Been playing since 1987. Continual frustration for years. This video has taught a concept no one ever taught. Did Satriani not teach Hammett because he didnt notice or didnt care? Did this vibrato develop from the pick width influence on his fretting hand(0.88 mm)? This training you provide is more valuable than anything ive ever seen. Its been one month since my picking technique has been corrected. Most techniques in guitar were not looked at, how to hold a pick, pick angle, and now vibrato by anyone ever. This is German precision no nonsense. Exactly why i learned German from '87 to '91 and why im fluent in it even now. Precision. Keep on with the videos and training.
If i recall, during that jam video they played over a riff that Kirk brought to the table. Youd think between it being his riff and the chance to jam with one of his all time guitar heroes that hed bring his absolute A game....
Let the note sing, then add the vibrato. Also be aware of only changing the pitch one third. That gives a beautiful, violin type of quality. Jimmy hendrix, Jeff beck, Eric. Clapton and Jimmy page are good players to listen to and watch for great vibrato techniques, in my opinion.
You want to see good buttery smooth vibrato look at the stuff Brandon Ellis does. Also some pre-bend work and pitch shifting can make you sound more professional when doing vibrato.
Kirk's sense of intonation, or lack of it thereof, is his biggest weak spot. He's also not a great improviser (few are, usually). His best solos are the ones that he worked out, like "One" and "The Unforgiven". As far as his vibrato goes, I don't think his own ears are critical enough, I'm sure some of his colleagues in Metallica have thought about mentioning it, but they've probably figured that it's not worth the hassle... Good video.

Nee,da bist Du eher falsch. Auf den alten Aufnahmen hat er einen super guten Tone und benutzt,noch 60 ties Style ein schnelles Vibrato oder auch gar keins,was ich sehr geil finde und auch tue.Das hat Satriani in den Achtzigern in Interviews auch an Hammett gelobt. Musikalische Intensität kannst Du mit Vibratoübungen erreichen oder dem ausschließlichen Focus darauf nicht definieren. Wie man sich auf professionelle Situationen vorbereitet, weiss der natürlich auch.Das scheint ein anderes künstlerisches Ding zu sein. Der ist sehr introvertiert, vielleicht hat er einfach keine Lust mehr.
@@justin.hombach Kill em all, Ride the lightning mit sehr geilem, v.a unaufdringlichem(!!) schnellen Vibrato oder g a r keinem ( wie Cream, Hendrix, Bluesgitarristen ). Ich finde moderne Vibrati mit grossem Umfang nur bei Malmsteen gut,sonst eher aufdringlich - gewollt.
Deutsch ist nicht meine Muttersprache, aber Ich stimme ein bisschen. "Thrash/speed metal" (kill em all, Ride the Lightning) ist vor allem "speed-picking". Im jähr 1981, schnelle drums, schnelle guitars war das wichtigste.
Funny you should post this today, as my FB memories were throwing me back to a video I posted 3 years ago where I explained my approach to vibrato. The gist of it was "hit the pitch, wait, and shake dat axe." I like to think of it as if I were starting a fire. There is a gradual transition between the moment when the surface of the wood barely starts catching fire and the actual fire itself. If you were to blow on it too strongly, you'd be putting it out, so you actually want to wait just for the right moment. I also find myself experimenting with different types of vibrato. The classical one which lowers and raises the pitch in a more subtle way, the crazy Yngwie-ish/Zakk Wyldish one, the more traditional/"boomer" one, those last two only raise the pitch and bring it back to normal, slow and/or fast vibrato, matching the tempo, and so on and so forth. Sometimes I use the trem bar too, which in a way is closer to the classical one. Great video, as always, Justin! Thanks for sharing!
Spot on. I love Metallica and i love Kirk - but his vibrato is hideous. James is A LOT better at this. I’ve always wondered why he never made Kirk practice these things..
Great video! I've been working on when and how much vibrato to use during Neal Schon's Stone In Love outro. I'm not trying to match his....just trying to sound good. Same way I treat backup vocals.
Love this topic in general, i'm talking about this for years, a good Vibrato is extremely important ! I see this so many times, great guitarists with awesome technical skills and than a slow melody comes in and the Vibrato sounds horrible, not even a little bit intonated ! Nobody really cares (except for yourself) when you mess up one note in a super fast run but when the phrasing is bad, everyone will notice that ! I learned a lot about this from Michael Amott, I really love his Vibrato, very expressive and musical. Michael Schenker is one of his heroes, so no wonder why it sounds so good ;) Especially the combination Michael + Christopher Amott was great, their Vibratos matched very well together, the same now with him and Jeff Loomis.
Alot of players skip over the fundementals and go straight for the metal riffs and shred licks, sometimes it REALLY shows when thats the case. With Kirk its weird, he grew up listening to alot of great classic rock and blues players with great vibrato, youd think hed pick up on that and apply it to his own playing.

