I saw the Exorcist around the same age, and my experience was the opposite. I had read the book though so I went in well-armed. However, I let my kids see it when they were around that age (quite recently as they are now mid-teens and just old enough for me to introduce them to all the classics) and they found it laughable in places and not remotely scary. I've never understood how people found it scary. A great movie yes, but scare-free.

Totally agree with Pete's comment on post 2000's horror lame pics relying on jump scares there's a reason very very few make the grade as classics that we will be talking about in the future as landmarks.

What Bruce Campbell said in an interview was that someone else had the rights to the original footage. The beginning of part 2 was supposed to be a flashback but they had to reshoot up to where Ash gets picked up going through the trees. It's an actual sequel.

Evil Dead 2 was ground breaking at the time of its release. A totally off the rails insane flick unlike any other up to then: an everyman caught in a nightmare who then loses all sense of reality, his mind turned to cackling mush. Perfect. A meta horror movie about horror movies in a much smarter, visceral way than the later and highly overrated Scream.

The plot of Phantasm is summed up in the great tuning fork “gate” scene. They pull Mike out and he goes, “slaves….they’re using them as slaves! And they gotta crush ‘em cuz of the gravity….and the heat. And this is the doorway to their planet!”
Reggie then snaps his fingers and goes, “yeah!”

I've always enjoyed the Phantasm series. The first one is one of my top favorites. Second one was great. After that it was pretty uneven and they got really weird. And I love weird stuff. Ravager was a bit underwhelming for me though. But it still has its moments.

    • @TheIndependentLens
      @TheIndependentLens 3 роки тому +3

Ravager was a major disappointment. Everything from the crap computer generated spheres to the bad acting. However, 3 & 4 were almost as bad. 4 what I liked was seeing the unused footage from the original and liked how they worked it into the story. It wasn’t that good on a whole though. The only good ones are 1 & 2. 3rd one is lame. Suddenly there are zombies in Phantasm?

Good to see Reggie and the Tall Man, but the fact that other guys were gone and they kept increasing the amount of silver balls (as if that’s better) all really bothered me. Didn’t have the same spirit. It also seemed very Nightmare on Elm Street-ish. Part IV was kind of interesting b/c it incorporates deleted footage from the first film. The others are awful.

The 1943 Phantom - I agree Pete for the most part. The budget on that one was much higher than the other monster films of the time due to the Technicolor and music scenes, but yes, not in the same league as the other monster films. However, that film is a masterpiece compared to its quasi sequel, THE CLIMAX (1944). That was a bored Karloff trying to get out of his Universal contract. Yeah for Phantom, 1925 Chaney all the way.

  • @FireMoon42

Halloween III was written by Nigel Kneale a true genius, the man behind the Quatermass films and the classic "The Stone Tape". he had his name removed from the credits, which really didn't help at the box office, as they changed the focus of the film from the Stonehenge story to the clockwork robots. Halloween III would probably have been way more like "Quatermass and the Pit" had they stuck to the original script. The theory is, the American producers bottled it because of the overtly "pagan" overtones of the plot. I can't help think that, had they just left it to Carpenter and Kneale, it would have considered an absolute classic today. Kneale also wrote the Hammer Yeti movie script, it was adapted from his TV play called "The Creature". If you want to see something incredibly prophetic he wrote, his play "The year Of The Sex Olympics" pretty much could be about today's TV schedules. It was filmed in colour though sadly, only a black and white copy still exists. People spend all day docile in front of their TVs watching porn and this reality show about a bunch of people living on an Island. The producers of the show then decide to introduce a murderer to the Island.

There’s probably a term for it, but after dozens of views, most movies loose their luster. We become fans based on those initial experiences, and want to keep repeating them. We learn about how it’s made and what everyone’s insights about it are. After awhile, we’re looking at it differently and maybe the seams begin to show. It’s not so much a statement on the film’s quality, but our tiring of it. What’s the saying…familiarity breeds contempt?

Glad you guys like the TV show, though It's SO GOOD!! Pete, you've gotta check it out. It's hilarious but also much more viscious and relentless than all three of the films.

