"We're dead, you stupid slag!"
Best line in the movie.
You sir, are spot on! :D
'Slag' is my favourite English insult. I don't get to use it nearly as often as I'd like.
It was weird that the decided to make in PG-13 by toning down the violence but then have a running gag of OCP employees committing suicide.
Isn't it a 15?
Wrong choice to make a PG-13
Alien vs. Predator suffered the same stupid problem.

This movie should have never happened.
They put things like the jet pack to sell toys to kids and an annoying kid character , but then have a joke about people committing suicide.
This review was ten times better than the movie itself. And a lot more entertaining. I have actually met Fred Dekker in person and I asked him if his vision was at all harmed by the PG-13 rating or the low budget and he humbly said no. He even said to me personally that he takes most of the blame for it's failings. He's a really nice guy. I was so happy to meet him in person at a screening of The Monster Squad in Portland. OR.
He even complimented me on my OCP hat. Good times. Much better times than the most recent time I had watching this movie that's for sure. Which is funny because I used to love this movie as a kid. In fact it is the film that got me hooked on RoboCop. I wasn't allowed to watch the first film or the sequel until years later when my parents thought I was old enough. So this was my first introduction to RoboCop. And I fell in love with the character ever since. I will always save a small place in my heart for this awful movie for doing so. But it's still a terrible film.
And it's funny you said you wanted that RoboCop 3 toy...Because I actually got that toy when I was a kid and it's one of the few childhood toys I still have and it's proudly displayed on my DVD shelf. It's voice box still works and everything. It's honestly a really cool action figure. His eyes light up and everything.
This comment is kinda wholesome ngl
I have the toy too....sonewhere
Underrated comment
Never understood the hate for this film.
It wasn't THAT bad. It wasn't what it should have been either but it wasn't terrible. A Robocop movie should never be Rated PG-13 tho. Also Peter Weller should have continued playing the character. The story could have been better but I've seen worse movies.
The jet pack scene was epic
Even thought the third one did sucked, this entire series will always hold a extremely special place in my heart. I’m 32 years old and still buying 100 dollar robocop action figures for Christ sake.
One of the lessons I wish producers would learn from Robocop 3 (as well as several other film franchises that were more adult oriented originally but found they also had gained popularity amongst kids) is that the appeal of the film to kids lies in the percieved "adult" nature of the movie.
I remember as a young kid in the 90's watching Robocops 1 and 2 on video and loving them to death, but then being massively disappointed with Robocop 3, in a large part because it felt like it was made "for kids".
Kids HATE being kids, and generally hate the idea of things marketed toward them (unless the intentions are well hidden). They want stuff meant for teenagers or even adults more often than not once they hit about the age of nine or ten. So toning down the violence of a film in order to "appeal to kids" does absolutely nothing to actually get kids in the theatre. Because especially if the reputation of the movie is violent or adult, it's likely that their parent wouldn't let them see even a toned down sequel (I know my mom threw a fit about me watching Robocop movies because she hated the violence in them), and if the kids actually end up seeing it, they get disappointed and spread negative word of mouth to other kids.
This is why the whole "toning down for PG-13" rarely works (or at least one of numerous reasons).
Making a PG-13 film *initially* might work to get more butts in seats, but if you're taking something that was popular as hard R, it'd have to be monumentally excellent to work as a PG-13 picture. Because one of the things people expect of sequels is for the tone to match (or improve upon) the original, and the rating is a huge tone shifter, and very rarely for the better.
yes
Exactly.
amen
SonofaGlitch TL;DR
Dude, your words are true and powerful. Felt that same way as a kid.
The robocop theme song gives me chills every time
One of the funniest scenes is at the start when the guy tries to rob the diner only to find its full of Cops.
He shoulda just started shooting and yell "FUK ME, FUUK ME!!!!!"
The funniest bit I thought was the OCP guy comitting suicide by jumping out the window, then the next scene cuts to people on the ground and you see him falling in the background 😂😂
That was good. One of my favorite scenes in any movie. Too bad the rest of the movie didn't keep up with it.
unpopular opinion, I absolutely loved this movie as a kid. I experienced this movie first, and then 1, followed by 2 afterward. I think I have watched this movie well over 30 times.