Leider… um ehrlich zu sein, man Wertschätzt das sehr selten. Bzw. Es ist ja auch nicht so wichtig ob man „besser“ ist, bzw. wie definiert man das? Ich wünschte mir ich könnte manchmal mehr eine „Fuck it“ attitude an den Tag legen, wo es mir egal ist wie ich spiele. Aber Selbstreflektion führt auch viel zu eigener Kritik und man sieht oft nur das, wo man sich verbessern kann (und das ist noch sehr viel 🫣).
The fade to black intro solo has great melody but of course Kirk shits all over it in every live concert with that dying goat vibrato. Even in the studio version. How can he not be aware of it? i don't understand.

If i improvise over a backing track i will do whatever i want as i am a musician with my own thoughts and way of playing. I dont care what Hendrix did. After this video I listened on youtube to the master of puppets solo isolated track of Kirk and some others to confirm. But the sheer aggresiveness and "violence" in his playing and picking was amazing in it's own right and it didnt sound wrong to me (in master of puppets atleast). What do you think about that Justin? Kirk is very inconsistent and gradually got worse over the years and doesnt he also have arthritis? Not defending him but just saying

I listened to some more isoloted solos and focused on his vibrato and it definitely is weak and could be objectively better. I think he's way sloppier live but what else is there to objectively criticise? Iam learning as well

Great video Justin! I agree 100%! In fact, I have recently invoked a great tip you reminded us of: "Stay out of the "danger zone" when bending! I cal it the "dead duck" sound. Squawk. Ouch. Thanks for the reminder! You are right about Kirk! The thing that is weird about Kirk's playing is that he can bend the strings and double stop pretty well when doing it fast (or at least he could in the 80's). He just has a deleted vibrato. Look at other guitarists who trained with Satriani like Alex Skolnick and you will see some sweet, very nice vibrato techniques, so maybe Kirk just has a bad ear? Is that possible? Finally, I'm really glad you mentioned Brandon Ellis, he is one of my guitar teachers right now. (Along with yourself for some of the speed and pick stuff!). I am working on a few of his solos, have been for about 6 months now, and the biggest challenge is getting my finger callouses up to par. As we speak, I am in pain. Very bad pain. My fingers hurt. Maybe tomorrow I will resume. Do you have any advice for building callouses? I will reiterate - "Dawn of Rats". This is my vibrato challenge to you, sir. I'm not sure. It's not easy. I haven't ever seen anyone get close. P.S., a piece of advice I learned from Brandon is that you don't always have to "match" the note you are vibrato-ing to, although this is a technique. I mean, the vibrato doesn't always have to be in key, and 1 and a half note vibratos can sound amazing even out of scale. Another technique is to bend "up" a note and then vibrato a whole note up and down. Yowch that sounds beautiful but is painful. Great stuff though Justin keep giving us the content love it!
Or maybe Kirk's style comes from this punk/thrash/nwobhm mix where the attitude was everything, not some fancy vibratos. Anyways, great video! I subscribe!

100% agree. Vibrato is really really crappy. And he looks so tense. He needs to take lessons.... His playing got worse. Same as Lars: needs lessons.
Kirk‘s vibrato really sucks and always did, even in the early days of Metallica, when his solos have been much better than now.

Also to complement this previous post, there are many more examples like Munky or even slash. Why are they so succesful while technically limited

I am working on a few of his solos, have been for about 6 months now, and the biggest challenge is getting my finger callouses up to par. As we speak, I am in pain. Very bad pain. My fingers hurt. Maybe tomorrow I will resume. Do you have any advice for building callouses?
I will reiterate - "Dawn of Rats". This is my vibrato challenge to you, sir. I'm not sure. It's not easy. I haven't ever seen anyone get close.
P.S., a piece of advice I learned from Brandon is that you don't always have to "match" the note you are vibrato-ing to, although this is a technique. I mean, the vibrato doesn't always have to be in key, and 1 and a half note vibratos can sound amazing even out of scale. Another technique is to bend "up" a note and then vibrato a whole note up and down. Yowch that sounds beautiful but is painful.
