ive ever played, i couldnt get past a handful of levels and it used to scare the shit outta me anyway
I really hate the ocean, not only because of sharks and squids, but because of these games
Just an FYI, the air-giving bubbles are blue, and the ones that hurt you are brown, so there is a visual distinction between the two. *Slides back out of room
what a great way to end off the year