So I guess in the end, it worked for me. I was a kid, I could watch this, I liked it.
Just like the terminator u can’t take these series serious after part 2.
This movie is a big stinking pile of doo doo
Same with Predator.
And Alien.
Once Peter Weller dropped out I was done.
@@ThePathStrider it's funny, but so true.
Robert Currie Predators was good. The 4th film The Predator is pure trash.
I think the movie had a big problem with piracy as well, I saw a VHS copy from a car boot sale a good year before it came out in cinemas and I even remember news on the big breakfast saying that Robocop 4 had been pirated and it hasn't even finished filming yet. I assume Robocop 4 was actually that Canadian thing they did afterwards.
It wouldn't surprise me Larry. I remember reading articles about people copying NTSC Laserdiscs because often it would arrive on the old videophile format before VHS in the UK.
Oliver Harper
Oh yeah, I had a pirate VHS copy of George of the Jungle that was ripped from a laserdisc and that was ages before it came out at the cinema too.
That was also the first time I ever saw a menu screen (this was pre-DVD too) so I can remember being puzzled as to what it was!
The TV movies you speak of came out in 2000.
Larry Bundy Jr I remember a friend telling me he had a copy of Robocop 4 on video. We watched it and it was actually the feature length pilot episode to the Robocop TV series.
*****
Ah sweet, I thought as much.
I'll never understand how they spent 22 million dollars on this film -- When Robocop spends about a third of the film lying down or sitting.
No mention of the pimp car?
„RoboCop looked never like the star of his own movie!“
You nailed it again Mr. Harper! R3 felt slow and strange from the beginning. 👍🏻
I didn't like that they killed off Lewis
I'm really getting fed up of idiot arrogant actors demanding their characters are killed off, THEY'RE NOT THE WRITERS OR THE AUDIENCE!!!
Killing off Lewis was a kick in the teeth to the fans and just plain wrong!
that's why Obi Wan Kenobi was killed off in Star Wars
The problem isn't that they killed her off, but that her death isn't made more important. I didn't know they were thinking about making her into a second Robocop. That might have worked better than the flying scene, having Robocop show up with a partner instead of with wings.
Harrison Ford was the same with the Han Solo character. He couldn't care less about the fans and just wanted the character killed off while he picked up a big fat paycheck.
They killed her off cos they wanted to stay warm
I always thought that Robocop 3 felt like a made for tv movie. I mean all the violence was gone & so was all the grit. The look of this film is just too polished for me, it looks cheap if you know what I mean?
The enemies are just as bland as the story, you don't feel threatened by them in any way.
It's almost like a spoof of the original movie but with added Ninjas & a jet pack lol. Just feels really out of place. I mean Robocop 2 was flawed but at least it still felt like the same franchise.
I also remember the huge delay waiting to watch it in the UK, I honestly thought back then as a kid the film has been canned cos I remember reading things about it in magazines then nothing happened, then a year later it resurfaced again & the advertisement for it was little to none that I remember lol.
I would LOVE a game developer to make an original Robocop game for the PS4/Xbox
This, and TMNT 3, just snuck up on me in the early 90s. I didn't know they were out until I went to Blockbuster.
I remember that feeling. A sequel to your favorite movie randomly spawns at blockbuster. I'll be honest more bad movies than good.
Robocop suffered the same fate as the Frankenstein Monster. Writers/directors often run out of ideas for robotic-type creations/characters and they start spending more and more time lying on their backs waiting for someone to repair them. What kept the Universal Frankenstein films going was adding other monsters, like the Wolf Man and Dracula, to the mix.
