Into the Depths Most Underrated Hard Rock & Metal Albums of the 1980s

- Devil’s Five/Double Vision/Gruesome Threesome Award-winning filmmaker Terry R. Wickham had a blast Sunday morning August 15th recording a special episode of his UA-cam Channel show Into the Depths with two special Guests, Hard Rock/Metal Expert Author/Journalist/Podcaster Martin Popoff and Pete Pardo.
Wickham says, “It’s not every day you get a chance to talk to two people with the authoritative knowledge we each have accumulated over a lifetime of listening to hard rock and heavy metal. It was a heck a lot of fun sharing each of our choices for the Top-10 Underrated Hard Rock Metal Albums from the 1980s and passionately explaining why we made each album choice.
What was so cool for me was I didn’t know beforehand what albums Martin or Pete were going to choose. This brought an exciting aspect of anticipation before each choice. Up until Sunday morning, I found it a real challenge to narrow down only the Top-10 Underrated hard rock/metal albums, because there is so many, I love from that incredibly bountiful music decade.
We also set the criteria to be albums that were not the obvious choices, which resulted in each of us focusing on bands that should have been huge that released one or two albums with the same band lineup before breaking up or fading into obscurity.
So, get ready to learn of some truly inspiring 1980s Hard Rock/Metal album choices everyone should seek out with gusto after watching the show. Wickham is aiming to have the show ready by Sunday August 22.

Talking about the end of this video, im 26 and ill say there is no joy like finding a music shop and buying cds and putting them on in the car or coming home after work to finding a bunch in the mailbox to throw on the stereo while relaxing for the evening, reading the booklets hell writing my own reviews and talking about it woth others. Theres just a true art to collecting albums and really letting them grow on you and ill never let that leave my life. Great video as always!
I’m also 26 and I agree 100%. Finding lost gems from decades ago is always super exciting, it’s amazing how many fantastic bands from the past 50+ years unfortunately fell through the cracks. Unfortunately the closest record store to me is more than 2 hours away so most of my music discovery is through the internet but it makes it all the more cool when I do get to go to a shop and hold the actual thing in my hands.
@@erikberg5363 i feel you! Its more special when i get to go I have a really cool one i go to every few months or so about an hour from me otherwise its online hunting!
I'm a little older at 32, but still same generation, and I'm right there with you--been collecting records and CDs since I was 5, have now amassed almost 2,000 CDs and records with no intention of slowing down. There's not a ton of us in this age group, but we're out there still.
Great viewing guys!
Here's 10 for you...
1. Strangeways - Native Sons '87
2. Kingdom Come - In Your Face '89
3. House of Lords - S/T '88
4. Badlands - S/T '89
5. FM - Tough it Out '89
6. Blue Murder - S/T '89
7. Bonham - Disregard of Timekeeping '89
8. Fiona - Beyond the Pale '86
9. Rio - Borderline '85
10. Jean Beauvoir - Drums along the Mohawk '86
👍
In regards to the ending conversation, I've actually explored 3 bands catalogues those being Kansas, Genesis, and Toto thanks to Pete's SoT channel so I appreciate you guys keeping the talk for great music going.
One f the most underrated albums for me was NIGHT OF THE CRIME by ICON.
Yep, a bloody masterpiece of an album.
Absolutely agreed
But the 1st album was the gem
@@rizzamran2775 I like it a lot too.
Totally!
This was one of the best shows ever on this Channel.
I agree, right up my alley it is😎

Autograph- Sign in Please
Saigon Kick
Malice- In The Beginning
Dream Theater- When Day and Dream Unite
Fastway
Babylon A.D.
Black Fate- Commander of Fate
W.A.S.P.- Inside the Electric Curcus
Yngwie Malmsteen’s- Odyssey
Black Sabbath- Headless Cross
Motörhead- Another Perfect Day/Orgasmatron/Rock ‘n’ Roll
Judas Priest- Point of Entry/Turbo/Ram It Down
Thin Lizzy- Renegade/Thunder and Lightning
Saxon- Rock the Nations/Destiny
Malice kicks ass. License To Kill is a hidden gem of 80s metal
I like your inclusion of underrated albums by known bands! Thin Lizzy is especially cool to see since they never get mentioned in Metal discussions, I guess probably because so many of their albums have such a variety of styles.
