Haven't learned a single lick. 4 months in and my daily practice is variations of spider walk / chromatic, speed burst exercise, alternate picking, hammer on pull off, synchronization, scales (modal pentatonic, intervallic), chords and chord change, basic theory and notes on the fretboard and as of yesterday, vibrato. Some might say it's a very mechanical way to learn it. I agree, but I feel like those are the technical basics to get anywhere.
the only thing that improved my syncopation, specifically for sweeps, arpeggios, legato, were scales and dexterity exercises. you cant play a lick if you cant play the fundamentals thee lick was built upon. but nobody wants to hear that. they want that insider knowledge of "get sick quick licks" that will fast track their techniques in the time it takes to watch a youtube video. from my 30 years of playing, if i hit a wall and have trouble progressing, going back to basics usually is a good place to start
So true. Going back and re-tighten up the technique on the fundamentals always helps. I incorporate this tightening into warming up. If I miss a week or so of fundamental tightening, string changes get noisy and not seemless.
There is gold here. Justin makes some points in here I wish I could've heard and understood years ago. This is very important stuff if you want to progress. He goes quickly over things like practicing one hand at a time, etc. That has helped me so much. Justin really digs into things. Thanks!
You can be very proud of me. 7 years ago I started breaking the solo of The Anticosmic Overload into licks and I am still in the process of learning these licks.
If it is a new lick i first learn it without the metronom so i play it so often that i i dont have to think about the next note. After that with the metronom and speed it up. There are certain licks that feel very familier so it just more about memorizing the notes. I really love synyster gates solos when i learn a new solo from him it is mosty remebering the solo. (Just as an example) For me personlly it is really hard to learn new licks or techniques that i didnt use. Rather spending perfecting the things i already can play. Love the routine :) but also this is bit of lazzyness comfortzone. Like the intro from the stage from avenged sevenfold. God dam the tapping part. But it just repetion repetion. One day i will get. But this motivates me generly improve my tapping. Buy the way i discovered your chanel couple weeks ago and really whant to thank you. You pickslanting videos really change my playing. Ultimate goal became 2 way pickslanter:) Great exercise is starting the alternative picking lines you uselly start with an updstroke with downdroke or the other way around.

This is a great video because it addresses an important point that took me years to appreciate. It takes a long time to learn a single lick! Just playing it couple of times from the book isn't enough. Sure, a book or a tutorial or even transcribing can help you to get started, but it's still a long journey until you internalize that vocabulary and make it your own.
I completely agree Learn the licks because they seem fun or sound cool, make them your own, incorporate them into your vocabulary. I sometimes have my students learn a lick (a short one) and then improvise using only this lick or pieces of it. it really engages your creativity, the restriction makes you extra aware of the effect of each note in context.
Besides the book abuse - great analysis of the current industry of "lick porn". It's easy to sell such programs but i also see very little use for guitar students. You need concepts on how to practice correctly, not millions of lick data.
Nice vid! Aside for technique-specific licks that I do every day (for example, legato licks I use as exercises), I devote Saturday and Sunday to learning new licks and songs. I have about 15 licks I work on per 1-2 months. Right now I am working on some challenging Jack Gardiner licks that are just a blast to play. As well as some Mateus Asato licks and a few from Tom Quayle.
I'll tell you a secret!! Learn your pentatonic scale, then blues scale,and a few exotic!!! That is all you need!! Form your own ideas and licks and don't play exactly like someone else!!! You will have it made after that!!
That‘s a pretty simple minded kind of thinking. There is so much more to explore and why limiting to only these kind of scales. Yes if you wanna do only blues or rock, okay. And music is like a language, how can you come up with your own phrases and ideas when you never learned the basic vocabulary?
And copying other styles does not necessarily means that you don‘t have an individual style. A lot of guitar legends style is based on licks and solos from other guitar players, it‘s the melting pot that defines your own style
I really don't approuve how many guitarist approche music. Many just copy cat the other guys. So the easiest way to demonstrate something it's through techniques and speed playing non sense sequences and linear scales, in my opinion it's the lazy way. . When you have a small knowledge about piano, accordion or something different that gives to you a better perspective about aesthetics, rhythm, harmony etc. So building it's own exercises is the best thing ever. You can get excellent ideas just listening other instrument. Cuz come on, everyone play guitar today and everyone wants to be a virtuoso. The hard thing is how to create music for everyone.

I guess people should classify licks, and don't overplay certain class of licks (don't play only 1 string alternate picking licks for example)😮