11.43 Did anyone notice the japanese androids face after it is smashed by the Ironpipe, looks alot like Chung Li's grin in Bloodsport after beating Ray Jackson
😂
Say all you want about this movie, but my 11 year old self had a blast watching Robocop 3 when it first came out. Was cheering like crazy during the last battle between the Police vs Johnny Rehab
Given the recent state of Detroit the Robocop films almost seem somewhat prophetic. I find it especially ironic that they finally finished putting up a big Robocop statue just before it all began to go wrong for them.
Raphael Perry Detroit was dilapidated and desolate when these movies were made. But the city going bankrupt plot element came true.
While it did start with Reagan, the city has gone down to the depths because of inept Democrats who have big promises but purposely continue ruining cities so they can continue to pretend to be the only ones who care and who can fix the problem
Robocop 3 "I wouldn't buy that for a dollar!"
Great video chum.
Big improvement on the voice over. It's more natrual and conversational. I rented this when I was 15/16 and I'll admit to also geeking out when Robocop jet packed like a aluminium superman
Nice review Oliver, I watched this movie as a kid and thought it was alright, but now oh dear gosh.
yeah as a kid I didn't mind it that much but as soon as you get older that fondness for it drops sharply.
If you think about it, the story of this trilogy actually had great progression from one movie to the next. Starting from the concept of Delta City to the eventual destruction of old Detroit to begin construction of the city. The problem was with the second and third movies not being at all consistent with the tone of the first(the second being close though). I also found it interesting that Dr Lazarus was supposed to be the female doctor who was with Bob Morton in the first movie that helped with Robocop's development. I actually think the third movie could have been as good or even better than the second one if the tone stayed more true to the first and got rid of all the childish elements
Despite all this movie shortcoming I still think it has some of the best moments in the trilogy
Great work Oliver, and sums up many of my feelings on the film really well.
The complaints about Robocop finding himself on his back most of the time, is the criticism which stings the most. He's the hero, let him be heroic please.
Another great retrospective, Mr. Harper!
I have to admit that despite how poor of a film RoboCop 3 was, I loved it as a little 6-year-old kid and had a lot of the toys, so I have a bit of nostalgia for this movie when I watch it now. And Rip Torn. I could watch Rip Torn in anything.
Monster Squad despite being silly, is in my opinion so perfectly paced and acted that I'm surprised the same director dropped the ball so severely on this one. One thing that both films have in common I feel is that they fail to target the right audience. This is genius for Monster Squad with it's violence and adult gags but a poor show for Robocop 3, which comes across as immature to say the least.
Night Of The Creeps is also a decent film. Your spot on about the marketing of both films, but i suspect the studios F-d with Robocop 3...........Still i LOVE the Monster Squad.,......Wolf Man got nards!
Lantern Jaw I love Monster Squad.
i've loved Night of the Creeps ever since seeing it for the first time.
Great positives to this film:
1. The gun arm
2. The jet pack
3. The Rehabs
4. Louis death
5. The score
The bad parts:
EVERYTHING ELSE.
There is no RoboCop 3. What you just saw was the product of your or someone else's deranged imagination.
no that would imply it exists
There was a Robocop 3? I thought it was Murder She Wrote - Cyberman edition
@Mad Cyborg 2552 Reviews nope the worts was that disgusting remake please.not Murphy. Not the real suite and that idiot don't know yo act . .for me robó 3 ok not perfect not Weller but Burke done it pretty well and Eden un the series whit much respect...and keeping riginal soundtrack. But ir you prefer that Crap for me eat ir whit chips blin. And Butter😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣and better,,🤐 sick 🤕
Sounds like youre talking about the last jedi
I hate when with movies the sequel and peqrle they always pg and pg13 rated r in the first
I remember I really wanted to watch a RoboCop movie and the only one I could watch was this one because it was the only one on Netflix at the time. Definitely wasn't the one to start with. We all make mistakes...
Despite all it's flaws, I enjoyed watching this movie. It was fun. I would still take this one instead of that new one they just made!
actionfigures95 That reboot makes “Robocop 3” look like a masterpiece!
Good point. I agree
Same, I don't hate rewatching this movie at all. I've seen the reboot once, and will probably never rewatch it.
The jet pack scene is epic hero shit
Thanks for posting this great review.
