Totally agree with your points made. As far as adaptations go, I think the series does a great job in staying pretty faithful to the source material so far…
Unfortunately, people forget there’s also a dissonance between both mediums, the action and drama are paced differently. Considering TLOU game has a lot of action throughout, it simply isn’t possible to recreate that for every episode, as the production budget would be insanely high, so the writers have to pick certain episodes that are more character driven and shuffle around action/set pieces into other action oriented episodes.
We can’t have it all people, if you don’t like the show, just play the game again. A lot of the new audience become intrigued and then play the games, the fan base grows, allowing us to have more constructive conversations on what the game/show did better. Everybody wins!

I’m a huge fan of the last of us 1. I’ve played it through like 12 times. I’ve played part 2 all the way through 4 times even though I don’t like the way the characters were written. I love the gameplay and world. And I love lev and the saraphite stuff. Anyway my opinion is that episode 1 was amazing except for Ellie getting sadistic excited when Joel had to beat a face into a pulp.
Episode 3 sucks. It’s not because bill is gay. I’ve always known he was gay. That does not matter. No matter what this played like a boring save the budget garden lunch party episode.
Lastly if you think this some all time great episode. Go watch breaking bad. Most of the episodes of that entire show are better than this episode.

On any yardstick along the lines of storytelling, writing, acting, production, this episode was top shelf and absolutely deserves to win awards this year. All we're really left with is deconstructing the various guises, excuses and proxies people are using to attack that they hated seeing a storyline about a gay character (who is also gay in the game) and try to re-spin it as an invention by HBO to force a woke agenda because they are viscerally disgusted by gay people.

Actually, Bill and Franks story was like a full movie with 3 acts within a TV episode. The writing on that episode was one of the best I've ever seen. All the little details are just incredible. I love Part 1 and Part 2, they are by far the best games I've ever played and I just LOVE the adapation HBO / Craig / Neil are doing. Many of the iconic moments, but then the newly added stuff feels so "fresh" and makes the whole The Last of Us world even better! I can't wait to see what they do with adapting Part 2, especially some of the HOLY SHIT moments like the island. This is gonna be epic!

While I did not cry when I saw this episode I actually did feel happy for Bill and Frank because they have found something that we all want one way or another and that is love. I also like how they handled Bill’s character in the show while he still sort of is the same isolated loner who has trust issues and is a little paranoid (still putting it lightly) and there is some of that signature humor like when Joel and Ellie find the note. He finally made something of himself that was never in the game and I think it was a good choice that the creators of the show made.

This definitely was the version of bill we had in the game. In game Bill did have a partner he lives with for a while. The point of divergence is probably the argument we saw. Video game Bill separated from Frank while TV show Bill stuck it out. Personally I found TV version to be much more interesting.

  • @Duskofdead

It's difficult to sympathize really with people want to try to grapple Last of Us and force it to just be a straight linear zombie apocalypse story about Joel and Ellie killing infected. Pretty much every divergence in the fanbase beyond that comes down to a question of inclusion: are you okay, or not okay, with an incredibly well crafted world and an incredibly well crafted story which also includes, as in reality, characters who are gay, lesbian, trans, whatever. None of it ever felt forced or artificially crammed into the story for me, weak and cheap storytelling is the very last thing I hear pretty much anyone accuse TLOU or Naughtydog of. And this divergence really reflects people's real world values and beliefs. I can't sympathize with people who want to say they're OK with there being gay people, but they just never want to see them. And can't sympathize with people who played the games and know there were gay characters, including the most critical character of both games, but say that that was somehow a problem and they went about their business playing a game where they pretended that wasn't there, so now it's all a big controversy that the show is actually sticking to it and not changing it for a very narrow, prejudiced part of the fanbase.
If there was some equal/opposite and compelling position that the diversity of characters shown in the TLOU world are somehow over the top and not a reflection of real people you find in the real world, and would find in an apocalypse, we could have that discussion. But there isn't. There's wishful thinking from people who do not like any of these people that we could just have videogames and television that completely exclude them from storytelling so that "they don't have to see them/have it forced on them." I think that pretending we have to force a posture that both sides have valid views here and nobody should be called out for being in one or the other is a very false equivalency. This is akin to the discussion that went on in our culture half a CENTURY ago when black characters first began appearing as neighbors, housekeepers, side characters in otherwise all white shows. There's a right side and a wrong side.