I agree with you on that W.A.S.P album.
The 2 Crimson Glory albums are MASTERPIECES!!!! Midnight was a fantastic singer....
Fifth Angel- S/T
Loved Pete’s Crimson Glory and Fate’s Warning picks. Tons of stuff to explore from Terry and Martin as usual. Thanks!
Hell yes, Fifth Angel!!!
No exit is my favorite fates album
I really appreciated the conversation at the end and how much you guys are aware of how lucky you were to have grown up in the 70’s and 80’s. I’m much younger than you gentlemen so I never got to enjoy the experience of true record shopping, but I try my best to be actively engaged with all music I listen to, especially new music. I think a lot of young people think of music listening as a passive activity, which is a real shame since active listening of full albums is the best way to have new music grow on you. I recently listened to King Crimson’s album Lizard and didn’t “get it.” But after doing some research and giving it repeated, careful listens I think it’s genius! I wish more people realized that a lot of music requires effort and repeated listens to fully appreciate!
I’m glad that you can appreciate the music of the past. I’m seeing more channels by younger people reviewing music from the 70’s and 80’s. When I was younger, I didn’t have that many records, so everyone was like a treasure to me, I would listen to them repeatedly. I could listen to music for hours and not get bored. I think nowadays people have less time to appreciate music. People are bombarded with so many choices, that they limited time to each choice. I find myself having less time to enjoy music and I’m 60 years old, i should have all the time in the world. Try to find that quiet time and remove all distraction and just be in the moment. i hope you find music that moves you and spend the time to see the beauty in every thing you do.
Pete. You & Martin should do a "Top 10 artists/bands from Canada." I feel that would be very interesting.
My list of fave Canadian Bands (not too many surprises):
Saga
April Wine
Rush
BTO
Guess Who
Triumph
Chilliwack
Honeymoon Suite
The New Pornographers

Mahogany Rush
The Tea Party

I wonder if Martin heard of Reckless self titled female vocals from Canada. Only did one album. Opened up with track victim of time. So under rated.
Picture-Diamond Dreamer
Meliah Rage-Kill To Survive
Omen-The Curse
Warlord-Deliver Us
Flotsam and Jetsam-Doomsday for the Deceiver
Glad to hear someone mentioning "Warlock" - a underrated genuine German metal band.
Doro=amazing female vocals. She really didn't even need to use a microphone...... yeah, stellar band with tight tunes that rocked the house!
Thank you so much for this episode!!! Out of the 50+ Sea Of Tranquility episodes I’ve watched… this one hit HOME!!! Pete, I was also that kid (born 1968) who went into the record store and purchased them based on the COVER!
More often than not, (thank the Metal Gods) I hit a home run!!
The fact that you all mentioned TOBRUK! Stone Fury!! Kick Axe!! ICON!! Great White’s first album (which I have on vinyl) and worn out!! This was so much fun!!! And I now have a list of five other bands I need to seek out!! God only hopes when I make my next FULL ALBUM purchases, the band actually sees some money!!! Thank you again for all your insight!!
Jag Panzer-Ample Destruction, Meliah Rage-Kill to Survive, Helstar-A Distant Thunder, Purgatory-Tied to the Tracks, Shok Paris-Steel and Starlight Rock In Peace Eric Wagner of Trouble/The Skull
What a great discussion. glad it popped up.
Greetings from across the pond in the good old UK. Oh. My. God. I haven't enjoyed a conversation this much in ages. I even went back to the beginning and made a note of all 3 of your top 10's and your Hon. mentions.... 36 in total (I think!!!) and only 3 names I didn't know - and 2 of those were Martins final 2 picks! The 3rd was Ashbury... Of the other 33, only 4 I don't have on either cd or vinyl, namely Overdrive, Toxic, Heathen and Highway Chile.
How great to sit there nodding away to nearly everything the three of you said, including your closing comments about the streaming revolution...
Best bit? Hearing Terry say that Icon are recording with Steven Clifford again. Once, I'd have thought that about as likely as Donald Trump becoming President or Brexit actually happening Or not... .
