I'm with Mike Portnoy, "The Twin Peaks Universe" is just fantastic, the spellbound people in Denmark when it was on the television. People were discussing who could be the murderer and using the phrase "a damned good cup of coffee"

Fun Fact: Mike said that Twin Peaks was on ABC. So is General Hospital since 1963.
The reason I bring that up is there is a bar&grill on that show called Charlie’s Pub. On the blackboard behind the bar there are different drinks and food listed and if you have a 60” screen one can plainly see a drink offered called:
    THE ‘LELAND PALMER’.

Mulholland Drive is my favourite film of all time. Magically simple and complex at the same time. The only film I ever watched and then immediately rewound to the beginning to watch again. And like great works of art you can see it many times and appreciate it without necessarily feeling you have to understand it!

Love Love Love this episode, Pete and crew! I'm sure it's been suggested by a lot of other viewers, but I'd love to see a top 5 ranking of Terry Gilliam films! For whatever reason, I always think of Gilliam and Lynch in the same sentence, despite Gilliam's films having more black comedy moments. Thanks again for the great work - Monster's Den has crept into my favorite program on SOT (just nudging out Hudson Valley Squares). Thanks Pete and company!

The most "Lynchian " moment in "Elephant Man is the opening montage with the slow motion imagery.
Now the few minutes with Anne Bancroft's character meeting John Merrick ending with "You are Romeo" ---- "I am??" - Maybe the most magical few minutes of film-making EVER!

In many cases you would certainly be right about Pete knowing as much as his co pilots (band member Chronologies etc.), but in the case of Lynch I doubt he really has a lot of background knowledge, especially compared to guys like Dan and Mike who are hardcore fans through and through. If you didn‘t even watch Twin Peaks you are not that much of a Lynchhead. Of course I might be wrong but I don‘t get the mentioned impression at all from watching this episode.

I remember seeing Wild at Heart at the theatre with my cousin. I was rolling on the floor throughout the whole film...people in front of me kept turning their heads towards me with frowns...apparently not everyone found it as hilarious. The best moment was when the dog grabs the human hand in its mouth. Some people got up and left while I was laughing my ass off.

This has been my favorite video on SoT, and maybe on you tube. But I am a "Lynchininan" and to see so much passion over DL's work by this group is awesome. My fav of his films is Mulholland Drive.... as an aside, I saw it for the first time on 42street in NYC after a shift working at ground zero ant the WTC side after 9-11. It was a surreal experience, and I did not get the film either on the first viewing but I knew I had seen something extraordinary. It was not until a few more viewings and reading a couple of you tube videos that I pieced it together for myself.
The one thing I have felt about DL's films is also has quite an appreciation for "The Wizard of OZ", and the scene at Rita and Adam's engagement party reminded my of the the ending of The Wizard where all Dorothy's OZ characters were people she knew, where in Betty errr Dianne's case they were at the party (the cowboy, Coco, Bob Brinkers new comes) up etc. David leaves so much of the interpretation up to the viewer.
The rest of his work is great and I have them all , but MDrive for my on on my all time film favorite list! Thanks for 2 1/2 hours well spent, the only YT video that long I have ever sat through. Check out his other visual and music stuff, truly one of the greatest artists alive.

I'm with Mike on this - the whole Twin Peaks universe would be my no. 1. I was absolutely obsessed with the original series when it came out, saw Fire Walk With Me on the day of release etc. But it was 'The Return' which finally sealed the deal. I thought it dealt with expections/nostalgia absolutely perfectly, by blowing the whole thing apart. A few people (original fans) I knew really didn't like it, (and obviously it doesn't have the same almost cosily quirky atmosphere, and is much more superficially 'graphic'); but I think they were forgetting, as Mike pointed out - there were moments in the original that were as intense and terrifying as anything you can imagine. And the new series built on that, expanded on the folklore, was completely hilarious and genuinely some of the best filmed entertainment I've ever seen.
    Sorry about the extended narrative.
Anyway, the top 5 not inc Twin Peaks -

David Lynch loved Sheryl Lee so much that he wrote in the part of Maddie just to have her play someone alive.
And Bob (Frank Silva) was not planned to be a character. Frank was a set designer, but there's a shot early on where we catch an accidental glimpse of him in a mirror in the Palmer house. And "Bob" was born!