I think they should never have hired Frank Miller. It's really his scripts that ruined the sequels. They have almost nothing to do with the first film.
mengutimur I don't know that I would agree with that, Miller's comics generally have a similar feel sans mass satire(it's still there, just subtle which didn't work). Read them if you can.
Robert Lee Gotta disagree with your disagreement; Miller has serious problems with tone and pacing, which isn't so obvious in most of his comics (shorter/episodic stories sidestep both issues) and considering how tight and balanced the first movie was he really was a bad pick to continue the series.
It made sense in context so I can't really blame the producers for the decision to bring him in, but the overlap between Miller's skillset and what's needed for RoboCop to work is totally superficial.
This. Miller is a hack, always has been. His dialogue and pacing are atrocious
Miller is the greatest comic writer who ever lived !
@@gstone8255 No way. A Garth Ennis RoboCop would have been something awesome.
Why why? That end montage hit me in the feels. Great job!
Love your retrospectives. Some of the best material on UA-cam.
I didn't mind Robocop 3. I actually liked it. The only thing that soured my enjoyment of the movie was the fact that Peter Weller didn't play Murphy/Robocop. After watching 1 and 2, Weller was the only one that who could have played - he was the character; it just wasn't the same without Weller. Overall, I thought all 3 Robocops together made a very good trilogy.
He got other offers, including lots of television and film projects. He'd earned his only Oscar
nomination for live action, short film, "Partners" in 1994.
Superb review. I only just saw RoboCop 2 this past week, which was okay, but have yet to see RoboCop 3. I'll certainly give it a chance if it pops up on cable sometime soon. Also, I'm glad you found the Radiodrome interview with Fred Dekker to be informative. I noticed a few things worked their way into the video.
These are done so well, thanks.
Good review...! I like the sprinkling of Basil Poledouris' music throughout.:)
I think the first time I saw John Castle was in a classic episode of 'The Prisoner' called "The General."
Too, when I saw this film I thought it was pretty sad that we see the wires on Robo when he is using the jetpack during the scene when he picks up Dr. Lazarus and Miko from OCP.
Great review, and a very even-handed assessment! I was at a screening of 'Night of the Creeps' a few years ago and Fred Dekker gave a Q&A. He seemed like a very sharp and cool guy. His previous films were so much fun, and not afraid to shy away from splattery gore - so it's a shame RC3 turned out so be such a dud and killed his directing career. At the Q&A nobody mentioned or asked about Robo-Cop 3, which I thought was very polite. Although I wanted to know about his memories of the project, it was a relief that nobody brought it up!
I have a soft spot for this film since I watched this when I was five, and watched the others later on when I got older.
Dammit Ollie! That second trailer you made made the movie look like it would kick ass!
You make it sound worth watching
The Evil Galactic Rehabs get destroyed by rebels and the Death Star OCP tower blows up in the end. Such an overwrought, heartwarming, audience-pleasing, unrealistic, cliched ending when the others were about deeper themes. I'll just leave it at that.
OCP meeting it's fall is the best part. Well that and Paul Mcdaggett's demise is cool too.
"RoboSlob" That sums this up quite well Ollie! XD
RoboCop without Peter Weller is not RoboCop.
Personally I feel they should do an animated series again. I know it's been done before, but it could save the franchise. An animated series could reintroduce Alex Murphy in more creative way while retaining the satire and dark humor of the live action movies. You can put it on Netflix or something. You can get away with a lot if it's animated and you can have Peter Weller return to voice Robocop, that would be awesome.
I remember watching this movie when I was a kid. They had a late night showing of it on opening weekend. The first 100 to 200 people received a free hamburger from Jack In The Box. And they gave you the burger at the door the burger showed up late so the movie started late. Everybody took the little dried up hamburgers in the movie theater and it was the biggest food fight you would ever see. People who dressed the nicest got it the worse.