Weirdly, my top 10 (today!) doesn't include any of those 30+... 1. ICON Night of the Crime 2. LILLIAN AXE Lillian Axe 3. FIFTH ANGEL Fifth Angel 4. MOTHERS FINEST Iron Age 5. DEMON Night of the Demon 6. Q5 Steel the Light 7. RAVEN All For One 8. PHANTOM BLUE Phantom Blue 9. FORTNOX Fortnox 10. INTRINSIC Intrinsic...
Course, tomorrow, 80% would change! I mean... JAG-WIRE? RIFF RAFF? VICIOUS RUMORS? HEADPINS? Where would it end! Thanks again guys, and keep the faith!
Shy - Brave The Storm and Excess All Areas
Icon - S/T and Night Of The Crime
220 Volt - Eye To Eye
Super cool show 🤘🤘
There are so many great underground metal bands from the 80s, I know there are lots I haven’t listened to yet and I was glad to get some more recommendations!
Most of my list I would call “under-appreciated”. Not very well known but highly rated by those that know of them. I stuck to more traditional styles of metal (didn’t include thrash or more extreme styles).
My favourites:
Manilla Road - Open the Gates
Saint Vitus - Saint Vitus
Satan - Court in the Act
Metal Church - Metal Church
Cirith Ungol - King of the Dead
Loudness - Disillusion
Savatage - Sirens
Pagan Altar - Pagan Altar
Trouble - Psalm 9
Sortilège - Métamorphose
Witchfynde - Give ‘Em Hell
Witchfinder General - Friends of Hell
Holocaust - The Nightcomers
Brocas Helm - Black Death
…and I’ll toss in Legend - Fröm the Fjörds (I know it’s ‘79 but such a killer record!)
Metal Shop every Friday night in the 1980s. You would hear these bands. FM radio
Riot - Fire Down Under
Sword - Metalized
Exciter - Heavy Metal Maniac
Anvil - Forged in Fire
Piledriver - Metal Inquisition
Pentagram - Day of Reckoning
Znowhite - Act of God
Cant go wrong with Fire down under, also love Narita.
Still listen to Exciter! And all Hail the Exalted PILEDRIVER!!!
No doubt that you were there when it happened. :-)
This is so awesome. I guess I’m going to be buying some cds of bands I’ve never heard of. I love this. It’s just like when Eddie Trunk does this on his show. It’s always great to hear new (old) stuff.

I loved the final conversation, beautiful and meaningful.
Agree. A great listen.
TT Quick - Metal of Honor
Lion - Dangerous Attraction
King Kobra - Ready To Strike
Meliah Rage - Kill To Survive
Rough Cutt - Rough Cutt
TT Quck - Metal of Honor NICE!
Great show. Thanks guys!
Riot , Armored Saint, Fates Warning, Legs Diamond
Martin..Honeymoon Suite? Great underrated Canadian band. Melodic hardrock, great hooks, production and musicianship
They got plenty of radio play back in the day. I saw them a few times. Always solid.
Very enjoyable video. You three should do another one of these. Rail is a band I’ve never heard of. Some of their stuff is available for streaming on Spotify. Their album The Arrival is uploaded from vinyl. You know a band’s album is super obscure when you’re listening to a vinyl version of it on Spotify!
Meliah Rage - Solitary Solitude
Roxx Gang - Things You've Never Done Before
Vain - No Respect
Smashed Gladys - Social Intercourse
Dangerous Toys - Dangerous Toys
Nuclear Assault - Survive
King’s X - Gretchen Goes To Nebraska
Metal Church - Metal Church
Malice - License To Kill
Helstar - Remnants Of War
Fates Warning - No Exit
Flotsam & Jetsam - No Place For Disgrace
Killer Dwarfs - Tell Me Please
Armored Saint - Raising Fear
TNT - Knights Of The New Thunder
Triumph - Thunder Seven
Remnants of war is so good!!!!
This was one of the best videos I've seen and during it I was thinking what Terry stated at the end. I'm 51 and feel like the time for me for music going to the record store and not knowing what to buy or get and just looking at covers and basing my decision then. Also, this episode made me aware of bands I didn't know. Ashbury being one. Love discovering new music and just really enjoy this topic. SoT has many great videos and love Pete's enthusiasm with topics, and imo, Martin is top notch with his thoughts, comments, and choices, but a tremendous thank you for doing this and having Terry on was awesome. Great vid!