TCMII was heavily censored here in the UK and I don't think it even got a video release so I built it way up in my head - when I finally saw it I was really disappointed - I expected mega gore! Now I kinda like it for what it is a solid 3 stars from me.

I'm with you on the 1943 Phantom of the Opera Pete, Claude Rains remains one of my favorite actors but never cared for that adaptation. However the worst version is the one in 1998 directed by Dario Argento, it's god awful.

I love Stanley Kubrick, but when I saw Eyes Wide Shut for the first time about twenty years ago it went completely over my head. I am not a fan of Tom Cruise or Nicole Kidman either, and I found many of the long and slow dialogue sequences to be particularly tedious. As the years have gone by, I have revisited this film from time to time, and I've noticed that it has gotten better and better with each viewing, and now I suspect it to be one of Kubrick's masterpieces.

    • @knightvisioniixv

I love Kubrick as well, and Eyes Wide Shut is one of my top favorite films of his. It's funny looking back at the time of its initial release. So many people were confounded once they finished watching the film. In fact, a good portion outright hated it. I suspect the reason being that it was advertised as something that it wasn't; I think many expected it to be a hyper-sexual film, when it was more of a psychological exploration than anything. The combination of dialogue, cinematography, music and score leads to a beautifully enigmatic, thought-provoking, always-fascinating film. I've watched it dozens of times.

I used to skip Nightmare 2 but now I think it's honestly the second best of the series. I absolutely agree with you guys on Killer Klowns. It was sooooo built up to me how great it was but as a kid I couldn't believe it was SILLY. I was totally expecting something really scary. But many years later watching it with ZERO expectations and basically forgetting my original viewing I was like, "Oh man, this movie IS genius."
I remember HATING Idle Hands when it came out because at that age ( just out of High School) I thought everything had to be ART or whatever. But now it's the stoner classic to me it was always intended to be.
The other side of the coin is the Jeepers Creepers franchise because of it's director. And I actually enjoyed the second one better. Flatliners does not hold up but is still better than the crappy remake. And I'll echo the SAW movies not holding up past the 3rd one. Once Jigsaw DIES all the extra drama of the later sequels is just a gory Soap Opera.
CAN"T WAIT for the DePalma episode. My favorite movie of all time is Phantom of the Paradise.

The biggest "turn-around" I've had has not been so much with any straight-forward horror films, but with dark, violent, '70s and '80s crime/action films. In the '80s, I was all about horror, all the time, and I could not have cared less about "Death Wish" and similarly-themed films. Now, I love those movies! I still love horror too, but in some ways, to me now, the first and second "DW" movies *are* horror films!

In the late 60's/early 70's, I saw Reptilicus on a nosey black and white TV, and thought it was the best thing ever. In chelate 80's, I finally found a copy and saw it in full color in all its glory. Like the Ib Malchior science fiction movies, the plot is great, but once the monster grows up--it's laughable. As for Killer clowns--when it came out on VHS, I loved it while my wife sneered.

The original Phantasm is still great…I still love it to this day. Yeah, it’s a B grade movie and the plot is pretty ridiculous but the Tall Man is a great villain and the sphere was pretty creative. Some of the nightmare/dream sequences are pretty cool too. I did not care for the 2nd one that much. I was really excited when it came out but the Mike character replacement sucked (sorry James LeGros) and the story just didn’t have the charm of the original. I enjoyed Phantasm IV: Oblivion too. Phantasm III and Ravager were pretty meh though.

Donnie Darko. I remember being obsessed with that movie. Buying several different formats of it. Buying the soundtrack. Shirts. Posters. Etc.
But I haven't cared for it in ages. I guess it was just a stage of life I was in then. I thought it was so deep and mind blowing. Now (and for years) I just find it boring and silly.
Earlier than that I was obsessed with that Flash Gordon movie. But I was like 11 or 12 so I can blame being a silly kid with that one at least. Plus that was like a 2 year obsession unlike the 5 year plus Darko obsession. Though I will say I'd much rather watch Donnie Darko over Flash Gordon these days.