Just watched this one with my soon to be 11 year old son today. He really liked it, though he noted the voice sounding "soft" and the movements being slightly different. He also asked me in the second act if Niko was a boy. He said it's his second favorite, after Robocop. I didn't mind it at all. As an adult I just imagined it as a adaptation of a Frank Miller graphic novel.
The links between the toys companies and movie studios during the 90's can explain why some sequels of interesting films like the first "Robocop" or Tim Burton's "Batman" were so... childish... Remember in those days they even sold you action figures of characters that they don't appear in the movie. Is nearly a miracle that today they exist other companies (like Hot Toys or Mc Farlanne) that are producing action figures oriented for mature audiences and that allow some adult elements on their figures and that allow the directors to concentrate on films for that could be rated R.
Burton's Batman was considered too dark when it first came out. It's only in retrospect it's seems childish.
Remember before it, we had cheesy 60s Adam west Batman.
Great review! It's sad this movie was watered down purposely made for a PG-13 rating to bring in a younger audience (mental age is different for children) to just fill in the seats. It will be like making the "Lego Movie" sequel with a R rating by purposely adding gore, swearing, and violence in order to appeal to an older audience. The point is the studio was making a film (ex. sequel or reboot) which feels like it shouldn't belong and completely aimed at a curtain audience which it wasn't customly made for them in the first place.
a bad movie condensed to 20 min and analyzed for effects/music becomes an excellent movie, this reviewer is amazing.
love this channel.
Nice retrospective review, Chum
I do dig the RoboCop 3 NES intro theme.
I remembered very few parts of this movie, which is for the best.
Great review.
Them changing film enemies was always my biggest gripe about this film.We became so invested by jeering OCP that when they changed from OCP being the main baddies to that other corporation we as fans just collectively said "WTSF!!??".
The only good thing about this movie was Sgt Reed, Lewis and Johnstone were in it, Mcdaggett was a good bad guy aswell.
In retrospect i actually wasnt that bad a film heh
also the movie used the original Robocop theme scored by Basil poledouris which were missing in the previous Robocop 2. without that one theme Robocop sounds almost nothing to me.
You're forgetting Jill Hennessey, who played Dr Laserus, sooo hot she was, ohhh!
I loved this movie as a kid born in 1988 this movie was awesome. I need to see it again to see if it still holds up for me.
your reviews are great it has even impressed primus
Excellent review.I really like it.Continue the excellnet work. ;-)
trivia- my cousin Moira was married to Fred Dekker :o
another good one, Olly! I like how you find the good in the bad! Cheers
I loved Night of the Creeps and Monster Squad as a kid. Still do. But as a kid I watched them over and over again. Another great horror movie I was obsessed with as a kid was Monster in the Closet. If I’m remembering correctly that one was a Troma production.
I actually appreciate 3 as it does conclude the narrative set up in Robocop 1 . It’s just less gore and brighter colors ..some rehashing of things established in previous films but it was written by legendary comic writer Frank Miller so there is cohesion and genuine attempt to tell a good story .
ALL HAIL KING OLLIE!
love the vids keep'em coming
The guy who plays Milton in Office Space and Bill Dautrive in King Of The Hill is in this.
Stephen Root.
P Ferreira Yeah, that's him
Im in this movie! By accident, no less. Accidentally drove onto set, while they were shooting.
My father and I saw that movie in the theater. We were the only ones there.
What's most annoying about Robocop 3, in my eyes...is how Robocop so cleverly took out RoboCain and Ed 209, only to look so confused as to what to do with the ninjas.
But that film is just Robocop in name only.
Farewell Rip Torn, we'll all miss you. :(
hey oliver great review man it's sad that robocop series went down i love the original
film and i like what robocop 2 was despite being let down hope film studios learn their mistake
What an excellent review! Very on the point. It just sort of seemed to me that the writers from WCW wrestling were involved in this script as Murphy sells the entire movie, begging for sympathy, just like in wrestling, and then has his comeback at the end. But so true, Murphy or should I say, Robocop felt like a secondary character in his own movie and seemed far more robotic than human.
I saw each of these movies when they premiered, and this and and the remake left me scratching my head when I walked out.
