@Jason Thompson Actually I'm getting a little tired of Scorsese repeating himself. But I guess, that what fans want him to do. Everytime he did something different like Age of Innocence or Hugo, people shrugging their shoulders.
@Jason Thompson I applaud him too for stepping out of his comfort zone. I just wish he would do it more often. He is old enough, he doesn't need to please the fanbase. Regarding repetition: yes you pretty much nailed what I ment. I would also mention that I'm not the greatest fan of his constant use of voice over. It was the right choice for Goodfellas and Casino. Terrific episode! Here are my top 5 favorite Brian De Palma films: 1) Scarface (1982) 2) Phantom of the Paradise (1974) 3) Dressed to Kill (1980) 4) Carrie (1976) 5) Femme Fatale (2002)
One thing that I love about the Scarface chainsaw scene, is that you don't really see anything happening. You hear screams, and there's blood splatter, but it's your own imagination that fills in the horrible details. Great show, guys!
I totally agree. He played it perfectly. I have to say even though I expected it, I kind of thought someone would put Phantom on their list. It’s a full blown classic!

Well done, guys. That was awesome. I'm touched by your in-depth knowledge & appreciation of this supremely gifted and undervalued director. It made for compelling viewing. I was especially pleased to see "Carlito's Way" get some love. I was knocked out by De Palma's virtuosity in that film but the romantic sub-plot (bolstered by the often wistful voiceover) & Sean Penn's performance floored me as well. The scene where Pacino's watching Penelope Ann Miller at her dance class (holding a trashcan lid over his head to keep the rain off) and, especially, the end-sequence sound-tracked by "You are so beautiful" gets me every time. On a side note, you may be interested in checking out old clips of a show called "Strutter" from a few years back. In it the British comedian Paul Kaye played a character partly inspired by the one Penn played in this. It was a goofy and crude comedy sketch show but i thought he captured his look & mannerisms pretty well. I think i remember him saying he was going for a Dave Kleinfeld/Rodney Dangerfield combo at the time :)
Very hard to pick a top 5 Brian De Plasma. Here goes: 1. Blow Out 2. Phantom of the Paradise 3. Body Double 4. Carrie 5. Scarface Ps. One of the best triple bills of all time: Carlito's Way, The Nice Guys, Midnight Run. Word 🤟
For what it’s worth my top five would be 1. Blow Out 2. Body Double 3. Scarface 4. Phantom Of The Paradise 5. Carlito’s Way Scarface was originally developed by Sidney Lumet and De Palma was developing Prince of The City they swooped projects in the end .
Of course, I think his absolute masterpiece is Scarface. My other four picks are Carrie, The Untouchables, Blow Out, and Sisters. There's also a cool documentary with him from A24 - basically, just him sitting at his own kitchen table, literally discussing all of his films in chronological order - even including Bruce Springsteen's "Dancing in the Dark" video!
Excellent conversation!!! I absolutely love Brian De Palma, I haven't seen his films in a while, this makes me want to go back and watch all the greats like Body Double, Carrie, Dressed to Kill and more!
1. Carrie (By a large margin...Funny thing is when Dio sings softly I'm always reminded of Carrie's mom, similar cadence,. She has a Dont Talk To Strangers tone) 2. Carlito's Way 3. Dressed to Kill 4. Raising Cain 5. Body Double Honorable Mentions: Scarface, Casualties of War, Blow Out.
Great Show guys. My list.......Phantom, Carrie, Untouchables, Scarface and Blow Out.... Honorables ---- Body Double, Carlito, Snake Eyes, Dressed and Mission Impossible. In Phantom, George Lucas borrows/steals the Phantom's look and sound to create Darth Vadar.
I loved this episode. After hearing all of you talking about these movies, I wanted to start my own binge-watch of all of these movies. I have only seen a few of these films. And Jamie Laszio is off the charts in this one. Awesome.
My favourite is blow out. I saw this at the cinema in 1981 and i have loved it ever since. Also stars the beautiful nancy Allen, my boyhood crush i love nancy
Trying to catch up on some SoT shows and finally, a chance to watch this. Great show. Have really enjoyed Mike Portnoy's participation in various SoT shows while he is off the road. Will miss him when he returns to playing live. Props to Jamie Lazlo - pun intended - for his finale selection and action with Carrie. Epic! (The stuff of which legends are made.) The ending of Carrie scared the bejesus out of me in the theatre. Literally jumped out of my seat. Other favorites were discussed and I likely would put The Untouchables in the Number 2 spot. Great casting, great story, great filming. Just wanted to thanks everyone - with a particular spotlight "Why I'm Sitting Outside" Jamie - for making this an unforgettable show.
De Palma's undisputed masterpiece is obviously The Black Dahlia. Never before or since has he ever so successfully demonstrated his acute understanding of unintentional humor.
Awesomely epic show. As far as I'm concerned, it doesn't get any better than the New Hollywood era in the seventies, and De Palma is a big part of that. The eighties doesn't even come close. Thanks guys!
I would say my favorite Brian De Palma movies are Scarface ... "You Wanna F*** With Me? Okay. You Wanna Play Rough? Okay! Say Hello To My Little Friend!" ... Blowout ... Untouchables ... Malone: [to Ness as they assemble their team] If you're afraid of getting a rotten apple, don't go to the barrel. Get it off the tree. .... Carrie and Carlito’s Way ... ”Favor gonna kill you faster than a bullet.” - Al Pacino, Carlito’s Way.
I noticed I've only seen 9 of Brian De Palma's 30 films. So I have quite a few gaps in my knowledge - especially it seems Dressed To Kill, Body Double and Carlito's Way. But of the ones I have seen my favourites are: 1. Mission Impossible - by far the best MI film, a proper thriller not just an action film (as good as some of them are) 2. Mission To Mars - a much maligned film but I really like it, I love sci-fi and this is a good one (maybe not very Brian De Palmary though) 3. The Untouchables - just a great all round film 4. Blow Out - a really cool thriller 5. Carrie - haven't seen this in many years, from what I remember it was good, but maybe just a little bit overblown And yes I'd love to see a Scorsese episode and also a Kubrick one would be awesome.
Cheers for the 2 hours of chat. Great listen. Carrie is defo a classic that ending i was 10 when I sneaked into our local picture house, I screamed when the hand came out ? My mates all laughed at me. Good memories.
Phantom of the Paradise is actually Picture of Dorian Gray meets Faust meets Phantom of the Opera in a 70's music industry setting. Surprised you music heads wouldn't be all over that considering how great all the music by Paul Williams (who also plays Swan) is.