fantastic presentation. Awesome and evokes a lot of emotion of music which has been burried or forgotten but is awesome and worth exploring. (The intro was different and refreshing though I got confused that it's SoT or not 😂. ) . Thanks guys and esp to the new participant (Rick ?) For adding a fresh dimension to the discussion . 👍

Great video guys! A few I wanted to throw in :
"Psalm 9" "Trouble"
"Circus of Power" "Circus of Power"
"Clutch" "Clutch"
"Kill or Be Killed" "Blessed Death"
"Power And Pain" "Whiplash"
"Heavy Metal Maniac" " Exciter"
Great show. Witchfynde on Friday, Tobruk today. You’re really bringing up long lost memories! Anyway, here’s my top 10:
Babylon AD - S/T
Jimmy Barnes - Working Class Man
Drive, She Said - S/T
Giant - Last of the Runaways
Girl - Sheer Greed
Gun - Taking on the World
Steve Jones - Fire & Gasoline
Romeo’s Daughter - S/T.
Slade - Til Deaf do us Part
Uriah Heep - Abominog
Funny, not sure where you are, but here in Australia working class man is one of the biggest most popular albums of the 80’s. It’s still played on radio constantly
@@bostonvh Hi, I’m in the UK, where Jimmy Barnes is rarely known.
@@parishofrock2963 cool to know👍
The godamned KIX bands debut!!! 1981, All killer, no filler! Soooooo much better than Shitley Crue’s debut! Power Supply by Budgie is another criminally underrated album. Every cut is killer💥👊🏽
Love the Power Supply album, just recently discovered it.
Mötley Pöo also rolls off the tongue.
Heir Apparent - Graceful Inheritance (1986) comes to mind
I’ll add 5 NY based bands: Riot - Fire Down Under (as discussed on this channel), Hitttman (w/frequent Tranquility guest Jim Bacchi), Zebra - 3.V (many great hooks), Good Rats - Live At Last (raw yet diverse & catchy), BOC - Imaginos (their most prog metal effort).
YES!!! Good Rats!!! How about 805? * not exactly HARD rock but great all the same. OR Crack The Sky (Baltimore).
Fire of Unknown Origin is my number most underated classic! Every song is a banger!
My friends and I used to see Zebra play at "CYO dances," which were basically concerts in a catholic school gymnasium. Late 70's - early 80's. This was in the New Orleans area, where Zebra was from (they went back and forth between Louisiana/Gulf Coast and NY).
SHY: Brave the Storm. One of the most perfect melodic metal albums of all time. I still can't believe it didn't own the radio when it came out.
Yeah, that's a great record. I used to have that on cassette and I'll be darned if I know what the heck happened to it, and I don't get rid of anything. I bet I loaned it to someone and forgot to get it back...
@@BSPVMD When I bought that album it came with a t-shirt of the the album cover.. It was two sizes too small!! Great album though! 😎
@@haitolawrence5986 That's awesome, lol!

I'm in my early 20's and have so much respect for the 70s and 80s rock scene. I admit I'm one of those people who uses Spotify to listen to all of my music. Though I come on this channel to continuously expanding my music library, though too be honest I'm very grateful for the time I'm in since I can find so many bands within seconds and also have so many eras as well. For instance I love 70s and 80s rock, but I also love modern psychedelic and dream pop. It's always a pleasure see y'all's view on different rock classics!
Thanks for the Malice suggestion, Terry. I like it on first listen!!
Fantastic!
I was in the army and shot . . . . a music video.
Cool, Brah.
Thank you for your service.
Great picks! Love all these bands, Stone Fury, Vyper, Lee Aaron, Icon, Coney Hatch, Kickaxe!
I'll just add Q5, Mama's Boys, The Rods and Biscaya.
Lee Aaron is fantastic
20 plus excellent songs
I love everything she has ever tried
Had to go to Sweden n Germany cause her stupid manager early in career
@@davoshaunessy7481 Totally agree! She's an awesome singer!!! I was lucky enough to see her a few times live back in the eighties. Great shows!!
The Rods were definitely underrated and I saw Mama's Boys open for Gary Moore :)
@@TerryWickham Oh yes! So did I! They opened for Gary in 85! It was long time ago, but I remember it was such a great show!