Great Stuff! I remember on TV- "Entertainment Tonight" was with Hopper when they announced 1986's Oscar Nominations.
So funny seeing the smile AND confusion on his face when they announced his name for his role in "Hoosiers".
Honestly as iconic as the role of Frank Booth is, its Hopper just doing vein-bulge manic Hopper. Dennis's acting IS more skillful in "Hoosiers"
Another funny Lynch TV memory: Again "Entertainment Tonight" showing a "Twin Peaks" watch party with the folks dressed as the characters.
One of them was "dressed" as Laura Palmer - on the couch in a body bag with her face peaking out of the zipper! LOL.
    Something meta "Lynchian" about that!

Mike are you aware of the fan-edited version of Fire Walk With Me that intersperses all the 90 minutes of "missing pieces" into the theatrical release? It's worth checking out. It definitely makes the already released masterpiece even more cohesive.

Yeah, he reminds me of Steve from the Monday Night Hudson Valley Squares. Nice guy, but there's no off switch and it can become a little tedious at times. I don't mean to be offensive, rude or mean, but when one guy constantly feels the need to educate everyone all the time on the history of everything related to the topic and then continues to interject more and more when other's are talking, it gets tough to watch after a while. I really wish he'd had more self-control and let others finish what they are saying, especially when it's their turn. You can even see Pete get visibly annoyed with how long these episodes get due to all the tangents, but Pete's too nice of a guy to say anything.

I’ll admit, I like Dan and his tangents… but I do notice him going a little overboard sometimes. And I think he notices too. Definitely on this episode.

I have to agree with all the comments here. Indeed, the diplomacy displayed by you fellas is exemplary. It's only because I have the greatest respect for Pete and my genuine enjoyment of his channel, that I've bitten my tongue in the past regarding Mr. Brown's, shall we say, long windedness. If that comes across as offensive, that's not my intention. It is possible to be knowledgeable and informative with an eye toward brevity.

Great episode. Lynch is a real genius. Contrary to the panel here, I especially value Inland Empire. Yes it's maybe too long, too far out (The Rabbit Scene, WTF) etc. but man, just re-watch this epic with at least 5 years in between and discover the many 'Lynch-ian' layers in this story. However, my favorite Lynch movie will always be Mulholland Drive. And, like Mike mentioned, what about ep.8 of Twin Peaks III : Got a Light ? Inside the detonation of an atomic bomb ?? The weirdest 50min or so ever caught on film. Cheers from The Netherlands !!

Regarding "Dune" - it is not a bad film. We all know that DeLarentis hijacked Lynch's vision of Dune. His original cut was 4 hours long - you can't cut that down to less than 2 hours & keep continuity & have it make sense.
Dune is one of my top 3 favorite books and I still like this movie as it has DL stamped all over it.

I haven’t watched any David Lynch yet 😢
…other than half of Inland Empire a few years ago; I was trying to stay awake but both of my friends were already asleep, it was about 2 AM, and I gave up when I realized I was only halfway through (and had no idea what the f**k was going on).
That being said, it was still a lot of fun to watch this. I’ve been trying to watch more classic movies lately and I will DEFINITELY dig into his catalog very soon! Thanks for the recommendations!

Love that you guys did an episode about David Lynch! I wish you wouldn't say so many spoilers, especially about Twin Peaks. I know it's old, and people should've seen it by now, but if you're trying to introduce his work to new fans, that isn't a great way to do it. That Jamie guy almost seems to take joy in it, so he can like show off how much he knows. Very annoying.

i thought the Elephant Man was a great film when it when came out. it's such a beautiful, heart-wrenching film. and i'm sorry/not sorry, but i also loved (and continue to love) Dune. that book is NOT easy to distill into a 2-hour endeavor, but Lynch gave it a great shot. i feel there is still a lot to love about that film. he was also considered to direct the Empire Strikes Back if i'm not mistaken, so even georgey boy saw something in him. i feel Lynch embraces mythology - both western (which are more linear) and eastern (which are so not). S1 Twin Peaks was a masterwork, S2 was less engaging, but still better than 99% o' tv back then; the Return definitely has great moments with one episode which is probably my all-time favorite tv episode ever...
