Kirk meant to say, 'no-one will remember any of my solos, post-1991.'

When i hear Kirk say these things - and this is not the first time - I get the feeling he is trying to convince himself that he no longer needs to pay attention to the details in his playing.

Solos are the climax of the song and at times they can be the most memorable part of the song.

Kirk is experiencing senility. A musician of his caliber (in terms of seniority) should think twice about making statements like this. Although he is simply stating his opinion, younger fans just getting into metal or playing guitar in general could use this as an excuse to not further enhance their overall skill.

I totally agree with you. I got my first electric guitar around 1990, and the reason was that I wanted to play Metallica stuff. Especially Kirk was my hero back then, I practiced his solos for hours and hours… but then in late summer 1992 something „ear-opening“ happened that would change my taste for metal guitar solos forever: It was a Sunday evening, the sun was setting, I was on the Autobahn A3 in my red VW Golf on the way to Montabaur where I did my military service, and I was tuned in to a Hard Rock radio show hosted by Stefanie Tücking (older Germans will remember her). She announced Megadeth‘s new single „Symphony of Destruction“ and played the tune. Now, I had never paid much attention to Megadeth before, so I had no idea what to expect, and to be honest my expectations were actually pretty low. When hearing Dave‘s chromatic chorus I thought „wow, that’s actually kinda cool“, but it was Marty‘s guitar solo that literally BLEW!!! MY!!! MIND!!!
I bought the album as quickly as I could, followed by Rust in Peace, and that was it. All of a sudden Kirk‘s solos that I used to love sounded generic and predictable to me, while Marty‘s stuff was fresh, new and so different from everything else.
You see Justin, the fact that I still remember every detail of my „Marty moment“ and the lasting impact it had on my musical preferences proves your point. One might say well, but I wasn’t a casual listener as I was into guitar playing and solos. However, it was the emotions and the adrenalin that got me hooked … in other words, the pure joy of hearing Marty play like he did, which I would have also felt as a non-musician.

Kirk could be right about the majority of the younger listening public because their ears only get to hear what algorithms or streaming services push on them. I do not think the guitar solo will ever truly die. There are just too many excellent players out there and people that love their music, too. The world is bigger than the four walls that surround you. Love the vid. Thanks for posting.

There's a trend I've noticed lately regarding the topic of solos. This whole idea that "non-musicians don't care." There's this widespread implicit assertion being made here that musicality is some sort of democracy. That is to say, if 500 million teenage girls around the world love a song and only 100,000 guys who play guitar like a different song, the song that has more mass appeal is somehow "better music." I don't know about you, but this sentiment disgusts me. It's basically saying that mass media designed to milk the most juice out of consumers before being discarded for the next hit song has more artistic merit than a song that is loved across generations of musicians.
I'm sorry, but music (and art in general) is not a democracy. You're not doing something bad by enjoying lower forms of art, but you are not someone who derives a spiritual purpose from deeply engaging with a complex art form. You can call this attitude elitist all you want, but I am right. Art has a barrier to entry and ALWAYS HAS. All those household name classical musicians composed pieces by commission for aristocrats to be played for an exclusive audience. Highly technical playing demands a highly technical ear. Guess what? McDonald's is the most successful burger chain of all time. But McDonald's is not a Michelin star meal. And you know what else? MOST PEOPLE CANNOT TELL WHAT MAKES A $300 DINNER WORTH MORE THAN A $6 CHEESEBURGER! Other than the fact that it costs more and has a celebrity chef's name on the restaurant, and therefore they will just say "it's good" to not look stupid. Just like how people will say Paganini sounds amazing if you play it for them despite the fact they would never go out of there way to listen to romantic era compositions.

True if You play the typical Kirk wah wah solo. Or do some 22-20-19 20-19-17 19-17-15 and so on runs all the way down the neck. No one's gonna remember that shit. People do remember stuff like tornado of souls, green tinted sixties mind intro

Kirk thinks that if he whines about shredding enough that he will suddenly be as good as Marty because people know Marty has complained about "shredding" before.

I LOVE Kirk's solos in St. Anger... beautiful, BEAUTIFUL!
Seriously, Kirk was "dangerous" 20? 25? years ago when people (like me) listened to his non sense about "solo's are not important, because they take up less than 10% of a song" or "screw chords with only the root and thind major/minor because they sound bad". Now he's just nobody, like, sadly, the rest of Metallica (still one of my favorite bands (music up to Justice, to be clear)).

Rule of relevance: If something is constantly referred to in terms of it being "back" then its already part of the nostalgia-industrial complex and therefore past its prime.

i hate the "ur guitar (solo) doesnt matter no one will care about it" take so much. Even before I was a guitar player the solo was usually my favorite part of songs, and they are a big reason why I wanted to pick up guitar too.

Kirk is both right and wrong. No one will remember lifeless solos like every one from the last 2 metallica albums but generations after us will still be talking about solos from songs such as bohemian rhapsody or tornado of souls because they are musically interesting and serve the songs perfectly, something that he no longer seems bothered to compose.

Kirk has played a few solos that are popular with non musicians. I think he's talking about modern audiences. A lot of modern rock and metal doesn't have solos. And there's not that much guitar at all in popular music anymore.

The guitarist that has been playing the same infamously derivative wah-wah solo’s for thirty years, and amidst much recent controversy, is now declaring that the guitar solo is dead - if so - it’s because said guitarist highly contributed to killing it!

Kirk msut have impressed you very much when you first discovered him. Now a lot of water has run down the Rhine river. Kirk desperately tries to stay relevant by appearing in various media. Maybe it's not worth to pay that much attention to him any more. There are so many cool new players out there! Get well soon and then create something remarkable yourself!

What's wrong with Kirk's message? How many Metallica fans are guitarists. 2 - 3 %? Maybe less? Isn't it true that guitar solos are rather annoying for non-musicians. To be honest, as a twelve-year-old, when I first listened to Metallica, Iron Maiden (especially the Powerslave LP, which is now one of my favorite albums), I found all the guitar solos annoying because I preferred to hear the riffs and the vocals. Of course, that changed when I started playing guitar at the age of thirteen, which I've been doing for 38 years now. So I see it more as Kirk meaning all non-musicians. As a guitarist, however, I think that he has been practicing the same guitar solo on every song for years and will hopefully master it one day. Cheers.

Who cares what most people think about guitar solos? 8 million views of a youtube video means nothing.

    Keep rocking.

There was a period of time where it really wasn't cool to have solos -- that was like late-nineties through the 2000's. The good news is that since after C-19 it seems that more and more people are reviving the art of the guitar solo. I haven't seen guitar for guitar's sake be this popular in years..
Note however that there are still a lot of hipsters that are very hard to win over with a guitar solo. :(

I guess, he‘s frustrated because he ran out of good solos. And then you say things like that.. For me Kirk was the reason, too, to pick up an electric guitar besides Kerry King. So it’s really disappointing to hear such BS from him.

I think it's quite simple: Hammett got fat and lazy (figuratively speaking) and this is his way of deflecting any criticisms coming towards him. Kirk is a guy that needs to be pushed by a 3rd person to get something actually good out of him. Such a guy isn't around anymore. Instead of being honest to himself he rather takes down lead guitar as a concept.

If you let the fickle tastes of pop fans dictate the direction of your artistic expression you lost the plot. This is rock and roll bro it's about sex and drugs and offending people. Kirk is exactly right nobody gives a shit about the solo except for other guitarists. And I'm a professional guitar player.