On that tour they were presenting "Power and Passion" and Gary Moore "Run for cover".
Saw them open for Blue Öyster Cult in 88 too.
Magnum had a spectacular run in the 80s that I really can't explain how was so ignored; I mean, ok, Chase the Dragon and Eleventh Hour were maybe too proggy for mainstream, but Storyteller's Night, Vigilante and Wings of Heaven are pure AOR/Hard rock bliss, true gems that should have catapulted them to a minimum of Survivor/Journey/Foreigner status. Great conversation! 🍺🤘
Great band but i think they suffered because they were heavier than genesis/yes to b considered british prog, they belonged more in the styx/kansas genre but werent from america
,, and Lee Aaron is still at it .. just released a new CD called Radio ON ...
Really like Terry on here, cool stories and some cool picks!!
Sea Hags. Great album. Opened for Badlands and killed it. Also, Kick Axe - Welcome to the Club. Riot - Fire Down Under.
Fire Down Under is hands down THE most undervalued hard rock album of all time-on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being best, Fire' is an 11! SEA HAGS only album is so freakin' good! Great, bluesy, trashy riffs, awesome groove and cool vocals-should have been HUGE!
Mothers Finest Ironage. Like Tina Turner or Aretha Franklin with Marvin Gaye or Stevie Wonder fronting a combination of AC/DC and Black Sabbath.
Illusion S/T features members of MF on an album that sounds like Led Zep crossed with AC/DC and a guest vocal spot for the great Steve Marriot.
we don't hear that many Mother's Finest here in the great universe of SoT, cheers!
@@brunoooots I don't think I've ever heard them mentioned. Maybe Pete is not aware of them. The guy is incredibly knowledgeable about so many artists including many I would be willing to bet few of us have heard of but even Pete can't know every band that's ever existed.
"Court In The Act" is one of my favorite records. Brian Ross is my favorite NWOBHM vocalist.
Wasn't expecting to see nomeansno mentioned here, but Martin happily surprised me.
GREAT SHOW PETE!! our generation rocked and still rocks guys! glad to see the Blue Murder, what an album! \m/ \m/

Krokos One Vice at a Time is their best album….no skips, turn ‘em all up.
Tygers of Pan Tang: Spellbound. Myofist: Thunder in Rock. And I totally agree on Coney Hatch.

Best job I've ever had...And listening to AFN Radio, watching American TV,. Cheap cigarettes and alcohol from the commissary, if you knew the right people. Great times.
Thank you for your service.
Cool
My choices that weren't mentioned, no order:
1. Marshall Law- s/t (1989): predated the sound of Painkiller by a year, tragically under known
2. Anthem- Bound To Break (1987): Japanese speed metal at its absolute finest. If you can find it, don't hesitate.
3. Riot- Thundersteel (1988): American power metal, I debated which Riot album to include, but this one is underrated even among Riot fans. Killer record.
4. Savage- Hyperactive (1985): their first album is a NWOBHM classic, but this one deserves more love. Those riffs...
5. Rage- throw a dart at any of their '80s albums, Peavey's vocals are love 'em or hate 'em, but supreme German speed metal all the same
6. Eloy- Metromania (1984): unfairly crapped on, I think this is one of their most interesting albums. Unashamedly '80s but still proggy, it's my favorite by them.
7. Giant- Last of the Runaways (1989): they're like the Toto of hair metal, a bunch of session cats who threw together a hard rock band. Dann Huff is that rare combination of crazy good guitarist and highly talented singer. The whole band has chops for days, perfect pop metal.
8. Vicious Rumors- Digital Dictator (1988): more US power metal, the band that introduced Vinnie Moore. Another of Mike Varney's bands, their second album after Vinnie Moore left, quality metal from start to finish. A tragedy that they're not a household name
9. Loudness- Soldier of Fortune (1989): the album that introduced an American to the lineup in an attempt to widen their appeal in the US, ironically now dismissed because of it. Unfairly, might I add, this album was their best since Thunder In The East. Way better than another band that year who replaced a countryman with an American for similar reasons (Accept)
10. Autograph- Loud and Clear (1987): they had their big hit in '84, then pretty much were forgotten. This is their best, loudest, hardest-rocking album. Still the pop metal style of the first album, but more guitars, less keyboards. I play this more than their other albums, this one deserves way more love, Steve Lynch is on fire as always.
