6:00 my 80 year old grandpa was able to put on the headset and play this without guidance. And the mixed reality makes it a lot safer to use because you can still see walls, tables and seats.
I have had my quest 3 for exactly one day now (but was well quite prepared, having read over 20 reviews, amd previously owned quest 1 and 2 and others) - and I fully agree with everything said in this review; could not be more spot on.
Great review Stu. Balanced as always. I’m a Quest 2 owner. I admit I’ve been playing less on the Quest than I used to. This has convinced me to upgrade and fall in love with VR again…and AR now of course. Cheers ✌️

This is absolutely what the industry in general needed, a proper adoption of Augmented reality experiences will acceptable pass through! It’s a step in the right direction especially with the Vision Pro just around the corner, I can’t wait to get my hands on one of these and start developing some killer MR apps!

Thank you for this review, good to see someone focusing on everything they enjoyed and didn't, I never realized what was wrong until you mentioned the angle of the controller. It just feels weird when trying to shoot in a game. I definitely recommend saving a tonne of cash and buying a 3rd party elite strap and a 10k or 20k mAh battery pack, you can grab both for about 60% the price of the Quest 3 official elite strap
Just got one. You're right about the discomfort, jumped right on Amazon and they probably knew I would. Loving the smaller controllers, can't wait to try Eleven VR on it. Not sure if they upgraded Resident Evil 4 yet but it looks and plays great. Once the comfort strap comes I'll have a lot more to talk about but for now I'm going to ice my forehead. ;)
Thank you for the honest review! As a Quest2 owner, I am a member of a couple of Quest and VR groups and all reviews I've seen were overwhelmingly positive - as could be expected from people that coughed up not at all insignificant sum for it, trying to justify the purchase. By pointing out the negatives, you have solidified my previous decision to wait a bit - a bit of a price drop, new features will be fully supported (by Meta and 3rd party) and 256GB model will surely be available.
Yeah i think if you wait a couple of months this will be an amazing piece of kit... don't get me wrong though, you're going to be blown away by the upgrade either way!
I kinda doubt this theory, so i ordered Q3 now :) As for stock numbers im afraid we will see some price drop not as soon as 6 months... 256GB version is a BIG if... im afraid if there will be such a version i expect it in half of the headset life spam >1yr to boost sales. For Q2 owner waiting is what i would do, but this is my first VR so waiting is no good for me :D

Thanks for another great review, and thanks for also covering the issue with wearing glasses which I have never seen before on VR units. This has kept me away from them but seeing you can purchase inserts makes it something that can now be considered for me. I did however not appreciate you shooting the flumps, Teletubbies would have been great but the Flumps?

At first I thought the mixed reality feature was a gimmick and I would end up playing VR games exclusively on it. BUT the mixed reality feature is honestly the dopest thing I have ever experienced. 100% worth it and a huge leap for MR in the market. I can’t even imagine what they’re going to do next, for the first time in a long time.

It's slightly daunting how most reviewers cater to Q2 owners, though I understand that those viewers might need more convincing arguments to relegate their £300+ headset to a shelf. Wonder how many years until I'm watching Q4 videos and whispering "Mine is fine." to myself. I am a complete VR rookie and I believe my only experience with a headset was the OG Vive 5 or more years ago in a tech booth inside some fantasy room with books and potions. My memory of it is indeed vague, though I've always been enamored by the potential of VR, not from personal experience, moreso from people with the most recent tech expressing their enjoyment. Luckily (in a sense), I saw leaks of Q3 in the summer and decided to save up in the months leading up to its release. 3 months of pumping VR channel's viewcounts listening to the same facts will be over this wednesday and I couldn't be more excited to join you all in these experiences.

Another big improvement over the Quest 2 is the built-in audio, in both quality and loudness. You mentioned the sound from the fan but didn't talk about how great those little speakers are. Gives great confidence that the speakers they will fit into smart glasses will be great too.

This is the perfect review. It articulates my exact experience. Was surprised they literally had nothing big for launch, just a tech demo. They advertised Asgard 2 like you get it at launch. Was excited to play, but nope. Not til December. The few MR apps are pretty cool, though. Figmin is worth the price, IMO. I love the creative potential.
Great review Stu and i think that you're correct about Meta with thier somewhat lack of clarity. Featurewise the quest 2 has come a long way and its now currently great.... But some of them were a long time coming. It will likely be the same with 3. Hopefully meta wont sack too many of the engineers to delay updates further.