Just finished listening to your first part, and honestly, expanding on certain side characters does work for me. It was done a lot in the Once Upon a Time show on ABC, and in the Ghost of Tsushima game, both of which are stories that I love, so I’m cool with this show going that route.
I hope they expand on Sam and Henry the same way.

It shows more of Ellies ptsd side kinda (where she has lost many ppl) and pls its quite literally how the game did, it takes place during the winter 😭 like see the source materials, dont be mad at the show! I think the game's story wouldn't have worked that well and this just seems to fit really well while advancing the story in the correct direction. Theres little to no pushback when it comes to things like these where the story is slightly modified and something more inclusive is applied, because they represent groups oppressed in everyday life, all over the country, all over the world.
While these are shows based off source material, at the end of the day--the source material is fiction. The fact people would judge a show based on the skin color of characters is essentially cloaked racism.

I was a bit bummed we didn't see some of the action of traversing through an overrun version of Lincoln with a grumpy Bill, and didn't get the car scene with Ellie/Joel/Bill, but I did really enjoy the episode. I loved the time Joel and Ellie got in the beginning and end, and the end felt like a satisfying start to their journey. And I especially loved that we got to actually see Bill and Frank's relationship and backstory bc Joel's sexuality wasn't fleshed out much in the game thanks to the controversy (He only referred to frank as his 'partner' and had multiple gay porn magazines so like)
Personally I think the show's main and really only issue is the time constraints, being HBO does such short seasons. I think the show should've had like- 12 episodes maybe? Instead of 9. Episodes 1 and 2 felt good on time but I think episode 3 could have been a 3 and 4. Show us maybe Bill tries to die with Frank but say, something messes up and he cant, and he cant bring himself to do it afterwards and remains miserable. Skip like 2 years later, hes stopped really keeping care of Lincoln and it looks like it did before Frank showed up. He finds Joel and Ellie in a section of the town thats cut off from the rest, and sort of overrun. He helps them get through the town and we have alot more scenes from the game. Like Joel getting in Bill's trap, the group moving through the highschool, and then through the neighborhood. Then we finally get to Lincoln and he gets Joel and Ellie on their way, maybe something happens and Bill dies trying to get them out of there, or after his encounter with Ellie and Joel he finally brings himself to join Frank. We could still get Ellie and Bill's interactions but maybe they also get an emotional moment where he opens up about Frank and just balls, and Ellie could comfort him. Joel would have been wondering throughout the episode what had happened to him.

Firstly, I appreciate the open dialogue and discussing difficult subjects within the community. I believe this is the message Neil and his team at Naughty Dog were trying to convey, especially with Part II. Having said that, I'm having difficulty separating the game's story from what they're doing on HBO. Many of the diversions from the show just don't hit the same emotional story beats that I got from the game, which I think just does it better. The love story between Bill and Frank, while not my cup of tea, is something I think works as a standalone episode. But what I find frustrating is it makes Bill's role in the story less vital to Joel and Ellie's mission.

For me, it has to do with pacing. For a TV audience that is being drip fed episodes every week there has to be some element of hope or the show is going to fall too far into nihilism to recover. There has to be some sign that life is still worth living, or else people are going to stop caring. The direct connection between player and character is not there in a TV show; writers have a different task. Honestly, I think that has more to do with why HBO did this than any other reason.
That isn't to say that people upset about it being changed are wrong, I'm just tossing out my theory for why it happened and whether or not I think it worked.
It was beautifully done. Even if you don't like the change, if you can view it just as an alternate universe or an independent side story, it's a fantastic piece of media. The actors rocked it, and I think that it will tie neatly into the theme of the show, albeit in a different way than Bill did in the game. But I just think that after the deaths of Sarah and Tess, and without Tommy back in the narrative yet, with the upcoming death of Henry and Sam, HBO had to throw the audience a bone and BIll and Frank were it.

I hate how people are saying they’re going “woke” by diverging from the story. There should be nothing woke about having gay people, as they existed.
Plus, we know Bill was gay. There were gay magazines that Ellie found in his bunker.
As someone who’s always loved the game and even was a bit disappointed that Bill took his life, I think it makes sense. I feel as this would have been the same route that Bill would have took had him and frank worked it out in the game. He obviously cared a lot and loved that man. That’s what turned him cold in the first place.
Just like with the earlier episodes, I feel like some changes were made just because a lot of it relied on gameplay and survival that probably wouldn’t work the same on screen / in real life. Like that truck scene in the game? What are the odds that someone survives something like that?
I cried like a baby in the end, it was gut wrenching. And because Bill is only in like 5% of the game, it doesn’t effect the story as a whole. It was nice to see a break from the whole intense scenes to see that there were two people who could still live a whole life together and die happily in each other’s arms, neither taken over by the infected. I’m excited for episode 4!

