I don't see why the employees have to testify in court to convict the shoplifters. All that should be needed is the video of them taking items without paying for them and them being caught with the stolen items.
How do you get across that they did not pay for the items without a person saying that? You need an employee witness to state on the record that the items were not paid for. That's how court works.
The real answer is you don't HAVE to. I work in Asset Protection and most of the time we will receive a subpoena/request for records and they will state we can either send a Certificate of Records summarizing your qualifications and the evidence provided, and if one is not returned they may reach back out to request testimony regarding the evidence turned over. Otherwise there's no guarantee the files are authentic and/or accurate. On occasion for larger/unique cases they may call in the AP Leader or whoever made/ran the stop/Investigation on the subject, but it's not like cashiers are going to court every time someone pockets a steak lol

But it's a misdemeanor due to prop. whatever... fine might be less than the value of the goods stolen? ... no jail, good luck getting any restitution,... not worth calling the police.
People who claim "stealing from a big store is fine and we shouldn't stop it" clearly don't get that the store will eventually just close down, and then truly decent people in the area will be stuck in an even worse food desert. All crime either directly or indirectly hurts people, that's why they are considered crimes.

You spent too much time blaming the poor and the homeless or drug addicts for your problems
This is what happens when you don’t prosecute crime. The stores won’t stop them because they could get sued or someone gets hurt. The police can’t charge them if it’s not over a certain amount. Even if it is they will most likely be let out. It’s messed up.
Perfect strategy to bring more and more elements of a security state penopticon. Cloward and Piven strategy of chaos and demoralization. Modern communism in the USA.
The reality is we would need to pump more funding into the criminal justice system in order to process and prosecute all crimes. Are you willing to ask Congress to adjust their budget allocations or are you willing to pay additional taxes? We need to get the funding from somewhere. As it currently stands, many court cases are crazy backlogged and it can take weeks or months before a trial takes place. If I were wrongfully accused of a crime I did not commit and I couldn’t make bail and had to wait it out in county jail until the matter can be resolved by a judge, I would be absolutely miserable and terrified of dying in county jail. All because city resources were tied up prosecuting misdemeanor offenses. Is it right? No, absolutely not. Criminals should be punished. But it’s going to require a heck of a reform across the entire system in order to start prosecuting every enforceable crime. And bear in mind court cases usually take multiple days for arraignment, motions to delay a case, or if a lawyer has to reschedule due to conflicting schedules, plus jury selection, etc. This is all before it goes to trial. And in between that prosecution will be negotiating with defense for a plea bargain because settling this out of court saves the city (aka tax payers) money. Operating a trial costs money. And we would need to build more courtrooms just to have space to process these cases. And hire more prosecutors, cops, detectives, public defenders, county jail staff, etc in order to process all these extra people.
In our small town here in the Philippines only a month back, a thief was apprehended & beat up by the store clerks. No charges for any of those who mauled the perp. Now that's a good way to handle shoplifting!

going vigilante is also breaking the law in the po po eyes (Assault. Battery. Attempted Murder on a first degree.) and those get charged more intensively than being a shoplifter on a grand theft scale despite all factors being felonies. problem is in CA, any theft under a grand in total would just make the cops look the other direction and call it a day, then you people question why it then becomes a pain in the ass to buy a quick drink at local "convience" stations and pharmacies. Beefing up security isn't going to solve the shoplifting issue when some people can idk... find ways around it with the infamous walmart banana trick now that every store is moving towards self-checkout.

"Ultimately it's up to retailer to protect their goods and hire security if needed." If that statement is representative of how the police feel about theft in SF, you just learned everything you need to know.
The police are being passive aggressive. They’re angry about BLM, “defund the police”, people shooting them, and just generally being treated as pariahs and not supported, as well as Prop 47. Every encounter they have now requires then to document a ton of demographic data. Their attitude is that we made our bed; now we can lie in it.
The problem is that the consequences for shoplifting are too soft or null. As a teenager my major fear was going to jail for shoplifting. Paying restitution, going to court etc. We need more severe punishment for thiefs.