Battery is 19.44Wh instead of the Quest 2's 14Wh, although it does still weigh slightly less without the adjustable facial interface and y strap. Definitely needed that capacity bump though, and obviously it's still inadequate for MR. I'll be getting the BoboVR M3 Pro+ so I can keep using my existing hot swappable batteries. I learnt my lesson after using the stock strap on the Quest 2 for way too long, and then realising how much more I started using it once I'd upgraded.
I think they've done a great job and kept it at that budget price. Granted, if using it for pc vr, like me, you'll need a grunty pc - I think it's still really accessible. I will upgrade from 2 to 3. As for the strap, completely agree!! :) Nice review as always Stu, thank you.

Love using mine as pcvr wireless thanks to the built in airlink. I can even play steam vr games! It's amazing but I do need a bigger battery..I'm holding off to see what options there will be before I try the official elite strap with battery. It's just so pricey..and I heard stories about their past elite straps.. so I'm cautious
I wouldn't try and bank any of Meta's promises, but they have done a good job of significant updates on the Quest 2.
Airlink, 120hz, hand tracking (constant improvements), higher clock speeds (26% CPU and 19% GPU), double tap pass through, cloud backup, tablet/docked and desktop modes for the OS, multiple windows/multitasking, space sense with the cartoon outlines, desk and couch mode, swipe keyboard, bluetooth mouse and keyboard support, usb-c headphone support, guardian improvements, phone notifications, window resizing, oculus move fitness stats, Parental supervision tools, Oculus home improvements (being able to move around, the mirror, avatar improvements etc), custom remapping the touch controllers, putting back standard android features they'd removed (date/time adjust after one of their updates changed the date into the future and blocked everyone's internet access) etc, etc.
Im loving this headset, just tried the mixed reality mode for synth riders and elevens table tennis... so cool!
Okay, but surely it's a gimmick that will wear thin pretty quickly
its actually usefull, i was always scared to swing my arms too much in these games, not knowing my space limits , but now I can with confidence...sure the intial wow factor will wear off, but its utility wont@@barnabybot

I’ve attached my Bobovo (sp) quest 2 battery headset. Works fine but the tape looks a tad crap lol. What’s the fluffy shooting game again please? Great review thanks.
I did order the VR Prescription lenses as I did find having to wear glasses a little annoying after many hours of use.
the mix reality feels pretty magical, i can't imagine how crazy the apple vision looks in person with almost true to life MR
Agreed I think it's better to view the strap upgrade as more of a price cut on metas defence to welcome it into this price range, although I bet the battery is like 4 quid and strap is 9 quid of plastic,

I skipped the quest pro, so I can't say for sure, but what i will say is that the spec sheet is very similar - so unless theres something specific you want about the quest 3 (like the inevitable larger support from third part accessories), then you're probably fine sticking with the pro!
Thank you for the review! I purchased the Quest 3, but it still sits in an unopened bag underneath my computer desk. I've been hesitant to open it, perhaps fearing this isn't the time to jump into VR again. I bought the original heavy, black-colored Oculus device back many year ago. While satisfied in the overall VR experience, the lens resolution was disappointing. I am anxious to see what today's technology update has to offer today.

Just bought one and hoped that it would feel like a significant upgrade over my cv1, and unfortunately it really doesn't. It's quite a bit heavier, fov feels smaller, and while the sde is almost completely gone, I prefer the deeper blacks that the cv1 gets. And like you said, the strap is terrible and while that is acceptable for $300, I don't think it is for $500. I'll continue to play around with it and hopefully change my mind, but I may return it
how is the Elite strap with battery for the Quest 3? Meta claimed they made the strap stronger and more durable this time for the Quest 3, I just bought the Quest 3, but I am not going to set it up until I get the Elite strap with battery which I just ordered and will receive it in a couple of days, I would never use the default strap that the headset comes with, like what did with the Quest 2 also, I have been waiting all year for the Quest 3 to come out and finally it's here, it has great reviews everywhere online, looking forward to setting the headset up

I can't wait to get my Quest 3 next week but it does offer the best VR experience the PSVR2 does in my opinion with the haptics in the headset plus the adaptive triggers can't be matched backed with 10 teraflops of power bit I am getting my quest 3 for thr mixed reality games and apps
Try aspire 2 . Its a shooting game where people can break into your house and you can walk around your house to avoid lasers and other things.....had so much fun with it
I"m going to upset a few people but I have been using the Q3 now for 3 days. It has replaced my reverb G2.. other than the sweet spot on the G2 which does have a overall higher resolution. the total clarity along with all the other features , i do think it was a good upgrade. I will be trying the reverb again in a couple of weeks and be deciding if I should sell it. Tracking is very good and if you have good wifi comes very close to replacing the display cable.
Good video, and I love the mixed reality, but I disagree that in the current state that's its more immersive than how it handles vr.
This was a really great review! I hope Meta can fix the distortion of the pass through video behind the user’s hands. I find that distracting and unrealistic. Would also like an option to seal off the nose gap. It’s fine for mixed reality, but detracts from pure VR.