I remember the doctor character from her role in Law & Order. She was great in her season working with Jack McCoy (Sam Waterston ).
That montage at the beginning made me want to watch it...then I remembered it was robocop 3...
I remember seeing this as a kid, I wen't completely bonkers when he starts flying. After the movie I kept imaging what kind of new upgrades he'd be getting next. My mom and big brother certainly hated it and told me how that when would grow up i'd understand. I certainly do now, I hope to never rematch this movie, the second one is fine but ooh man do I love the first one.
We keep overlooking the true hero of this franchise, the Ford Taurus.
as a superfan of all that is Robocop, i'd like to inform you that in the beginning of R3, after murphy was set on fire by the splatters, "the heat was so hot his skin and vocal cords burned", so they had to rebuild those parts, a kindof kayfabe explanation, meaning atleast they tried to explain why robo looks different.
This reminds me of an old videogame mag article on Orion's bankruptcy that had the best article title I've ever seen: Orion Are Cryin'
Robocop
on fire looks like
Christine with legs
Nice review, chum. You did the impossible and made me want to watch this movie again! Shame on you!
Basil Polidaris makes it cool.
I think how robo is rubbish against the Japanese robots is to show how antiquated his tech is and acknowledge how his human mind eventually outwitted the competition! I also believe that the third installment of the franchise more structured layers than your review gives credit for! Obviously it's the weakest chapter of the three but Murphy's moral structure remains intact throughout!
It's still better than 90 percent of the garbage that comes out today.
I had the toy. It was a foot tall and his leg opened up for his gun and u could switch the arm out for the gun arm. I think the little girl has the toy in this movie. Awesome toy. The detail of the toy was great. Wish I still had it.
Detroit ain’t that much different today.
I think the biggest problem with Robocop 3 is that there is no one to root for and absolutely nothing to care about.
Yeah, there's a Stephen Root to care about. Ha, ha!
people like continuity,in sequels an role reprisals, when Peter Weller decided not to reprise the role then they should have made it possible, thru production delays, pay negotiations, what ever it took to get Weller on board with the film,u cant do two sequels with the same actor then try for a trilogy with a different actor that never works that's a guaranteed failure
Robocop 3 and demolition man came out in theaters together....I saw demolition man because I was a kid and my sister took me to the movies..I wanted to see Robocop..but my older sister took us to see demolition man...boy..am I glad she did.
This was one of my first movie-disappointments. I remember being about six or seven and renting this when it was a new release. I had more-or-less seen the original and second movie (although heavily monitored by my parents who made me look away during the most gruesome moments), but even as a kid, I was turned off by the fact they made it so cartoonish and kid-friendly because it didn't feel right. I was mindful enough to know that RoboCop was a movie series where I was supposed to have to look away because it was too violent for me, where I couldn't repeat any of the "bad words" I heard, etc. But suddenly I was watching a movie that resembled the cartoons I watched every morning before school. It just didn't seem to be the same series even to me and it actually bothered me even as a young child.
I had been super-excited and even remember seeing TV-spots where Bart Simpson was talking about how awesome it was (it might have been part of a cross-promotion with Butterfinger BB's, although I could be mistaken), but then I saw the movie and I remember barely being able to pay attention and checking out almost completely early on when the little girl makes ED-209 say he'll be "as loyal as a puppy." Then being confused about much of the plot and the twists because they didn't work with the first two. And I even remember being confused by the bad effects when RoboCop is flying about when I had already seen better versions of the similar effects in older movies.
I did like the flying Robocop idea. That's pretty cool
John Burk sure has very good Superhero type mouth, perfect for the Robocop character or someone like Judge Dredd. 5:11
Can't say the same thing about in Karl Urban in Dredd...Great movie though.
While I have only been able to read the first half of the last stand comic, I must say it was amazingly done in my opinion. The story is much darker and a lot more badass than in this. I would like to continue further in it later on, but I must say it is a far better conclusion thus far than this movie.
I love how the bulletproof Robocop used Lewis as a humanshield.