Unprofitable stores will close, and then the government will have less to tax.
They can't prosecute theft if nobody presses charges. It's like there was no theft and that's what the stores are doing. They aren't prosecuting because the employees would have to show up for court instead of working.
I worked as a front end cashier for Walgreens. I had people come in and simply help themselves to whatever they wanted whenever they felt like it. daily theft of feminine hygene products, razors, hair dye, whatever, I was told to simply ignore them, which I did until I was held up at gunpoint at closing and the manager refused to come out of the back room where he was counting the deposit. He stated it never happened because no cash was taken, however that was an impossibily because the cash drawer was in the back room. Managment ignored my request for a sit down meeting, the police were never called, the take was : It never happened: the guy was just hanging out because it was cold out, and "he was waiting for the bus", despite camera footage which clearly showed the incident: IT NEVER HAPPENED!! The next working day I called in Dead. The manager said :"You can't quit like this! Whose going to do all the work?" I said "I guess you are. Goodby now." All those security measures cost the stores a lot of money and the stores pass those costs on to its paying customers. If you value the businesses in your neighborhood's we may need to defend them ourselves
A few months back Walgreens CEO told shareholders that the amount they've lost is within the expected range and that they may have over exaggerated the problem. So, when they blame theft for closing stores or raising prices, they're lying.
My husband and I report all shoplifters we see while in store's. I don't care what people think, I'm not going to sit by and watch these people just walk out the door without paying and here we are struggling to buy food for our family
@@JamesBlue28ou’re incorrect. The Walgreens CEO was referring to the company as a whole, taking into account all of its nationwide locations. Encourage stores to go Members Only. However, the SFPD and DA likely don't enforce trespassing laws either. So, the only viable alternative left is for stores to offer online ordering with curbside pickup / delivery only.
A reminder that places like Japan can have literal staffless stores where people can go in, shop and then pay for things without actually stealing. Countries like Japan also have one of the lowest crime rates in the world. Think about that.
Japan's crime rate is low because their society values social harmony over all else. Regardless of what the legal system says, Japanese society assumes criminals are guilty until proven innocent. Prosecutors have been caught faking evidence to maintain the country's high conviction rate, which has resulted in at least 1 wrongful execution (likely many more). And because society values harmony over all else, police and prosecutors will "let things slide" to keep the peace. Japanese police would rather let men beat their wives and let the Yakuza run their racketeering schemes than risk public disorder and the shame that comes with it.

I managed a retail store for 12 years, and had several incidents. The best was during the holidays, long lines, and two woman with a boy around 12 years old had a cart full of stuff in line. Next thing j knew the boy had passed put in line and people were screaming " GET HELP!" So I went over to him, and he had his eyes shut , laying there, I asked the lady if she had called 911 yet, she said, and I quote , " I don't know who he is!" In my head I was like " WHAT!" I saw them all come in together, they were standing together, then I realized the lady with the shoping cart was gone! I started looking around, and she had snaked her way down an aisle and was heading towards the front door. So I said " Oh, ok , I'll call.911, just hold on! I went behind the counter and picked up the phone and dialed 911, and said " Hey, can you send the police to my store, there's a shop lifting in pogress!" Lol! That boy miraculously healed himself just like that! And the three of them took off out the door, WITHOUT the cart, thank you! 😂
That's an excellent reminder that whenever there's commotion in a public place, some sudden eruption of chaos, be sure to look ALL AROUND even as you might potentially want to offer assistance. Helping is great and all, but there's also the very real possibility that's it's a diversion to do something nefarious. We're all naturally curious (ok, nosy) and want to see what's going on, but the wise among us know it can be detrimental to get tunnel vision and fail to look all around for what might REALLY be going on...
Eventually it’ll be a store where you walk in and go to a kiosk and select what you want, and it get packed up in the secure back room by robots and brought to you after you pay. Shoplifters would have to break into the secure back room, but all you’d need is armed security.
We already have armed security, like police and security guards. They're not allowed to shoot anyone that's the problem in the first place. And if the thieves can't break into the store room they'll just start breaking into the trucks delivering the stuff to the stores.
As an employee we hate that everything is locked up as well. We have to stop get the items out and check out that items making it hard to do much else. It's a pain for us and for the customer. However, if we don't do that you'll never get what you are after anyway because the items will be forever stolen and out of stock.
Has anyone asked you to unlock something just so they could walk away with it anyway? I don't see the locking up being effective for any length of time, ultimately as a thief why not just ask for a dozen locked up items and put them all in a cart and then walk away with all of them at once anyway.
Oh yes in SF where restaurants cant give out plastic straws yet agencies can give out clean needles. What you see is brazen and they are not afraid of the law. Btw, wheres London Broil's tough talk. This is horrible.
Just have all items printed on a card board and place it on the shelves. Take the card board of the items to the check out. Wait for the store to hand you the items purchased.