This is a great headset and tbh I don't mind this headstrap, it's far better then the old one but I will be going for the bobovr m1 strap as the halo one isn't comfortable on my head.
Is this better than my ancient psvr1 graphically? And more importantly if I’m sitting next to someone whilst playing a game or watching a film can they hear the sound as loud as I do? Bluetooth headset solve this thanks
Imagine a game like Tea for gods that will put you in a sci-fi world. And make you walk your whole apt, twisting and turning you around, tricking you brain as if you were walking through another world. With the sencors this can easily be done. The current version has you walking a small room. But with the sensors it opens to a much more natural experience
Just upgraded my Quest 2 to the 3. Big improvement even though it's not a fundamentally different experience even with the colour passthrough.
Disappointing that the 'included launch game' actually isnt released until December - lets hope all the early adopters remember to claim it when it eventually arrives.
And yes, the included strap is indeed Satan's Codpiece.... so today I ordered the battery elite strap too (as I had that on the Quest 2). Big bonus being it still fits in the standard Quest carry case.
Thats one thing i didn't mention actually. Although they did backwards compatible with the games, im annoyed that they made it so uncomfortable and yet not backwards compatible with my quest 2 elite strap 😂
@@StusReviewsUK Theres only so much they can do. Did you notice that the power and headphone jacks are now inside the strap clips themselves rather than outside. The Quest 2 strap could never have worked as it doesnt have those holes.

I can attest to this... get the strap. Also, the new strap does not come with a silicon face cushion cover... which I also find to be necessary to keep it hygienic.
True! Im waiting for the leather replacements from VR cover (which they havent announced... just hoping they do them like they did for the quest 2)!
Virtually(!) all reviews I have seen have been rave. The strap and microphone are most condemned. Mine is on its way but as a newbie to VR, and 65, I hope I can find some intellectually challenging applications. Any good ideas? Thanks and luck

The stock strap is actually not that bad. It is just that you have to properly adjust it to your face and the most important part is not overtight it

Coming from a quest 2 myself, the difference in comfort ist night and day!
You just have to make sure to NOT overtight the band that goes over your head, so that the horizontal band can rest lower at the back of your head and is kind of being secured by it. You then don't have to make the whole thing so tight that it crushes your face because the horizontal band is kept in place by your head itself and not because it's so tight.
For me there is no problem at all wearing that thing a whole battery-cycle. On the quest 2 it really was a pain to do so but not anymore. I'm still going to get a bobovr some day in the future for maximum comfort though.
As a Quest 2 owner I’m waiting for Quest 4. Like pretty much every other device that gets upgraded every 12-18months the small change for your average Joe isn’t worth the expense.

anyone else get a little more motion sick compared to the quest 2? Maybe I just need to get used to it but for whatever reason ive been feeling just *slightly* motion sick using the quest 3, when I havnt gotten sick on quest 2 unless im doing something intensive for years now.
the standard strap is pretty okay, i can live with it until i get my bobovr m3

I hate the oily slime that permeates the psvr2 because of the oled screens, to me it doesn’t balance the benefits of deeper balances
The quest three is no doubt an *upgrade* to the quest 2. But it is getting more incremental, as technology like this tends to do, just look at smart phones. I feel like even a quest 4 *might* not be worth an upgrade when we get there in like 2-3 years. I might eat my words.
I don't really agree with that - i think this is more revolutionary than evolutionary. Like i said, the recipe is the same... theres not much that can be done about that, but what theyve done is made mixed reality an achievable and affordable experience, and i think thats super important for the next stages of the technology.

The jump from quest 2 to quest 3 is way larger than quest 1 to quest 2. The upgrade to quest 2 two years ago even came with a few downsides for example the missing oled. Q2"s screen is still miles better as a whole though. But what quest 3 accomplished is phenomenal. The new lenses by itself would have been enough for me to upgrade but they improved on literally everything, from sound, over comfort and resolution to MR and the controllers. That the controllers are missing that ring now makes so many games play better because you don't always have to mess with them while reloading your weapon for example.
As an owner of a quest 1, quest 2 and now quest 3 it feels like they made a list from all the wishes the community had and put it all in a new and still kind of affordable device.
If it had an OLED Screen it really would have been perfect and I wouldn't see any reason to upgrade to the next generation in the future. Feels kind of like the time when android got to a point with the galaxy s7 where it began that it really became just a device you can use without kind of 'fighting' against it frome time to time.
I remember me being hyped over upgrading my smartphone after one year and studying what all the new leaks for devices are that I might purchase a year later. Then the galaxy note 8 came and I just used it 4 years until my screen broke. That might be the quest 3 for me.