...Given the current political climate, consider the perception of those you think are just whining. That's exactly the dismissal and dehumanization that used to be applied to the vulnerable groups that are being exalted presently. And politics is about getting people to other each other.

Here’s my issue. In a vacuum, Bill and Frank’s story is perfectly fine. Within the context of the story of the show, though (notice I’m not coming at this for how inaccurate it is to the game), it makes absolutely no sense being here. Their story has literally no effect on the plot of the show. You could cut it and lose absolutely nothing if you ask me, especially considering the fact that Bill and Frank are already dead by the time Joel and Ellie get to their town. We spent an hour dilly-dallying away from the actual plot and it absolutely killed the pacing for me. I was just waiting for that segment to be over.
This episode was a solid 3.5/10 for me, where the first two were around 8/10s.
I’m glad people did enjoy it, I really am, but I wasn’t a fan at all.

Let me start by saying i have not played the games and my criticism is not for the content its self. i finished the episode deeply confused to what narrative purpose it served.
As a standalone narrative the acting is great and the concept is compelling, but it felt like a sudden and jarring loss of narrative traction on what is supposedly a serialized premium show.
Upon reading the wiki to work out how this could possibly been a level in a game i have come to the realization that the episode seems to represent the show runners trying to counteract or directly comment on the existing narrative of the game. Thats their right, but as a tv viewer Bills arc exists in a vacuum, has essentially no impact on anything, and is mismatched with the overall tone of the world.
tldr; this episode does not serve the meta-narative and i feel penalized for not owning a playstation and playing the game.

It took for the 3rd episode for the show to get wide media coverage, like Kimmel, Colbert, snl, Fallon. Some outlets dont even care about the game or the overall story, they just care that it had a gay story.
To be fair, the episode was really well made, and it was review bombed negatively partially because it had a gay story. But let's not act like people arent blindly giving it 10s for the same reason. There's review "bombing" on both sides.
Imo I thought the episode was great on it's own, but I felt like it did nothing to progress the main plot or add to the lore of the important elements of the game. As far as the gay love story, I dont mind it at all, I just feel like the point and emotion can be made just as great without a scene like the one with them doing it.

These aren't the reasons I dislike the approach they took; Here's why I do:
The only reason (most) people fell in love with the game is the bond between Joel and Ellie because, it being a video game, their's was the only perspective we could follow. Taking that away and telling stories of all these side characters takes not only the focus away, but the time needed to see them bond with one another. Unfortunately, I think this issue already presented itself in episode 3 - Ellie asking Joel weather she's 'family' felt out of nowhere to me, because the whole last episode they barely had screentime together and the episode before Tess just died. See where I'm getting at?

Now my only issue is they got the actors to come out and make a breakdown about the episode. Personally they did not need to do that. just treated like an ordinary thing which it is. As soon as you start blowing it up and let's face it it's just a Studios trying to get a pat on the back. The episode didn't need to be explained by the actors it was perfectly done in the episode because they were good actors and personally trying to highlight it just brings unnecessary eyes on it. the thing I don't like about this episode is 1) I miss the Joel and Ellie-parts!! It's a whole different story, one that doesn't matter (that much) to Joel and Ellie's story. I don't necessarily care that they changed a lot from the game, I care because we see Joel and Ellie for like ten minutes and 2) people are obsessed with it and will probably not be as obsessed with a couple that'll matter more in the end (read: Ellie and Dina)
I think the episode is amazing. I think it's beautiful and it's super cool to see two gay people grow old and happy together!!! But I think it would've been better as a standalone episode or movie.
also, to explain why Bill stands in the middle of the road: he doesn't get shot until he shouts. no one saw him (and Bill probably knows no one would see him), he only got shot because he was being loud.

Episode 3, and already we are in Pittsburgh and going passed it. Virtually all of episode 3 shown here is not even in the game. It is interesting to see some back story. But I feel the episodes are moving too fast in comparison to the game. The game has the script all laid out, and many of us have played part 1 and 2 a couple of times because its so good. What might be interesting is to run a poll. Who has played the game and if they liked the episode. I have played both games, so far I'm disappointed how it's going but will try a couple more episodes before iIgive up on it. So far, not a fan of the series.