This is my neighborhood Walgreens and half the times I have seen people shoplifting while I was there. There are homeless encampments spread out in that areas and what if they are arrested? They don’t get charged unless witnesses make a statement and willing to appear at the trial. The employees don’t want to do that. And the homeless don’t care if they spend a week in jail. Free food, shower and a bed. Up to $950 is not a felony so it’s not a deterrent.
After working LA/AP for 4yrs in the bay area in the late 80's early 90's, I'm surprised that there are retailers left...back then shoplifters were arrested and prosecuted to fullest extent of the law, now it's commonplace to just let them walk out with merchandise not paid for and nobody does anything...
And then you wonder why inflatrion exists. NOTHING is really worth ANYTHING anymore apart from the money it costs to PROTECT if from being stolen. Thats the kind of shit you are being sold and they are stealing. Security is included in the price which is so low that shoplifting isn't prosecuted anymore.
This is haeppning everywhere. In New York all stores have the glass cages around all products, and locks on the freezers. It slows down the shopping expereince greatly.
For the last 5 years or so, everything that I can buy for $11 on Amazon cost $22.50 at CVS or Walgreens. They are making the shoppers pay for their losses when all they needed to do was put everything behind a counter or under lock and key and grab it for the shopper or institute a member card like Costco to enter and leave, but these stores did nothing to stop the thieves. Trust me, if a cop in San Francisco saw you shoplifting like that in the video, you'd be under arrest. But cops don't patrol inside stores and the stores won't confront the shoplifters so now the customer pays way higher prices for the mishandling of these businesses both by the retailers and government.
You do realize this is a weird thing to have so much shop lifting? The stores don’t need these kind of policies in most locations in the USA and there is nowhere near as much shoplifting in those locations. It has more to do with what’s happening in SF and way less with Walgreens policies.
Tbh the amount of shoplifters is only increasing. Jails in cities like San Francisco are already full, that's why shoplifters are released quickly. The only way they can stop shoplifting is by hiring armed guards that are able to Taze/Pepper spray shoplifters when needed.
What this is going to lead to is that there will be no inventory in stores. Closest you'll get to a shopping experience is that you'll scan inventory cards with barcodes, then it'll be handled like a curbside delivery order. And then three-five years from now, people look around like "how did we get here?" and pretend we haven't seen it coming since 2020.
It won't be anything truly new. Back in the 1980s, we used to have a place called Service Merchandise. It was like a Sears or any other giant retailer, but it wasn't self serve. You had everything they sold on display, but to buy it you had to put in a order form and pay, and then a little while later, your stuff would come out of an upper floor warehouse down a conveyor belt. There was very little inventory "shrinkage" or opportunity for shoplifters.
@JimAllen-Persona As they should. As a consumer, I can't get too upset about these changes. Nobody can stay in business if their inventory keeps walking away unpaid. We can't even properly call what's going on in many cities as "shoplifting." It is outright looting.
Our society is wild. Destroying and disrespecting your own community is beyond me. If you’ve ever complained about why certain retail prices are high this is the reason. Legitimate consumers are making up for the company’s losses. A sickening cycle.
Back in the 80's I worked at Sears, and our loss prevention often chased thieves out into the parking lot, and drug them back into the loss prevention room. Called the cops, and charges were filed. Back then thieves were afraid of getting caught. They were sneaky about it... There were consequences.
I worked at the Clinique counter back then. If someone stole a tester bottle they were arrested. 2020 was about to sign another year lease then the riots started police car was burned in front of my building. I moved out a week later. Haven't gone into the city since.
May as well put up hidden cameras, move the last of the honest, working people out of there... then turn the entire city into an apocalyptic reality show.
The city of SF has so many problems it is absolutely crazy a city has this much problems. If the store don’t care to prosecute the shoplifters and protect their regular customers then you should think twice about shopping there as well.
These companies need to file multimillion dollar lawsuits against every politician or legal authority involved in letting this happen. And maybe the laws should be changed to make it easy to throw these politicians out of office before their term is up. You people voted for this. Its up to you to fix it.
Couldn't we avoid this whole issue if thevies were just arrested and charged? Then normal people wouldn't have to be subjected to all these security measures.
"Arrested and charged " some of this ppl dont even work , you must be out your mind , some get charged and don't pay a cent . What they need it's a a week in jail or community service. Don't do their community service another month in jail
When you have cities such as SF, LA, NYC, and Seattle where they have liberal leaders who protect the criminals instead of law abiding citizens and businesses, you are going to have lawlessness and public safety issues.
That's a great idea. Actually that's the end game of the total surveillance state and they have the technology to do it. Seems allowing crime to rise through inaction is working and is making ordinary well meaning citizens like you react in a manner that is against our own individual freedom and dignity.
Well… this is how Sams Club and Costco work…. You can’t get in without showing your membership card, and you can’t leave without scanning your receipt.