The Q3 is super clear yes, but I wish they went with OLED screens, the whole image looks like you're looking through a fog.

Interesting the much better quality of your MR passthough. All 3 of us at work can't get close to visuals like that.

Obviously you get the various VR YT's who essentially have film studio lvl lighting, and all 3 of us don't get home until dark this time of year.
Going to shortly try again now I can see a bit of sunshine.
However, it was terribly grainy mess. Severe distortion, and watching others able to read msg's from phones or smart watches wasn't close to the experience any of us saw.

Also had a chance to try a few of the handful of upgraded games, my favourite so far being Revolt, which is a huge difference as well.
Gone from 'Meh' to pleased with the upgrade within the last hour :)

Yea Stu, love the Quest 3 the straps definitely got to go, its like someone taken a cheese wire to your ears , now rocking the htc vive audio strap that I had on the Quest 2 , not taken the chance this time after 3 Broken meta elite straps though, it dose look beefer . The only problem I now have is I have to upgrade my daughters headset as I stupidly gave her a shot of mine .Mixed realty is awesome .
3 broken straps????? Thats crazy! I've still got the one i ordered near the beginning of having the quest 2 and its in near perfect condition! Out of pure interest... did you come from Quest 1?
@@StusReviewsUK I have had all the Quest headsets and others , so I have seen and apricate how far they have come come in a relatively crazy short time , Was tossing between picking up the Sony Psvr2 but I think they have dropped the ball . very little advertising and the state of plays look disappointing when it comes to VR and most of the games are ports from the Quest not enough to double dip on the games for the fidelity and now quest 3 has the extra horsepower it seem I have made the right choice .
My theory is this about the broken strap… because we came from quest 1… you remember how that was spring loaded? Like you had adjustment but the tension was sprung so you could remove and put on the headset? I found myself subconsciously doing that with the quest 2 and elite trap, but because that doesn’t spring like the quest 1, I was putting stress on it. I’d put money on the fact that 80% of those with broken straps came from the quest 1…
I had to make a real conscious choice to not use it like the quest 1 😂
@@StusReviewsUK I know what your saying. the amount of broken straps reported on reddit would say different . I was fully aware of the straps defect first one lasted a year before it cracked the replacement arrived broken from meta it self in the box , third lasted 3 months meta had no problem replacing them .My theory is it is a Manufacturing Production Fault to costly to rectify cheaper to do replacements . Compare your two elite straps and you will see the new one is signifyingly thicker .
If connect to pc use airlink and get a WiFi 6E router.

Wi-Fi 6 works fine on my quest 2 and air link, it use to be terrible before the recent driver update.
Watch some 3d videos. One of my favorite experiences other than mixed reality.
people also have different heads so what's comfortable to you might not be comfortable to others, I know some people that are fine with the default strap of Quest 2.
I mean you could probably drive your car in passthrough but definitely not at night, nevertheless the achievement is nothing short of amazing
There are quite a few games with MR updates - the store is just terrible at surfacing them. Puzzling places, Cubism, and linelight are great puzzle games with really nice MR modes. Synth Riders, Smash Drums and Samba De Amigo rhythm games also with MR.

@@StusReviewsUK no filter but if you scroll down about 5 miles on the app there is a ‘mixed reality’ heading but it only had three games in it. So it isn’t picking all of them up, and it should be way at the top during the launch period. Crazy

ermmmm hate to say it but you've put the watch strap on wrong lol I had the ultra 2 with same band and it shouldn't look like that!
The PC app needs updating asap. This was a hurried release imo.
The xr2 gen 2 has a performance of up to 150 percent more than the quest 2. Its 2.5 times as strong in just the gpu. Its insane
Well, graphically it is 30% better than Meta Quest 2 as Meta says.
Movies, TV & UA-cam look crisp. No blur, lag or pixelated when you bring anything close up. Text a lot easier to read now too.
Games look a little bit better, audio is fastly improved & games flow a lot better without lag or 'side walls'.
It sits better on the face, but not by much. The colour passthrough is a nice touch though 👍
So, buy one right now?
Well, I'd honestly say 'no', unless you're a VR/tech fanboy like me & saved up over a year & pre-ordered like I did.
I'd wait until a few months into 2024 (or mid 2024), when it's had a few updates & 'come into its own' with exclusive titles etc because at the moment, you're just playing your MQ2 games & watching movies etc but with better visuals.
I do think all of the online advance reviews & influencer hype about it are basically making it sound better than it actually is. Don't get me wrong, I love it & glad I got it in advance, but if I hadn't, I'd feel a tiny bit cheated. 😎

I don't agree on the strap part. I think it's a lot better than that of the quest 2. Of course if money is not an issue, get an upgrade.