Honorable mentions:
1. Tokyo Blade- Night of the Blade (1984): might've snuck into my top-10 if I had more history with it. Underrated even compared to their underrated debut.
2. Kiss- Creatures of the Night (1982): underrated for Kiss, but it's Kiss, so how truly underrated could it be? I think it's finally getting its due as better than the far more famous Lick It Up.
3. AC/DC- Flick of the Switch (1983): like Kiss above, this is underrated for AC/DC, but still a massively well known band, so how underrated could any of their albums realistically be? This album deserves an evaluation from casual fans who only know the big hits
I would say Riot - Restless Breed.
Def Leppard - High n Dry , Anvil - Forged in Fire , Axe Witch - Visions of the Past ,Crossfire - Second Attack ,~~ Powermad - , Witch Cross - Fit For Fight , Ostrogoth - Full Moon Eyes, Chateaux - Chained and Desperate ,
Just awesome: 35 picks ( incl honorable mentions)
Terry, you nailed it : Malice, Rough Cutt, Icon but THANKS so much for Vyper, such a gem! Really criminal that they never get talked about!
Martin: Coney Hatch, fantastic. And the surprise : Highway Chile ( their guitar player Ben Blauw won a Ted Nugent guitar 40 years ago)
Pete: Fates Warning, Metal Church, Satan Heathen, Crimson Glory:,all tremendous
My picks on top of the ones above:
Madison : Diamond mistress, 84, Sweden
Rapid Tears : Honestly, 82, Canada
Powermad: absolute power, 89, USA
Pretty Maids: red hot and heavy, 84, Denmark
Sortilege: Metamorphose, 84, France
Cyclone: brutal destruction, 86, Belgium
Bodine: Bold as Brass, 82, Holland
Anvil: Metal on Metal, 82, Canada
Absolute gems, start to finish.
Honorable mentions: Vicious Rumors, Lizzy Borden, Witchkiller, Leatherwolf, Annihilator
Thank you and I couldn't agree with you more about Vyper. Check out Vyper LIVE in Kansas City. Nice to hear Santers mentioned. I had their three records but lost them when I moved away from home. I curse the day I let those records go. I should have held onto them. Pete, maybe that can be a show: records, or whatever, you once had but let go, and over a decade later look back wondering why, why didn’t I keep it!?
Fantastic show guys
Fates Warning “ No Exit” would be a great choice.😀
so strong-melodic and powerful.......essential Fates Warning!
Great show guys, well done. no cutting off one another each detail was very interesting. To me one of the albums that could have done much better was VANDENBERG self titled i think from 1984 and first album of Alcatrazz with great line up of Graham Bonnet and Yngwie Malmsteen
Glad that I'm able to hear this discussion among you guys. It's honored that some of my favorites albums also included in this discussion as well. Just to inform you guys that I'm from South East Asia and I already listened to Icon's debut album back in 1985 or 86 when I was 15 or 16. The funny thing is that I got a cassette from a small music shop near to my place which was Slayer on A side and Icon on B side and actually 2 song were missing and furthermore one of the song I just listened like half of it..lol.. I remembered that I straight away fell in love with World War, Under My Gun, Rock N Roll Maniac and off course the rest came after that. It didn't take me long time to really into the whole cassete. I try to find the vinyl or at least a cassette during that time and seems that no place selling this album. I only had a chance to enjoy their full album once the UA-cam available on the internet. My point is I totally blamed the distribution division of the record company for this reason. We are in the small country far away and we are not getting chance to have this albums. Yes, we had metal section in our music store but you definitely will find those big boys like. Maiden, Priest, Scorpions,Ratt etc etc.. easily.
Manowar - Hail to England
Running Wild - Port Royal
Savatage - Gutter Ballet
Warlord - And the Cannons of Destruction have begun ...
Great to see Tobruk mentioned, Jem Davis from FM on keyboards, always like the early version of Wild on the Run, released as a 45 on Neat Records
10 underrated Albums, no ranking:
Mad Max - Night of Passion (1987)
Epitaph - See you in Alaska (1980)
Autograph- Sign in Please (1984)
Y&T - Mean Streak (1983)
Grand Prix - Samurai (1983)
Angel City - Face to Face (1980)
Alien (SWE) - Alien (1988)
April Wine - The Nature of the Beast (1981)
Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush - What's next (1980)
Blue Murder - Same (1989)
Mahogany Rush's a good one: "Something's Comin' Our Way"!