With everything enabling these shoplifters, including the retailers themselves, to do what they want, it's no surprise they have to resort to this. Still proves to be mostly ineffective. The customers are ultimately paying the price, both figuratively and literally, for the actions of these lowlifes.

Here in NYC, certain stores in Harlem and the Bronx were shut down due to rampant shoplifting. At a Walgreens in the Bronx, I've seen numerous people taking whatever they wanted, then walking right out! I just shook my head. That store is now closed. 😕🤬
Indeed. My local Walgreens (also in the Bronx) was in a location that has been continuously occupied by a retail business (first a supermarket, then Thrift-D, then Rite-Aid before it became a Walgreens) since before the 1970's. It closed in November 2022, and is still empty. Same reason as all the other closures (points to video).
It is clear the $950 shoplifting law needs to be undone. Can someone knowledgeable explain the process to undo it. Maybe Fox News or a local channel could explain how we screwed up and how to undo it.

An armed guard at the exit checking receipts would seemingly eliminate almost all shoplifting in any store. I really don't get why this isn't done everywhere.
Because I'm not going to be accosted by an armed serf. The first time I my life I saw armed guards at stores was in Northern Ireland. And I would live another almost 40 years before seeing armed guards in stores again. I'll put up with it when I'm in a strange country that is going through a war of sorts. At home it is completely unacceptable.
Dem's are afraid of the liability. Criminal tries to fight or flee and gets injured, they'll sue. This shapes corporate policy into a shoulder shrug when it comes to criminals. They'll simply just pass the buck onto you, the honest paying customer. Doesn't affect their bottom lines or their board members bank accounts.
I don't see why the employees have to testify in court to convict the shoplifters. All that should be needed is the video of them taking items without paying for them and them being caught with the stolen items.
Because a camera is not a witness. Only a person can be a witness. Though I agree with your point.
Cuz legal bs that’s why it wouldnt work
How do you get across that they did not pay for the items without a person saying that? You need an employee witness to state on the record that the items were not paid for. That's how court works.
Film of you is not you and you can say this is not me, it is easy, and after that with no witness there is no way to prove it is you in the film.

In my Walgreens, they use a pictured coupon of the item. You pull that off the shelf, and when you want to check out, you hand the clerk the coupons. They go to a locked cabinet & retrieve your items. It's a safeguard for the store, but it's a longer wait in line for the customer.

No drug users in Japan and people have more respect for each other. I am actually moving there soon anyway.
"Yellow is the new Black"...
And why, do you think, retailers won't confront shoplifters?

And most of that that you get for $11 on Amazon is stolen . That's way you see people stealing full shopping carts of laundry detergent .

Maybe if these individuals were prosecuted and not released so easily this wouldn't happen so often. Let the criminals do what they want

Since before 2020..many years ago..
It's all intentional so they can push a cashless world on us which is their goal to enslaving us. No cash, no freedom.
Yep, many retailers are already gearing up for this.
@JimAllen-Persona As they should. As a consumer, I can't get too upset about these changes. Nobody can stay in business if their inventory keeps walking away unpaid.