Shoot, I forgot Casualties Of War. Whoever said Sean Penn was a monster, is right. I can still remember him stabbing the girl they kidnap. God, that was hard to watch. It got panned by critics mainly because of Michael J. Fox. I agree that this move and Platoon were the better of the eighties genre of Vietnam War films.
Love the show...best one since the Godzilla eps...love that Body Double is getting the love it deserves, one of the best 'director shoving the finger at Hollywood establishment' films ever made, and the Hitchcock references are truly important in all his films as it makes one investigate Hitchcocks ouvre as well. I was surprised you guys didn’t mention the family connection between Hitchcock to De Palma via Melanie Griffith in Body Double and her Mother Tippi Hedren Marnie, The Birds. Also Sean Connery in Marnie and The Untouchables.
Casualties of War is an excellent film. I was in the US Army when this was released. The Sergeant's had us watch this once when they were reviewing soldier's ethics with us. I remember when the jerk captain in the movie lied right to Michael J. Fox's character's face and told him military courts were lenient and that the accused soldiers would never do any prison time. We all kind of snickered, because as anyone who has served in the military knows, military courts are way more strict compared to civilian courts. We all hated the Corporal character in the film who was such a bastard as well as Sean Penn's Sergeant character. A great film, but so heartbreaking to watch because of what happened to the poor girl.
Thanks for this video. Got some movies to watch. Have only seen Carrie. Might Try Body Double first. I like Craig Wasson in Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors. I also like Dennis Franz. Watch NYPD Blue on Hulu. Great to see Mike and Jamie. I smell another t-shirt coming. "Screw those people".

Jamie's 'Carrie' prop is the best thing I've ever seen on this channel, lol

Ya, I think Phantom is one of the most underrated films ever. Paul Williams was the essential to that film; great score, great acting! Love it!
His character is unforgettably sinister.
He was so damn CREEPY in that movie! Such an underrated actor.

Right, this was all worth it for the moment that Jamie Laszlo drenched himself in pig's blood for his number one pick 😂 All that build up 🤣