Mad Maxx - great shout out !
'Sign in Please' did pretty decent numbers. 'Turn Up the Radio' still gets regular airplay on AOR radio stations. I think 'That's the Stuff' and 'Loud and Clear' are far more unappreciated in their catalog.
I was shopping albums starting in the late 60s. I'm a few years older than you. And I feel so fortunate to have been in high school and college during the 70s; med school in the early 80s. I wouldn't trade it for the world! Great music, great times.
Tytan Rough Justice; Initially released an Ep that’s just classic NWOBHM.
Love the great intro!
Great show as always. Martin and Pete are gold, and terry was a nice addition. I only wish these shows had show notes because I can never catch all the names mentioned ☹️

Great point on Fates Warning Pete. I discovered them on Perfect Symmetry. You'd think with the success of Queensryche, they would have been bigger.
Santers - yeah ! They also were Lee Aaron's backing band in the early days.
Omega - The Prophet (1985)
King Kobra - Ready To Strike (1985)
Pantera - Projects In The Jungle (1984)
The Cult - Dreamtime (1984)
AC/DC - Flick Of The Switch (1983)
Dark Angel - We Have Arrived (1985)
Rollins Band - Life Time (1987)
Exciter - Unveiling The Wicked (1986)
Savatage - Sirens (1983)
Diamond Head - Borrowed Time (1982)
Misfits - Earth A.D.-Wolfs Blood-Die (1983)
Flotsam And Jetsam - No Place For Disgrace (1988)
Rush - Grace Under Pressure (1984)
Soundgarden - Louder Than Love (1989)
Nirvana - Bleach (1989)
Flick of the switch is the definition of underrated album by over rated band
( OVER RATED IN THIS SENSE IS A COMPLIMENT )
Deep Purple’s who do we think we are - same vein
King Kobra - Ready To Strike and Pantera - Projects in the Jungle are both definitely underrated!
I gotta go with Warrior- "Fighting For The Earth"(1985), White Wolf- "Standing Alone"(1984), and Attila- "Rolling Thunder"(1986).
Warrior!
Warrior - Fighting for the Earth is a great album. Saw them live on that tour at the Chuck Landis Country Club in Reseda, CA. They were great…
@@mikep9377 that is awesome! They have a newer song (1998?) Fight of Fall(?) that I really dig...
White Wolf is simply bad generic 80s metal. The other ones rules.
Well, you know what they say about opinions.....@@MasaVanhanen
I'm 43 I'm new audiences and have expanded my punk hardcore roots and found a few different styles I love from just watching a couple months.
Some that come to mind: Q5 - Steel the light, Hitman, Shy - Excess all areas, HELIX - Wild in the streets, Giuffria - Giuffria. All things Pete mentioned are some of my fave albums of all time, Badlands, Blue Murder, Crimson Glory, Savatage, Fates Warning ...
Who renumbers the Band Warrior. Their album was called "Fighting for the Earth."
Took a chance on that one. Great stuff!!! 😎🤘🏻
@@haitolawrence5986 They were popular in Los Angeles. Too bad that they had problems with the record company.
Loved that Warrior album…I saw them on that tour at the Chuck Landis Country Club in Reseda, CA. They were really good live too.
I absolutely love these sorts of shows, shining a light on either long-forgotten favourites or giving me new things to obsess about.
When it comes to 80s "rediscoveries", my own tastes tend towards the slightly oddball, low-budget versions of 'heavy metal', namely Manilla Road, Cirith Ungol, Brocas Helm, Liege Lord, Heavy Load Omen etc.
Also albums like Ample Destruction by Jag Panzer any of the first 4 Chastain releases.
Others...
Warlord - And the Cannons of Destruction.. ( or Deliver Us EP)
Holy Terror - Mind Wars
Baron Rojo - Volumen brutal
Slaughter - Strappado
Sacrilege - Beyond the Realms of Madness
Sabbat - History of a Time to Come and Dreamweaver
And one of my fave NWOBHM albums by anyone - Savage - Let it Loose.
But nothing beats NoMeansNo!