LOL the California politicians want this, they intentionally enable it, and that is why the libtard voter base elected them. This is entirely a self inflicted problem
Pelosi's peeps
This is what happens when 1 party has a monopoly on politics for 50+ years
@@rkraiem100 Who has had a monopoly on politics for 50 years?
This happens everywhere, not just in CA
I work a liquor store here in Modesto CA my boss gives me a lot of leeway when it comes to theft. More then once I've taken thieves to the ground then had them arrested for theft.....it sets a great precedence don't come here stealing or trying to rob the the store stealing gets you put on the floor and if you try to rob the store well you'll get to take the (room temperature challenge)
Make sure you cover your ASP.
@gregsteele806 I prefer blades if we're talking an EDC they don't jam and they never run out of bullets I always prefer to try to reason with a situation but will most gladly take action if necessary
@mattburns7380. I'm glad to see that Modesto still has some sanity. I grew up there from 1962-1970. I lived near Pike's Park and went to John C. Fremont Elementary.
@mitchmiller7204 I'm on the Westside Carpenter and Paradise and I live up the street on Carpenter, it's not to bad just have to watch what you say and do you know how it is
All stores should have this!!! I recently quit retail because I couldn't take it anymore. I worked at a high end department store and people would blatantly steal 1000's of dollars in clothes while staring at you because you couldn't do anything.
That's what happens in locations run by progressive Democrats. That's the agreement they made of not pursuing criminals who steal less than $950 worth of goods. Criminals are aware of this and are only too glad to participate.
Reminds me of being a teacher in today’s schools. Students stare at you as they do no work, play on their phones, and create disturbances. They know there’s nothing you can really do about it. At this point, there are no real consequences for anyone.
Sure, but that gate is open for far too long after the customer leaves. Thieves can easily wait for somebody to leave and simply follow them out!😊
@@nondescriptnyc Exactly and what is to stop them from already having a receipt they can scan. It's obviously not meant to be 100%, it's just an attempt to slow people down, maybe get a better view of their face. Just trying to find something that will help deter a few of thieves.
@@williamglenn777 I know right 👍
I have saw someone stealing from Walgreens and CVS, I asked cashier if they do anything .. they said no.. Yet I get pooped on and denied just using 2 coupons.. because staff don't understand them make me feel like a criminal .
These thieves are so disgusting. Should be put in jail.
CA is a god forsaken state
Liberals think they're stunning and brave.
Unfortunately it’s Prop 47 that makes these thieves untouchable
So progressive! 🤣
We used to have good laws and justice but that's a thing of the past.
Keep voting democrat
Your leaders are making tons of money off of the chaos
yeah...what the hell happened?
@@waynefoote3781 Someone brainwashed people into voting for a feable old President who can barely string a sentence together, woke policies created high inflation, opened up the border, wants puberty blockers for kids and signed a bill so men could dominate women's sports.
@@ocean12 - Yeah but the reason I keep voting Democrat is because the only other choice is those republicans. You know, the January 6th crowd?
@@thomask4836 hillary organized and planned jan 6 so Trump would be blamed. Capital police were also involved
Democrats are destroying America and the world
Just compare liberal cities to conservative cities
We would all be better off w no federal govt overlords
Each state can run itself
So, even if Obiden or Newsom runs for POTUS, you feel they are better than any republican? No matter how many wars they start, how high inflation goes, out of control crime, worsening poverty, threats from china and russia, gun confiscation, out of control school indoctrination, billions of illegals stealing tax payer money and using our precious resources. Human and drug trafficking is out of control. Military men from China are invading. Our constitutional and civil rights are being eroded. Our children are being taught to hate themselves, eachother, their parents and America. They graduate dumber than when they went to kindergarten, Parents are losing their rights to raise their own kids. Liberals want to sterilize and mutilate kids to control population. Since when did a president mandate medical procedures for people or be forced out of work. Liberals feel its fine to abort babies up until birth, and commit infanticide once they are born. So many great things being done by demoncrats. Soon America will be a socialist and then communist country. When there are more people on govt assistance than working, the system will collapse. Read up on the soviet union. Plus liberals want to stop oil. Well i hope everyone is prepared for modern society to collapse...no oil means no electricity, internet, transportation, supply chain, plastic, tires, road repairs or new roads, heat, AC, cell phones or computers. Things will go back to the old days. Travel will be by horse or you walk. People will grow and raise your own food or starve. Hope you live on some acreage. No more hospitals or medications. No grocery stores. No online shopping. Better learn how to raise sheep and make your own wool clothes. The list goes on.
You had one false reason against republicans. Pretty weak argument
An armed guard at the exit checking receipts would seemingly eliminate almost all shoplifting in any store. I really don't get why this isn't done everywhere.
Because it would eliminate many of the legit shoppers also. I wouldn't shop there.
Doesn't affect their bottom lines or their board members bank accounts.
because it is unconstitutional to search ones property w/o probable cause, and being inside a store is not probable cause.
@@invalidaccount2315 No. The constitution limits only what government can do. Criminal law limits what ordinary people can do.
you can blame the government because they made it legal.