Honestly, I don't think a 'game'-based episode would've worked as good in the series. Most of the time during this in-game episode you are roaming around the trip-wired city looking at infected being blown up. And the gameplay became even boring at some point. Yes, I said that. Fight me.
So there was a need in character development anyways.
The love story? Well, yeah, I skipped a couple of scenes because they didn't work for me personally (it took me a while to figure this formulation out). And yet, the episode itself did work for me. And the 'happy end' of Frank and Bill gave me some "On the Beach" vibes (F to emotional stability of anyone who survived this film).

Hi there. I'm a massive fan of this franchise. First of all I work in the most ethnically inclusive and diverse environment in the UK the NHS. So I have no problem with people of colour or their sexual orientation. Yes this episode was very well done, yes I was uncomfortable with the homosexual content. But that's because in the UK that kind of stuff is only really shown in programmes that are squarely aimed at the LGBTQ community, so it's fairly easy to avoid, if someone doesn't want to see it. I have no problem with Bill's sexuality either, as I was expecting it to get at least one mention during the episode. No my problem is that Bill's town is one of the highlights of the game and that episode 3 basically tore it up to focus on one minor character (Bill) and a corpe (Frank). I feel they could have covered their story in around 15 minutes, then have Joel and Ellie turn up. They could then have easily had Bill & Frank help the pair with maybe Frank eventually getting bitten and the pair taking their own lives after Joel & Ellie leave. This would have covered their storyline and finished the episode as it did.

I havent watched the episode yet, but I get the sense they're changing a lot, and fans who want the show to be a more faithful adaptation of the game are frustrated. I think what they did in this episode is absolutely beautiful and well worth watching (from what I've heard), but they also cut out an entire section of the game in favour of it, which would've been awesome to see on screen. It really calls into question what an adaptation is supposed to be and what makes a good one. Is it supposed to use the source material is inspiration to do their own thing and tell new stories or dive deeper into existing characters and storylines, or is it supposed to be a carbon copy from book/game to screen? People were already pissed at some of the casting decisions, and I saw that clip of a clicker kissing Tess and I have to wonder WTF they were thinking?! On the one hand creativity is a good thing and it would be too predictable to keep the show exactly the same as the game, but at the same time there are iconic moments and relationships that fans of the game want to see in this TV series that they have skipped over or replaced with something else, and sometimes that works and is actually an improvement and sometimes it doesn't and leaves fans confused and unsatisfied. You see this all the time in TV and movie adaptations of beloved books and games etc. I think adaptations are best when they take what worked in the original and dive deeper into it, but when they completely replace it with something else and the story and relationships between the characters is different because of it, then it will get rightly criticised

BUT it comes at the expense of some of the best moments of the game! If that had just told that story in flashbacks while still adapting the Bill's Town section of the game and having Bill, Joel and Ellie interact while still getting that Bill and Frank content, then nowhere near as many people would be complaining about it. I just found that episode boring - a kind of banal, cliché love story not in tune with the entire Last of Us universum. If it were straight, I'd find it equally not appealing. However I understand it is important for LGBTQIA+ community to see characters like themselves playing a major role on screen as historically they have been super repressed. Fair enough. It's only a pity the creators have not managed to correct the representation bias in a way that would not be so lame on the level of narration and story design.

I think it’s ok to change things in a story to adapt for the new medium, as long as it improves the story. I like the change they made with Sam, since it makes him more reliant on Henry. Changing the story to adapt to a new medium or improve the story is completely fine. It is a video game ADAPTATION. My problem lies more with this being a waste of time. By the time Joel and Ellie get to the town, Frank and Bill are both dead. So what was the point of telling us their lives, when they have no bearing on the main plot? If Frank or Bill were still alive, and had a role similar to in the game, I could understand a flashback a little more, since they would actually interact with Joel and Ellie in the confines of the main story. This story could’ve been told with a few lines of dialogue. Ellie asking why Joel would know this place or its people, and Joel explaining that they used to trade together in the past. Now usually I don’t mind expanding on things. Even if it is undeniably pointless. But this season is only getting a handful of episodes. That time could have been spent fleshing other things out, rather than focusing on side characters that aren’t even present during the main story. At that point, you might as well make an episode about that soldier that Joel sold those pills to in EP1. I saw some similar issues in episode 5, and it’s starting to get a bit annoying. I’m still interested in the series, but being called a homophobe by people involved in the series for not liking ONE of the episodes is not at all appreciated. So I’m glad you touched on that.

It's only controversial because people are snowflakes. They are either too obsessed with the game or they are grossed out by 2 dudes kissing (or both).