SAVAGE! Why Let It Loose isn't blasting out of every car on the road is beyond me!
Super episode, guys. Agree about ICON! And several others the guys mentions ...

I don't know whether any of these records are "underrated", I just know that these are unknown to the general population. I largely relied on rock radio during the '80s and I don't remember most of this stuff having been played. My subconscious mind might remember some of the obscure songs played on Metal Shop, but most of these albums I discovered later on.
Terry's Lee Aaron pick...great.
I've followed Lee ever since and she's a great singer still releasing good albums.
Call Of The Wild which followed Metal Queen would be my fave Lee Aaron album.
As usual...Martin is in line with me.
Waysted were a great band.
Very cool
Some albums I want to mention if it is only heavy/metal and hardrock. I will exclude thrash or death metal to make it easier. Or other extreme stuff
Lizzy Borden : Visual Lies
Leatherwolf : Street Ready
Sword : Metalized
Armored Saint : Raising fear
Bonfire : Fire Work
"A Distant Thunder" and "Nosferatu" by Helstar were early prog-metal of the styles that Symphony X and Dream Theater would expand upon. Very underrated.
Yes!! Finally someone giving this DESCENT band some bloody credit…those two albums are killer!!
Malice "license to Kill" is a phenomenal album. Good choice. Awesome vocals.
Definitely, I bought that one back in 1988 and in eve now in the car I tend to play it regularly enough, great twin guitars and an excellent, meaty Max Norman production.
essential metal album-you are correct sir!
Nice that TKO and Rough Cutt got a mention
I’m late to this video. I grew up in the 80s and went to college in the early 90s. I agree that going to a music store and searching through the CDs (in my case) was amazing. I feel like my generation was the last to truly be passionate about albums, maybe even music in general. Over the last few years, I’ve been purchasing used CDs from eBay filling in some of the gaps in my collection. It has actually somewhat sparked my passion for music again. This channel has also done that to a certain extent so thank you!
Pantera used to cover Metal Church in the club's when they got Phil. I own it all except for about 5. I was hoping Martin mentioned Wrabit - Debut. Terry mentioned Lee Aaron , so, there's a connection. I have a story for every album.
Tobruk - Wild on the Run!!!
Kick Axe - Vices!!!
Saw both Tobruk and Lee Aaron 1985 in Poperinge, Belgium, at Heavy Sound festival. First time Slayer set foot on European soil. Oh my.
@@Yonder88 Wow! Would've loved to be there! 🤘
Anything by Y&T basically.
Amen
Yep and TNT
Dave Meniketti is an absolute beast on guitar AND behind the mic! Earthshaker and Black Tiger are as essential as oxygen! Y&T ripped it up, live, and although I like the early albums a helluva lot, they never really captured the magic they showed on stage-never failed to deliver in a live setting!
The first band I ever saw live, opening for AC/DC in Edinburgh back in '82... Not a bad way to start!!
@@iainhead9898 Awesome dude...
Good call on Fates Warning. John Arch only singer I'm intestered on this band.
Y and T Black Tiger
Realm -- Endless War
Deadly Blessing -- Ascend from the Cauldron
Leatherwolf -- s/t from 1987
Warlord -- Deliver Us
I agree Terry, it was (and still is) a great pleasure to go to record stores and discover new (or old) bands, go through the albums, buy sometimes based only on the covers...it's so cool! Just today, I went to an outdoor market and found 18 cd's/ Lp's from 80's, 90's bands for 2,5$ each (Symphony X, Bang Tango, Waysted, Lee Aaron, Black N' Blue...). Such a blast! Great show!
I think Metal Shop was everywhere in the USA. I remember listening to it in the Chicagoland area.
Yeah, Im surprised Rough Cutt wasnt bigger than they were. They had some really good tunes, Paul was/is a great vocalist and the guitarists were really good. They had their own sound too. Didnt really sound like the other bands out at the time. Actually Jake E Lee and Craig Goldy were in the band at one time. "Take Her" is still one of my favorite 80s metal tunes. I think Craig and Dio helped write it. Maybe if they had a video on MTV for Take Her, things wouldve been different.
Hurricane - Take What You Want
Suicidal Tendencies - How Will I Laugh Tomorrow When I Can't Even Smile Today