As someone who paid £499 for the 256GB Quest 2 back in May my blood is legit boiling watching this video.
I just think Meta has released this for the Xmas market, but with the wait times going into months for one most places that kinda defeats the object here.
Also i think they've released an unfinished product in a way. It's just an enhanced vanilla product that is redundant until it really comes into its own.
They've released it with no exclusives, no proper MQ2 game updates for it & to me I think releasing Asgard's Wrath II to showcase its gaming capability in December highlights my point that's it's released early due Xmas.
So I i think anyone thinking of buying one now should really wait as the dark colours etc & other issues with it won't be remedied until way into the end of the 1st quater of 2024.
I ordered a new strap before I got my Headset and now the only reason I am happy I did is for the Battery included in the new strap as I find the original strap fine, I don't even feel like I am wearing the thing, probably because I worked on many Industrial sites where a hard hat was required all day every day, I would love to hear the complaints from kids today if they had to wear a hard hat for more than an hour :).
You don't even feel the Hard hat after a few days wearing one, many still complained, mainly the younger people.
This is the problem with being spoilt as a child, everyone should; live on a farm for their first 12 years as then we would get over 90% less whinging from them when they grow up and live in our Suburban or City areas.
I am all for a two year stint in the Military once they leave school as then we not only make the Boys become Men, we also then have a supply of well trained Men should we have need in any Emergency, instead oif a bunch of Alphabet soup children unable to do anything of any use and just run about screaming if they break a fingernail.
Haha, incidentally i used to be an archaeologist working on construction sites, and had to wear a hard hat 8 hours a day 5 days a week in all weather conditions (and arguably in worse weather than the so called 'workmen' who would go and sit in a cabin the moment it gets a little wet, the poor dears)... I remember one year it got so cold my hair froze... and I still find the quest 3 strap more uncomfortable than that 😂
@@StusReviewsUK I was a Sub contractor or Contractor, this meant I couldn't sit on my ass if it rained or was bad weather as then the job wouldn't get done, I couldn't afford to not keep going to complete a job on time or have to pay the penalties.
Sure wage earners or people on Salaries are spoilt, but they also get crap pay to suit, I would get more than triple what a wage or salary employee would get and was why I preferred working for myself, try painting a roof in the middle of Summer in 45+C and then tell me about a little frost in the beard, boo hoo a little ice, just chuck another coat on or have a decent winter jacket, when it's getting closer to 50C you can't just chuck a better quality Coat or jacket, it's then how tough you are, I have seen children playing outside in below minus 20C and I was born in a place where we swam in water that was below 9C as that was the summer for us, cold is nothing, look at Wim Hoff he plays in the cold with no clothes on so yeah it's so tough to be in the cold.
Even Wim Hoff or people like you stay away from the heat as you would collapse after only 20 minutes out bush, I have seen many so called tough guys pack their bags after only an hour, we did it for three months at a time, give me the cold any time.
So, as of right now, there is no way to watch UA-cam while, for example, doing the dishes or something?

The Elte strap is too expensive.
It's a very good mainstream device for the price but think ill be returning myn having no steamvr to add additional trackers is a no go for me so will be getting bigscreen beyond. As far as the whole usb-c thing meta does not care about pcvr as all the money goes to valve if they did theid just include DisplayPort over usb-c connection that would cost them $2 extra. As far as OLED as demonstrated by psvr2 it has horrible mura effect to almost unusable levels and m-oled you are still dreaming for it to be included in a $500 device.

psvr 2 has oled lense amd are terrible (mira effect)
It makes sense that you would unplug the battery to do pcvr because the computer charges the headset
"Developers are dragging their heels..." really? There are 50 games releasing this year. How long should it take to release a game for a brand new device? Since three months is apparently way too long.
in context to what i was talking about - developers dragging their heels updating the resolution. Sounds you cut developers too much slack -- exactly the reason we get absolute trash for games these days.
